Although there are things that you can definitely save money on, there are certain fashion items that I feel women should definitely invest in.
1. Intimates/ lingerie: Not so much as underwear, but investing in a good bra is definitely worth it. I have purchased $15 bras in the past and the straps would get all tangled and even the wire would pop out!
eberjey Fairy Tales Bralet, $28.00 from Revolve Clothing
2. Shoes: I cannot stress this enough! Supporting your feet properly is so important and a good pair of sandals or heels will last longer. (This especially goes for boots and running shoes)
- Ramone, $66.75 from Zappos
3. Bags: I understand that not everyone can afford a Louis Vuitton, but getting a good handbag that you will use often is a great investment since it will stay in better shape for a longer period of time.
Taylor Handbag, $135.00 from Trina Turk
4. Jackets: Not every jacket you own has to be expensive, but higher-end leather jackets and winter coats will have better quality material, keeping you warmer and happier!
Jack by Lois Veggie Leather Jacket, $57.00 from Revolve Clothing
5. Jewelry: I’m not saying that it has to be Tiffany’s quality, but I’ve gotten jewelry from stores like Forever21 and they usually tend to break, bend, or rust.
What items do you like to splurge/save on?

lol don’t take this the wrong way, I agree on most of the things you named.
but i feel like you named everything. LOL.
what shouldn’t we spurge on?

I love that bra!

@prettykay04@xanga - I mean, she didn’t mention tops, pants, skirts, or dresses.
But I do agree, there are splurge worthy items in every fashion category.

I disagree on the jewelry, only because it’s good to have a lot of different earrings, necklaces, etc to really change the way an outfit looks. The more you have, the less you’re going to wear it, therefore rust and breakage wouldn’t be as much of a problem. That’s how it is for me anyway
HowEVER if it’s something really special that you want (like a pearl necklace or a diamond or something) then of course it’s worth splurging!

I totally agree…especially the jewelry. My skin’s sensitive so anything that’s not sterling silver, gold, or platinum…I’ll get an allergic reaction. Except if I find a cheap (but cute!) dangly pair of earrings, I’ll just switch out the hooks or bar with a sterling silver/gold one.

that’s not a real leather jacket..

I agree on getting high-quality items in these categories (and, personally, I love designer jeans, dresses, tops…oh just about everything lol), BUT you do not need to splurge on anything if you know where to look. For example, I LOVE Betsey Johnson jewelry, but always spend only $10-15 on earrings, $15-25 for bracelets and necklaces when I buy them from the Lord & Taylor clearance rack (I do have some Tiffany’s jewelry too….but that’s a different story lol). I’ve gotten a bunch of Free People tops and dresses there as well, costing $15-30, down from $70+ retail price; Betsey Johnson lingerie, on sale, is $15-20 there, too. Another great place is smartbargains.com — I got $40 Joe’s Jeans there, Betsey Johnson dresses for under $75, Rock & Republic pants for $40, and sooo much more. And I almost always buy my shoes online…sooo much cheaper than in-store. Finally, on Amazon.com, I spent $35 on a perfume that retails for $90 – awesome deal! So don’t give in to full price when you want a “splurge” item!!

that first bralet is terrible and you could probably only pay me to wear it, not vice versa

I think it is worth splurging on timeless items… such as the leather jacket you mention, or a pair of black leather boots, a pair of heels that will take you through weddings and dinner parties for years, a black dress that can be worn anywhere from a company holiday party to your grandma’s 98th birthday, that white silk blouse that you could wear every other day, a khaki trench coat, the black pencil skirt that you can wear to just about anywhere, a pair of small diamond studs, etc.
If it is something that you will be able to still wear seven years from now, it is worth it.

I think it’s always good to get good quality items and usually that means spending extra money.

i agree!

I love saving on cardigans! My goal is to never spend more than $20 on one cardigan.

Lol to this list.
I spend $6-10 on bras and they last me 4-5 years. I hand wash them. Then when the wire does pop out after a few years, I don’t feel like it’s a waste. Underwear = $2-3. Don’t handwash those, but normally they last at least a year.
I won’t spend over $25 on shoes, because all I wear are flats. For the 3-4 times a year I wear heels, I can deal with cheapos that will kill my feet for a few hours.
Most I’ve spent on a bag is $25. And that was even too much, but I bought it because it was big enough for my school books. Most of the other bags I have are gifts.
I spent $80 on my winter coat, and I hate it. I much prefer the $30 one I bought the year prior… but it’s not warm enough, so $80 one it is.
I don’t buy jewelry, I hate it. I don’t wear it ever, unless I actually have the extra time/effort to put into getting it out and putting it on when I get dressed. Most of the time, I’m wearing long sleeves or a sweatshirt that covers most of me. The only piece of jewelry I wear is the locket my boyfriend bought me for our first Christmas. I only take it off to shower. I would not invest in expensive jewelry to just have it sit in my jewelry box.
The only thing I will spend a lot on is Converse and sweatshirts. Converse are the most comfortable sneakers ever, and I never leave my house without a sweatshirt, because I get cold all the time. Oh, and socks. If I don’t get good quality socks I end up buying them every few months. I dunno why, but I just put holes in them constantly if they’re the cheap ones.

