Tupac would’ve been 40 this week, if he hadn’t been shot at the age of 25. He’s not the only musician who died too young; in fact, some of the world’s best known musicians have passed before the age of 30.
Here are just a few of the greats who passed before their prime:
1. Buddy Holly. Today Holly is best known for the inspiration his glasses give to hipsters, but in the 1950s he was a well known rock ‘n’ roll star. Holly and two other well known young musicians all died in a tragic plane crash when Holly was just 22. Their plane crash became referred to ‘as the day the music died’ (yes, like the one referenced in the song “American Pie”).
2. Brian Jones. A founding member of The Rolling Stones, Jones was found dead in a pool at the age of 27. Originally, authoriites believed that he drowned; however, they later re-opened the case with a possible murder investigation. Regardless, the guitarist of the hit song “Paint It Black” didn’t make it to see just how big his band would get.
3. Kurt Cobain. The Nirvana front man killed himself with a shot gun at the age of 27, although some grunge rock conspiracy theorists would argue it was his girlfriend, Courtney Love, who did it.
Anyone else you would add to list?

@partofrainbow@xanga - I was going to say- what about her?! And Selena!
I think this needs to be retitled “Tupac Shakur & 3 Other Male Musicians Who Died Too Young” :/.
Besides that, it’s so tragic what happened to them & I hope they all R.I.P

I wouldn’t really place Tupac in the “great” category along with Buddy Holly, Brian Jones and Kurt Kobain….
guest
Jim Morrison, Janis Joplin, Jimmy Hendrix, etc.
guest
This is going into more of the recent rock scene but here are 3 members of pretty popular bands who have passed away…
1. Jimmy ‘The Rev’ Sullivan from Avenged Sevenfold at 28
2. Casey Calvert from Hawthorne Heights at 26
3. Bradley Nowell from Sublime at 28

@misswildflower@xanga - Why wouldn’t you?
guest
@ohforrealson@xanga - I’ve really never gotten the point of rap.
guest
what about aaliyah?!
guest
Janis Joplin, Robert Johnson, Jimi Hendrix, and all those other members of the “27 Club”
guest
@misswildflower@xanga - Well… it’s just like any other genre. They express themselves for what their lives are like, how they feel, who they know, what goes on in the places they live. I used to believe that all rap consisted of was “bitches” and “money” but a lot of it doesn’t. Many of them sing from the heart.
I’m not a huge fan of what you see on TV, since a lot of that (Lil Wayne, for example) really does scream “SHIT” to me
but there’s really great rap out there.
Sorry for going on and on. lol.
guest
@ohforrealson@xanga - I understand that and I like Eminem and a few rappers, but to me they’re not the same as Buddy Holly or Brian Jones or Kurt Kobain.
guest
@misswildflower@xanga - Eh, to each their own.

@misswildflower@xanga - I guess music just means different things to different people
For example, like another commenter said, Jimmy ‘The Rev’ Sullivan died early, and I hated the band, so it doesn’t effect me. But Nirvana used to be my absolute favorite band, and Kurt Cobains death upsets me. So I could say The Rev doesn’t deserve to be on a list like this while someone else could easily disagree!
guest
@pikaaa - I say John Lennon belongs on this list even though he was 40…
guest
definitely jimmy sullivan.

@misswildflower@xanga - Tupac was one of the most influential rappers of all time. i think he deserves a spot. just because he is a rapper doesn’t mean he isn’t worthy. that’s a pretty pathetic mindset.
guest
@misswildflower@xanga – I would put Tupac and Cobain together as one in the same. Both had real lyrics pertaining to their lives. Both wrote about some real shit. How dare you say he doesn’t belong in the “great” category. I honestly don’t know much about the Rolling Stones dude so I can’t speak and of course Buddy Holley was a pioneer but how dare you not acknowledge Tupac? You straight trippin…
guest
@swimtothemoon7@xanga - @mak3believ3@xanga - Each to their own but I’m sorry I don’t like the rap genre and I think John Lennon deserves the #1 spot no matter who else is on this list….
I appreciate not being bitched at for my opinion.
guest
@misswildflower@xanga - you can respect it even if you don’t like it.
guest
@misswildflower@xanga – And can you PLEASE spell Cobains’ last name right? That ruins your credibility….you’ve done it more than twice in different postings. And how well do you know of Buddy and the other guy from Rolling Stones to say that they are in the “great” category? I’ll bet $100 you can’t name 4 Buddy songs, but since he isn’t a rapper and is Rock N Roller, it doesn’t matter, he’s a “great” artist, right?
guest
@mak3believ3@xanga - I never said I don’t respect them. Don’t put words in my mouth. Thank you. I just think other artists belong there.
guest
@misswildflower@xanga - ha, whatevs
guest
@swimtothemoon7@xanga - Excuse me for making a typo. The Rolling Stones happen to be one of my favorite bands. My best friend and I would listen to them after school every single day. And so what if I can’t name 4 songs. It doesn’t mean anything and is invalid in this argument. Again, John Lennon would be a better fit [and the best fit] on this list in MY opinion.
guest
What about Layne Staley?! I almost cried when I saw he didn’t even make the list!!!
guest
Freddie Mercury, Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison…those three WAY WAY more important than Cobain or Tupac. Come on, dummy.
guest
Jim Morrison!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

@bloggicus_maximus@xanga - FREDDIE!!! :<

Fucking LOVE Kurt Cobain. And Courtney Love. Did you know that when Kurt died, after they removed his body, Courtney lay in his blood for days and days just singing and writing lyrics in her mind and thinking… sleeping… dreaming. How beautiful is that??

