Some time ago, the country of New Zealand put out a ban on crazy baby names. Over one hundred names were rejected so far this year. At first I thought this was a bit insane. Parents should be able to name their kids what they want, right? Then I saw some selections from the list.
The ban was put into place when a set of twins were named after cigarettes, and someone else named their baby Violence. There was also a girl was named Talula Does the Hula From Hawaii. She was so upset with it that she legally changed it at nine years old.
Some of the rejected baby names included:
Lucifer
Messiah
Mr
Baron
Bishop
Duke
General
Judge
Justice
King
Knight
89
89? Who names their baby after a number?
Letters, such as C, D, I, and T, were also refused, as well as using punctuation marks. Keep in mind that the country’s Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages didn’t think of these and ban them. Parents actually tried to name their kids these. Apple seems pretty normal right now, doesn’t it?
What do you think of this ban, Lovelies? Would you give your baby a crazy, unique name? [via Herald Sun]

My friend named her dog Lucifer.

I’ll name mine after stars. Like my username, except minus the epsilon. But I don’t want to have a spawn. I’m fine with my husky and two kitties.

I think this is a great idea. I feel so bad for children that are named stupid, ridiculous, joke-ass names (Talula Does the Hula from Hawaii? Are you FUCKING kidding me?) and they deserve the right to have this bullshit stopped before they have to go through the headache of legal work to get it changed.

Duke and Justice i dont think are bad but i agree its kinda hard to pronounce a name thats only : ! ;?
My neighbor said he wants to put a click in his kinds name like the click sounds you make when we put your tongue on the roof of your mouth..i cant describe it.

First you say that parents should be able to name their kids what they want. Then you change your mind once you see something on the list. This is inconsistency, and what it means is, you DON’T think parents should be able to name their kids what they want.
I think a ban on names is ridiculous. Even weird parents have the right to raise their children as they see fit.

@x__RainOnHerParade@xanga - Talula is not a joke name..it means”leaping waters” in the Choctaw language, though it may actually mean “town” in the Creek language. It is also a common name in the Carribean. Names are based on cultural back round. You should try doing the research on your name, where it comes from and what it means. The gvt should have no right to ban names. It’s a parent’s right to name their child whatever for whatever reason.

I remember a while back there were some people who named their two kids (One of them Adolf Hitler, and the other another Nazi officer, can’t remember who) and I think DHS actually TOOK THE KIDS.
I’d definetly name my kid something, not crazy, but not common.
I feel sorry for people that have super common names like Sara, Kayla, Joshua, John, Michael.. ect
My name isn’t super-common, but I still hate it.. I just can’t decide what to change it TO.
BTW, it is NOT cheap to change your name!
I think my mum paid 400 dollars where I’m at…

@lisajenelle@xanga - I like those names too, and I’m gonna gather your neighbor might be Afrikan. I’ve heard of this clicking language… But like anything else, it just takes practice to learn how to pronounce it. I’m sure when said correctly it’s a very pretty name.

@nubian_qween@xanga - Talula is fine. Talula Doing the Hula From Hawaii…that’s not fine.
rose / 791 posts
@nubian_qween@xanga - Talula is fine. Not “Talula does the Hula from Hawaii” – that’s just setting your child up for a lifetime of misery. That’s not okay.

I don’t really get why Duke and Justice are banned though… I think they both work as pretty normal names. I actually know someone named Mr, except he spells it out as Mistah. Quite strange.

@WaitingToShrug@xanga - I simply meant that parents should have some creativity, but when you start considering names that are numbers, punctuation, and Violence, I don’t think it’s acceptable. Sorry if there was any confusion

I can’t believe this. I’ll try to find the same kind of list for France.

The problem with weird and crazy names is when the child grows up and goes into the real world, they may have trouble getting corporate jobs and all that other great stuff. Not to mention being made fun of in school.
There are some names a child just should not have. A girl I went to high school with named her daughter Cunt because she was pissed off at the baby’s father. What the fuck is wrong with people.
Justice is a pretty awesome name though, for the meaning.

lol 89

@ashleya - I’m not confused. It’s pretty simple, you either believe that parents have the right to name their child what they want, or that they don’t have that right. A name being unappetizing to other people doesn’t take away the parents’ right to raise their child as they fit, including naming them what they want.
Some countries have lists of acceptable names that parents have to choose from. That’s the next logical step after randomly banning certain names from being used. It might lead to less discomfort around people with odd names, but it also takes away a little piece of individual rights, which I’m never okay with.

