I’m 21 years old and I’ve never given much thought to using anti-aging products. I was a lifeguard for a couple of years and I’m sure that my German-Irish skin is still hating me for that. I had a pretty dark tan but that’s long since gone. I have very red, sensitive skin and I try not to use too many products because usually it just pisses my skin off. One of my gay male friends started using anti-aging products when he was 14, so I’m wondering if I should start using them now. I try to remember to apply SPF face moisturizer in the mornings, but I’m using a minimal SPF 15 and don’t re-apply throughout the day. I don’t usually wear makeup although I assume that makeup does help cover skin somewhat. I would like to use a higher SPF, but I feel it as being slick on my skin and I hate looking greasy/shiny.
I’m not the kind of girl who takes particularly good care of her appearance. I am a minimalist. Hair in a pony-tail, T-shirt, shorts, flip-flops, and I’m good to go. I know that any skincare plan that requires too many products will quickly be abandoned. That said, I need help figuring out what exactly I should be using.
After doing a bit of research, I’ve found that the average age for starting an anti-aging regimen is around 25. There’s a myriad of creams, lotions, peels, swabs, washes, and who knows what else for day and night. As a consumer, it’s daunting to look at all of the options available. I’ve been considering Avon’s products, as I’ve generally had good experiences with them. Finding a decently priced and effective product is my goal.
Ladies, what do you do for your skin? Do you use anti-aging products, and if so when did you start?

I got my first wrinkle when I was 23 between my eyes. I would like to use anti-aging now.

I think you should use anti-aging products before you get wrinkles and you probably should use them in addition to lots of sunscreen. You don’t have to get the strong ones though.

I actually wonder that sometimes. I’m only 22 so I feel I shouldn’t be worrying about it but living in Miami (you’re a florida girl too I see) makes me feel I’ll probably get wrinkles earlier than people who don’t live in such sunny areas.

I use tretinoin and sunscreen. Everyone should be using sunscreen. Also tretinoin is the only thing proven to fight wrinkles, it also fights acne. My skin and face look waaay better now than in my teenage years thanks to these products. I think you should start as early as possible! (even kids should use safe non-carcinogenic sunscreens)
@Colorsofthenight@xanga - I got my first eye wrinkles at 15!!

Good skin care+good health=anti aging. My goal isn’t to look 21 when I’m 50. My goal is to age gracefully. Anti aging products rarely contain the concentrations or varieties of their active ingredient that would make a terrible amount of difference. Instead I clean, tone, exfoliate, and moisturize my skin with fresh and wholesome ingredients. Also, keep the sun off my skin. Mostly by covering my skin and wearing a hat (or using a parasol). Sunscreen is a secondary defense.
guest
Hmmm, average age of 25? I better get started. I do keep my skin clean, toned, moisturized and use suncreen on a regular basis. I suppose I can add something “rejuventating” and an eye cream. Good skin care is never too early to start, but maybe the fancier creams might be necessary yet and often are pricier than regular skin care products.
@heart_leigh@xanga - I haven’t tried the other brands you mentioned but I love the Shiseido skincare products.

I feel you’re never too young to take care of your skin. I’ve followed a skincare regimen since I was 14, and I’m, ahem, [insert x amount of years]. I use Asian products such as Shiseido, Kanebo, SK-II, etc. as it works best for my complexion. Pricey, but well worth it. What also helps is to definitely stay out of the sun and to use sunscreen/sunblock religiously.
guest
I started when I was 17. I’m almost 20 now. Though no one in my family has wrinkles, and I get made fun of a lot for it, there’s nothing wrong with early prevention. Now if only I can get myself to remember to put sunscreen before going to school… =_=
guest
Sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen! I played tennis in high school and rarely wore sunscreen, and I totally regret it. Now, I wear it religiously (I use Josie Maran Argan Oil Daily Moisturizer with SPF 40+ since it doubles as a moisturizer and sunscreen). You’re never too young to start taking care of your skin. Honestly, the sooner the better.

