About four months ago, a “Create Your Own Cupcake” shop opened up in my college town. The place has been a hit ever since it opened, but I was surprised when I found out another cupcake shop was being built just a few blocks away. I mean, I love cupcakes just as much as the next person, but I’m starting to think that America has become obsessed with these mini treats.
Within recent years, “designer” cupcake shops have developed a cult following, thanks mostly to celebrities. The first name that comes to my mind is Sprinkles Cupcakes:
Food Network even has a television dedicated to America’s (new) favorite dessert, Cupcake Wars.
Cupcakes are also the hot new decorating scheme, a la this ceramic cupcake soap dispenser from Urban Outfitters:
And as if decorating your apartment with cupcakes wasn’t enough, you can also accessorize with them!
Cupcake & Heart Necklace, $1.50 from Forever 21
Sweet Treats Earrings, $2.80 from Forever 21
Am I obsessed with cupcakes? Not entirely, but I can see why people love them so much; they’re cute, fun to make and eat. However, I’m still not convinced they deserve so much hype.
Are you obsessed with all things cupcakes? Why do you think they’re so appealing?

Cool story, bro.

It’s so funny that you write this! I read an article that said that cupcakes were “out” and pie was “in” (because it reminds people of home), but I still see cupcakes everywhere and no pie!
The jewelry you picked out is cute

@brrraaaiiins@xanga Tell it again.

They’re tiny little packages of awesome! Plus, it lets me have my cake AND eat it too.

Cupcakes are big here. I don’t know. I think it gives people the excuse to eat a whole cake without looking like that poor boy from Matilda.
guest
They are making me money that’s about the extent of my obsession. I did one order just for fun for my nieces birthday and got 2 more to follow. I think it’s less mess and hassle for the person giving the party and being able to give someone their own little treat sort of personalizes the event. Either way it’s a cash cow and I say MOOOOOOOOO

Now I’m craving cupcakes!

I believe around the era of June Cleaver.
And, cupcakes are my childhood. In elementary school we’d always have little parties and someone would have cupcakes. They seemed so awesome, just brings back good memories. I love making them to bring back the same memories I used to have to my younger family members. I am the maker of cupcakes.

@NKICRT3R@xanga - this is my life—all day errday.

i like cupcakes. until you’ve tried a classic vanilla sprinkles cupcake (“madagascar bourbon vanilla cupcake with creamy vanilla frosting,” hngggg), you are completely unauthorized to say that cupcakes are unworthy of their hype.
guest
the cupcake craze started 5-6 years ago. old news, they’re on their way out.

I don’t think they’re that good. Or regular cake for that matter. It’s all too sweet for me. I like dark chocolate the best.
guest
Because they’re cute, they’re portable, they’re one serving, easy to clean up after… What’s undeserved about the hype? I think it’s great that there are now shops where you can buy a little mini cake whenever you want!
guest
they’re cute adorable and delicious.
guest
its become the new fad i guess
guest
There is nothing wrong with this. Cupcakes are amazing *_*

I think the decorations, innovative flavor combos and “gourmet” ingredients is the trendy part about the cupcakes. Small, individual cakes never became a fad in my book, I still remember when I was a kid, it was the choice of sweet that parents would bring for the classroom birthday parties. I think the next big thing should be tiny 4″ cakes. Layered, frosted and decorated like any cake from a bakery, but tiny, in a box with 2 forks to share with a special someone. For the record, while Sprinkles is driving distance to me, yet I have no desired to visit.

okay i liked cupcakes before they were cool. and they are awesome because they’re so cute & delicious! but i’m pretty sure not everyone is obsessed since this amazing cupcake stand in my local mall went out of business

It’s the new froyo.

Cupcakes are easy portion control. You can see how much you’ve eaten by the wrappers left behind. When I have a whole cake in front of me I’m like MORE PLEASE.
guest
Because Americans are fat and they love cake. They also are obsessed with things that are really tiny. Combine the two = cupcake.
guest
the name itself is adorable; cupcakes
muffins on the other hand give me a visual of fatty muffintops. thus, no muffin obsession.

Haha… those cupcake earrings look like boobs

Now I really want a cupcake….
guest
i have always liked cupcakes. Not enough to wear them but I still enjoy. I would totally rock cupcakes at my wedding. That way what I want and what my guy wants can happen. And they won’t get too dry.
A cupcake is like..a personal, little cake made just for me. Even if there are fifty more just like it.

cupcakes combine cuteness and food

I’d rather see more bakeries that bake bread, etc, stuff we eat on a more regular basis.

@ashleya - that was in People Stylewatch, wasn’t it?! I remember reading about pie being what’s “in” and that’s the only place I can think of that devotes a page to what’s “in” and what’s “out” lol.
I think cupcakes are appealing because 1) they’re single portions, 2) they’re cute, 3) the wrappers and frosting help them stay moist and delicious, 4) The frosting to cake ratio is more ideal, and 5) they’re delicious! The cool thing about cupcake shops is that they come up with all kinds of unique flavors that store you wouldn’t normally try making at home, or you wouldn’t find at a local grocery store. Also, if people don’t like to bake, they can still get a high quality, tasty treat.
@bAbiiExxPiNay@xanga - why choose when you can enjoy both?! (I lovelovelove froyo)

I’ve been planning on buying that Forever 21 necklace since I saw it last week on the website. I think it’s soo cute !
guest
I think it’s because people are fat asses! Also it’s cute
guest
well i really hope its not just a fad since i hope to one day make a living off of my cupcakes.
guest
Am I odd if I say I don’t like cupcakes that much?
guest
@suggestivetongue@xanga - That kid from Matilda was my hero. I always wanted to get my hands on that chocolate cake. NOMMMMMMMMMMMMM.
I usually hate silly trends, but this cupcake thing can go on for as long as it wants! I seldom get to eat them, but they really are wonderful little treats. Though I’d like to see macaroons become more popular in the states! Really wondering what they taste like.
guest
Ahhhh I had a Crumbs cupake last night. It’s handheld cake
cake makes me happy.
guest
We have a cupcake places in the United Kingdom,
I had my first cupcake similar to this yesterday, but I think the ones we had were similar to mufins with topping and various chocolate pieces.
The one I had a rolo chocolate on with pink icing.
However I did not enjoyed it

Cupcakes used to make me think of kids birthday parties. Now they make me think of expensive gourmet shops.
Trends in dessert is a strange idea IMO, but it’s true–there are cupcake places popping up all over my town. Frozen yogurt places are big too.
I think they all taste good (duh, they’re desserts) but I don’t see how they’re all going to stay in business, unless everybody starts eating dessert ALL THE TIME. (Anybody know the obesity rate in ‘merica these days…?)
guest
i love cupcakes! I don’t know why, but I just do.
guest
cupcakes piss me off. they are fad, just like frozen yogurt was/is. next big thing are cake balls. this is why america is fat.
guest
CREATE YOUR OWN CUPCAKE?!
whatttttt. <3
guest
@sugar_mama@xanga - ew, i work at a frozen yogurt shop and i think our shit is nasty. tcby though, <3 too bad they don’t have one here.
guest
Because they’re awesome. I only like the banana-chocolate cupcake from Sprinkles, but I LOVE Magnolia Bakery’s cupcakes/every dessert. I wish there was one on the West coast. [I edit my statement - I found in LA!]
