Normally we tend to define nerds by their socks with sandals and broken glasses crudely re-mended with tape. But Steve Urkel-style glasses have recently been gaining popularity among all ages especially young adults and teens. The glasses are usually not even prescribed and some even come without frames. Why the sudden urge to wear glasses? The look has become categorized as “hipster” and once again, fashion has done its magic, turning something that was so out into the thing that’s so in.
For guys, the glasses can be paired with hip-hop type clothing (much like the New Boyz and Chris Brown) or even a full on suit. As for girls, almost anything goes whether it be a themed party or just a preppy/vintage look for class. I’ve seen the look worn on an everyday basis, at parties, dance competitions, and during class. They’re practically everywhere now. Rappers like Chris Brown and Jay-Z have been found sporting the look. And yes, even our steamy Ryan Gosling has embraced the look.
What do you think? Are nerdy glasses actually cute or are they a fashion no-no?

OMG, they’re glasses. Who the fuck cares?

Why does it matter, really? Like Yo-yo’s it will all blow over eventually.

XD I love my nerd-glasses. I don’t care if they’re “hipster-esque,” they just make me happy.

i think they are so ugly i hate them!!! stupid hipsters

Don’t really care if others want to wear them. However, I won’t be. Not because they are now associated with hipsters (dislike hipster style)…but because I had glasses similar to them when I was younger and was totally made fun of. Rather not relive that.
guest
I think they look like shit, but I’m glad it’s a trend because the glasses I have look like shit too but at least it’s “cool” now.

ryan and that girl look cute!
@Starving_For_Perfection__x3@xanga - yes because everyone that wears them are hipsters and if you wear them your automatically hipster.

Chris Browns are mended with tape because he hit his mirror.

They’re like a statement piece. They draw attention to the wearer, which is what they are obviously seeking when they wear something like this. It’s the same fashion objective that huge jeweled rings and obscenely large gauges have had in the past: “LOOK AT ME!!”

Because nerds are the stars of the internet.

I generally don’t care for them because I feel like they’ve become just another trend that people want to partake in to look “indie” and “retro”, but they look good on the right people. I just think they’re a big distraction from someone’s face; it’s like they’re trying to hide themselves behind these huge lenses.

I just hate it when people wear glasses when there’s NOTHING wrong with their eyes. If you had to wear them get through the day, you wouldn’t see them as a fashion statement or an accessory.
guest
I wear glasses because I need them to see clearly lol
guest
Because we actually need them in order to see correctly, thanks.

Nerds are cool and always will be.
We will rule the world. Oh wait we already are.

I think that indie/hipsters first started wearing them because they were different at the time. Now the more mainstream population has picked up on the trend, completely overdoing it. It was cool at first, but now it is kind of annoying.
Personally, I wear glasses in order to actually see clearly.
guest
well, I’ve never actually seen any true nerds wearing those glasses… ever… so……..
guest
I hate the stupid hipster glasses. They make people look like complete idiots or that they’re trying too hard. I like plastic-rimmed glasses, but the ones that cover half your face are so ugly in my opinion.
guest
I just have normal glasses.
guest
I have them but it’s more of an I need them than a fashion statement. I get really bad migraines and eye twitches if I keep looking without them on when I glance at my phone (peering downward, not taking them off). So having big glasses helps prevent that for me and reminds me. I’m also too scared to venture into contacts. When people wear them that don’t really have eye problems it’s kind of ridiculous but other than that no I don’t see a problem with them.
Like all trends they come and go then make a reappearance. This is going out of topic but I really can’t wait to see what is considered “vintage,” and “hipster” in 2030.

it’s the 80s, man.
everyone wants to be back in the 80s…even if the ones who never witnessed it…like me…i think the big “nerd” glasses are the key to finding an 80s world.
that’s what i see when i look through my non-lensed frames…
guest
Who cares. Ryan gosling is hot as fuck. He could walk around in those glasses naked for me allllll day.

@aheartofglitter@xanga - i dont think the author of this post meant ‘ugh why are people wearing glasses at all?!’ i think they were just talking about the frame.
and about 8 or 9 years ago (wow… that’s a while ago for me…) when i first found out i needed glasses, i remember going for something that looked good on me, not going for what was “in style”. so everyone saying ‘i need to wear glasses’, you don’t NEED to wear the frames like that. unless you picked those frames way before they were ‘cool’, then kudos to you for being hip before hip was… hip. lol.
it is pretty annoying that the frame is all of a sudden the newest trend when a while back no one liked wearing glasses at all. i think it goes with the whole thing about if someone cool does it, it’s automatically cool. the most annoying way to wear those frames are just as is; meaning when people wear JUST the frames, with no lenses. wth is up with that??

I wear glasses so I can see clearly, and recently I bought into the fad and got myself a pair of prescription ‘nerd’ glasses. I don’t regret it, they are cute, but I also have a normal pair. Who cares, they are just glasses?
guest
d00d, fuck everyone who wears things that are “in style.”
you must just be like everyone else.bitches.
fuck trends.trends are for the weak.
we’re living in a world of “who can be the most different? – oh, i saw someone else wearing that…you must be a follower, not a leader. i guess that means i’m better than you.”

I wear both contacts and glasses–my contacts are worn during the day, and my glasses are worn during the night, before I go to bed. The only problem with contacts is that they can get stuck way up in your eye, and then you have to go through hell trying to get them back over your iris again. That’s what sucks.
guest
They look ridiculous on people now. Back then, during Urkle time, was another thing.
guest
Because people who aren’t nerds love to call themselves nerds…
guest
honestly, i have the nerdlike frames myself. i got my perscription lens put into them, so i alternate betwwen the nerd pair and my other pair.
but, i think that they’re so stylish because the new fashion trend is “nerdy”. we’re taking fashion from like, the 90s and bringing them back. its like back in 2008ish when they brought back 80s style. for about 2 years, people were wearing legwarmers again, and spandex, and all those fashion do’s and don’ts of the decade.

@CrazyLikeMyDaddy@xanga - So true!

Wish I knew..I think its very unflattering.

I don’t understand why people are using some people’s disabilities as a fashion statement…to me, it’s almost like using crutches even though you don’t need to just to “look good”. They’re not fashion, they’re necessary for some people to see. It really pisses me off.
guest
I think they’re cute, but when people who don’t need glasses wear them? Can you say, ‘trying too hard’?

“The glasses are usually not even prescribed and some even come without frames.”
Really!? How the hell do you buy glasses without frames? Just a pair of Morpheus-esque lenses that clip to your nose?

we are in the age of the Nerd. The geeks are on top of the social/economical hierarchy and are assimilating us just like the feminists have done when the glass ceiling started going up a bit

There is no point wearing these glasses. Glasses are worn to help your eyes see better, and not to show off in them. If they are sunglasses, there is a point to wear them because you’re keeping the sunshine away from your eyes. So don’t waste your money on these fake worthless glasses.
