I bought this sheer leopard print top at Forever 21 this weekend, and it has CHANGED MY LIFE, guys. Uh, I might have worn it both Saturday and Sunday.
In trying to pair all of the clothing in my wardrobe with my new magical blouse, I realized that it might look cute worn with leggings. I also just got these black ankle boots, so I tried both of those together with a coral tank and my black yoga-pants-cum-leggings. What do you think? Here are my cheesy self-portraits:
The reason I’m thinking this could work is that the top is cropped in the front but longer in the back so it just about covers my booty. Have you ever tried to photograph your own ass in the mirror? AWKWARD. But here’s the back view:
And here it is with the blouse unbuttoned:
What do you think? Can I rock this, or should I stick with regular pants? LOOKING FORWARD TO HEARING FROM YOU.

You look good. May just be a prude, but I don’t like leggings as pants unless the shirt comes down over my ass.
guest
it’s cute for at home, but i would not rock that in public. always stick to pants, you never know what could happen.
guest
hey hey ! love the blouse, im in aus and forveer21 shipping is a bitch ! my opinion? you can do the leggings btu lose the orange singlet, it just draws attention to your middle, and you should be accentuating yourr toned legs and top half ! the leggings vs pants trick sucks because you would wanna wear a longer top to hide the lame top bit of the leggins, and it does nicely at the back because it scallops down but all i can say is not orange love !!!! take care xx
guest
If the shirt is longer and can cover your buttocks, then I think it’s great. But to treat it like a pants, don’t think it’s a great idea.

OMG it’s already cool enough in New York to wear leggings? I’m so jealous!
guest
Personally I am not a fan of leggings as pants, but if you choose to wear them the blouse should be longer in front as well to cover the front. I find coverage for the front as important as coverage for the buttocks.
guest
Wear pants. Trust me.

I say never treat leggings as pants.
Leggings only work if the top can cover your entire butt. I wouldn’t feel right wearing that particular outfit. If you had a longer tank, yeah it’d be fine. If the front of the shirt is going to be shorter than the back, for the love of God, be aware of any potential for cameltoe.

Leggings as pants are a no no. Put shorts on or pants. The shortest you can go with a shirt and wear leggings as pants is having the shirt just barely cover your ass
That’s just my opinion

Wear real pants.

Nobody can pull this look off. Wear a shirt that covers you butt. That’s the only way leggings-as-pants looks a little acceptable.
guest
leggings are not pants. at least wear a tunic.
guest
Meh…as far as leggings-as-pants go, it’s not bad, but if you want to go for a look like that, I’d say you’re better off wearing skinny jeans.
guest
Remember that post of a picture “Am I wearing pants”… yeah. It’s cute, but wear pants.
guest
My rule is as long as the leggings are thick enough. Those look thick enough. I think you can pull off the look, but it would look better if the tank top were a different color.
guest
You look nice. You could also wear black skinny jeans and avoid the risk of camel-toe :3
guest
I’m with the crowd. Its a cute idea, but no pants is a no go

supah cute, do it

Jessica — JEGGINGS. In black.

I think you could pull it off if the tank top you’re wearing under the sheer top is a little longer.

Leggings are not pants.

i think you should either wear black skinny jeans (virtually the same look, but without the awkwardness of leggings) or wear a black mini skirt over your leggings.

I really don’t see the issue with leggings as pants, as long as they’re totally opaque. Maybe just cause I live in SF and people do it all the time. In my opinion, leggings are a million times more comfortable than skinny jeans, and I have one pair of black skinny jeans that look literally the same as my black leggings. Go with comfort, who cares

You can buy black skinny jeans at Forever 21 for like $15, so i would go with actual jeans instead…
guest
You look adorable! However, I feel that the “never wear leggings as pants” rule is a rule that should never be broken.
guest
I would say no. I personally say no to any leggings to have a shirt that is shorter than your behind, does not hit your thighs (makes a person look dispoportionate (sp?)) And the orange tank doesn’t do the top any justice. I would put a red top underneath and maybe black jeggings/skinnies. Actually…the top might actually look cuter with wide legged pants.
guest
in all seriousnes, is there anything you can’t do, Jessica? i love this outfit and as long as you can’t see your underwear through your leggings, do it uppp, gurl.
guest
Leggings with pants are best when you have one of those “Is it a long shirt or a short dress?” situations.
For some reason I think adding a denim mini skirt would go great over the leggings and make it look less awkward.
guest
It looks pretty decent, but I think it would look better if you wore a slightly longer top under the leopard print — maybe even one with sleeves.
And this might just be the lighting, but I really can’t tell where the leggings end and the boots begin.
All in all, I think you can pull this look off.
guest
Leggings are not pants.
guest
As a rule and as a fact, leggings are not pants. Act accordingly.
guest
@Denise - eeeeh lately its been really rainy and in the 70s but it’ll get wamer sooner or later until late september.
Anyway, I like the blouse unbuttoned a lot better, and I dont think anyone looks good wearing pants as leggings unless the shirt is a tunic-type top.
hydrangea / 71 posts
I say yeah, because you should wear what you want to!
guest
Regular pants
guest
I think it’s cute. Not diggin those boots with the leggings, though.
guest
For God’s sake, no. Skinny jeans would look cuter.
guest
Your figure is great, but those leggings show just too many curves. Love the top combo though.
guest
I HATE when girls wear leggings as pants unless the shirt is long enough to cover everything.. Can we say CAMEL TOE?! Gross.
guest
hm…I wouldn’t wear that orange tank. Black or white. I don’t really care about the leggings as long as nothing strange is showing.