I can’t wait to have gray hair and wrinkles so I can finally look as old as I feel. But somehow my age and how old I feel seems to widen every birthday, not lessen.
But I’m all for sunscreen if nothing else.
guest
If anything, I think it’s too old to start. I started using anti-aging creams when I was 16 and most people still think I’m in high school.
guest
I use Philosophy daily cleanser and Hope in a Jar face cream). Its light, has SPF and makes my skin feel amazing. Ive already noticed a difference.. and im oly a little older than you (23).
guest
I really think anti-aging products are complete BS. It’s just a farce so companies can make more money.
guest
nah, I use eye cream and Retinol to prevent wrinkles. We’ll see if it works in the future. I’m 19.
guest
We’re so afraid of looking older in this country. I wonder how much anti-aging ads are really photoshopped to make you think the products work.
guest
you could try, if you want.
in my opinion, wrinkles happen, and you don’t have to look like you’re 16 forever.
guest
I have been using anti ageing moisturisers and creams since I was 14, as advised by my mum. It’s no extra effort for me, so I may as well be using products that will (hopefully) benefit me in the future as well.
guest
oh noo i been using anti aging creams, just those subtle ones like olay since I was 20. I think 21 is fine

@Ashley Nicole Anders@facebook - I found a wide brimmed hat at Claire’s that’s actually pretty cute (and wasn’t that immature-looking given where I got it). I think you can find a good hat just about anywhere but if it doesn’t fit well, it’s not going to look nice.

I don’t believe they work. It’s a scam. Good genetics, sunscreen, lots of water and a healthy diet is all you need.
rose / 948 posts
I’m 21 but I’m told that I look 16-17 and it’s mainly because of my lifestyle & diet and how I choose to take care of my skin with regiments.
guest
The 20s is the time to take care of your skin so you don’t have to use anti-aging products. Aside from that, I don’t really believe they work. Take care of your face, keep out of sun and use sunscreen, moisturize.

@Ashley Nicole Anders@facebook - I found your comments really interesting so I thought I’d ask! I’m 20 and am actually starting to consider the thought of using anti-aging products, but am scared that it’d only end up making me look older. I’ve started noticing small, delicate lines on my lower lid (where it creases to my under eye region) and some other lines below that are caused by smiling. I also have under eye circles (which I’ve had for a while…but I have a strong feeling they aren’t genetic because my mom doesn’t have them). Do you think these lines and/or circles are because of dehydration? I try to drink water as much as I can, but can’t maintain an ultra healthy diet all the time. I’ve been considering a hydrating eye cream, but again am afraid that it’s only going to make it worse (I started putting a little more moisturizer under my eyes before bed but I think it’s only making my lines appear to be more deeper. =/ Any tips/pointers/advice as to what I should do?

I’m not convinced that anti-aging products make a difference. If they do, it would indeed be best to use them preventively, so twenty-one would be a good starting age.
guest
No, you’re not too old. Keep using it and you’ll be gorgeously young when you get old (:
guest
Well a lot of people say to start as early as possible with these anti-aging products. I say a lot of them on the market today really are kinda BS, but I do think there are a couple with quality ingredients — you just have to do your research. HOWEVER, for you who is a minimalist, I say these are your best bet:
1. Live healthy overall — diet, exercise, get enough sleep
2. SUNSCREEN. I read in Allure that 90% of all aging is due to sun damage. Even cellulite can be traced to sun damage! Find one with SPF 30 or higher and make sure to use enough. I feel ya though, it’s hard finding a good sunscreen that doesn’t make you look shiny (esp. if you have oily skin to begin with, like me)
3. Moisturize. Beauty guru Michelle Phan on Youtube said that this is one of her biggest concerns, because dehydration def. causes aging. Moisturize at night; what I do is I also pat on a drop of olive oil around both eyes at nighttime
You’re def. doing your skin a favor by not wearing makeup though

@ShimmerBodyCream@xanga - tretinoin? where can I find this? I must know more!
guest
@Cayllesth@xanga - It is the active ingredient in Retin A/Renova. It’s a form of vitamin A like retinol is, but it penetrates the skin more easily and is much more effective. Unfortunately it is prescription, but a very cheap prescription with insurance because there are many generics, and it is extremely easy to get your dr or dermatologist to prescribe it to you.

I have a dermatologist and told him I’ve been using anti-aging creams
(I’m 21). Both he and his assistant LAUGHED at me. I asked him if 21 was
a good age to start and they both said it’s way too early for me and
it’s a MYTH that starting early actually prevents wrinkles. He said it
actually does MORE DAMAGE to me because the creams are too intense for
young and delicate skin and was meant for older skin. He said the right
age to start is by 28-30. Just a FYI.

@MoonCity@xanga - THANK YOU!
A couple of other posters have even claimed that starting early screwed up their skin… hmmm

I think you’re a bit too young to use anti-wrinkle skin care. I think you should use hydrating skincare for your twenties. I think people should use anti-wrinkle cream when they’re thirties.

@juliamegan@xanga - No problem
I just thought I should share the facts from an expert in the field.

Prevent, prevent, prevent.
I’m way too young to be using anti-aging products in general, but I just prefer to have a healthy life style than use an expensive cream that says it’ll make the lines in my face go away. I don’t believe it.

