We’ve all suspected that glittery pop star Ke$ha uses auto-tune, but now she’s come clean to Conan O’Brien. Sort of.
Okay, so not quite what we expected. I think it’s cool that Ke$ha’s willing to poke fun at herself. It still doesn’t settle the rumors, but do we really need to?
She’s marketing herself as someone who likes to have fun and she makes club music. Does it really matter if she gets a little help?
What do you think of the interview, Lovelies? Do you dislike auto-tune?
guest
She uses auto tune? NO WAY!!! I would have never guessed.
guest
Bahahahaahahaha.
guest
haha that was funny~
If people are taking this seriously, they obviously haven’t watched the video.

Um… this is kind of like saying she also uses hair product to make her hair look wavy…. we don’t really need to talk about it, we just know she uses it.

That was such a waste of 2 minutes and 16 seconds.

The whole point of the video is to point out that DUH she uses auto-tune. What kind of “rumour” is that? It’s super obvious that she does. That doesn’t automatically mean she can’t sing without it but that’s what kind of music she makes. That’s like asking if the Black Eyed Peas use autotune…it’s just obvious.
guest
lolwut. really? i…i.. i had no idea… im heartbroken.
guest
I thought her singing voice just had a robotic undertone to it.
guest
I’m going to be honest, here… I have no idea what auto-tune even is… I thought it was a feature on satellite television that lets you tune in to a selected show just as it’s starting… (if that makes sense)… No clue what it is. Nope. None whatsoever.
And, probably because I don’t know what auto-tune is, I didn’t really understand this video… I’ve seen Ke$ha live in concert, and I’ve heard her speak without microphones or anything. She sounds like a girl. She has a very soft, girlish voice.
So… Yeah… This whole thing just flew over my head and I thought I would self-incriminate by admitting to it.

@MeghanLarissa@xanga - Oooh… Your comment made a little more sense. I think I get it, now. I feel kinda sheepish. lol by the way, I like your display photo.

I can’t stand auto-tune. It just makes the fact that you can get signed even if you can’t sing that much more unacceptable.
daisy / 599 posts
It’s very overused. I can’t stand her real singing voice either.
guest
who cares it music you can basically do whatever you want!
guest
@mydearparker@xanga - exactly!
guest
I don’t really like her and its not surprising at all that she uses auto-tune. I think its cool that shes willing to make fun of herself. I wouldn’t have expected that from her.

I hate auto-tune. It’s completely eliminated talent in pop music.
guest
yes, I’m against auto-tune. with auto-tone anyone can change their voice and be a singer. the ones who actually can sing and have talent in that area would go unnoticed.
daisy / 734 posts
@torturetoy@xanga - auto-tune is a tool used by musicians to make recordings of themselves have perfect pitch– it can be used to make your voice sound techno-ish, like T-Pain or Ke$ha, or it can be used really transparently (Norah Jones has even used it upon occasion). It’s really popular in the music industry because it allows for fewer takes of a song, which saves major money when you’re using producers that cost $300,000/day (one of my friends just graduated from a music production program).
As for the OP, hahahaha go Ke$ha.
guest
@bass_chick57 - OH! That certainly DOES clear things up. Thank you for that.

haha i think anybody knows that most artists use auto tune duh?
guest
LOL! I love Ke$ha. She so crazy. Do I like autotune? Doesn’t matter to me. If it sounds good, it sounds good.
guest
If it’s in dance music I really don’t care because that is how dance music is. It’s not supposed to raw and realistic. All genres of music have a certain thing about them that makes them what they are. Voices in electronic music are supposed to sound not of this world and almost fake. But if there were some people that didn’t know she used auto-tune then I don’t know what to think lol. Although in every song auto-tune is being used, this is not a new thing that only pop stars use. She just uses it consistently and in a over the top kind of way. Not just to balance out the voice which is what it is originally used for.

I want to know if she can sing without it. If so, that’s real talent.
guest
I like her music and I like dancing to it so I really really dont care if it’s auto-tone
guest
no big deal to me, one way or the other
guest
I dislike auto-tune because it means anyone can be a singer without actually having talent.
guest
Everyone auto-tunes these days…
daisy / 505 posts
Haha well I think we all knew before. Ke$ha doesn’t bother me because she doesn’t take herself seriously. It’s not like she thinks she’s making musical masterpieces for all time.
guest
Not a big surprise or a big deal. It would be a bigger deal if she was someone who was actually applauded for her vocal skill, like Christina Aguilera or something. But Ke$ha makes the kind of music that doesn’t really demand much skill except maybe from the producer.
guest
she needs a bullet.. autotune or not..
guest
Okay, I’m not a fan of Lady Gaga, who obviously uses auto-tune too, but you at least know she can sing (even if she doesn’t use that talent all the time). Her music is okay. Then you have people like Ke$ha who “Sing-Talk” (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JelGcEyS6Aw , a parody College Humor made about her). I find Ke-dollarsign-ha ridiculous and a no talent. I think she just talks in this annoying voice and it gets auto-tuned. The only song I thought was worse with the talking that was auto-tuned was “Friday,” which at least for now was a one-time thing.
guest
I’ve heard the unedited and unauto-tuned version of her singing, and it’s horrible. She looks like a drag queen to boot.
guest
I think anyone with ears can tell she does. It’s fine since she’s not marketing herself as this incredibly talented and serious singer…so it almost doesn’t matter at all.
guest
The video was funny, and I’m glad she doesn’t take herself too seriously.
guest
I never would’ve guessed she uses auto-tune! /end sarcasm
If she wants to use it, fine. Should she be making millions of dollars when she’s very clearly edited in every way possible? Absolutely not. Give the money to people who actually have talent.

