Remember when Americans went nuts in 1999 when our ladies beat China to win the World Cup? Well it’s happening again.
In case you haven’t heard, the United States had its backs to the walls in their quarterfinal game against Brazil, down a goal with only a few ticks on the clock. Abby Wambach headed in a goal to tie the game and the women went on to advance to the semifinal game thanks to penalty kicks.
Here’s the reaction to Wambach’s goal and the penalty kicks from around the country:
What I want to know is, how many more people are there in the world that set up cameras to film them watching TV?
But all kidding aside, way to go ladies! After beating France in the semifinals on Wednesday, they’ll play Japan for the title on Sunday. This is the team’s first appearance in the finals since Brandi Chastain and her abs won it in a shootout for the US in ’99.
Lovelies, are you watching the Women’s World Cup?

I was looking forward to this World Cup since before the men’s tournament ended last year. I remember when we lost in 2003 too. I’m so excited for the final!! I’m pretty nervous, but I get to watch it in Times Square!!! Ok, I’m done now. Go USA!

My facebook was blowing up when this happened since Abby is from our area.

Yah know… it’s been bugging me that Lovelyish has NOT been covering the United States women during the world cup. I’m sure there would be a “Who’s The Hottest Player” one for the mens but the women’s got no coverage until they got to the finals. A-mazing Lovelyish.
No point pretending to care now.
I however have been watching and will be watching come Sunday.

@ShirleyD@xanga - hey, I wrote about the amazingness that is Hope Solo after the Brazil game. That was epic.

Yay for bandwagon soccer fans!

The girls can win but the boys can’t? The U.S. lost to Mexico and I wish they would have won to shut all those annoying a-holes up.

While I’m a big football fan and follow both my club team and my various national teams frequently, I don’t have the same interest in women’s football, so I didn’t jump on the bandwagon.
Everyone loves a success story though. Even though the USWNT has been considered one of the top women’s sides by FIFA for a number of years and routinely outperforms the USMNT who are generally a mediocre side at best.

I’ve never followed Women’s World Cup. I am a big football fan tho and follow other clubs & national teams. Hope Japan wins. I am very impressed how well the US played.

I really hate how almost no one has followed womans soccer up until now. Now that the womans US soccer team is kicking ass, everyone follows and lovea them. I think people are such bullshitters. I mean, congrats to US. Ladies, you are doing a wonderful job. But most people only started watching when US got into the quarter finals and it’s absolute crappola.

I don’t understand why its a terrible thing for people to ‘jump on the bandwagon.’ If we didn’t cheer them on and publicly express our support, people would bitch about us not standing behind our own country or accuse us of being sexist. You can’t have it both ways. Its not a crime to support our soccer team, excuse the rest of us for not following their every breath prior to their recent success. All in all, we live in and love this country. We are proud of these women for the hardship and the great obstacles they have overcome in this tournament, and not to mention they do it with such humility, poise, and grace. They truly represent what it means to be an American.
