I’ve done yoga before, but never like this. Over the weekend, my friend took me to her “hot yoga” class. Bikram yoga, as it is professionally called, is essentially doing yoga in a room that reaches 100 degrees. And yes, it was as disgusting and as hard as it sounds.
I recently just lost 15 pounds, so I’m really into exercising and trying new and interesting ways to change up my routine.
I have always heard about Bikram yoga, but always shied away from the aspect of sweating more than you normally would on the elliptical. But when you think about it, when you sweat, you’re ridding your body of impurities and toxins. With this in mind, I dove head first into the class.
5 minutes in: I was a faucet. In between taking breaks to towel off my face (which happened a lot), I looked around the room. The yoga masters in the front row were barely dripping, but the shirtless 50 year old man behind me was drowning in a pool he had made on his mat.
I don’t want it to sound like I am opposed to Bikram, because I actually really enjoyed it. After the 50 minutes were over and we stepped outside, I began to feel more relaxed than I had ever felt. Yes, my arms were sore (a lot of the poses we did entailed holding our arms out for long periods of time), but in a good way!
This type of yoga was created to help increase the circulation of all organs in the body and claims to prevent heart disease and other organ diseases. It also helps with injury prevention, stress, oxygen intake and blood circulation. Lady Gaga even does it, in heels none the less (see photo, above)!
Lets recap: you sweat out impurities, you’re working muscles that you never knew you had, you’re relaxed and you burn a ton of calories (500-1500 depending on the person). I highly recommend trying a class (only if you’re more of an advanced yogi) and you’ll see what I mean.
Would you take this class?

I love hot yoga! The first time I went I had to leave halfway through because I was so hot but it’s totally worth going!

I always thought about trying hot yoga too! Your experience sounds pretty cool! Did it ever get too hot for you or anyone else in the class?

Yoga itself is really hard. x__x I think I better get used to that first. I do want to try one day though.

Yes, I am interested in trying this.

I love Bikram. I think the second class is actually a lot harder than the first but it gets so much easier from there. I run and strength train pretty regularly but the best workout I do is 90 minutes of Bikram.

Lol i have just started doing Bikram too! I went to my second class yesterday. Lemme tel you the first time was hell. I was so nauseous and light-headed from the heat. It’s not even that the workout is intense, it’s just the heat!! My second time was better but I still got light-headed. I’m torn because I feel like I’m not getting as good of a workout because my light-headededness is hindering my abilities, but it’s such a challenge that I want to keep trying until I’m used to it. I got a Groupon for 20 classes for 20 bucks so I’m using them this summer to challenge myself. Now I relish regular yoga because I don’t feel like dying compared to Bikram, it’s ridiculous because I feel more tired from regular yoga, but the next day after Bikram I feel totally fine. Really it’s just the heat that is still deadly to me.
You don’t need to be experienced to try Bikram. I’m totally a beginner in yoga and I went and it was fine, like I said it’s just the heat. The poses aren’t that difficult in Bikram and the scary looking ones you can just do the minimum (like I do, because I’m not that flexible). I honestly think the poses are less difficult in Bikram than a regular Hatha or Vinyasa class.

If your session was 50 minutes long, then it was hot yoga, but not Bikram yoga. Bikram yoga is a trademarked type of hot yoga that has the exact same 26 poses done in the same order every single time by every single instructor that claims he/she teaches Bikram yoga. Bikram yoga lasts about 90 minutes.
I love hot yoga!
I always somehow injure myself in other types of yoga cause there’s not enough warm up for me :/

Yoga looks easy and elegant, but it’s really hard to do right. I’m doing basic cardio + conditioning workouts right now. I’m going to try a zumba class when I go back to campus in the fall – we get free classes (just found out) – excited!

I got a great deal on 1 month of Bikram yoga and ended up going about 6 times. I felt like I was going to die the first time, but after that I really enjoyed it!

I love bikram yoga, I try to do it multiple times a week. Are you sure what you did was bikram? Because bikram has 26 poses and always lasts 90 minutes.