Hahahaha. This is pretty obviously a joke, and quite a good one. I don’t like Kesha much, but this is funny.
guest
Autotune is for n00bs, and Ke dollar sign a is overrated.
guest
I’ve heard acapella songs by Kesha, she really can sing. Honestly – the auto tune thing matches her persona as a pop artist, it’s her gimmick. And it’s not like we didn’t know. It’s not like she can’t hardly sing, uses auto tune and swears up and down that’s her voice, like other artists we know. Sup Britney.

OHMYGAWD NO!!!

@MiaJoyTheWriter@xanga - She actually can sing, I found a video on youtube one time of her from a long time ago and her voice is absolutely beautiful. I think it was like a country song or something, completely different from her style now, but it was great.
And if people were seriously wondering if she uses auto-tune….COME ON.
guest
if you listen to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ateOF5cifw&feature=related
she really doesn’t sound that different.
guest
I don’t care ABOUT auto-tune.
I don’t care FOR Kesha.
guest
I’m not a fan of auto-tune. If you can’t sing on your own, why should the public pay millions to hear your music when I could just go get an auto-tuner and make my own music…?
Luckily, I detest American music and refuse to listen to it. 75% of the music I listen to is sung by legit singers who not only don’t use auto-tune, but also always sing live (why go to a concert if they just lip sync? really?). I like to have some real-ness in my reality
.
guest
ALL pop records use autotune. Just about any rock on a mainstream label does too.
guest
good stuff, i still enjoy some of her music
guest
Lol, she uses auto-tune and still sounds like shit.
guest
BREAKING NEWS: KE$HA USES BATHROOMS.
guest
@Garishi@xanga - which is why 80% of it literally is terrible. its all about the $$ and not about actual music/songwriting/talent
guest
…. wha… like u can’t hear the auto-tune in her music? You can’t possibly think she’s doing that with her voice alone.
Its disappointing that many of the hyped bands and singers can’t even sing. Gone are the days when Paul McCartney, Stevie Wonder, Elton John, Billy Joel… GREAT
SONG
writers, great
talented musicians
.. that could also..
SING!
And yes there are great song writers, musicians and vocalists today, but the ones that are blown up are mostly pathetic.
now its someone who is “attractive” and “unique”, who producers can market to ‘sing’ the songs thatTHEY write.. and the voice you hear on the cd isn’t remotely close to the ‘singers’ actual voice.
… which is why I don’t bother to listen to it. Its not music. Its “fun” in the form of sound. .but to me it just bothers my ears.
Its ridiculous and a shame.. heck its disrespectful to those who are actually talented but don’t have the money to market themselves. Lots of “indie” music, that doesn’t even have to be extremely underground.. isn’t overproduced, isn’t fake.. and has some great song writing and talent in it. Its a lot more enjoyable and interesting to listen to and actually contains lyrics worth processing in your brain. Some of the junk people sing about is so .. uncreative. Really? you’re going to sing about abuse again? drugs again? money and sex again? oh how intriguing. Idk why people waste their time with overproduced crap.
guest
You guys should really look up her rolling stones cover and her singing “hearts on fire” on youtube. This bitch can actually sing. No joke.
I just wish she’d sing like that in all of her songs.
guest
We didn’t already know that she uses autotune?
guest
@modnarm@xanga - No, I mean it’s the standard now – from the best to the worst. Usually it’s just a little subtle thing to make a good thing sound spot on.
guest
@Garishi@xanga - or something thats bad to sound even worse or catchy enough for people to buy- i.e. kesha, black eyed peas etc.. tho at least their songs are a bit better put together.
auto-tune is just another tool producers use to make bands good and bad, like u said.. sound a bit sharper and on key.. which is nice.
whats nicer is a band that sounds great with a vocalist who is amazing .. without all the production trying to lift it from the doldrums.
Bon Iver is a good example. His newest, self-titled album is fantastic. No its not dance noise like Kesha, but the lyrics, music and voice is brilliant. No production garbage necessary. Hit record, and lay down the tracks. Arcade Fire is another example of “organic”..
oh and then theres Johnny Cash, The Beatles, Elvis, Queen, Stevie Wonder, Elton John, Billy Joel, NO auto-tune. .. and some of the best songs and melodies ever written. Multi-part harmonies that are in tune because they could actually sing really, REALLy well and write REALLY good songs. Back when your talent and sound is what made you great, what made record labels take notice.. and what people enjoyed.
like I said, 80% of ‘music’ today is overrated and rather crappy compared to the 20%, and some of the great stuff from back in the day.
guest
I think everyone knows that she uses it. As for me, I like my artists to be talented without the help of auto-tune.
guest
everybody is using auto-tune now a days
what else is new ?
guest
uh. DUH.
lily / 5148 posts
I knew this already but this is part of her gimmick and part of her genre. So, this isn’t a big surprise.
guest
Does it really matter? We’re in autotone-age. So few, oh so few, real singers out there anymore.
