You’ve planned it all out perfectly: attend the school of your dreams, major in the one field that you know is right for you, and then graduate with that well-paying job that will be waiting for you on graduation day. It’s your future, 2.0, and you’re determined to make it happen.
Then you find yourself three years into school, a seasoned student, majoring in a field that yup–you guessed it–won’t pay the bills. You’ve heard Sallie Mae horror stories, and you don’t want to end up one of those college graduates ducking and dodging the student loan collectors once that grace period is up. So, while you still have a chance, it’s time to revise that plan of yours. If there’s anything you’ll learn in college, it’s how to be practical, and let’s be real–you’ll practically kill yourself if you have to move back in with your parents after graduation.
Lucky for you, it isn’t too late to switch to a field that you know will have a job waiting for you with a decent salary once you graduate. (Note: I’m talking to those of you still in undergrad. For all you recent grads, well, I feel you.) These select fields are always hiring, welcoming all you proactive undergrads who are eager to do almost anything (yes, even switching majors at the last minute!) for a paycheck that’ll keep you off of mom’s couch after graduation. Here’s a list of 6 fields (and their average salaries) for you to consider when the near-graduation jitters begin.
Take it from me, this post-grad-still-living-at-home-with-mom knows just what she’s talking about. Happy (job) hunting!
1. Engineer- $66,000: Whether you choose to focus on computers, environment, systems or mechanics, you’ll be happy to know that all engineer positions are well-paying (and therefore, well worth the extra year of studying!) Plus, considering how quickly things are advancing right now, there’s always opportunity for engineers.

Ha, for those that read the link, biochemistry is not just biology and chemistry together. It’s like life chemistry. The chemistry of the body. The chemicals within your body and how they react with each other and your organs. Its not a double major which is what that site makes it sound when they say “two sciences smashed together”
guest
4/6 were majors that focused on money so basically, majors that focus on money already… will make you money. -_-

I’m an engineer, and I settled for a modest training starting salary of 43000 or so. Yeah, it’s hard, but it really is so worth it.

For now, I plan on starting college with the intent of majoring in computer science. What’s funny is that I want to try and (hopefully) get a portfolio together and switch to major in art, like graphic design or something.
Big difference, huh .-.

switching from engineering to international relations was obviously the right thing to do.

I originally was an education major but took a marketing class and loved it. So I changed my major to marketing and I’m so much happier.
Plus in Pennsylvania there are so many education budget cuts and teachers are getting laid off at a ridiculous rate.

Most of my friends are in accounting. I feel like such an outsider with my almost English degree.

My boyfriend is in engineering and I’m in accounting. Perfect

only if you can get a job in your field.

Yeah, I’m gonna start off extremely poor… thank you, Industrial Design, for being so unknown around the world, but my biggest passion

Forgot “
Computer Science” – that’s where the future’s at!Of course, med school, pharm, dentist is a given!

Right now I work in cyber security and have a degree in Computer Engineering. Those who go into certain jobs for cyber security start off making 90k a year.

i’m a Communications major and honestly there’s so much that I can do with that degree it’s not even funny. but at the same time you shouldn’t do into a major just because it’s the highest paying major according to the stats. yes, money is important. but at the same time is it really worth your happiness? would you want to wake up every morning at this absolutely shitty job because it makes $70,000? the answer for some people would be yes and that’s fine if that’s for you. but i know myself better than that and i didn’t pick this major for the money. some of the most rewarding majors such as social work is one of the most underappreciated majors – in reality they make shit – but they do so much. people that go into that major are damn sure not there for the money because if they are then they are going to get a rude awakening. you should follow your heart because i know that that’s what i’m doing .

@Love_never_fails - yeah you’re absolutely right if they pass the bill to raise tuition 33% then i’m royally fucked and so is about 99% of Pennsylvania’s State School students .

I’m majoring in engineering and currently interning in finance. Go figure, but either way I’m making bank

@turnyalightsdownlow@xanga - I got my first two years of school at community college so I currently have no student loan debt since we just did a payment plan for my tuition. But I am transferring to a state school in the fall so I definately need to get a jump on my loans.
And the two biggest districts in my area laid off about 300 teachers between the 2 of them. My high school is like the only one in the area to not lay off teachers or raise any taxes and still managed to finalize their budget.

