I know this Rugrats Theory is all over the internet, but I just heard it for the first time recently and I wanted to share it all with you because it was so shocking.
This theory says that there is more behind Nickelodeon’s Rugrats besides being a cute show for little kids to watch. In fact, some people are saying that the show has this whole psychological meaning behind it centering around Angelica having a psychotic break at the age of 3 after having too many traumatic accidents happen in her family at such a young age.
This is by far the most random and depressing guess at the reason behind the characters of a kid’s show. Here’s what the theory says:
- All of the rugrats are a figment of Angelica’s imagination. Now that’s not so horrible by itself, but then we learn why Angelica made them up.
- Chuckie died with his mother in childbirth. This is why his dad is always so worried about him in the show.
- Tommy was stillborn, making his dad have some kind of break and sit in the basement to make toys for the son he was supposed to have.
- The DeVilles had an abortion. Angelica never found out if the baby was supposed to be a boy or a girl so she decided to make it twins. Then, she gave them matching names and personas because there probably would have been only one child if there was no abortion.
- The reason behind these delusions have been blamed on Angelica’s nonexistent relationship with her mother and her manipulative one with her father. Thus, Angelica had no one to turn to when she needed help dealing with the babies’ deaths and resorted to making up the lives they should have lived.
The theory even extends to the “All Grown Up” show that stemmed off of the 90s favorite.
In All Grown Up, Angelica is a bipolar schizophrenic addicted to narcotics and heroin because they help her keep her delusions alive. At this point, we learn that Angelica’s biological mom died from a heroin overdose and Angelica’s disease because she’s a crack baby. Her real mom’s name was Cynthia, hence her doll’s name. The woman from “Rugrats” who was Angelica’s mother is really her gold-digging step-mom who Angelica idolized.
When “All Grown Up” was canceled, Angelica died of an overdose just like her mother.
Dil is the only baby who isn’t fictional. However, Angelica never accepted him as being real and accidentally hit him too hard while trying to make him go away once, resulting in brain damage. This is why he’s such an odd child in “All Grown Up.”
Suzie was actually Angelica’s friend. The theory says that she grew up to become a psychologist and joined the Nickelodeon team to invent the “Rugrats” TV show, finally explaining the origin of the theory.
I was a huge fan of “Rugrats” when I was a kid and I just don’t see why a writer for a kid’s show would think of this when writing such a playful show. Personally, I think someone was bored one day and somehow came up with this elaborate theory as part of their psych homework.
Do you believe the Rugrats Theory?

I think it’s a cartoon and people shouldn’t look into it so much..

For some reason, I always thought the show was kind of creepy. I didn’t like it, but my sister ruled the TV remote.

Haha, interesting. I never saw the grown up ones… did the mother actually die?!
This is way too much trauma for one child’s life.
guest
If you actually do your research, you’ll find out this is all just bullshit.

I’m sorry, this came from where?

What the…. ??
guest
…Yeah, I agree that someone was just bored and conjured this whole thing out of thin air. xD

this is really stupid. interesting, but come on…

dude, come on, this has been around for forever. Don’t feed the trolls.

Someone made up a psychological theory about Spongebob too. I think people have too much time on their hands.

They’re trying too hard.

I think that whoever thought this up was definately bored. The Rugrats is one of the greatest shows that Nickolodeon had to offer (I wasn’t really a big fan of nickolodeon cartoons but the Rugrats were my only and my favorite cartoon from that show.) Whoever believes this seriously is psycologically disturbed…LOL

OR some random bored person on the internet could’ve just come up with all of this to troll people into thinking this is real. dont believe everything you read lolol

i think i am just going to pretend i didn’t see this and tell myself that Rugrats is just about kids growing up…

This is ridiculous. The person that came up with this probably had their own mental delusions.

interesting (disturbing) theory. Most likely not true.

I just heard about this last night from one of my friends. I gotta say, it’s creepy.

