As everyone knows, although you love your friends, living with them is an entirely different situation.
Most college students don’t have the luxury of living in privacy and I’ve personally encountered the good, bad, annoying, ugly, wtf moments, and more. Here are some common problems that I’m sure are frustrating to everyone.
1. Alarm Clocks
Chances are you and your roommate will not have the same class schedule. In my case, my roommate was in crew and had to wake up before 5am every morning for practice. As if that wasn’t bad enough, she was the type that could never wake up to her alarm, letting it ring as I annoyingly laid in bed wanting to break it.
2. Getting Sexiled
Everyone can get frisky from time to time but if it happens constantly, it can be one of the most frustrating situations especially when you really need something from your room but can’t! I’ve seen people purposely locked out of their room for hours and even others with roommates who got right down to it while they were still in the room!
3. Sharing is Caring…not.
As much as people say that sharing is caring, boundaries are definitely necessary when it comes to borrowing and using things with your roommates. I’ve had snacks and ingredients used up almost entirely before I even touched it and things mysteriously getting misused and disappearing. Not cool.
4. Cleaning Up
As a girl, I assumed others would be fairly organized and clean; I could not have been any more wrong. Past roommates of mine would leave dishes piling, alcohol bottles everywhere, food rotting in the fridge, the recycle bin overflowing, hair all over the bathroom, and the list goes on!
5. Being Loud
If your roommate is being obnoxiously loud before your 8am class or midterm you literally just want them to shut up or get out! It’s even worse when they’re not even doing anything productive but literally just doing stupid things like chasing each other or laughing at Youtube videos.
What annoying things have you all encountered? How did you deal with it?

I experienced 4 of these in the apartment I shared with 2 girls for 6 months last year. So annoying. I have never and probably will never be sexiled simply because of the kind of girls with whom I tend to live.

Lol. When I lived with my sister, her bf, and eventually their child, my one cat and their 4 cats I lived and breathed number 4. If I didn’t do the dishes they just piled up, if I didn’t clean the bathroom it became a war zone, if I didn’t take the trash out they would carefully balance garbage atop the heap. I was the maid, zookeeper and handy person for the entire two years I lived there. I live with my boyfriend now and it is much the same with some exceptions via nagging. Though we now have 4 of the 5 annoyances. The critters are the ones that get sexiled now.

I had the best roommate in the world. I only got to live with her for 2 years though. She got put into my apartment when she was a freshman and I was a junior. I was always up before her, and she could sleep through a tornado if given the opportunity, so the alarm clock wasn’t a problem. We went to a private Christian school, so getting “sexiled” didn’t happen… yes, there was one roommate who made a habit of sneaking a boy in, but then they broke up and it never happened again. And that only happened once in a great while. Usually she went to his room. I’m a stickler for rules so she tried not to involve me. We went shopping together so everything food wise was bought together. No problems there. We had a cleaning schedule and it worked out great and both of us were pretty tame so loud wasn’t a problem. Pretty much loved my roommate. If I ever wanted to move to PA, we’d get a place together.

This is why I refuse to live with a roommate…I think the only time I will live with others is obviously, my parents, my future spouse and maaaaybe a really really REALLY close friend who I knew I was completely compatible with. I’m not a big people person.

Before my parents moved here (asdfghjkl), I lived with my brother… so our problems were #1, #4 and #5. I used to go into his room and tell him to wake up because he was going to be late for school…. then one day he yelled at me to let him sleep, so I told him I would never wake him up again. He almost failed a class due to absences that semester and now that he works, I still refuse to wake him up even though I know he’s going to be late… he earned it.

Omg this is my life!! Except the second one, haha my room mates don’t have sex so that’s the only one I don’t have to deal with, but seriously it gets so annoying!!

The cleanliness thing was a big problem for me.

I think you and I should be roommates, but I don’t think we go to the same college sadly. I can safely say that none of these are me
although my alarm clock is super loud but I turn it off asap.

and btw, my ex housemate was all of these thing except #2…

4 and 5 (especially 5 because at least the 2 others made up for the messiness of the other by cleaning up after her) for my first set of roommates. I don’t think I had any of these issues with my second set of roommates. 3 was an issue when I lived in dorms in Egypt and had to keep my food in a communal fridge. I have two subway sandwiches and a McArabia stolen throughout that semester. Now I live in an apartment with my own room and one other person. I think everything is good but I might be guilty of 4…I was living by myself for 7 months before my roommate moved in and I’m still trying to adjust since I am a slob when it is just me.

In my dorm I have my own room so a lot of that doesn’t happen to me. I’m probably the one eating all the snacks though XD luckily we all do our fair share of cleaning. Definitely true though, my roommates are very very loud sometimes..

Mhmm thank god I have a single room now!! Having a roommate sucked complete balls! Although my dorm mates are still so loud.. & can’t park to save their lives!

being sexiled turned out well for me, the two hot girls down the hall always let me in.

Leaving hair all over the sink to the point of plugging the drain. Leaving various body hair in rings all over the tub and not bothering to rinse it down the drain. (I had a room mate that would once a month shave her “downstairs”, and I always knew whens she did it because she would leave the hair ALL OVER the tub.) Every time I showered, I would spray the whole tub with bleach.

I think this list nailed it! Even though my roommate is clean most of them time, there are still moments that she slips and makes a mess (like final weeks or projects is due). I am not too picky but I really hate the alarm situation! One other thing that is annoying is when they are in the bathroom for like more than 30 mins at a time in the morning when everyone else is trying to rush to get ready to go to school! I mean… all I am saying is living with people that are not your family is tough!