Nursing. My friend makes $100,000 (after getting masters)

I majored in computer science and I had a good job before I even graduated. It’s a good career imo.
guest
Woo hoo for engineering!
guest
Just because these majors will make good money doesn’t necessarily mean they would be easy to find in today’s job market. The most common job openings in my state are the engineer jobs more so than others.
I switched majors a lot in college because I was dumb enough to listen to some family members to tell me what major would be perfect for me. I went from being graphic design major, computer science major and back to graphic design major. Until 2 years ago, I decided to change my major for the last time to Criminal Justice and that was the best decision I ever made in my life!
Then, I decided to transfer and get my bachelors in Criminal Justice and I am very excited to start classes in the fall! My mom doesn’t like the idea of me being a Criminal Justice student, but she knows I am happy and that’s all it matters.

I agree with “cowgirl” in the comment section of that site.

I didn’t even have a major. fun times.

the worst part about this list is that i don’t fall under any of these categories. i suck at math and i definitely suck at business. i can’t sell a product to save my life. science just sucks.
guest
If I didn’t pass this semester, I’m not going through with my business major and instead will be switching to pastry school. It’s something I actually have a passion for, and it isn’t boring. =)

@turnyalightsdownlow@xanga - My dad has a communications degree and he’s been out of work for 3 years. His unemployment ran out yesterday.

I think it all depends on your interests when choosing majors, though the return from the job is, of course, needa be taken into consideration. i wanna be study medical coz it seems professional and can make quite a lot money, and most importantly, i’m interested in it. that’s why i’m now studying biology:)
guest
The only math I can do is basic math. I graduated with History and Politics BA. I don’t want to be a teacher… Mum! Dad! Take me back!
guest
What about nursing? Entry-level nurse starts at over $50,000 per year.
guest
@ShirleyD@xanga - Viscious cycle, isn’t it?
guest
If you want to make money, don’t major in anything to do with music or art! I speak from experience. But money has never been as important to me as doing what I love, although being a grownup has taught me that sometimes you have to compromise in order to survive financially.
guest
I’m a Translation major, and once I graduate I’ll be starting at around 60-70K a year if I work for the government. Other sectors will pay in the 6-figures for translators. Not ALL arts degrees are useless
daisy / 505 posts
I agree with the person that said, “well if youre bad at math you’re basically fucked, then.” Oh well. If I’m a teacher at least it’s possible to find a job, even if you don’t get paid much. I don’t live a luxurious life at all anyway, so I’m not too concerned. I think the worst thing to major in is psychology because it’s the most popular major in the country and something like 3% of people get accepted into grad programs to become psychologists…it’s easier to get into med school and be a psychiatrist.
daisy / 505 posts
ALSO, I know people who just graduated college in mechanical engineering who can’t find jobs, just like everyone else. Basically, the job market sucks for everyone right now. My dad is an engineer and he’s been laid off and taken back, and his entire company is shutting down now…
One more thing…since when did Xanga start outsourcing its posts? HAHA…sucks. Poor Xang-Xangz, dying a slow and painful death like my dad’s company.
guest
That was a really poor list, methinks
guest
@hollowhopes@xanga - Where’d you hear that it’s easier to get into med school than into a psychology graduate program?
sunflower / 413 posts
@hollowhopes@xanga - Actually business majors are the most popular major in the U.S., not psychology.
And on a side not, being a business major does not mean you have to be good at math. Accounting isn’t even that hard because it involves mostly simply computations. I’m not an accounting major but I did have to take accounting classes for my major. I don’t know if more advanced accounting classes are harder but I found it fairly simple.
guest
Accounting major here. and unlike many majors, I love accounting and I’m not just in it for the money and stability.
guest
I’m majoring in farming and minoring in becoming a cowgirl. The pay isn’t great but who doesn’t love wearing cowboy boots and riding horses on a ranch all day?
guest
I would advise people to research the job market they plan to enter before making a decision. Especially if you are set on living in a particular area.
@Love_never_fails - I have a master’s degree in accounting. The actual mathematics of accounting isn’t difficult at all, the most difficult things you actually get into regularly is a bit of statistics. Knowing what calculations to do and when to do them that makes accounting challenging.
guest
@TheDarkAndMisleadSoul@xanga - I actually started as a graphic design major and have switched to computer science. But I’m definitely not ruling out all graphic design (i’ll probably minor in it).
guest
@starxsplash@xanga - Haha, me too! I definitely don’t want to do without art completely, so I figured I’d major in one and minor in the other — or vice versa :p
daisy / 505 posts
@Love_never_fails - Oh, must’ve gotten it confused with being the most popular major at my university or something. I failed math 3 out of 4 times in high school so I doubt I could do accounting but that’s great for everyone else.
@ohforrealson@xanga - My Abnormal Psychology teacher this past semester gave us those statistics in class a few times. She was really trying to make sure we didn’t get our hopes up.
guest
So basically if, like me, you hate maths and science, you’re screwed. -_-
@aznbabygrl_kathy@xanga - haha, yeah, exactly.
guest
Seems like I´m on the right path, I love Biochemistry.
guest
those all sound really boring to me. so basically, the more my job sucks, the more money i can make. ain’t that a bitch..
guest
@sassypenguin@xanga - Exactly, it’s not. I graduated with a degree in Biochemistry and was able to get tons of jobs and that paid highly well. But, I am going to medical school so…
I agree, people shouldn’t get degrees that are considered just easy and enjoyable, but easy, enjoyable and makes MONEY, economic recession proof too,
guest
@Japanesenightpurplegeisha@xanga - That was my original plan! To go to medical school. But I’m not sure I’ll be able to get in. What was your gpa? Which medical school are you going too? I only have a 3.7 and I’m afraid that isn’t enough to get into medical school. Did you get a job then go back to medical school after a year or so of work?
guest
@Japanesenightpurplegeisha@xanga - I’m interested in hearing about med school too lol, so basically I’ll echo what @sassypenguin@xanga asked!
guest
So basically, you can only make money if you’re smart. There’s noway I would bea - ble to wrap my mind around any of those subjects.
@turnyalightsdownlow@xanga- you’re so right about the communication major. It branches off into so many things its ridiculous. I plan to get my degree in Journalism and communications, then go into publishing and/or editing. Also, I could not see myself sitting somewhere where I am bored out of my mind making 78,000. Its not healthy for you.