Uh, what? Someone had a lot of time on their hands to make this up.

that’s all over tumblr, and it’s most likely fake. i wish people would stop buying into anything they read…
guest
Oh man… if you really want to assign creepy meanings to “Rugrats” then let’s start with that disturbingly detailed spurt of white fluid coming out of Baby Dil’s bottle
guest
I don’t believe this is true, but still, it is DEPRESSING. I LOVE Rugrats, that’s pretty much all I watched when I was in elementary and middle school, I even watch it NOW on Netflix, and I’m in college, lol. I’m just so sad even reading this, I love that show, I hate that someone contaminated it’s playful nature.
guest
I always thought the Rugrats were the dream avatars of Homer, Bart, Lisa and Marge
guest
WTF? I’ve never heard this. I loved this show when I was a kid, now it makes me want to go back and rewatch it. I really think someone just had too just time on their hands and came up with this.
guest
This is the first “theory” I’ve ever seen for the two shows that I enjoyed in my youth that leads one to a dark and chilling idea. It’s definitely disturbing, but true? I doubt it. It sounds more like an elaborate tale thought up by someone incredibly bored or quite warped themselves.
guest
I’ve seen this so many times before, this is old.
It’s probably not true either. =\
guest
I believe someone’s fucked in the head.

lol whoever wrote that theory is disturbed.

it’s just a children’s tv show. why would people have to think so deeply into this. sheesh!

why…

Oh yeah,..and I’m really Miss universe!! Come on……..!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I’ve heard the one about Rugrats, but not the one about All Grown Up!
Apparently there’s one for Ed, Edd, and Eddy too. Do an internet search for Ed, Edd, and Eddy explained. The creativity of some people to figure out a psychology behind all of this, haha- props!

OH MY GOD IT WAS A FUCKING CARTOON.
This is absolute insanity! Absolute disgusting morbid insanity.
Maybe, JUST maybe, it was a fictional cartoon showing different personality types so that different kids could connect with different characters and learn life lessons and overcome fears and all that good stuff.
guest
Eh. Somebody had way too much time and/or personal issues. :\
guest
That is some fucked-up shit.

what a waste of 5 minutes of my precious time….moving on.
what’s next the Pooh Bear theory? The Doug Theory? Ren and Stimpy Realizations? Aaah Real Monster Mental Psychosis?
…stop fucking with the 90s please.

there are a lot of conspiracy theories about a lot of kids shows. this is creepy, but I don’t think it’s true – don’t worry! hahaha
there was one about pokemon, too – that everything was in ash’s head and all the different pokemon were his fears or something… weird! I like reading up on stuff like this, even if its fake and creeps me out haha
guest
hahaha this is hilarious!