I think it is ridiculous to tell people what they can or can’t name their children. That is way too much government intrusion for my tastes.
guest
@WaitingToShrug@xanga - Yeah, but when they “see fit” to name their poor baby “Lucifer” or not even a name but a damn number or set of punctuation marks… It’s not all black and white, really. Yes, I think parents should be able to name their child whatever they want, but at a certain point the names are just too damn weird. Like, weird enough that the child will be teased and probably feel compelled to legally change it when they’re older. Who gives a shit about the parents’ getting all butt hurt about not being allowed to name their kid Talula Does the Hula From Hawaii or Violence? It just makes me wonder what it going through their heads when they choose these names, because they’re definitely not concerned about the kid. There’s a huge amount of names out there that are unique, and won’t give the child problems in the future when they’re trying to get a job and explain to their prospective employers why they are named “;”

I think those are kinda crazy but it’s not the government’s place to ban kid names. The kid can legally have their name changed when they get older if they hate it.

@blackspiders@xanga - exactly.

@lisajenelle@xanga - the kalahari ppl have clicks in their names, so it’s not as out there as it seems
. maybe for our culture, yeah, hahah.

My two year old cousin named her puppy 8 9. I named my first dog Brown Brown. You’re all allowed to be jealous of my 5-year old pet naming skills
guest
@eomona@xanga - She named her daughter “Cunt?” What the fuck. I’d change my name as soon as I had a shot to if I were that poor girl. Wow.
@NKICRT3R@xanga - Justice is pretty normal, it’s not that far from Justin… and it’s not like it means anything bad. lol

As a parent, I agree with the fact that parents should be able to name their child whatever they wish. I get the desire for your child to be different and stand out. The need to be “unique” and all that. However, society as a whole seems to determine what is “normal” and you have to prepare both your children and yourself for a lot of hostility and misunderstanding. For example, are you going to be able to handle explaining WHY you named your child that, or having people look at you as if you have a unicorn standing on your head? How will you be able to handle the day when your child comes home from school crying because the other children made fun of them for their “weird” name? OR can you (or your child) handle everyone not being able to pronounce it correctly when they see it on paper?
I have come across some very unorthodox names. I knew triplets whose government names were Chocolate, Cocoa, and Caramel. I’ve met girls named Champagne, Alizay (I’m assuming from Alize – the liquor), La-a (La-dash-a), and Corsica. I’ve met boys named Seven, Major, Myson (get it? My Son), Eriyun (Ay-ree-ahn). I could go on and on. Working in child care, I’ve seen and heard them all. Personally, if I am blessed in the future with more children, I will name them something unique, but I will definitely not be naming my son Lucifer.
guest
I see how certain names could be harmful for kids, but where do you draw the line? Who gets to decide? Way too much government involvement for my tastes.
guest
I kinda like Bishop and Justice. Duke isn’t all that bad either, but reminds me of short shorts.
This is dumb. I really wish people would stop worrying about everyone else and worry about themselves. If a child isn’t teased for their name, they will be teased for something else. Such is life.

Talula Does the Hula From Hawaii?
Hahaha. That’s funny.

I think Lucifer, Duke, Baron, Justice, and Knight are perfectly fine names. I think any name should be allowed as long as it doesn’t have any punctuation in it.
guest
I don’t think anyone should be able to tell you what you can name you children, that’s just silly… it’s also silly to name them stupid things… because some names are just stupid, no matter who you are… Justice, I sorta like that one and don’t know why it would be banned?
I’d much rather see idiots just being banned from procreating! LOL. I’ve seen lots of weird names here in rural Oklahoma…: Dollar Bill, Felony, Snow White (White was her maiden name), Darlin’ (with the apostrophe), Spur, Rope, and one stupid chick named her kid Justn. Their last name was Case. Seriously??? Justn (with no I) Case. Gah.
But… idiots are free to be idiots. Freedom of idiocy!

what about 69 though? is it still okay?!
“Period. get your butt right here and wash your hands for dinner.” ”Dash. stop bugging your sister”
great childhood i foresee

I know a guy named Judge, and my friends naming her son Justice.

@WaitingToShrug@xanga - reminds me of after 9/11 when a mother in the US wanted to name her some Bin Laden they prohibit her from doing so and they wouldnt let her out of the hospital until she named baby something else…

I knew a kid named Justice…. his mom’s name was Charity. They might be a bit unusual but they aren’t awful.

Has no one heard of Duke Ellington? Why is Duke on the banned list?!

