I am not. I took Italian in middle and in high school, but I was never good at pronouncing the words correctly. Even though my pronunciation is off, I know enough words to understand what a person is saying.
So what about you guys? Are you bilingual/trilingual/polyglots? What languages do you speak?
guest
I speak three languages but I’m not fluent in any of them.
(english, spanish and french).
I know portuguese but I can’t speak it at all.

I can speak Spanish with some confidence. Working on my 6th year of study now. And I recently started German, but I am far from fluent in that regard.

Polyglot.

I am fluent in English and sarcasm.

Fluent in English, decent in conversational Taishanese, can understand conversational Cantonese (but it’s pretty obvious that either I didn’t really learn how to speak it or I have a thick Taishan accent), okay in conversational French and business-conversational Japanese.
I still kick myself for not pursuing more French in school, but having it forced upon me pushed me away. I excelled in it though. :\ I’d love to be fluent in all those + Mandarin someday.
guest
Sadly, I’m not fluent in any other languages…but I will continue practicing until I am! I’ve taken Spanish and Japanese, I just haven’t practiced enough to be fluent yet haha.
guest
Sadly, no
. I missed out on learning Slovak from my family when I was younger. I can get a very general sense of the topic at hand when I hear it, but that’s it lol. I’m currently learning German but it’s very basic right now. Hopefully I can gain fluency in that and ideally Czech and another language.
guest
fluent in english only.
I can lip sync to kpop songs

Yes! English, Malay & Chinese
I guess that’s what you get from growing up in Malaysia

guest
@glamthatsparkle@xanga - Is Malay very different from Chinese?
guest
No I’m not, but I will become fluent in German!
guest
I’m still working on French, but my written comprehension is really good. I’m just working on oral comprehension and my spoken French.
guest
I am fluent in English, know a decent amount of Spanish, a smattering of Italian, and a minute amount of both ASL and Mandarin. I’m going to eventually work on my fluency in at least Spanish and Italian.

Polyglot. It’s a hobby. I’m a native Spanish and English speaker, though.

Native English speaker, approaching fluency in Spanish, advanced French skills. I’ve also studied German and Latin, but neither of them stuck.

I’m fluent in English and Cantonese, can listen fairly well and speak intermediate Mandarin (which is sort of odd, considering I’ve never really grown up around anyone who spoke Mandarin to me), and can speak conversational French and Japanese. I’m pretty decent at writing all of these languages though.
I’m trying hard to push French into the intermediate and hopefully fluent range though…that’s gonna take some time.
guest
i speak thai and english and i am trying to learn japanese
its hard though!

English is my first language. I’m like ok with Spanish but I was always better at reading & writing it (which gives me a step up since most people only speak it) but I dont put that down on job forms because I dont know it well enough like I used to to carry on indepth conversations. And I know a handful of words & phrases in other languages but simple things.
guest
I’ve been enrolled in french classes since grade 4 because I live in Ontario, Canada. Pretty fluent, I’d say.
guest
I took French for six years in school, and I was quite fluent. However, when I didn’t speak it as much as I did in the past, I admit I’m not as fluent as before.
Oh, well. Ça ne fait rien. C’est la vie.

I’m fluent in English and Serbian. I can understand and know some German and Russian. I want to learn Greek and Italian though.
guest
I studied French for awhile, but never actually started to consider myself fluent until I made very close friends with a Swiss family. I spoke French a lot with them and was really devastated when they moved. I try to keep up with my French and practice speaking (or singing) in it, but I know I’m not as proficient as I used to be. I took Japanese lessons for awhile and would love to learn more.
guest

Used to be fluent in Italian, near fluent in French. I guess I’m a crappy native Spanish speaker and know a handful other phrases in stuff like German, Icelandic, Korean, Arabic etc but barely enough to count as basic

guest
@danaenicole@xanga - i’ve always been interested in sign language. but i have to ask, you say “american sign language” is there a difference in sign language depending on which country you’re from/in? because i’ve always thought that sign language is an international language that can be understood by all?
guest

I can speak english and I can understand french.

I’m not. But I wish I was. If I ever marrying someone who is fluent in another language because of his heritage, you bet I’m going to have him speak it to our kids and he is going to teach me so I can speak a little too. Or I’ll send them to spend time with their grandparents. I think coming from a family that speaks another language is the best way to be fluent in another language because you hear it as a young child. Plus I think it would be nice for my future offspring to have a connection to a culture.

English is my second language. Korean is the first. I took Spanish in high school and actually retained it in order to speak with my hispanic friends and SN I am very involved with their culture as I dance bachata, merengue, and salsa. I am currently taking French as my required language in college, and I will also take German in college because my boyfriend is German. <3

@jazbajunoon@xanga - sign language is different in every country except in cases where, for example, missionaries visited a certain people group where the deaf had no way to communicate and the missionaries taught them the sign language from their country. asl [american sign language] is the most common in the united states, obviously, but british sign language is also used especially in learning environments. bsl [british sign language] has the same syntax as spoken english and it uses small, insignificant words whereas asl leaves less important words out and has a different syntax than the spoken language.
this is probably more information than you wanted.. haha

@danaenicole@xanga - wow, i never knew there were variations of sign language too. i once saw a movie where “deaf culture” was one of the subjects in the movie. i didnt know sign language had such depth, it really is a culture. anyway, i had an aunt who’s mother in law relocated to the uk, she knew sign language & she wasn’t fluent in her English; she claimed sign language made things easier for her there. thanks for the info! really opened my eyes.

I know Afrikaans. My parents both speak it, it’s their first language, but for my brother and I it’s our second. We learnt it at school. Most people in South Africa are bilingual, as its compulsory at most schools to do two languages, for me it was English and Afrikaans.
guest
English and (Yemeni) Arabic. I’m a little iffy at understanding some types of arabic dialects (Moroccan, Algerian..), but ok with most
guest
I’m fluent in English and German. I’m proficient in Spanish.

Fluent in Punjabi, and will be studying Arabic in January. I HAVE to be fluent in Arabic to pursue my phD. I am fluent in Punjabi, but my vocabulary is not very good. I plan on studying more Punjabi and then transitioning into Hindi since it is extremely similar.
guest
I am fluent in english my first language is spanish.
guest
English, Spanish, French, Tagalog, Japanese, Arabic, Korean, and I’m working on German right now.
In my opinion having a large breadth of vocabulary is the hardest part about being fluent, grammar and structure are fairly logical to understand.
guest
YES! Tagalog!
I wish I was completely fluent in French.. but hey, I can trigger a conversation! LOL.

i am trying to be completely fluent in korean. i love the language…i think it sounds beautiful and looks very elegant when written. i WILL be fluent in it in a few years!!! i know enough to hold a simple conversation, but i do not know how to read or write yet.
i also would like to know thai, maybe not be completely fluent (read, write, speak) but i want to at least be able to speak and understand it.
other than that, i know a little spanish.
guest
Halfway fluent in French.

I think I’m a polyglot. Being conversational in a language counts right? If not, I’m trilingual.
guest
@QuantumStorm@xanga - Are you really? Damn it, I thought that the fact that you can draw well was going to be the end of your list of perfections. Gtfo. I’m starting to doubt your existence.
guest
@ivarahBharavi@xanga - I probably shouldn’t mention that I can divide by zero.
guest
@QuantumStorm@xanga - Alright, now you’re just bluffing.

@ivarahBharavi@xanga - Don’t be so sure. Ever heard of V404 Cygni? Yeah, that was all me.
