Lady Gaga was a guest Sunday at a fundraiser hosted by President Barack Obama. The fundraiser was held at the home of Facebook’s Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg and David Goldberg in Atherton, Calif. Check out what the Queen of the Monsters had to say to the President after the jump.
Gaga asked a question during the Q&A session of the event. She thanked the president for his accomplishments , then read from a letter from a fan about the suicide of another fan , Jamey Rodemeyer, who had been subjected to bullying because he was gay.
She thanked Obama for hosting his anti-bullying conference with First Lady Michelle Obama, and then begged everyone in the room, including the president, to do what they can to prevent bullying. Obama thanked her, and spoke about his administration’s anti-bullying campaign.
I commend Gaga for bringing up the issue. Bullying is a serious problem in this country, and too many young people are committing suicide because of the hurtful words and actions of others. It’s very sad to hear and read about.
What do you think about the issue? What do you think can be done about bullying? [Via ABC]

kudos to gaga. jamey rodemeyer’s case turned my stomach. it’s unacceptable for LGBTQ kids (and adults) to be harassed, ridiculed, treated with cruelty and otherwise marginalised. it’s important that those within the public eye do all they can to increase awareness, and hopefully, decrease the frequency of bullying, especially of the LGBTQ community.

Bringing up the issue? It’s nice what she did as well as her intentions, but bullying is a “trendy” topic these days, not something that she’s randomly brought up.

I am absolutely disgusted by the kids that bullied Jamey Rodemeyer. I know he’s not the only gay teen to have committed suicide because of bullying, but I’m shocked by the things that these kids were saying AFTER Jamey had committed suicide. Saying things like “he’s better off dead” and even laughing about his suicide? I just can’t believe that in the year 2011, we’re still struggling to get everyone to accept and respect the LGBT community. We’ve come a long way, but we’re still pretty far behind from where we should be by now. It’s really sad.

Maybe Gaga should talk to her fans about their bullying habits.

There’s a difference between a bully and a peer. Kids bounce off each other, teaching each other lessons. Whenever I hear about Bob the fat bully bashing the geek, I’m like, whatever. They’re just peers learning lessons of social interaction. Bullies are different. They trap and torture their victims.
