Going to the dentist, finals week, moving; what do all three of these things have in common? They’re all absolutely terrible. These past few days I’ve been moving out of my apartment and UGH, it’s such an awful, awful task. Why? Because of the four following reasons:
1) No matter how efficiently you try to pack everything, you always end up making at least 8,900,349 trips. Back and forth, back and forth. Bonus points,(if that’s what you want to call them),if you live on the third+ floor of your apartment building, like I do.
2) The weather almost always NEVER cooperates whenever it’s moving day/weekend. It’s either pouring rain or swelteringly hot. It’s like Mother Nature peers into my room, spots my calendar and says, “Oh, Gabrielle is moving next weekend? Bring on the heat waves!”
3) Sometimes, depending on when leases end and begin, you can wind up being “homeless” for a few days. I have to move out of my current apartment by a certain date, but can’t move into my new place until five days later! So guess who is couch surfing and living out of her car for five days? This girl.
4) Sometimes, when I’m packing up all my things, I imagine that they will all magically travel to my new apartment. Then I snap back to reality and realize, “crap….I have to move all of this stuff AGAIN.”
What do you hate most about moving, Lovelies?

Moving does suck, without question! And it is even worse as you get older, have kids, etc. because then there is so much more stuff that you have accumulated. So at least be thankful that you are only moving yourself. The only cool thing about moving a household is the garage sale where you actually make money selling crap you had to get rid of anyway!

Yes. I am moving next month. It sucks. Mostly because you can’t pack up everything until the last minute because you use so many things. I tried packing in advance but could only pack up so much. I’m dreading the actual move date, it will be a tiring day.

I hate EVERYTHING about moving. I was just moving back into my boyfriends yesterday, & dropped my dresser on my big toe, which is now broken. So thats what I hated the most this time lol.

It does suck. Best way for when you’re single? Bite the bullet and pack the 1-2 days before at least you only feel overwhelmed for a short time. You don’t have that much stuff. Family? My mom packs up the whole 2-BR apartment (with help) in a week…i guess if you have more stuff (my family’s pretty spartan) you need somewhat more time, but it’s a benchmark.
Oh, and the way to avoid 8 billion trips? Pretend you’re moving across country. So when your truck/movers get there, you have to be READY. Then you’ll make minimal trips.

I’ve only ever moved into/out of a dorm room, and even that makes me borderline suicidal, lol. I can only imagine what moving into/out of an apartment or house is like. But hey, at least you’re almost done, right?

Hate unpacking the MOST… Packing is no big deal. I’m usually pretty efficient when it comes to packing. But unpacking is a BITCH when you’re in a new place and don’t have enough space for everything. >.> I moved into my summer apartment and had the biggest issue with finding a place for everything… That, I think, is the worst part about moving…

I hate moving more than anything. It’s exciting being in a new place. But there was a time where I moved 3 times within 6 months. Then 10 months later, I moved again. I moved 5 times in two years. Right now, I still have boxes in my house. I don’t even want to unpack because I feel like I am going to have to move again soon. -___-

Why are you moving? Just wondering. The five days without your own place can suck, but I would use it as an excuse to have lots of fun with my friends, sleep overs, and stay out extra late cause I have no home to return to anyway lol.
I have moved so many times…so I feel your pain.
Best of luck to you.

Third floor? HA try 12th floor in a dorm, and they shut down elevators. So not excited for August 22nd to come around. And on top of all that, Oklahoma is expecting heat waves into the 115′s. Okay, rant over

It’s a universally well acknowledged fact that moving sucks. Why would you write a post reminding us of that??

Focus on the positive. Here’re 4 reasons why moving is great:
1. You get to clean out and find stuff you thought was missing/never knew you had
2. A fresh start, another chance to better reorganize your life
3. Helps you become a more efficient, tidy person at your next moving trip
4. Help build and tone some muscles by lifting those heavy boxes

@wing_stock@xanga - Very true.

I agree with point number one! I lived in an apartment with my ex for awhile and he just *had* to have an apartment on the third floor.
But at least it was good exercise.
But then when it came time for us to move out, guess which one of us didn’t have any help whatsoever moving all of her stuff down three flights of stairs? Me! haha.

Totally with you guys here. I’m moving back on campus next month, and while I’m actually excited to move back in, I know moving day will be such a pain!

When I was moving in a blizzard, I wished it was raining or hot. I’d take those any day over a blizzard.

This is all so true! Especially the million trips and heat waves.

rent a dolly. when I moved, we stacked the boxes onto a dolly cart and pushed that to the moving truck to save nearly half the time compared to carrying the boxes.

I hate finding things that have been lying around that I no longer need or use. It’s such a hassle trying to sort out the things you want to bring with you and the things you want to get rid of.
guest
LOL! I’m moving soon as well…after 20 years in the same house….purging damn near everything…
guest
I agree, moving is no picnic in the park. But it is a good time to purge anything you don’t need. The last time I moved, it was a lot of stuff, but we threw away a lot of stuff as well. It wasn’t as bad as I thought it was going to be until I got sick with a respiratory infection that left me wheezing and having trouble breathing. After we purged everything, we vowed to never have that much junk again! The other thing I hate about moving, is buying boxes to move the stuff. What a waste of money. And plus, finding a place to store them for later because you paid so much in the first place! Of course, you can get some free boxes, but they’re never sturdy enough to carry the heavy things. We ended up giving the boxes away to friends when they needed some.

You’re pretty negative. How about a list of the best things about moving instead?
guest
if u hate moving so much, dont join or marry into the military lol. ive got moving down to a science.
guest
Losing stuff ! It doesn’t matter if I label boxes, there’s always a few things that I lose.
Oh and once I moved, and a couple hours later at my new house it was like “hey… where’s my bird??”
It’s never good to forget things at the old house… especially a bird.

I..actually like moving. I guess I’m out of the club.

I’m packing a truck today and moving 400+ miles away tomorrow. I hate moving. I hate packing boxes; I hate packing the truck; I hate driving the truck; I hate unpacking everything. I hate having to make sure all my utilities and services are cancelled at the old place and turned on at the new place. I hate having to change my address and get a new driver’s license, title, and registration in a new state. Moving is just a huge pain in the ass, but I’m excited about why I’m doing it.
