If the excitement around the ’90s Are All That’ block Nick featured this summer is any indicator, 90s nostalgia is in. In the same way ‘I Love the 80s’ hearkens a love fest for the 90s and the 00s, a yearning for the shows of our childhood should lead to a desire to relive the viral videos of our early adolescence.
I saw my first viral video around 2003, which was before YouTube even existed. It was the profane kangaroo classic End of The World. A friend sent me the link while we were in computer class supposedly learning how to use Microsoft Paint. Overall, the time spent watching the video was more useful.
Some other common first viral videos include “Charlie Bit Me” and “The Badger Song.” What was your first viral video?
The End of the World
If only nuclear winter did mean a ton of snow days.
Charlie Bit Me
In the future Charlie grows up to join the police force, but still enjoys causing his brother pain. “Charlie tased me! Ouch Charlie!”
The Badger Song
For years the mere mention of badgers, mushrooms, or snakes could set off a group sing.

Charlie the unicorn goes to Candy Mountain!
“Yeeeah, it’ll be an adventuuuurrre! We’re going on an adventuuuurrre, Charlieeeee.”
“Shun the non-believer! Shuuuuuuuuunnnnnnn….”

I still have the end of the world video bookmarked haha. Though I wouldn’t really put the Charlie video in with “early days” videos. That’s kind of recent, same with the Dentist “Is this real life?” kid.

I think the first viral video I saw was “Muffins”, or “Let Me Borrow that Top”. My roomie introduced me to these crazy videos freshman year 2006.

Badger Song brings back so many memories of the early days of post-dialup internet.
Strong Bad “Techno” was another favorite. And Group X “Mario Twins.” And that “Hello my future girlfriend” kid… It feels weird to think of this stuff as old until I realize it’s from almost a decade ago and a lot of people don’t know wtf I’m talking about.

Charlie Bit My Finger, Charlie the Unicorn and Muffins are considered old-school now?! Now I feel super old. When I think “Early days of Internet browsing” I think ugly Geocities pages and All Your Base… haha.

Charlie Bit Me isn’t that old. Anything pre-youtube can go in the “early days of the internet” category. Like Yadda and All Your Bases Are Belong To Us and the mentioned Badger song. And Lions in Kenya. Aaaaand anything Homestar Runner haha.

@iones_island@xanga -

I think the first pre-You tube videos I was aware of were Rejected, Big Bunny, and Making Fiends. My friends and I used to quote them all the time.