@lisajenelle@xanga - HEY! EXCLAMATION MARK! DINNER TIME! Semicolon, will you please tell you brother to get down here. I’ve been busy all day and Question Mark is getting fussy.

@blackspiders@xanga - totally agreed.
guest
@shadezofgray52@xanga - Uhhh…His name wasn’t actually Duke. It was Edward.
I’m sorry, but I think there are names that should be banned. Adolf Hitler being one, because it is so offensive. If I named my kid Nigger do you think they would really be able to get through life without someone beating them up for it? No. If you name your child some offensive name it WILL cause harm to the child.
Preferably, I’d rather be in Wales, where there is a set list of names you can choose from for your child. All of these “unique” names have been correlated with a Selfish personality.
guest
LAWLZ and they say you “grow into your name” and “your name is a part of you”> I wonder what these kids will end up like!
guest
I have met a Mr. I have also met two people named Judge and one person named Colonel [isn't on the list but should be]. To be fair, Judge and Colonel were brothers and Judge had a Judge jr. Those are just all such terrible names.
guest
I think people should be able to name their kids whatever. The kid can change it later. Yea, it gets extreme (especially with punctuation marks – maybe ex-nay on that part) but some people are extreme. Some of the weird names (Duke & Justice) I like. Naming your kid Lucifer is a bit harsh. A lot of names are dumb, dumb, dumb but whatever. I have the names planned for my children – boys are Javier, Luis, Carlos, and Lucas; girls are Catalina and Elisabetta. My family of course thinks those are all awful names and very ‘unusual’.
But my dad is Doral, his brother is Sylvan, and his other brother is Claire (with the ‘e’, which is considered to be the ‘girl version’). My family consists of a lot of people with names like Delores, Arlene, Casper, Agitta, etc. but they are all Norwegian.
guest
Yeah, I would really hate myself if I was given a strange name… Although Tu can’t really get any stranger… Especially since it’s more commonly for boys…
guest
I know several people named Justice
guest
I don’t see the offensiveness of some of the names but yeah, most of those…why would you name your child that? What…what is wrong with people?

OP:
Reminds me of this and this.
But on the actual topic of the post…It seems a bit too much government interference in people’s lives and especially parenting.

@lisajenelle@xanga - haha wtf. I know what you mean.

@lisajenelle@xanga - In Xhosa alot of names have clicks in them. For English speakers it’s difficult to pronounce them, and when you have a lisp like me, it’s nearly impossible, which is why I resort to nicknames for my friends who have clicks in their names.

My son’s name is Bishop. I think the ban is ridiculous. And from what was described above, that means that the pencil pushing bureaucrat in the position actually gets to make the decision, which implies if he/she biases and opinions could come into it. Imagine if say the Beckhams had been standing there wanting to name Harper Seven, do you think the bureaucrat would have been persuaded to take a different approach for them?
Though I am totally wanting to have another child now, just so I can name him or her Lucifer.
guest
I personally know a Baron & a General — why were those rejected ?

hahahaha 89

I know two Messiahs. They both go by Siah (Sy-uh). I don’t think anything’s wrong with their name per se. However, I do understand they get tired of explaining why they were named Messiah. It’s definitely better than Lucifer.
While I’m open to unique/interesting names, why saddle your child with a name that would leave him/her open to ridicule? I read somewhere some couple named their children after nazi-inspired names. C’mon now. What were they thinking?
guest
I live in New Zealand and went to school with a girl named Justice so i’m not too sure why thats on the list?
guest
I like the names on the list.
Even 89 could be an appropriate name. doesn’t Erica Badu (sp?) have a son named Seven?
all of our names mean something. All of our names used to be common words used in everyday language. My name means “dweller of the dark (or grey) castle” and back when it would have been common to use that particular phrase to describe a person it would have seemed odd to name a child the term “Leslie”
however, now it is pretty common. and normal. even dull.
and while i personallly wouldnt choose to name a child Lucifer, or Ocho Cinco, or Hulla Girl does Good It doesnt mean that the parents shouldnt be allowed to do it. There are an aweful lot of common “normal” names that i find utterly disgusting and that just means i’m gla i have the option not to use them for my kids.

@nubian_qween@xanga - reazlly?! TALULA is a BEAUTIFUL name!…. “Talula-does-the-hula-from-Hawaii” is simply asenine, and sets the child up for ridicule.

I have just sent in my sons registration and have choosen to call him Czar. I will be extremely dissapointed if that name is rejected as they may see it as an unearned Title…Im hoping not!