Those numbers seem low and that list is pretty different from others I’ve seen.

It’s also to point out these are the national averages. For a better sense of how much you’ll make, you should look up the average salary for your state.
I believe there are quite a few other ones that do earn you money. According to the government have a bright outlook (meaning in the next 5 years, they have a high growth rate in job demand) and will make me happier than having a job in math and science. These are the national averages for my state of some of the career choices I had prior to deciding my major and the major I chose:
1.) Paralegal (where I’m starting) – $58, 900
2.) Graphic Design – $51, 600
3.) Speech-Language Pathology – $69, 300
4.) Family Lawyer (my dream job, which I plan to pursue) – $136, 900
TL; DR? I’m pretty sure you don’t need to be a wiz at math and science to get a good job with a good salary, seeing that there are plenty of other types jobs with high job outlooks

@Wait_by_Moonlight@xanga - Which engineering if you mind me asking?
Hey wait a minute, where’s Biomedical engineering? As for the other engineering majors (they suck!) just joking
PS. I can’t read the rest of the list on here….

@hollowhopes@xanga - that’s cause mechanical engineering sucks =]

WELL THEN. This is depressing.
I’m going into college with an undeclared major.. I really don’t want to make a decision on what to do for the rest of my life at 17.
I’m scared.
guest
@Day923@xanga - Don’t be. You can be undeclared for a year and a half, then you’ll be fine. Do a lot of research and see if your college has a career development class. I’m going into my second year of college and I’m still undeclared.

I am a biology major.

ah none of those are my major.

I’m an English major, and I’m doing because I absolutely am in love with it. I think this article is bullshit. While you have to factor in money/jobs/life after college into your major, I think it’s fucking ridiculous to major in something you have no passion in. I think it’s too black-and-white to think about college this way, there has to be some sort of compromise between love and money.
