Earlier today during my culinary arts class, we got to talking about Photoshop effects and how it changes photos for the better or for the worst. My friend Lysia was dusting color on the gum paste flowers and said, “I was looking at one of those fashion magazines today, and the women in there look so perfect. It disgusts me.”
I asked her why the magazine was bringing up such emotions, and she replied, “Hardly anybody is ever fine with just themselves in a photo; their skin is modified to fit a perfect, blemish free tone, and their makeup and eye colors are always enhanced.” Well, duh! I told her this wasn’t anything new, and that she shouldn’t let it bother her so much.
I can understand why it would, though, because it makes me wonder how much a photoshoot is dependent on the magic of Photoshop. Is it really necessary, though?
How do you feel about the ubiquity of Photoshop?

totally for it. it makes things more aesthetically appealing. so what if it’s not “real?” learn to decipher what’s real and get over it.

I took a few photo classes where we learned how to use it. I think that it’s a great tool, but should be used carefully. I don’t see anything wrong with cleaning up stray hairs, covering a pimple, and lessening dark circles under the eyes. Where it becomes a problem is when wrinkles are totally erased, waists are 3 inches smaller, and legs become drastically thinner.
Like most things, it should be done in moderation. If my picture was going to be in a magazine, I would like to look good, but I’d like to look like myself.

Who’s really all for photo shop? It creates a deceiving image for every one who sees it and for the person in it. It’s giving people a false image of beauty. People are trying to be as perfect as the models in magazines even though what they see isn’t real. And when it’s as simple as people photoshopping their profile pictures to make themselves look prettier is misleading to other people and to yourself.
I don’t think I’ve ever met someone who’s a fan of photoshop, although I know plenty of people who use it and I have been guilty of it just the same.
guest
i’m kind of against it. before i knew about photoshop and i’d see pictures of celebs and shit in magazines or online it’d make me feel like complete shit because of how perfect and unreal photoshop had made them look, and i’d strive to try and myself look like that – only to find out later on that it’s fake.
guest
I like the real person. I’m all for making someone look good.
Photoshop gets abused by creative people. It makes the subject look artificial.

As long as you’re not idiotic enough to believe that what you see is real, I don’t see a problem with it. Photo editing is mainly a tool used for advertising purposes and to make things look appealing to the eye. The only time Photoshop bugs me is when someone (namely on Facebook) airbrushes the shit out of their skin to the point where it doesn’t look soft or natural at all…but they do nothing with their eyes or lips at all and leave the texture and noise on there and it just looks worse than what their original image would have been. And when they “add” more makeup on their face. If you don’t know how to use Photoshop with moderation, don’t use it al all.
guest
For it. It makes everything nicer.
Besides, it’s not my fault if people are too dumb to realize what’s real and what’s not.

I love photography so I love photoshop.

@heartbreakwarfare@datingish - Exactly. I agree.

I’m an artist. I love drawing. In the process of recording someone onto paper, everything about them becomes beautiful to me. Whether it be jutting hipbones and spines or curves of fat, the flaws are what make them special and unique. It makes them human.
When I pick up a magazine, I want to see PEOPLE, not mannequins. What’s so wrong with embracing our humanity? :/
guest
true people should be shown in everyday magazines. photoshop should be left for models or creative photos. i definitely think there should be a fine line between the two. even though it sounds totally bogus, seeing unusually beautiful women in magazines brings me down!
guest
Meh, All I know is I like the non photo shopped picture of Madonna better than the other one. The other one just makes her unrecognizable and creepy.
guest
Against it.
guest
if they don’t use photoshop, then they’ll use other methods, such as putting on layers of makeup to draw on their face to look better
whether it be photoshop makeup or real makeup, it still gives a false image of what the person really looks like. subtle makeup is fine but I can tell if someone is intentionally using makeup tricks or photoshop, posing in certain angles or bright lighting to deceive others. celebrities selling products using photoshop is expected.
guest
I think it’s over used.
To me, the point of photography is to keep record of something during that time.
It seems pointless to photoshop the heck out of a picture. When they look back onto it, they’ll only be looking back onto an image of themselves that didn’t actually exist in time. It’s like creating a false memory.
I think it’s okay to use it in moderation, but to use it to the point where the person being photographed looks like someone else is very strange to me.
daisy / 599 posts
Basic photoshopping I think is a good thing, but overdoing it just looks ridic.
daisy / 599 posts
Also, no amount of photoshop is going to make a 55 year old woman look 25 again. That photo is proof.
guest
I’m for/ and against it. Over-shopping is silly, but looking at old saggy boobs makes me gag. There should be a cut point where they should stop. Like have people from the outside come in and tell them when the person starts looking like a cartoon drawing instead of human.

