I was shocked when I came across Eat This, Not That‘s list of 30 healthy foods that, well, aren’t that healthy.
I own several of the Eat This, Not That books ($19.99 from Amazon) and also follow them on Twitter (@EatThisNotThat). I read through this whole list, found of Men’s Health, with a horrified, sick feeling. I’ve eaten or tried several of these foods while out at a restaurant, and, at the time, thought I was making the right choice! Apparently…I was wrong! The Pop Secret Kettle Corn, above, seemed like a decent choice compared to super buttery popcorn. Unfortunately, it’s loaded with trans fat.
2) Arizona Tea Herbal RX (300 calories, 73 grams sugar)
3) Jamba Juice Ideal Meal Chunky Strawberry (590 calories, 55 grams sugar)
4) Dunkin’ Donuts Pumpkin Muffin (650 calories)
5) Arby’s Market Fresh Roast Turkey and Swiss Sandwich (710 calories, 1, 680 mg sodium)
6) P.F Chang’s Chicken Noodle Soup (759 calories, 4,135 mg sodium)
7) Olive Garden Grilled Shrimp Caprese (990 calories, 3,490 mg sodium)
Blimpie Special Vegetarian Sandwich (1,186 calories, 3,532 mg sodium)

Are you shocked at the calorie/sugar/sodium content of any of these foods? Do you try to stay healthy when you go out to dinner?

This is not surprising at all.

Totally still going to eat the pumpkin muffin. Those things are delicious.

Packaged food and food from chain stores is rarely ever going to be healthy, because it’s bulk-made and marketed at the masses. This really shouldn’t be surprising at all.

I kept thinking “well duh!” when I saw the pictures. These are not surprising.
I was kinda surprised by how many calories the Arbys sandwich has, but since it comes from a fast food place I guess it’s not that shocking. PS- They’re really gross anyway.

I’m not shocked at some of these, a little for like the fruit one+_+” popcorn to me is never healthy, not even the organic popcorn I ate a while ago LOL so sad to see Arizona on the list ’cause I just drank 2;(

Jamba Juice and Olive Garden… mmmnmnmnmm.
I had a red velvet cupcake from Starbucks once. It was SO sweet, but once I got past the frosting, it was really good. Don’t want to know how bad it was for me, but it was a once in a lifetime thing (well, okay, I just eat at Starbucks seldom, but I’d probably get another cupcake), so I’m not worried.

Why are people shocked by these? I don’t get it.
If you want heathier popcorn, air pop it or pop it on the stove with a little bit of oil or butter (not that horrible stuff they sell as popcorn oil). Even the “Natural” microwave popcorn has trans-fat in it. They have these bowls you can buy to air pop popcorn in the microwave.
The herbal tea RX is healthy? in nature, even in the plant kingdom, bright colors = warning most of the time. When I see something in bright packaging, I assume it isn’t healthy (until I read the label) I like energy drinks, but I know they aren’t good for me.
The Jamba juice (and any other smoothies); those things are huge. even when you get one that does not use juice or syrup, it is still a lot of fruit grinded down to fill that large container. Add yogurt, soy milk, other extras. Obviously the calories add up. I had friends that used to order them as a drink with lunch until I told them how many calories they were adding to their meals.
Again, the pumpkin muffin is huge. I ate the whole thing when I was pregnant. Now, if I eat half, I am full.
I have never had the PF Chang’s soup, so I won’t comment on it. It looks good, it almost makes me not want to eat the noodle soup from my local Chinese restaurant b/c of the sodium. Almost, but a woman can indulge and now I need to go get some.
Cream sauce is never a better choice than red sauce. Tomatoes vs cream and butter. Add that to the huge portions at the Olive Garden and you get tons of calories, fat, sodium etc. Make it at home by stir frying the shrimp with garlic, basil, tomatoes and a small amount of olive oil and you have a good choice.
I skipped the Arby’s sandwich. The market fresh bread is thick. It also does not taste like “lite” or low cal bread. 1 slice is like the size of 2 slices of bread so it’s like you are eating a sandwich with 4 pieces of bread. The amount of meat on those sandwiches are also pretty crazy. Overall, I’d still pick this over anything else at Arby’s. If you want to reduce the calories, remove half the meat.
Blimpie…everything they make is just ick. It’s like they bathe it in salt or something. The majority of the calories come from the bread. There is enough bread on that sandwich to serve 4 people (they might not be full but they’d get a serving size of bread). Whatever that dressing is they put on the veggie sub is so salty that I ask them to leave it off. The olives and peppers are also a source of sodium. The nuclear orange cheeze; I am pretty sure is not helping with the calories or the sodium. I also think I see pickles on that sandwich as well.
Also this book relies mostly on the premise that the thing with less calories is better. Sometimes it is, sometimes it isn’t. For example a serving of the steal cut oatmeal that I make in the morning has more calories than Quaker’s or Weight Watcher’s weight control oatmeal, but the one I make is less processed, has more nutrients (that weren’t added after processing), than instant oatmeal. I’d pick mine any day over the packaged stuff. The Arby’s Original Roast beef sandwich is the better choice, but I also don’t like it, so I’d choose any of the Market Fresh sandwiches (and remove 1/2 the meat).