I’m 38 and haven’t used an anti-aging skin product yet. I think it’s kinda silly to worry about it at your age. The best anti-wrinkle cream out there is sunscreen. I use it because I’ve already had skin cancer. Make sure the sunscreen is broad spectrum protecting against UVA and UVB rays.
I wash my face most days with whatever soap I have on hand. Sometimes I buy a face wash.

@thepsychoticraccoon@xanga - Being older ain’t so bad. It’s actually quite nice.

Of course is too young! Im 21 and I still have acne!!!

I’ll be 25 in a few more months, and so far I don’t use anti-aging stuff. I have noticed a few dark, baggy spots under my eyes recently though, so I may have to start soon.

As a person in skin care (Kiehl’s Since 1851) I wish I knew everything I know now when I was 18 or even 16…(now 22) the thing is, even if you feel as though anti-aging is too much, the basic skin care regimen is Cleanse. Tone. Moisturize. Every day and every night. Sunscreen sunscreen sunscreen!
I don’t care if you live in Washington state, Canada, Guam, or New York. It doesn’t matter if there are always clouds and rain. The SUN DOES NOT GO AWAY! It is always there and without sunscreen it causes 90% of skin aging!
Exfoliate, regularly but not necessarily every day.
Be SURE to buy something for your skin as recommended by someone who is in the business (getting facials are a good way to find out in depth and professional analysis of your skin type and what your regimen should look like — plus a nice pampering).
The worst thing you can do is get something too drying on your skin (it can make you oily and break out) or too heavy for your age (again, break outs and major clogged pores).. But yes I’m very glad you are taking the initiative to prevent major damage to the skin.. when you’re 40 and scouring skin care for a “miracle” your skin will thank you for starting now! There is no miracle, it’s consistent care!
[Longer than I intended and very rant-like but good luck and best wishes!]

@ShimmerBodyCream@xanga - you’re probably thinner than i am. I’m 5 feet tall and I’ve averaged around 125-130 since 15 or so, so I’m chubby. You look really thin. Fatter people have a layer on their faces that makes them look younger. Plus, I don’t normally express myself in a way that would cause that to come out.

@ShimmerBodyCream@xanga - I do have some white dots under my eyes (you can’t see them unless you get really, personally close) from sundamage. They look like tiny zits.

Maybe I’m paranoid or something but I’m 21 to.. and I noticed since I live in a very warm place its super sunny and since my skin dried out.. I got wrinkles where I smiled =( and now I put Dial Lotion on my face.. lol Ive never bought any anti-aging things except for wrinkle cream when I was 18 =( or something like for the eyes dunno but I dunno where that is anymore and I stopped using it but now whenever my skins dry I apply regular Lotion to my face.. so my skin will be soft so it won’t be rought and produce lines whenever I smile……
so I think if you notice that your skin is WAYYY too dry and you notice yourself getting wrinkles its okay to use anti-aging cream lol but don’t quote me on that maybe you should speak to a doctor
BUT don’t go too nuts about it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Don’t get all paranoid and stuff… lol Just take care of yourself and exercise =) i read if you exercise it helps you feel good and i think you don’t age as fast? dunno dont quote me on that either but ya
i guess look around and maybe theres some anti aging stuff for even twenty-somethings
guest
@syedanoor@xanga - Aww I’m sorry to hear that, but don’t worry! Your probably very beautiful =) and maybe just worrying but I’d say if you ever feel like your skin is rought do what I do. I already posted lol but put Lotion on your face or just buy something to smooth your face up. Also.. I read that staying out in the sun for too long can cause wrinkles.. I don’t know why.. I’d say eat more fruits and veggies and drink lots of water no matter what and exercise!!!!!! stay hydrated, smile more, have peace within yourself.. I think inner peace and kindness and living for God or whatever helps people stay young.. People who are happy inside look younger in my opinion =)
guest
@MoonCity@xanga - Actually thanks for noting that =( I actually tried on this Anti Wrinkle cream this lady at Lancom or the make up store gave me w/ my make up and it actually dried up my skin more so now I never use it.. I only used it once.. I think.. thats why I’m afraid to touch it so I do believe hwat your doctor is saying.. I wonder if its bad to use Dial Lotion on your face but it actually makes my skin feel SOFT lol but sometimes I wonder in my head if even that is dangerous but if I don’t use the Lotion on my face my skin is REALLY dry =( and I think dry skin produces wrinkles

I don’t use any anti-aging products, I’m 21, but after reading this I probably should start…