I am agenst it.

I’m for it, but there’s definitely a line that shouldn’t be crossed when it comes to making people look skinnier/erasing blemishing. After too much it just looks completely fake. Other than that, though, I love using Photoshop on my pictures. I like having them look different and have different lighting/colors/etc. I erase some of my blemishes too, but obviously I can’t overdo it or it looks weird. If I can’t be blemish-free in real life then I at least want to be blemish-free in my own photos! Let a girl dream!

I think it is way over used and creates false images of what aging does to you. It’s rather sad. I’m sure they photoshop guys and all… but all this photoshopping of women continues that belief that women have to be perfect and beautiful and that only young women are desirable. And that is rubbish.
guest
I think that first pic of Madonna is waaaay more interesting than the second one. I’d much rather look at her as she is than some boring, mannequin-like imitation of herself.
guest
I love that picture so much. Every time I see that specific picture, I can’t stop staring.
guest
Against it but some people clearly need it.

Half of my post was edited out -_- I love love love making graphics with photoshop. I don’t mind editing pictures with it (most of my pics are edited) because I have a slight obsession with the contrast setting

Love it as long as it brings out the best when it’s used for EBIL it needs to go on with it’s bad self.

I think Photoshop is totally fine if you want to do something like creating an interesting graphics/banners or something. But not so much on the photoshoping on people making them look sexier and prettier like you mentioned for the magazines. It just makes everything really un-natural. I think it also make the readers lower self-esteem, cause they’ll be like,”Why can’t I be as gorgeous as her?” and that when you have girls going on crazy diet, starving themselves to death and what so ever. Why photoshop the way people look? If God makes us look this way, then deal with it. Everyone gets old one day!
guest
@ashleya - I agree completely with you! The above picture is obviously overuse of the tool!

I love photoshop! It’s so fun!! I love it as long as it doesn’t change the structure of someone: their weight, length of nose, etc

Can you really be “for” or “against” a piece of software? Because that is what Photoshop is: it is merely a piece of software made by Adobe for photographers and graphic artists. I am not against it and actually messing around on Photoshop is one of my favorite hobbies so you could say I’m very much “for” it. It is more than just photo editing too; it can be used to create beautiful works of digital art. I look at it as just another medium like paint, colored pencil, or charcoal. The problem is that the fashion/makeup industry has abused the shit out of it and also that the general public can’t seem to tell the difference and continues to think that pictures in magazines are the same as real life. There is nothing wrong with Photoshop, but there is something wrong with our culture of perfection.
Also, there is nothing wrong with doing basic photo edits and tweaks. The problem is that there is this notion of stratification: there’s been too much over-editing, so there are two extremes of the completely un-touched photo or the photo that’s been edited so much that the person looks like a beautiful cyborg instead of a real person. WHERE IS THE MIDDLE GROUND, PEOPLE?
guest
@ashleya - i agree. erasing pimples is no big deal, but i’ve seen them change the size of eyes/noses/mouths and that’s completely ridiculous. i’m all for seeing real people in magazines.
guest
fake fake fake. should only be used to enhance beauty, not to create it
guest
i am for it. there’s nothing wrong with editing photos. however, i believe that editing a person’s appearance to the point where they are unrecognizable is just absurd.
sunflower / 290 posts
nothing wrong with enhancing the lighting or changing the color of an outfit.
but to take away all the wrinkles, thin people out, remove their every mark, that’s just wrong.
you can tell a little girl all you want that it’s not real, and she can totally understand that, but it’s not going to change the fact that she’s staring at perfection day ion and day out. the idea that that won’t ever seep in is ridiculous

@needmoreink@xanga - People have strong opinions for and against guns as well, even though guns are merely tools.

