With summer comes strapless dresses, t-shirts, halter tops and this season’s number one trend: the maxi dress. Yet, there is nothing more annoying than wanting to wear the skin-bearing fashions of the season and realizing you don’t have the proper bra to wear with it. Well, my beauties, I have searched high and low, and tried various bras on to narrow down my top list for you!
Here are the top 5 bras to invest in this summer that will keep you from asking the infamous question: what kind of bra do I wear with this?
Ck One Convertible Micro T-Shirt Bra
1. The White T-Shirt Bra.
Why put the emphasis on “white,” you ask? Because there is nothing worst than seeing a girl walking in the city with a pink, blue or even harsh black bra peering through a crisp white tee. Plus, you can usually wear your “white t-shirt” bra with any other colored shirt.
If you haven’t been told by now, your t-shirt bra should be nude, with a smooth satin or cotton based texture. Let me make this clear: nude means the closest shade to your complexion. Calvin Klein has a great T-shirt bra (above) for your everyday wear. If you are looking for a variety of colors, try your local department stores, as they will be sure to have your perfect “nude’ shade.
Remember to stay away from embroidery, lace and bras with embellishments; they will show through. Also be aware of bras with accents on the straps, they can poke out around the shoulders and make an outfit look cheesy.
2. The 7 Way Strapless Bra.
This staple will allow you to wear your racer-back tops, halters and even tube tops and dresses. While most women only opt to buy a strapless bra for these purposes, I believe it is worth it to invest in a multi-way strapless bra instead. This will cost a bit more, but it will also allow you the convenience to wear different summer styles without buying a different bra for each look. This bra will be your go-to essential for your maxi dresses.
Try the Pink 7 Way Wireless Bandeau Bra (pictured above) for only $25 and choose from a variety of fun colors for the season. If you’re looking for more support, Express has a great 7 Way Strapless that has under wire and padded demi cups for a perfect fit.
3. The U-Plunge Bra.
A more recent creation, the U-plunge bra comes in handy when you are looking to wear low-cut or deep plunging necklines for summer. Again, it would be best to buy this bra in a color closest to your skin tone. This way you can alternate it with different colors in your wardrobe. Victoria Secrets has a great Push Up U- Plunge that adds a bit of sexiness to this staple and for only $42. If that is out of your price range, try the Fashion Forms U- Plunge Bra sold at Bloomingdale’s for only $24.
Fashion Forms Infinity Backless Strapless Bra
4. The Backless Bra.
Seemingly similar to the strapless bra; However, I believe the backless bra is worth the investment. This is a tough one though because most backless bras only attach with adhesives, which can turn out to be a one time use only. Yet, there are times when you just have to use a backless bra and there is no getting around it.
The Fashion Forms Infinity Bra (pictured above) is a great choice for this season and can be found in nude and black at Bloomingdale’s for only $36. There is also a newer rendition of the backless bra that I tried on and did end up liking. The Fashion Forms Nu Bra Ultralite Backless Bra actually works well and you do get a good couple of uses out of it. I haven’t reached the 50 usage mark, but if I do I will definitely keep you posted!
5. The Classic Push Up Bra.
Well, well, well! If there was ever a perfect time for a little va-va-voom, it is summer. Sometimes a girl just needs a little “pick-me-up”, and who better to help with this challenge than the famous push up bra? Invest in a good one that doesn’t allow nipple “opportunity”.
Make sure your bra has a sturdy under wire and do your best to stick with gel padding, since foam can easily lose its shape after one wash. And don’t fret over pricing; you can find reasonable push-up bras everywhere from Victoria’s Secret to Target to Topshop.

NONE of those come in my size. #fail

Aside from the last one…I don’t think they come in my size nor give too much support. My regular bra does good ;P

I have the 7 way strapless bra and I love it. I bought it in the bright pink version, but I wish they’d had it in a nude color… for the price I paid, I would’ve bought both.

HA! I think I’m down to one normal bra and one sports bra. And that’s for all the seasons.

cute cute cute! ^.^

Great tips. I agree with them. Your bra can totally make or break your outfit. I should do one for people with DD and above cups. Those backless bras don’t come above a D cup (I think they are the same brand I used to use when my breasts were normal sized). Then again, I doubt I would wear anything backless because once you are above a certain size, people make all kinds of assumptions about you if you wear strapless, backless, remotely low cut clothing. Wear it when you have your child with you and you might as well be wearing a scarlet letter A.