Go with pants. You look like you’re going to a yoga class or are having severe cramps. So unless you’re just wearing it around the house, I wouldn’t advise keeping the comfort look.
guest
I don’t think the leggings are a problem here; it’s the coral tank that throws off the look. It reminds me too much of the Flintstones…
That being said, I think this top would look awesome with a dark wash skinny jean. Then you can just wear a black bra under the sheer top (or a nude colored camisole for the day) and tuck the top into the jeans.
guest
Wow, so many nay-sayers .__.
I almost always wear it like this
Go for it (:
guest
Leggings should always always be worn as pants. This is a look that should never go out of style.

Like everyone else has said, leggings as pants are a no go
And I don’t particularly like the orange top with the leopard.
I like how the blouse looks with it unbuttoned.

Since when did leggings stop being pants? In the 80s, leggings were pants whether covered by a longer sweater or sweatshirt or not. If they aren’t see through, wear them as pants. Nobody will die. We used to even wear stirrup pants as pants, but then again they were pants that were leggings with stirrups.
guest
Not a huge fan of the shirt, even though I do like leopard print. I am also a huge staunch opposer of “leggings as pants.” Please just don’t do it
Leggings and a leopard tunic that covers your bum would be a nice chic alternative if you found something like that
guest
Real pants.
guest
I personally like it. It’s super cute and it’s not like they’re the super tight leggings that look like you have a wedgie.
guest
@TiredSoVeryTired@xanga - Haha thank you! My mom always thinks it’s weird that everyone gets yelled at for wearing leggings as pants. Every single outfit she has in my baby pictures is her in a sweatshirt/sweater and leggings.
guest
nooo, it didn’t cover the butt enough! black jeans have to do.
guest
Perfect!

i think you look cute . wear it !
guest
i really don’t understand the problem with wearing leggings as “pants”. I do it all the time, and the majority of people in Scotland do it too. it’s really not that big a deal, i say go for it!
guest
I always wear leggings as pants. and i think the outfit is adorable. your opinion is really the only one that matters.
guest
Yeah I don’t think leggings should be worn as pants…otherwise you have terrible camel toe and that’s gross. What about getting a slightly longer shirt? One that will cover up any possible camel toe. The lepord is cute!
sunflower / 437 posts
i notice from your new post that you just wore skinny jeans instead. thank the good lord.
although, nobody’s stopping you, just wish lassies would understand that if they wear things that show off their asses i am going to stare.
guest
I feel that leggings are just not pants, and never should be used as pants. You can get a pair of skinny jeans at forever 21 for like $15 bucks anyway….so there is no need to wear leggings as pants.
I go to University of Delaware, and you have no IDEA how many girls try wearing leggings as pants…and then spend the whole day unwittingly showing EVERYONE their vaginas. Those things are see through when stretched. Ick.
guest
Wear pants. I love the orange tank with the leopard print top!
guest
I’m not loving it as an outfit.
guest
fuck the nay-sayers! Those leggings are just fine. Just ditch the orange shirt.
guest
I think it works well if the top is going to cover your butt. Otherwise, NEVER wear them as pants.
guest
I don’t see why everyone is so opposed to leggings as pants..? I spent the majority of the last winter and spring wearing leggings as pants. Of course, they should never be tight enough to see camel toe and absolutely MUST be thick enough so as not to be see through. Otherwise, I think they are just as modest as skinny jeans, long butt-covering t-shirt or not. Plus, they are unbelievably more comfortable than skinny jeans.
I say wear the tights with a black cami instead of an orange one.
guest
You’re hot, and I can tell you probably look good naked (imagining it right now!) but those leggings constrict you in all the wrong places. No offense.
guest
It looks fine like that, but these are just pictures. When you move things could look different. Please stick to pants. IMO pants are classier.
orchid / 165 posts
no. leggings have to be thick and top has to be longer for you to be able to strut around like that.
guest
Leggings are not pants… When will people realize this.
guest
Buy black skinny jeans. I infinitely agree with the statement that leggings should never be worn as pants.

Rules are made to be broken! I’m really digging this look. You and my best friend have similar taste in clothes. Where are you boots from?
guest
@vlinder_farfalla@xanga -I agree with you. Technically, they are pants. People just like to complain about people’s “fashion” as if there are objective rules to it.
guest
The ass area is not what matters most when girls wear tights as pants. It’s the camel toe. Why does everyone fail to realise this?