I like photoshop because it creates a more sureal look to photos/people. I think its a great graphic design tool for my artistic sketches too. Celebs have it done so that we dont see there flaws, it helps create the image of, “fame” “untouchableness” and so on. I kinda like that in a way? I dont wanna see a big butt pimple on Pam Andersons ass nor do I wanna see what Lady Gaga really looks like!! Im not saying I dont like “real” photos, but there’s a time and place for those, like an art gallery or health magazine(they still use sutle photoshop). I guess being an artist makes me enjoy using photoshop to change things appearances and so Im ok with others doing the same. As far as the madonna photo…well, Ive never thought she was hott, w or w out photoshop.
guest
@needmoreink@xanga - THANK YOU. I totally agree.
I love using Photoshop with a Wacom tablet and just messing around.
I also edit my photos because I don’t want to look at photos of myself in the future and see pimples. Basic photo editing is fine, there’s nothing wrong with cleaning things up a bit. My mom has had a problem with her teeth being stained from years of smoking, and she would love to see a picture of herself edited to whiten her teeth. I think she would actually smile for once in a picture if she could go in and fix it like that.
Yes, yes, we get it, everybody should adore their flaws and “embrace” them, but come on. There’s a time and a place for everything, and there’s always going to be edited pictures in magazines. People just need to start teaching their kids not to be stupid and believe those perfectly-smoothed over models actually look like that in person.
@SirNickDon@xanga - Yeah, tools that kill… As opposed to one that creates and edits images. o_0

I’m against it when it’s used on people to make them look ‘better’. I like the real picture of Madonna. She actually looks her age. She looks human.

I Think Photoshopping Is Wonderful!
Society Doesn’t Need, Want, Desire or Require O.F.F. Women!
(O.F.F. = Old Fat or Flat!)
guest
im against it just because of the effects it has on young girls especially teenagers and especially young girls who think skinny is the way to go. who think models in magazines “always look perfect” because they dont, they’re people too. dont believe everything you see and read in magazines even TV. nobodys “perfect”.
guest
gawd she looks horrible.
guest
I don’t care. I know what real people look like; it’s not hard to tell when something’s fake.
dahlia / 2103 posts
@SirNickDon@xanga - That is true, but I don’t think those are the same caliber threat level. Too much Photoshop doesn’t kill people.
dahlia / 2103 posts
@DickWilcox - Well I am all for duct-taping people’s mouths shut then because I think society would be much better off without O.M.C.P.’s….which would be Obnoxious Male Chauvanist Pricks. I’m sure you’ll look like a Calvin Klein model when you’re old though, right…

it’s whatever.