@RococoBow - That is kind of creepy really.

@RococoBow - I had a feeling Courtney was insane. This cemented it.

I wonder what 2pac would think of 2day’s crappy rap music?
sunflower / 276 posts
@bloggicus_maximus@xanga - No shit ;p Of course she is.Thats how she made it.
@Hinase@xanga - And yeahh it is a bit creepy but at the same time just a bit morbidly beautiful… or am I the only one that thinks that? O.o now I feel insane…
guest
john lennon, freddie mercury, jimi hendrix.
i do agree with buddy holly and kurt cobain though <3
guest
It’s unfortunate. But Kurt took his own life and so did Left eye. Tupac reaped what he sowed and was shot to death. I miss Aaliyah!!!!! T_T
guest
@WhenHateIsTheOnlyOption@xanga - To be honest, he might changed into using this crappy rap music, just to get some money. He wanted to leave ShugNight and that didn’t settle too well with thim. But hey, we’ll never know. I will just remember him when he was in a time when rap was actually good and meaningful.

i exist in the depths of solitude
pondering my true goal
trying to find peace of mind
and still preserve my soul
constantly yearning to be accepted
and from all receive respect
never comprising but sometimes risky
and that is my only regret
a young heart with an old soul
how can there be peace
how can i be in the depths of solitude
when there are two inside of me
this duo within me causes
the perfect opportunity
To learn and live twice as fast
as those who accept simplicity
All of the people who think Tupac doesnt deserve to be on this list because all he wrote about were “Guns, hoes, and money”. That is completely not true. He was a rapper, a song writer, and a poet. Maybe if you knew anything about Tupac, instead of spouting off shit you dont know about, you would know he was a good person with a good heart that cared about alot of things.

Ah Kurt, thanks for everything.
And Jim Morrison, too.
dahlia / 2103 posts
Janis Joplin, Syd Barrett, Layne Staley (Alice in Chains), Jimi Hendrix!!!!!! John Lennon, Bon Scott (AC/DC), Dimebag Darrell. I’m sure I could list plenty more if I sat down and thought about for awhile; a lot of musicians and artists die too young. Life fast and die young I guess.
dahlia / 2103 posts
@Demetrios_of_Phaleron@xanga - Agreeeed!! I would also add Robert Schumann and Gustav Mahler.
dahlia / 2103 posts
@RococoBow - Nah, you aren’t insane. I mean, it is messed up, but I think there is a different dark sort of beauty to some morbid stuff, especially when it involves loving someone that died way too soon. Perhaps I’m insane too…oh well
guest
Nick Drake was/is very influential on today’s musicians and died of an (accidental?) overdose at 26.
guest
i agree with your choices (esp Tupac and Kurt Cobain), and have one more to add: Jimi Hendrix, he died at age 27 – just imagine the amazing music he could have continued making had he not died so young …

@RococoBow - It’s okay. I can understand the beautiful of it..but for a normal stance..it’s pretty creepy.

Kurt Cobain???????? Seriously??
Jeff Buckley is definitely missing from this list – he was brilliant. Tupac, also, was awesome.

JIMI HENDRIX! Jim Morrison. Marc Bolan.

Oh AND last but not least Freddie Mercury. :’-(
guest
What about Marvin Gaye, he was 44, but that is still young in my eyes, and it was too soon for him to go, boohoo. I’m sad now.
guest
@needmoreink@xanga - While I agree Syd Barrett was great, he was 60 when he died – not really “before his prime”, although he lost his mind before his prime. :)
guest
Kurt didnt kill himself.
guest
You forgot Selena andFreddie Mercury.

@misswildflower@xanga - Don’t be so fucking ignorant. Who gives a fuck whether you dig rap or not? Don’t bother commenting such an arrogant comment like you did if you don’t like rap. The shit that fucking faggots like Wayne and Eminem spit out ain’t the real shit. They got fucking nothing on the king like Tupac and Biggie. See, those other 3 people, I personally don’t give a shit and don’t think they deserve the spot along with Tupac, but I don’t fucking leave such an idiotic comment, now do I? You can like rap or hate rap but don’t be fucking dissing the greatest motherfucking rapper to live on this motherfucking planet like that. That ain’t fucking cool, faggot.
guest
@iLoveYeaeunee@xanga - No. Real rap/hip-hop artist are those from the 80s such as Run DMC. They’re the REAL pioneers. And please don’t call me such horrible names. It’s not necessary and it’s against commenting policy.

@ShantsDawn@xanga - yea Selena did died tender age of 24.

I don’t know why a certain someone gets mad about not spelling Cobain’s last name it’s not like she really even knew him in real life. Yeah, he’s mainstream so most should know his last name but still, geez! Let it be.
guest
@ForeverLove_xx@xanga - There ya go!
guest
@Japanesenightpurplegeisha@xanga - Left eye died in a car accident; I don’t think that qualifies as “killing yourself”.
guest
Frankie Lymon…a drug overdose
Sam Cooke….Shot to death
Bobby Fuller…”I Fought The Law”….murdered…I don’t believe the “siuicide” story.
Robert Johnson murdered.
Hank Williams…drug overdose.
And unfortunetly there are many more.

@misswildflower@xanga - I think the reason you believe that is because his genre of music may not be your type of music. It’s just a guess from your comment.. His music really does tell a message. What he says is inspirational and keeps me positive. He was and is still one of the greatest emcees to have ever come out in the music industry. And the reason why Tupac is mentioned first is because it would’ve been his 40th birthday, as mentioned in the first sentence, if you didn’t read it.
@alayshaj@xanga - THANK YOU!
