In a new study from the Journal of the American Dietetic Association, research showed that women who ate faster were much more likely to be obese than those who ate slower. Let me just say, I tend to stuff my face when I eat so maybe it is time to slow down.
The study took place in New Zealand, where they studied 1,600 women between the ages of 40 and 50. The women participated in a five-step eating speed scale where it was shown that the participants body mass index rose 2.8% or 4.3 pounds per speed or “step” increase.
I come from a family that loves to eat, and we tend to eat fast! I didn’t notice how fast I ate until I was around other people who eat slower, or at a normal speed. I wouldn’t say I’ve gained weight from my eating speed, but maybe if I ate slower it would help me to notice just how much I am actually eating.
What do you think of t his study? Do you eat fast or slow?

I don’t think much of this study. It’s more common sense. I think I eat at a moderate pace. Not particularly fast or slow. I chew my food pretty well before I swallow. Anyway, eating slowly for around 15-20 minutes helps your brain to register that you’re full.

this is a no brainer… but thanks for the reminder?

I’m a slow eater… I like to savor the taste and the joy of eating. When I’m eating with others, I always have to ask them why they inhale their food. >_>

I keep this in mind every time I eat.

I don’t think it is limited to women but both genders. gluttony leads to obesity, but eating speed probably factors into it. they see all the foods and want to sample all of it before the other people take it, so they eat faster to get a second helping and maybe more food like a competition to eat faster before the other greedy foodies eat everything, rather than to actually enjoy the meal in a casual way

yup. makes sense to me. thats why i was always told growing up to eat slow, chew like a bird. 30 second rule.

I eat moderately slow depending. I rarely finish a drink or even get to a second glass of it..sometimes I have but that is rarely.

I’m from New Zealand and eat slower than everyone I know and it doesn’t seem to make a difference. I’m pretty sure it’s about how much you eat rather than how fast… some people I know eat fast but won’t eat again after a meal while others eat slow and eat again multiple times. I know I usually eat again too.

I have been forced to eat slower because I’m on a medication that gives me the dry-mouth from hell. I mean it is BAD. So I have to drink water every few bites, which has forced me to slow down (that is a good thing).

I eat super fast, I work at a restaurant where I don’t get breaks and while I do get free food, if I choose to eat a meal, I have to make the tickets if any come in. So I’ve gotten into the habit of eating as fast as I can before any orders are punched in haha

Yeah, this is kind of a duh. If you eat fast, you will have eaten more food by the time you feel full than if you’d eaten slowly.

I eat fast, but I lose/am losing weight. But then again, I seem to lose weight by pigging out on ice cream… and cake.

I eat the slowest out of my family and friends. I take time to enjoy my food, drop my fork/spoon in between bites, and stop eating when I am full. I heard we are only supposed to eat until we are 70-80% full.

People have known this for a while. It takes time for your body to start producing the hormones to signal your body that you are full. If you are shoveling food in as fast as you can during that time period, you’ll eat more food than if you take your time. Once again, I feel that I am in the wrong kind of research. I need to change my topic so I can publish obvious=obvious results and use SPSS to attach some statistics to them.

Isn’t this article a bit obvious?

I can eat an entire meal in like 5 minutes. I’m so serious haha. When I try to eat slowly, I can only make it to ten minutes. When I say big meal, I mean like…a meal big enough to feed four people. I’m chubby, but that’s also because I consume 3000+ calories per day sometimes x.x

study: research often has obvious conclusions

I’ve heard this before. So many times. And no matter how much I try, I’m still a fast eater :-/