I think fashion essentials are worth splurging on. Like things you’ll probably wear and use multiple times in different ways forever. Things like a really good quality pair of black shoes, black dress, black bag, and studs that won’t rust or oxidize on you. You know, things that will last you for years and can never go wrong in wearing.

While I agree with investing in a good bra, that bra you posted looks pretty worthless- no padding, underwire, or supportive straps.
I find it’s not really worth it to splurge on a lot of things, because things can go out of style so quickly. I’d say a classic jacket/trench coat would be worth the extra money (though the one you posted is cheap), and some shoes. I’ve been able to find some really good quality shoes for $50 or less, though.
Bags go in and out of style so quickly, that I don’t think it’s worth it to splurge on them. I wear a bad for 2 or 3 months, then I’m on to the next one.

psh I bought my bag for $5 bucks at walmart, had it a year so far. cheap bags last just fine.

I don’t splurge. I splooge.

Agree for sure on the bra. I bought two very cheap bras mid-June and before mid-September the wire popped out on both. Also definitely agree with the shoes, especially when it comes to work related shoes or shoes you’ll be wearing really often. The rest of this stuff…eh if you can splurge on them then it’s probably better, but they aren’t super important things that you definitely need to splurge on to save money in the long run since styles come and go.

Socks. I love Smart Wool socks. (And some of the other brands that are similar are also nice..) I’m not picky about my other underwear, but I definitely prefer nicer socks… and shoes that are made well. I don’t care much about my other clothing, as long as it’s comfortable and fits well.

The only thing I agree on is a bra. And maybe /certain/ shoes. And maybe jeans if you don’t have a good collection, or it’s hard to find the perfect fitting jean. I, personally, don’t splurge on anything because I’m such a good bargain shopper (not to toot my own horn)… and things magically stay in [pretty/really] good condition for me.

No matter how much I agree that things like bras and boots should be top quality, I cannot bring myself to spend more than $30 on any one item of clothing. Seriously. It’s just PAINFUL to spend more than that on a piece of clothing to me! It works out okay so far.

Earrings – minimize skin irritation . Sneakers – if you work out/run on a regular basis. Backpacks – if you’re carrying a lot.

I splurge on Victoria’s secret panties. I get the free panty coupons in the mail, and I love those! They just seem to last longer and are more comfortable than the other ones I have tried. I also splurge on body lotion. I buy Bath and Body Works. I love the smells! Shoes I buy from payless or walmart. I won’t spend more than 20 dollars on a purse, and everything else I get is as cheap as I can find it. I like to hoard my money.

hell yeah! these 5 things are always worth it to splurge…and sometimes i think i do it too often.

My most recent splurge was a pair of hiking boots. $130 and my mom was freaking out even though it was my money. But I think they were a good investment since I see myself wearing them past the hiking class I am in. My sneakers are really taking a hit, and hopefully I can make them last longer by wearing my hiking boots when it rains or I’m going into the woods somewhere.

@mak3believ3@xanga - no its not, thats probably why it says VEGGIE leather jacket. im suspecting its vegan/eco friendly.

i will splurge on shoes. If its the right one. your feet are important and affect your back. plus i never did outgrow my pidgeon feet the whole way..
bras? def splurge on. for one, comfort. for two quality/lasting power, for three- guys. or girls if youre into them
jewelry, def splurge. lasts longer than clothes, and 130$ for a NICE necklace that lasts years to come? worth it.
I splurge on makeup. mmh sephora. if im putting bad chemicals into my skin that will affect my future children, im going to try to limit them( sephora has a pretty good organics selection), or at leats get good quality.

All the “high quality” items I’ve ever splurged on (Mac make up, designer denim, etc.) have not lasted noticeably longer than my cheaper stuff. Not even kidding.
The only things that have been worth it are:
My Burberry glasses frames: I’ve stepped on them, slept in them, lost them in my car, everything you can name, and they still hold up like a dream. I’ve had them almost 3 years now and refuse to buy new ones.
My Levi Jeans: $40 for a pair of jeans is a lot to me, but after trying them on, I knew they’d be worth it. And they are. They are my go to jeans every day of the week, I prefer them to the more expensive ones I’ve gotten in the mall before.
Winter Boots: This year I’m spending $140 on a pair of Sorel snow boots because I live in Ohio which has very bad weather during the winter months and I learned last year that cheap boots do not cut it.
Has anyone noticed that supposedly high quality items are often made cheaply and with cheap materials? I work at a dry cleaner and the Burberry, Ralph Lauren, etc. suits are made from the same exact materials as the Jos. A Bank suits or the ones you buy from Dillards/Macys.
I do not understand why people pay more for the same thing, different label.

Hey, I’m all for spending whatever you like on clothes and accessories. It’s your business.
Just don’t call it an investment. An investment is something that will go up in value (hopefully).
