Astronomers have a theory that a planet they just discovered might be made of diamond at the center. Talk about a cool planet! Now the big question is, how long do you think it will be before the jewelry industry tries to find a way to harvest it? Can you imagine how expensive a space diamond would be?
Let’s look at why scientists think this is a diamond planet. The planet is located 4,000 light years away from Earth, but is still located in our galaxy, the Milky Way. It is highly dense, moreso than any other known planet, and because of its density it is speculated that its largely made up of carbon in the crystalline form, aka, diamond. Matthew Bailes of Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne, describes it:
“The evolutionary history and amazing density of the planet all suggest it is comprised of carbon — i.e. a massive diamond orbiting a neutron star every two hours in an orbit so tight it would fit inside our own Sun.
And Ben Stappers of the University of Manchester adds, “In terms of what it would look like, I don’t know I could even speculate. I don’t imagine that a picture of a very shiny object is what we’re looking at here.” [via Yahoo News]
So, Lovelies, what do you think of this “diamond planet”? Could it be true?

Proof that God really IS a woman!

all I could think was “Doctor Who”

I feel like I’ve seen this thing when looking up in the sky. Haha…there’s something up there that’s abnormally brighter than everything else.
I think that’s freakin’ awesome though. How cool is that.

@could_itbe@xanga - The diamond would probably be more towards the center, and before its cut by a jeweler how sparkly is normal diamond? (I’d google but I’m lazy, lol). If you’re seeing something brighter than other stars it might be a planet. Stars also have varying levels of brightness on their own.

Humanity exploits not only it’s own natural resources but those throughout the universe as well! (And all for the sake of some sparkly-sparkly.) Were it oil America would seize the planet immediately thus beginning WWIII.
Proof this race is due to die out.
But that is a coolstorybro.

Who cares about the diamonds? If that’s what the planet looks like, I’d proceed to build a giant orbiting space station, grow copious amounts of ganja, and spend my days getting blazed and staring out the window while listening to some tunes.

@haigara@xanga - yes! Midnight!

Being 4,000 light years away, I don’t think any one will get their hands on it any time soon.

This is really great lovelyish esque advice for lovelyish esque topics.

I don’t care about it from the jewelry aspect, but I’m very intrigued to see what it looks like and how it exactly “functions”. Very interesting information!

@Ashley Nicole Anders@facebook - Haha! I was just trying to be a smart ass. Science + chicks = AWESOME!

I would like to see what it looks like!!!

That’s rad, but we’ve already dessicrated our planet. Let’s not screw over another.

@alwaysforeversunny@xanga - exactly
I was wondering if anyone would understand that ><

@TheScienceOfChic - But desecrating other planets is the New Frontier!

-headdesk- I hope this was in jest. you all realize that we will NEVER be able to travel that far right?
“it’s only 4k light years away!!”
“still in our own galaxy!!”
I hate how much money is spent looking for other planets for us to populate.

@Tarburz@xanga - No worries. That statement was a joke. I was being satirical about how money-hungry the world we live in is.
@Ashley Nicole Anders@facebook - Totally agree! I love science. When I was a kid I wanted to be an astronaut. lol
@TheScienceOfChic - Agreed. I was kidding about mining the planet.
@x_colormepretty_x@xanga - :)
@WHOAlizz@xanga - @SasGal@xanga - All nice theories! lol
@Ashley Nicole Anders@facebook - Read it. That is really neat!

yes, ask the lovelies. they clearly know more than astronomers.

very cool. i love these types of things.

Very interesting :]

would i be the richest person in the UNIVERSE if i somehow managed to own/rule this planet?

Too late, De Beers already has dibs. :/

I wonder who’s tried to claim it. That will be an extremely valuable planet later due to the various uses of diamonds–not just jewelry.