Theory or no theory– Rugrats still IS the best Nickelodeon show. People can think of the oddest and most negative things sometimes (thinking of the hidden secrets of Disney– old, violent books turning into innocent movies and the continuous hidden sex images found, which I don’t believe are true). Cartoons bring the best figments of imagination.. many famous people are inspired by such psychotic thoughts.. forming entertainment that many people really end up loving. No matter how many psychotic.. weird.. theories they may have out there.. I really don’t give a fuck. I love Rugrats.
guest
Oh good lord….does this crap never end? Can’t a kids program just be a kids program any more? The commercials on them are what *I* think should be destroyed and/or stopped. Those create little shopping monsters and probably more psychosis from being denied all those toys!!!!
guest
Somebody was very bored. Being an art student, sounds like something someone would come up when trying to BS a deeper meaning behind a kids show lol
guest
This just makes me cringe. Rugrats was my FAVORITE as a kid. I seriously doubt there was any story like this behind it.
I’d never heard about this before, but it was definitely an interesting theory. Thanks for sharing.
guest
god forbid that i should be able to have a childhood memory without someone fucking it up & making a theory about it. it’s a childhood show, thats supposed to be funny, not have all these hidden underground meaning. whoever made up this theory was on crack. fuck you all.
guest
wtf
guest
Makes sense….
guest
i find this interesting to read but honestly its bull. why would they make a rugrats movie and then also they meet the thornberrys hehe
guest
i actually heard that susie was also in her imagination. because she was like angelica but opposite. she’s black, has similar hair just a little different she dresses the same. something like that
but i think someone was just bored and made the whole thing up. because half the episodes angelica isn’t even in. plus what about tommys friends from daycare or the park. did that not happen? & kimmy?
guest
That’s awesome! It’s all bullshit, but I think it’s interesting that someone went into such detail with it.
guest
This is really interesting… wow. I guess I don’t understand the “All Grown Up” references, because I only saw it once or twice.
guest
@BimmerPhile@xanga - See, I thought so as well. Though I don’t necessarily believe this theory, it would make some sense. The show always did have a dark undertone to it, like circus music that was ever so slightly off before an evil clown kills someone.
guest
My brother told me about this a long time ago. It’s interesting, I suppose, but there’s not any real support for the theory.
guest
I think who ever wrote that was really bored. -__- I mean it fits but I highly doubt that’s what someone thought of when they were writing “Rugrats”
guest
I think the person who wrote this has a sick sense of humor.
guest
Theory? Based on what? This is more like a dark rework of the story. It’s interesting, but there is nothing from the show that comes to mind that would justify calling this a theory.
guest
WTF? Arlene Klasky said years ago that the show was based upon the inner lives she imagined her children were having before they were able to talk. Angelica was a bully because…well, she was a spoiled brat and bullying was just part of her asshole personality.
I don’t even know what to say about the theory explained in the post. That’s a big WTF casserole with a side order of ‘holy shit’!
guest
hahahaha
I don’t believe it…. but its interesting.
I kind of want to watch All Grown Up now. They were never on when I was a kid…
guest
Oh please. This was meant to be a JOKE, it’s on humor sites. The person who thought of the so called theory was seriously just fucking around. It wasn’t meant to be thought of seriously. Jesus.
guest
I think it’s crazy… I loved Rugrats as a kid! I refuse to believe this crap

Hey, who knows.
there are alot of stories toned down for kids. such as the storyt of SLeeping beauty, hansel and gretal, ect ect. ( http://www.altereddimensions.net/strange/SleepingBeauty.aspx )
and who knows if this theory is correct or not, it could have many variations of roots.
i dont know why people really call this disturbing, since alot of stories (the original roots of them) were beyong disturbing from the Toned downed-disney versions, the original ones meaning to frighten the children LIke the original brothers grimm story of The red riding hood, to teach children important lessons.
and nothing works best then fear and a good, ellaborate story.
but im not saying this show has a root or a purpose like that, maybe they made it for Angelica because they saw their problems and felt bad for them, who knows.
but i also doubt that all this could be for the rug rats, honestly, maybe someone (the author) was a psychologist and saw this type of story and made it into a cartoon because they were bored(like what this article says) or just for something to do and make it into a story for children to enjoy because they felt bad for Angelica….
But this is pretty damn twisted.
I myself like stories that deal with alot of pshycological backgrounds and teach good life lessons, or anything of that sort (particularly in Manga) but …. yeah. this show doesnt teach anything., Just episodes of children having misadventures together.
guest
definitely someone’s psych homework.

okay so my question is who the hell was so bored with their shitty life that they are trying to destroy my childhood?

