When I decided I wanted to write about my favorite quotes from the entire Harry Potter series, I guess I’d forgotten just how many of them there are. So instead of giving you a massive novel to read all at once, this little trip down memory lane harkens back to the first half of the saga.
JK Rowling is annoyingly prolific, and has come out with dozens (if not hundreds) of gems in her thousands of pages of writing. Lovelyish’s Harry Potter Week would be incomplete without a tribute to the lines that made us laugh, the lines that made us cry, and the lines that made us think.
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (from Amazon)
“It does not do to dwell on dreams and forget to live.” -Albus Dumbledore
“It takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to our enemies, but just as much to stand up to our friends.” -Albus Dumbledore
“To the well-organized mind, death is but the next great adventure.” -Albus Dumbledore
“Now, you two – this year, you behave yourselves. If I get one more owl telling me you’ve – you’ve blown up a toilet or –”
“Blown up a toilet? We’ve never blown up a toilet.”
“Great idea though, thanks, Mum.” -Fred and George Weasley
“I hope you’re pleased with yourselves. We could all have been killed – or worse, expelled. Now if you don’t mind, I’m going to bed.” -Hermione Granger
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets ($10.99 from Amazon)
“Pass the frying pan.”
“You’ve forgotten the magic word,” said Harry irritably.
The effect of this simple sentence on the rest of the family was incredible: Dudley gasped and fell off his chair with a crash that shook the whole kitchen; Mrs. Dursley gave a small scream and clapped her hands to her mouth; Mr. Dursley jumped to his feet, veins throbbing in his temples.
“Excuse me?” said Ron sharply. “What d’you mean, a bit of whoever we’re changing into? I’m drinking nothing with Crabbe’s toenails in it – “
“It is our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities.” -Albus Dumbledore
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban ($10.99 from Amazon)
“You look in excellent health to me, Potter, so you will excuse me if I don’t let you off homework today. I assure you that if you die, you need not hand it in.” – Professor McGonagall
“Right, you’ve got a crooked sort of cross. That means you’re going to have ‘trials and suffering’… sorry about that… but there’s a thing that could be the sun — hang on — that means ‘great happiness’ — so you’re going to suffer but be very happy about it…” -Harry Potter
“You think the dead we loved ever truly leave us? You think that we don’t recall them more clearly than ever in times of great trouble? Your father is alive in you, Harry, and shows himself most plainly when you have need of him. How else could you produce that particular Patronus? Prongs rode again last night.” -Albus Dumbledore
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire ($12.99 from Amazon)
“You will have your reward, Wormtail. I will allow you to perform an essential task for me, one that many of my followers would give their right hands to perform…” -Voldemort
It’s a strange thing, but when you are dreading something, and would give anything to slow down time, it has a disobliging habit of speeding up.
“If you want to know what a man’s like, take a good look at how he treats his inferiors, not his equals.” -Sirius Black
“You fail to recognize that it matters not what someone is born, but what they grow to be!”-Albus Dumbledore
Stay tuned for part two, books 5-7, coming soon!

I totally agree. JK Rowling is a truly amazing writer. She’s MUCH better than “she-who-shall-not-be-named-who-writes-about-sparkling-vampires”

How could you forget this!!!!:
“Happiness can be found in the darkest of times, if one remembers to turn on the light.” -dumbledore

I have been a secret Voldemort fan since the beginning, so here’s my favorite quote from the first book:
“There is no good or evil: only power and those too weak to seek it.”
guest
@JEDIJESSICUH@xanga - I was just about to comment with that exact same quote! Definitely one of my favorites.
guest
LOVE these quotes please do the rest of the books ^^ very inspiring!!!!

you know I was at the theater the other day, and the trailer for Twilight Breaking Dawn Part 1 was on, and it said “the best storyteller of all time”
and I am not a die hard Harry Potter fan,and I don’t have a special hatred for Twilight neither, but I think “the best storyteller of all time” is a bit stretched.
because i think Harry Potter is way better than Twilight. hands down. the character plot make more sense.
I wish sometimes they just don’t exagerate.
I get that a lot of people love twilight but you know….

I think I might need to go through my books again…

this was Ron, not Harry.

the entire books 1-7 were pretty good, as one big long quote

Albus Dumbledore is one of the most influential character in Harry Potter series. I admire him so much.

“It does not do to dwell on dreams and forget to live.” -Albus Dumbledore
That’s my favorite. I considered getting it tattooed on me.
guest

These were fun to read. Looking forward to the next set. Makes me want to read the books all over again!
guest
That Albus Dumbledore has some brilliant quotes
guest
Dumbledore : “After all this time Severrus?”
Snape : “Always.”
guest
“It does not do to dwell on dreams and forget to live.”
–Probably one of my favorite Harry Potter quotes of all time.

