After the repeal of the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy became official, soldier Steven Philips decided to tell his father he is gay over the phone and record it for YouTube.
ABC News followed up with the soldier, and that can be seen in the video below.
I think that Phillips is very brave for posting his private conversation on YouTube. How about you? [via ABC News]

I liked ‘don’t ask don’t tell.’ That way, people couldn’t use their sexuality for merit or in manipulative mannerisms. I think he’s attention seeking.

Very sweet video. I watched it at work yesterday and it was hard to hear what the dad was saying though :/

That was so beautiful I cried.

I’m almost cried when the dad was like “I still love me, you hear me?” I just wish more parents were like this. Just because he gay doesn’t change a thing. And I’m glad he can serve openly, without hiding his true self. That’s what America is about.
@Colorsofthenight@xanga - I don’t see how this is attention seeking whatsoever. He isn’t using his sexuality for merit. He’s just happy that he can openly serve without hiding a part of himself. No one should have to hide their true self. This was a sweet and heart felt video. It’s sad that not everyone would act like this guy’s father.

@EmilyIsGeekChic@xanga - I don’t come to work and say, “I fucked my boyfriend last night, I’m a straight arrow.” I don’t want to hear about these peoples’ sexuality. This conversation is none of my business.

@EmilyIsGeekChic@xanga - I completely agree! This was so inspiring and heart-felt, I just can’t believe someone would say it was attention-seeking.

I don’t get how this is the whole world’s business.

@Colorsofthenight@xanga - then don’t listen and move on- we can’t censor the world.

@Colorsofthenight@xanga - but really that is an extreme example- most people talk about their spouses in very casual ways. Now gays in the military will be able to say “My husband/wife just bought that car.” They can openly be married/involved with the same sex, this is progress.

this is so amazing. thank you for sharing this
i havn’t come out to my parents yet and this soldier just helped me find my inner strength to do so.
i think that is the purpose of why the video.
so others will think he can do it, so can i.

@lewk@xanga - I kind of felt the same too- like I was a voyeur of this very private conversation lol, but I think he wanted to share with everyone for a few possible reasons (maybe he covers this in the interview I don’t know I haven’t watched it),, but either to show others it’s not that scary to “come out” to your parents, to show others it’s not scary to “come out” as a soldier, and to garner support for as not scary as it is- it could get very scary depending on how friends/family react.

@lewk@xanga - Agreed. I haven’t watched it yet, as I can’t view video where I am, but this is a very personal convo. I’d actually be pretty upset if someone tried to have a serious convo with me via YouTube.

I’m not normally a cheese ball or get emotional but….. this was nice.
His dad was the best and this guy was pretty brave going live!!! My eyes watered a bit. I’m not homosexual so I can’t understand the joys of don’t ask don’t tell being repealed so no comment on that.

@Rae - Well the convo wasn’t via youtube, it’s just a video of him calling his dad on the phone. Makes it a little better than making a vlog about it directed at his dad or something IMO heh.

It keeps playing the dumb ad about cotton and nothing about the video
wah

He’s an airman, not a soldier.
But other than that…amazing video.

AWESOME! But I am saddened by all the HORRIBLE comments on it on Youtube! Ughh

wait. do they not say that his name is randy?

@shayne_xx@xanga - On his Youtube page he states his name as Steven R Phillips, I guess Randy is his middle name.

Am I the only one who thought of fictional character Burt Hummel when his dad said “I still love you. You hear me?”

@Ms_Lola_Mae@xanga - You’re talking about Glee, right? Cause I thought it too. :)

Aww <3

@Colorsofthenight@xanga - That isn’t the conversation. I read a story about a woman in the military who would be dropped off to work by her girlfriend but worried if she kissed her goodbye and someone saw, that she could be reported under DADT. You shouldn’t have pretend your boyfriend or girlfriend is “just one of your friends”.

@SasGal@xanga - Yes. I am totally talking about Glee!