peony / 1 posts
Before you say anything to my response, notice there are more things to disprove the theory then supporting it.
Well, it could be possible if you think of it a bit more. The babies were able to do anything, especially with their imagination; like Angelica, she created the babies and had fun in a world so cold with her imagination. Suzie may have teamed up with Nick to send a message to kids, like “If you think of it, it could come true.”
However, I too have my doubts about this theory. First of all, there are some creeps out there. It is highly possible that this theory (Key Word: Theory) is a total fake. Even though this theory is clever and well thought through, it’s just WAY TOO thought through. 1) There were multiple commercials on the show involving Cynthia, and the adults (Not the main adults) knew she was a toy. Cynthia is just a representation of a Barbie Doll, and Angelica just cut her hair (she’s only 3 right?). 2) Many parents are over protective, or a nervous wreck when it comes to kids. Chaz’s wife died in the show, and he has to raise Chuckie so that clears up Chaz’s part. 3) Stu was an inventor, that was his job if I remember correctly (can’t really clear up the stillborn part). Also, why is the person trying to twist every single character in the show, especially Angelica? In the show she was spoiled, and bratty; who ever made this must not like Angelica for that reason. And most likely who ever came up with this is a very demented person. Even if this was real it would of been in the News, or some other type of media. It would of been mentioned somewhere. ALSO, why is this just now being brought up? Most of the comments, and posts (even on multiple sites) are from last September. So this also proves that the theory is a bunch of bull. Not to mention, All Grown Up! was cancelled in the early 2000′s (2008 to be exact), and the theory states Angelica died in 1994. How was the show cancelled after Angelica’s death if the show was cancelled in 2008? It all doesn’t add up.
In conclusion, there are many creepy, and demented people out there; like the person who created this theory. The theory is way to clever, and thought out. Who ever made this was trying to twist every single character in the series (mainly Angelica) into a demented version of the characters.
Honestly I think this theory is a bunch of bull. Look at the facts. They just don’t add up. Who ever made this is clever, but really should of covered ALL of the facts with demented versions in order to make this seem more real. That is all, and I hope I revived your childhood
peony / 1 posts
Does it make sense? Yes. Do I believe it? Not at all. I don’t see how someone could read that much into a kids show that I watched when I was like, 2, so yeah.
peony / 1 posts
I made one up about “Winnie The Pooh”… I think it’s just something funny to say. People like to laugh, other people like to make people laugh. Rugrats was just a show that kids enjoyed and some didn’t. No schizophrenia or other mental disorder. I mean really, in this world today, people are going to try to find a devious meaning behind a child’s television show? How about we worry about what really goes on in life.
peony / 1 posts
MANNNN,
this is such BS, someone got bored and thought this up but actually its kind of entertaining until it gets to all grown up and you start talking about the heroin, its just too much. But yea, cute lil story but i love Rugrats growing up and i still love it soo this isnt going to mess it up for me.
peony / 1 posts
if the Rugrats theory were ‘true’ then how would one explain the trip to Paris? Angelica told the lady-whats her name-that she knew someone with a brat of his own. The lady then proceeds to go to ‘Ooey Gooey World’ with the kids, not including Angelica. If this theory is true then, did they go to ‘Ooey Gooey World’ with imaginary kids? No. It is obviously made up. Someone was just bored one day. AND Chuckie is the one who stops the wedding..how could you explain that? This is definitely one big stupid made up theory.
peony / 1 posts
who ever came up with the theory is very creative,,,match things well..could be true why not..people get inspired by real life events

This is about as bad as playing records backwards to get hidden meanings…The Cartoon Rug Rats is a beloved show watched by millions. It is not correct to assume what never happened by some psycho person who probably never sat down and watched it from the beginning to its final ending! How dare anyone defame a show that stood the test of time and still managed to make us smile?

The theory is pretty bad and it should be kept to whoever made this up! My kids grew up watching the rug rats and now they really feel bad about this, as do I. That really sucks. Don’t bring the kids down!

