Trust me, when I hit up Sephora with a friend to pick up my $40 tube of Amazing Concealer (Amazon), I can usually count on an eye roll or two. $40 for a tube of makeup? Are you mad?
But, I always hasten to argue that my beloved concealer is worth every penny, and here’s why:
1. It lasts for years. I buy one tube of this stuff about every 3-4 years. I can’t even imagine how many cheap Cover Girl concealers I would go through in that time. When you add up the money, it’d probably come out even.
2. It WORKS. I’ve tried cover-up from coast to coast, and this brand is the only one that really kicks my dark circles and acne marks to the curb. I use it under my eyes and anywhere else I need solid coverage.
3. I don’t wear a lot of makeup, but concealer is one of my staples. I use this literally everyday, so I figure it’s worth splurging for a pricey one, as opposed to a costly red lipstick that I’m only going to trot out on weekend nights.
What makeup do you splurge on, or, do you stick with budget stuff all-around?
guest
I’ll have to try that- I’ve never found a concealer I liked.
What do you use for foundation?
guest
I’d be a hypocrite if I said anything bad about that. I’ve learned that sometimes getting more expensive makeup is sometimes a must but other times its pointless to splurge when there are drugstore brands just as good. However concealer to me is a product that is worth the money. I use the same one as you and I agree it’s the only one that has ever worked for me too.

I totally agree with the whole uses to price ratio thing. I budget long term, so to me it makes sense to splurge on something if I will end up using it every day or to the point that each use costs less than a dollar.

The only makeup I’ve splurged on has been MUFE’s HD foundation. I love it.

oh my god, i want to try this concealer now.
the only things i “splurge” on are aveda products, because they don’t have ingredients that have been linked to cancer. (they follow european guidelines, which are much more strict then american) but those are probably around $20 for a tinted moisturizer or concealer, i think the powder is a bit cheaper. i’m thinking about going to sephora though and splurging on a bunch of stuff for a fancy wedding i’m going to next month.

I can totally understand the eye rolls when it comes to certain pricey makeup/face care items. But I am sold on certain “luxury” products. If it works and lasts quite some time, I would just ignore the eye rolls and continue using the products.

@vain_apathy@xanga - Aveda stuff is so great! Another brand that’s definitely worth the price tag.

…every 3-4 years….?
i don’t believe you.& is that clean?!

i have it, and i have to say i love this product! It’s a miracle what a TINY amount is able to cover up.

True except…makeup doesn’t have a 3-4 year shelf life (I do the same thing though).
Well I use a foundation (use it as a concealer) and it’s the same deal. From estee lauder so it’s more pricey…but it last a long time. And I can count on it not to cause me to break out.

eventually, I’ll get to the more expensive stuff, but I don’t use concealer

I love this concealer! I got it as a gift a while back and there is still a good amount in the tube. I don’t use it everyday, just when I have something or cover or didn’t get enough sleep. So that makes it last even longer.

totally agreed. sometimes the drug store brand works, sometimes you need the more expensive stuff. I have troublesome hair, so i’m forced to splurge at the hair salon. when regular products just won’t do it for you it’s totally worth it

I’ve been wanting to try this stuff for a while. It would be nice to stop using foundation and just switch to spot-correcting with concealer. Sometimes the more expensive stuff isn’t a rip-off, it actually works.

.5 oz lasting 3-4 years? I really don’t understand that. haha.

I’m definitely not gonna judge you on the fact that you buy $40 concealer because my Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer is around $40 too. Also, it’s you’re money and no one should give you crap about it because they’re not buying it. But I would like to point out that make updoes expire. I can see pushing a product for a few months over the life expectancy, but years? I feel like that’d be a little too much. But that’s just my opinion.

@HeLLo_Bianca@xanga - I use MUFE HD’s foundation too! lol..
I’ve been really happy with it. Sometimes I’ll add a drop of moisturizer and blend it for a really light/smooth coverage. (I find this works well if I don’t have primer)
I’ve also really liked Dior foundation in the past as well.

You know makeup expires right?

Re: the expiration issue
1) They say makeup expires, but I’ve never heard of anyone dying from continuing to use it
2) The expiration issue is more important for things like mascara that might get into the eyes.
3) For other kinds of makeup, you can tell if it’s really gone bad by the look, smell, and consistency. If someone stores it well, it can last longer than it says. Makeup companies have every incentive to encourage us to ditch makeup and buy more as soon as possible.
I totally understand paying that for concealer. I am pale with very dark undereye circles. Concealer is one of the most important parts of my makeup routine. I use MAC Pro Longwear Concealer. It’s not quite as expensive, but I also use a light-reflective eye brightener every day.

@screamobscenities@xanga - I have Laura Mercier foundation and I love it!

@KickDrumHeart@datingish - yeah, it’s amazing! the stuff is so high quality that you only need a tiny dab, maybe the size of the tip of your pinky, to do both your undereyes and any red spots.

I heard about this product, everyone says its amazing. I keep this in mind when my erase paste from benefit runs out (product gets 3.5/5)

when it comes to concealer i use hard candy heavy duty concealer.. it’s the only kind i’ve found to work for me, and it’s only $8. but i’ll definitey have to look into this concealer! if it works as well as you say, i think $40 is pretty worth it.
guest
@Jessica - My tinted moistuizer works so well, I love it. And it’s honestly worth every penny!
guest
Almay foundation is the BEST! It’s the only concealer I use and I have been using it for years. It covers every little blemish on my face. I only have to buy a new one every few months but it is totally worth it. Best of all, you can find it at basically any stores like Wal-Mart, Walgreens, Target, etc.
guest
but doesnt concealers expire by 1 year ???? just asking
guest
I wouldn’t say “makeup” because I spend about $42 on my Shiseido sunscreen/lotion. But that’s as far as I will ever go with make-up
guest
No.
guest
i splurge. i dont do drugstore…you can’t even test those.
guest
If it really lasts you that long, then you are doing things right. You are saving money and getting a superior product. You’re making an investment, a very wise investment.

I cant wear foundation because it makes me break out. I found some nice lighter stuff but it is too expensive and I don’t really wear make up save for special events.

I feel like makeup gets old and reformulates itself after a year or so, (there’s actually ‘makeup expiration dates’ on a lot of makeup that most people are unaware about).
anyway, i definitely am guilty of splurging on “department store” makeup, if it’s something I think Ill use a lot and has good quality. I love Tarte products especially.