Dumbledore always has the best quotes. I can’t remember any at the moment.

“If you want to know what a man’s like, take a good look at how he treats his inferiors, not his equals.” -Sirius Black
I have always felt that way. You can especially take a good look if you happen to be dining out with this person. You can always catch a glimpse of their character when you watch the interaction between them and their server.

@strax@xanga - This!

I forgot what an awesome writer she is because I never look at all the quotes in the book when I’m reading. Then you look at them out of context and I’m all wow, she’s smart

Dumbledore: “Alas, earwax!”

@just_breathe11@xanga - This part makes me sob every time. Even just this quote brings tears to my eyes!!

I think this one is my favorite of the whole series: “And now Harry, let us step out into the night and pursue that flighty
temptress, adventure.” – Albus Dumbledore
Oh, and “Nitwit! Blubber! Oddment! Tweak!”
rose / 795 posts
@dinguyen@xanga - It the movie, it was Ron, but originally in the book, Harry says it about Ron’s tea leaves. All of these quotes are from the books, not the movies, so that’s why they might seem a little different

Dumbledore has always had the best advice/quotes (that’s why I admired him as a mentor, advisor, and a friend to Harry), but you also put one of my favorite quotes from Sirius Black who I love so much that it hurt when he passed since I also judge a person’s character in the same way:
“If you want to know what a man’s like, take a good look at how he treats his inferiors, not his equals.” -Sirius Black

@just_breathe11@xanga - I LOVED that quote! everytime I read the 7th novel and get to that part, it always sends shivers down my back. I love Snape after all (:

Here are two of my favorite quotes from HP that weren’t mentioned in this post:
“It is a curious thing, Harry, but
perhaps those who are best suited to power are those who have never
sought it. Those who, like you, have leadership thrust upon them, and
take up the mantle because they must, and find to their own surprise
that they wear it well.”
-Dumbledore
&
“It is the unknown we fear when we look upon death and darkness, nothing more.”
-Dumbledore
ahh this post is making me want to go back and reread all of the Harry Potter books again!
guest
I wonder how she came up with Dumbledore’s words of wisdom. Did she just think ‘em up herself, or swipe ‘em from elsewhere?
guest
HP forever and always.

haha, i LOVE when dumbledore breaks down and eats an every-flavor-bean in the first book, “Alas! EARWAX!” .. i have more but that one actually made me laugh out loud while reading.

This is only directly related but you know what I feel the movies missed? Harry’s funny/sarcastic side. In the books he picks out little funny jabs at people and he’s pretty hilarious. They didn’t really show that in the movies. He’s much more serious there.
orchid / 237 posts
Aww…I love all of these
guest
“I? I see a pair of fuzzy socks. One can never have enough socks.” (something like that)
“Alas! Earwax!”

“There’s no need to call me ‘sir,’ Professor.”
guest
can’t remember one specifically, but the ones listed are pretty good

I like Dumbledore’s quotes and all but I also like some of the funny quotes. BRB while I go dig through my HP books again~
guest
i think “Dobby did not mean to kill, only maim, or seriously injure!” should be included in this list

i love all of the Albus Dumbledore quotes. he’s fantastically wise

McGonagall is amazing and I think the actress (Maggie Smith) did such an amazing job bringing the character to life for me.

@jasminekhan6_3@xanga - I loooove that too, but I was trying to stick with the books as opposed to the movies. I had to narrow the playing field down somehow!
orchid / 242 posts
@lohanzodiac06@xanga - I promise, those quotes were in the first draft of this post! lol. I literally spent three hours finding quotes and trying to whittle down my list, and unfortunately those got cut. But I love them too!

“It is our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities.” -Albus Dumbledore
I really like that one.
guest
&& Of course the majority of the great quotes come from Dumbledore.
guest
I loooooooooooooove them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! But I think for book 5-7 they should include more of the twin’s quotes. They’re so funny!!

Dumbledore. He’s a total G.

One of my favorite quotes is when Harry is talking to Snape and he says ‘Theres no need to call me Sir, Sir.’ I cant remember which book its from, I want to say five but I doubt it lol. I also agree, one of my other faves is ‘…Death is but the next great adventure.’
guest
“It is our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities.” -Albus Dumbledore”
love that quote and I was hoping it was here!
guest
I’m surprised that the howler letter from the 2nd book didn’t make it on this list! It was absolutely hilarious! (x
guest
@semiller3@xanga - @dinguyen@xanga - it was actually said by harry in the book. ron got it in the movie, but it was originally harry that said it in divination class.
guest
My favorite: “It does not do to dwell on dreams and forget to live.”
so i may have missed the deeper thoughts that went into the writing. Great list.
I only read book 1 once when it first came out in the US (i was