No not popcorn! Say it isn’t so. Well this is coming from a girl who ate an entire bag by herself.
Oops… never again.
I usually eat in a healthy way. Meaning I eat fruits and vegetables every day. Sometimes two apples a day. I do not eat that much protein or sodium. I rarely eat seconds as I am full already. I strive to eat until I am about 80% full which is what doctors recommend to people.

@Erika_Steele@xanga - It’s not so much a shock as it is denial to accept that yummy yum yum foods are unhealthy
Congrats, Gabrielle. You made me hungry.

Ew to all of that. None of that seems remotely healthy to me, lol.

Most of these are so unhealthy because of the processing and the stuff they add for flavoring, etc. It doesn’t really surprise me. I still eat most of it anyways
guest
A few of them surprised me.

@Erika_Steele@xanga - It’s great to see someone exercising common sense when it comes to packaged foods and foods from chain restaurants. And you’re right about the Eat This, Not That book, it seems like the amount of calories is the general main focus. It shouldn’t be the only factor to consider when choosing a dish.
Most of the items on the list I am not at all surprised about, especially with the salt and sugar contents. I am a little shocked to see the popcorn, since mostly all the packaged food companies are looking for ways to reduce trans fat after all the negative attention had been focused on it.

Healthy is relative. Each person is different on the inside. Metabolisms are not all the same.
I’m sick of posts about this kind of thing.

How can the vegetarian one possibly have that much?! I see the cheese, and the humongous roll, but still!
guest
Lolololol yep, had that type of Arizona iced tea once… looked at the nutritional facts while drinking it and was like “<__< why so many calories?”
guest
I’m more surprised that anyone actually thought those were good for them in the first place.
guest
None of them are a surprise at all. I had my rude awakening a few months ago and so now I pretty much overestimate the calories in anything I order at a restaurant because there is not much choice for things that taste good and are also healthy. Also, the Arizona tea has a nutrition label, doesn’t it? How can that be a surprise? meh. Oh well. I guess not everyone is as obsessed with it as I am sometimes.
guest
here’s a novel idea: look at nutrition and find healthy alternatives. It’s so easy to find similar, healthy ingredients to all of these choices and cut the calories, fat, and price in half.
I mean, really.
guest
I have never in my life had any of these so…
guest
No. This is why I don’t eat out a lot. When you cook or even grow your own food you’re able to actually know what is in your meal.

How in the hell could anyone think these are HEALTHY. I could see how someone could think they are okay to eat, but healthy!? Thank god I am studying holistic health.
guest
The Jamba Juice meal isn’t actually THAT bad, it is a meal, you aren’t supposed to eat anything else with it, and they are really filling.

this list really isn’t shocking .

@millionofstars@xanga - popcorn is okay if you pop it yourself!
guest
oh no! not even the 100 calorie popcorn bags? so depressing, I love those things.
guest
Delicious.
guest
not surprising…all u can TASTE in the olive garden shrimp one is salt XD…i was more shocked wen i found out bagels and granola bars were bad for you…as well as that fig newtons had more calories/sodium then samoa’s…..
guest
A better question is, why are you shocked?
guest
@babybug329@xanga - I think it’s because it’s kettle corn popcorn, not the regular kind. I’ve checked out the food labels on the regular, buttery kind, and they’re really not that bad. Though my all-time favourite snack food is air-popped popcorn with just a little bit of butter and Lawry’s Seasoned Salt.
guest
all of these items don’t shock me at al… i would’ve assumed that they’re all fattening and dense in calories
guest
who claimed pumpkin muffins are healthy?
orchid / 153 posts
duh. who the fuck thinks any of those are healthy?
guest
i couldn’t believe the calorie count on some of that food! it was horrific.
hydrangea / 59 posts
If people made these things themselves it would be soooooooooo much better. Every single thing on this list.
guest
you couldn’t make the sub sandwich more unappealing xD
guest
i’m pretty shocked but what can you expect from foods that have been processed, frozen, re-heated, tampered with, and just slapped with a whole bunch of seasonings and condiments …FAT! I love to eat and try to stick to healthy things and thank god i’m not attracted to ANY of these “healthy” foods.
OY!

lol at thinking anything called “Blimpie” is healthy.
