This new ad for Nivea, which in an effort to promote the company’s men’s skin care line seems to encourage men of color to “re-civilize” themselves and “look like [they] give a damn,” has outraged scores of bloggers and forced Nivea to issue a public apology.
Nivea responded by pulling the ads and issuing a statement to CNN:
We are deeply sorry to anyone who may take offense to this specific local advertisement. After realizing that this ad is misleading, it was immediately withdrawn.Diversity and equal opportunity are crucial values of NIVEA: The brand represents diversity, tolerance, and equal opportunity. We value difference. Direct or indirect discrimination must be ruled out in all decisions by, and in all areas of our activities. This applies regardless of gender, age, race, skin color, religion, ideology, sexual orientation, or disability. Nor should cultural, ethnic, or national origin, and political or philosophical conviction be of any significance.”
For what it’s worth, Nivea also ran a version of the ad featuring a Caucasian man:
As one online commenter says, “”In my opinion, if you look at both ads, you can clearly see that they are referring to cavemen…not afros.”
What do you think?

lol oh dear

I’m not seeing the racism here. Especially considering they did the same exact thing with a white dude.

The Caucasian one isn’t working. Really, though, I think it’s a big deal because it’s a black guy holding what looks to be a black guy with a 70′s fro and soul goatee head. If they released only the white guy one, I’m sure the reaction would be whatever. It’s a really touchy subject, and the ad does look like it’s sending the wrong message.
By “re-civilize yourself”, I understand that they mean cavemen, but the picture can definitely be interpreted otherwise.
That model is super good looking though x_x

If they use someone of color in their ad, they’re racist, because they’re implying that african-americans need to become civilized. If they only use white people in their ads they’re being racist, because they’re only portraying one race. It’s a lose-lose situation, people need to relax, and stop accusing every ad of being racist.

Haha, that is extremely offensive. Half the time I don’t know if companies do this on purpose or because they’re really dumb. Oreo barbie all over again.

Can people find something better or more worthwhile to complain about?

i agree with you. For someone to look at it and automatically assume it’s racist is racist in itself, because you don’t take it as uncivilized when you see the white man.

At first glance, it did seem like it, but then I realized this is a company that specializes in grooming. That mask portrays ungroomed men (long hair (and for obvious reasons, long hair on a black man typically turns into a ‘fro) and a beard).
Also, if you look at the ad closer, you’ll see that these products are for SHAVING.

Dare to conform.

They had an advert featuring a Caucasian guy too. This isn’t racist. People need to stop making something out of nothing.
@Ashley Nicole Anders@facebook - exactly!

@Ashley Nicole Anders@facebook - maybe every advert should feature a very racially diverse model who is a mix of every colour XD

@eomona@xanga - lol, but then if they released just the white guy one, they’d get crap about saying that only white men can be civilized!
people are so touchy…

While I don’t think the intent was to be racist I think a little bit more thought could have been put into it. The sad fact is a lot of people think black men are uncivilized and the media doesn’t help to cast a different light. Also I’d like to point out that making a new ad with a white person doesn’t make the the first one automatically not racist. The ad with the Caucasian model is telling you not to just go out however you want because it’s vegas. The first one is talking about being civilized, I mean come on you can’t tell me you can’t see it as not being racist unless you are just really oblivious to how a large majority of this country sees black men.

Because there is an ad with a white man as well, I don’t see it as that bad. If there was no second ad though I think it would fairly be seen as racism.

LOLOLOL at the stupid ad, and extra lulz for all the “Is this racist?” posts on Lovelyish XDDD

Unkempt hair and bushy beard isn’t considered as professional or clean as being clean-shaven with styled hair…. I don’t think this has anything at all to do with race, and people need to start playing a new card when they’re offended.

@Ashley Nicole Anders@facebook - if it was just a white man I suppose that would be racist too. Isn’t any singling out of a race above others racism?
I don’t know the way that Americans think (this campaign I haven’t seen here in Australia), and we don’t have to face race issues daily relating to said minorities.

hhaahha woww….wonder if Nivea is going to fire that marketing person.

@Ashley Nicole Anders@facebook - stick figures are all stick thin, encouraging our children to starve themselves! DUH.

I’m not sure how it’s racist. It portrays both men as formerly ratty and unkempt. Is it insulting to suggest that even minorities can look disgusting and dirty?
As far as I can see, this isn’t playing off of any stereotypes or even mentioning race in any way.
guest
The one with the black guy looks more like a decapitated head and is more disturbing than racist.
guest
Isn’t everything racist?
P.S. Those models are smokin’ hot.

I am glad Nivea has pulled the ad away and apologized publicly. I appreciate their mission statement and their business practices in celebrating people’s rich diversity.

People will always find something to bitch about. There are far more worthwhile things to ponder in life.
guest
@ask_ashleyyy@xanga - Like our economy, the political situation in Libya, child trafficking…I agree with you so much
guest
… that’s not racist… that’s what happens when a black man keeps growing his hair out, he gets an afro! just like how a caucasian man gets a scraggley beard and dirty hair… these people who are playing the race card are the real racists here!
sunflower / 290 posts
Seeing both makes it obvious it was a mistake, but the first one alone is like mega racist looking.
guest
I have to say that I’m genuinely getting tired of all these “isn’t this soooo racist” posts. Please find something more worthwhile and productive to blog about. Not everything is racist. Sometimes an advertisement is just an advertisement.
guest
Everything can be seen as racist if you try. Even adds that use diversity are often called out for using a “token [insert minority here] person”. Maybe the wording isn’t the best (they could have done something more like what the caucasian add did) but even that is nitpicking. I agree with the comment at the bottom of the article. People need to calm down.

big bushy hair and beards look bad on everyone, not just black men.

Hmmm!Again the black people hollering racist and not the white man !Why?Becasue the white man has no rights anymore,so why holler racist, making fun of a white man when no body will llisten….

Shut up and GET OVER YOURSELVES! Why does everything have to be PC in this country, and in the cases, LIKE THIS ONE, where there clearly isn’t anything politically incorrect, why make a big fuss about NOTHING??? It is so infuriating to me.
guest
No, its just that they don’t like afros. Lol.
guest
It’s just dumb. Advertisers have to try so hard to be edgy and funny now.
guest
If the black mask’s hair wasn’t so afro looking and more “cave-man looking” I think that would of helped.