i like photography and so i tend to use photoshop a lot. a LITTLE adjustment to the overall photo is fine. but it’s too much if they airbrush everything so that you don’t even recognize the person in the picture anymore.
guest
for it. magazines are supposed to be glamorous and beautiful. if that means photoshop has to be used, then so be it. although, i do not like when they scrape away fat from women’s legs or belly area to make them look stick thin. that’s unrealistic. but enhancing eyes, skin, hair, etc is fine in my opinion.
guest
I love the first pic! She looks so badass! Second pic- meh. I guess it’s for the guys. The first one loosk edgy, like it shows how she really is inside and out. Love it.
guest
We as people, are not perfect. Why should we pretend our faces are as well? The beauty is in the flaws.
guest
i don’t use photoshop but i edit my pictures on iphoto, same principle, i change the original picture maybe by enhancing the colours, removing blemishes and dark circles, creating a certain mood to the picture. i don’t see anything wrong with it, as long as it is done in moderation and looks natural.
guest
people don’t “need” photoshop…. but you’re doing professional pictures… it’s gotta look like it came out of a studio! … yeah, everything in moderation. i mean, what are you gonna do, walk down the street and wear these magic photoshop goggles? lol you know, some people actually DO look that good irl — THAT’s what’s ridiculous!!! ;(
guest
It takes photography to a different level. I’m much more for editing photos when it’s for color enhancement or making a particular object “stand out”. I love the creativity that can take a plain ole pic and make it look spectacular. I might take a photo of myself and black and white everything out except my lips, or blades of grass, etc. I am not interested in “blemish” fixing and airbrushing to make a person look like perfection. But, I don’t mind that people do.
sunflower / 281 posts
for better or for WORSE* not worst.
And I like photoshop, but not when it’s as extreme as the photo included in this post, or when the person looks like a piece or paper, etc. I especially hate it when they shop eyelashes in mascara commercials ON TOP OF using false eyelashes. What a joke lol. Who are they trying to fool?
guest
i believe its something that does have a purpose, but i mean seriously… there is a limit on how much you should use it…. as you can CLEARLY see (above) i think people should be a little more honest on their looks, i get hiding the fine lines that lights and cameras show n things as such but i mean TOTAL airbushing it till you are a porcelin doll is just rediculous! *rolls eyes*
guest
Man, I am totally against it. Madonna is looking ok at her age, before the photoshop! People need to realize that you can’t be perfect like the other image, in reality. Especially at her age….. sheesh. People get old. People get wrinkles. People’s boobs sag. Yes, even Madonna’s…. Sad fact of life, kids.
guest
For all of you people who are saying ‘it’s your own fault if your so dumb as to think it’s real’
What about the millions of LITTLE KIDS who see and take in the magazine covers as they’re waiting in line with their parents at the grocery store? Children who catch glimpses of a billboard from the backseat of the car as you drive past? Are they DUMB for not realizing it’s fake? Do you think it would occur to them to even ask? Why would it?
See, this really has much more to do with what we saw/see as CHILDREN than it does with what adults get from it. A kid can only see so many of these fake images in certain contexts before they start internalizing it and subconsciously start seeing that as the ‘ideal’ body/face. And though you might not realize it , those early ideas affect people far into their adult years! You can’t just dismiss 10 years of subconscious influence just because you discover that all those images are fake!

I’m against it, I don’t see the need for it. Be proud of who you are, including the flaws!
guest
I think its fine in moderation….but don’t go overboard and make a huge change
guest
Holy shit that is some good photoshop skills.
guest
I’m fascinated by graphic design so naturally, I love Photoshop.I agree that people can get out of hand with it sometimes though.
guest
it’s interesting how so many people are for it because they think people should be smart enough and know how to decipher media images.
to me, it’s kind of sad that our society has gotten so superficial that we have to cover up things that are naturally human like wrinkles, and enhance sizes of body parts just to be more youthful and appealing.
i guess i don’t know whether it helps to know that it’s fake when we’re surrounded by images of enhanced people. it still creates this exaggerated standard of beauty imo
guest
I think it’s good for advertising. I can usually tell if someone has photoshopped a picture of themselves and I find it comical.

I’m really really sick of people winging on about how photo shop makes women insecure about their apearence. It makes me angry that people asume that all women are naive and shallow enough to base thier lives and self worth on a picture from a magazine. And why does this only affect women, no one goes on about how air brushed pictures of men might make them feel about themselves, to be honest I’m really insulted that a debate like this even exsists. I’m all for airbrushing it’s a useful tool for selling products and it makes my magazines purdy. food pictures such as adverts for supermarkets and fast food is staged and airbrushed to make the product as apealing as possible maybe the other big macs are feeling a bit self concious, all these people feeling sorry for the poor insecure women could waste their time helping them instead.