What about the whole movie where Chucky’s dad marries the asian lady and chucky gets a new sister? Was she supposedly made up too? Or was she real? 0.o I really liked this show when I was little. It’s kind of interesting because my friends and I would pretend to be each character and I was always Suzie. Its funny that I am majoring in psychology.
peony / 1 posts
its a cartoon i think you shouldnt put so much effort into this because its just a show
peony / 1 posts
I don’t believe this is contamination by any sort or even irrational by any means. This beautiful life has many ugly conspiracies that condition us to believe things with a lack perception. I have not done my research, but I could see how this could be true from a psychological standpoint. It is not disturbing or too much tragedy for one girls life. Has anyone ever taken a look at sociology?
peony / 2 posts
I think that is the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard. It sounds like someone threw it to together as a joke. there is no evidence to support even slightly ANY of the statements made about the show, making the entire theory 100% wild and just…painfully stupid honestly..
peony / 2 posts
@tyciol - exaaactly. it is based upon absolutely nothing.
basically, this theory is /possible/…I GUESS….but it is NOT probable and there is NO evidence support it.
just because something is possible doesn’t make it true, is what people need to realize. you need evidence.
this bullshit isn’t even worth calling a theory

I think that this is a whole pile of fake things that someone somehow got tied together. Personally I think anything is possible. It explains a lot of things …..like y is Angelica soo insane or why is she so very attatched to her dol,lt also explains Stew as a fail inventor ,Angelicas mom always so busy and always walking over her dad and how Chuckie’s mother died. But for all we know people could be right maybe its all full of $H1T and some ple just has too much time on their hands. So just like the question’ how many licks it takes to get to the center of a tootsie pop’–THE WORLD MAY NEVER KNOW–
peony / 1 posts
No I don’t! I looked this up because of a discussion in class and
have found no evidence suggesting that this is even remotely true other than a
few blogs promoting the truth of this theory and a poorly written website that doesn’t
have spellcheck. The Rugrats show is about a group of babies who are faced with daily,
fun and exciting adventures while they grow up. Rugrats All Grown Up is about them grown up! Duh! =]Hope you don’t believe this nonsense.

I am actually considering that this might be true. Yeah, I know not to believe everything you read-especially on th interweb-but it’s something to ponder. I personally have never really paid much attention to the series, but it does sort of make sense. Most of our supposed blessed children movies on Disney were mostly taken from the Grimm’s brother gruesome tales and changed into a pretty picture of happily ever afters. This might be the same case. After all, worse things happen in real life all the time. A young girl alone in the world and tramatized makes up imaginary kids after hearing a conversation about it. We’ve all snooped in on our parents. She makes them up and has some sort of escape. And we’ve all wondered why Angelica kept the doll in such terrible conditions. And she constantly took hits of acid to continue this fantasy when she got older b/c of her schizophrentic and bipolar-which made her an outcast. Suzie would have gone along with it at a younger age, then continued the charade because it was sad. But I have to admit my doubts. One is that the ages and times don’t make sense. If Angelica died at 13/14 in 1994, then how would that make sense? The show was cancled in the 2000′s. And also, just the thought of someone wanting to make money off a child’s depressing and short life is just sick. Nick wouldn’t do that, at least in my view. But since the supposed Suzie became a physcoligist, maybe she wanted to show how you can take on a world of your own and be happy. All in all, I would say that this story is fair, not realistic. This could have happened, but there is no true proof to say it. That’s why it’s called a theory, not a truth. But I think the true point here-even if this theory is a lie-is to love everyone around you. Angelica did this so she could have attention and actual love. And if someone was there for her, then she wouldn’t have died-if this is true. So don’t think that this is b.s because this could happen because you decide that the girl with the imaginary friends is a freak. That’s all I have to say.
peony / 1 posts
This all bs because why would someone just start this don;t you think if it was true it would have been said a long time ago way to ruin some people’s experience of the two shows and make up lies!
peony / 1 posts
No way. It’s about a bunch of little babies using there imagination to go on adventures and showing a babies point of view like that a flight of stairs is like as tall as a mountain to them. And every show has to have a bad person hence, angelica.
guest
This makes literally no sense. There are a LOT of episodes where it’s just Tommy. And there are a lot of adult conversations that go unnoticed by the children ABOUT the kids, etc. It’s just bullshit to make a pretty show sad.
guest
This is just a well known creepypast.. Ha ha! Nothing special lol

This also explains why kimi was there as well she was adoped from Japan as a replacement for chucky
