New research shows that watching something dumb might actually make you dumber. According to The Body Odd, it’s called media priming; “the idea that the things we watch or listen to or read influence our emotions and our behavior, perhaps more than we realize.”
In the experiment, volunteers were given different versions of a screenplay to read, followed by a multiple choice general knowledge test. The group that read the screenplay referring to the main character as a “stupidly acting soccer hooligan” performed worse on the test than the group that read the screenplay making no mention of the character’s intellectual abilities.
Basically, anything we see has an effect on our following actions because it’s at the top of our mind. Because our brain is predisposed in that direction, we’re more likely to act in that way. Therefore, watching the idiots on Jersey Shore might make you act like more of an idiot.
Personally, I always feel like hitting the gym after watching The Biggest Loser. But I also watch a lot of Castle and Bones, and not once have I had the serious urge to murder someone.
Have you noticed this to be true? Do you get the urge to “GTL” after watching Jersey Shore?

Firstly, what the heck does GTL mean?
Secondly, I thought this was common knowledge. None of the people I know who watch Jersey Shore are… well… rocket scientists. Mostly dumb girls who focus on anything shallow. So for the most part, its fan base is lacking in I.Q. points, and though I’m sure I’ll piss somebody off with this comment, oh well. It is what it is.

I know I’m not dumb and I watch that show.

Haha, I knew this x) Every time I watch one of those shows like Jersey Shore or Keeping Up With the Kardashians, I almost feel like I can sense that I’m getting dumber and my brain cells are diminishing every second and I have to switch it off before it’s too late -.-

fuck this entry. i’m extremely intelligent, and jersey shore is my favorite show.

I think this entry is just stupid. I watch Jersey Shore because I think it’s ridiculously amusing. Not everyone who watches that show is an idiot, and just because someone watches it doesn’t mean it’s going to make them less intelligent.
guest
It’s not watching the actual show that would make anyone less intelligent, it’s whether or not whoever is watching the show has the capability of deciphering what’s logical everyday behavior and what’s glamorized for an extended view count. I personally enjoy this show a lot. Yeah it is ridiculous, but it’s highly entertaining and, dare I say it, I even look forward to seeing it. Watching this show or anything else related to it doesn’t take a hit on my intelligence level. If anything, it makes me even more aware of what is classified as stupid.

This show isn’t even interesting.

@ohforrealson@xanga - I’m a fan and I bet I have a higher IQ than yours. And a bigger penis.

@ShimmerBodyCream@xanga - I wouldn’t argue about the penis. Do you have to wrap it around your leg so you can walk comfortably?

I think this is a repost, but this “study” is a joke. I don’t care, I didn’t go to the best university in my country so I could spend my days off watching Discovery channel! Fuck that shit =P *goes back to JS marathon*

@ohforrealson@xanga - I’m a human genetics scientist and I watch JS. Does that count? It’s harder than “rocket science”, trust me.

Bones and Castle aren’t about the murders themselves, though… A better example would have been Dexter. Good job.
No, I don’t watch that show. I know for sure that the people I look up to, the ones who make better grades than me, who are better leaders and managers than me, don’t watch that show. Thus, I don’t either. It doesn’t matter whether or not it will make me dumber. It’s the fact that it looks like a dumb show because it showcases people who are acting dumb, that turns me off to the whole premise of it.

@ohforrealson@xanga - haha no problem