Under white you should wear a nude color. It’s less noticeable than white. FYI

What about a sports bra for those who exercise??

Bras are a mystery to me.

@Erika_Steele@xanga - That would be great, seriously. I’m a 34DD and it’s really hard to find nice-looking bras. Even in department stores. It sucks.
lily / 5148 posts
@roxybabe1623@xanga - I don’t know. I use white under white and it works just as fine.
guest
@eomona@xanga - I have to get mine on-line. If I want to go to a store, I’d have to drive 45 minutes to Birmingham.
guest
i’m a size 34DD , and i’ve found all of my bras at Frederick’s of Hollywood.
even good strapless ones.
guest
@Shinbi_Belldandy@xanga - i was going to say that too, but i think you need them all year ’round.
guest
I’m a 36F and I have yet to find a bra that actually fit me well and supported me that I liked.
Also, I can’t afford to pay $90 for a bra.
Someone should do a post on bras for bigger boobed ladies that have been tested and approved so I can buy a good bra! Lol
guest
I can’t stand to wear any bra other than sports bras.
Those things are all so damned uncomfortable, and I always feel like my tits are about to pop out of ‘em!
Hahaha, and I’ve tried a bajillion different sizes and styles, but nothing is comfortable other than a sports bra.
I really should have been born a guy, hahaha.

@roxybabe1623@xanga - that’s what OP said…

I hate when women wear black bras under white tops, why was that “the” thing to do? I also don’t like push-up bras. I also don’t like any bra that is padded, so irritating, I’m weird like that lol.
guest
i wear any color bra underneath my white tee… its hawt.
guest
lol, am I not suppose to have these bras in the winter?
guest
I have one bra. ONE. Because a 30D is fucking impossible to find.

@raspbxrrryjam@xanga - Have you tried a 32 C?
sunflower / 389 posts
Ah, I score 3/5. My necessities have always been the following styles, each in one nude and one black: T-shirt demi, strapless/multiway push-up, and classic push-up. I’ve never bothered with low back or super low cut styles though, so I never needed much else.
guest
@vixen_with_a_cause@xanga - they SAY you’re supposed to be able to do that with bra sizes… but it’s all lies. The cups on a 32C are too narrow and have massive boobage spilling over the inner and outter edges.
A 32 D is closer to fitting than a 32C in the cups… but then the band is too loose.
guest
Yeah I’ve tried those “backless” bras that cling to you with nothing but “fashion tape” They don’t tend to work unless you have as bout as much boob as a preteen. My “main” bra right now is a nursing bra, and 2 nursing tanks I alternate between. Having always been overly endowed since I hit puberty, most bras don’t fit, “lift and seperate” or hold my assets very well.

@roxybabe1623@xanga - I think the post meant emphasis on white for a white T-shirt, as in a T-shirt bra that will not be obvious under a white T-shirt. But the tip indicates that a nude-colored T-shirt bra is best. I thought it meant a white bra also and was a little confused myself.

yes yes and yes.

@Hinase@xanga - I have this problem too.
The most I can handle is one removable strap for one shoulder shirts. Everything else falls down.

I hate backless and “U” shaped bras..they looks so uncomfortable. lol
guest
The 7 way bras are amazing!
I would never need a U-Plunge bra. I never wear anything that low cut. I’m not comfortable with that much cleavage. I already have DDs. That’s good enough.
What is the point of a backless bra? I don’t get it AT ALL. It provides no support…
Also, what the crap is a maxi dress?
guest
I really dont’ care about this. It’s just another stupid thing that prissy girls not like me do. Spend money on a thousand bras.

@omgroxie@xanga - Sports bra: The Enell sports bra. Kind of expensive, but it lasts forever. http://www.enell.com
http://www.figleaves.com sells bras is a TON of extended sizes. They vary on price. I used to be a 38 E, and I got a bra there for about $25. It lasted a while, too.
guest
@Btrfly_Wngs@xanga - Thanks! I’ve never heard of either of those. I’ll take a look!
But really? A sports bra? Aren’t my boobs too big for that?
guest
@Cosmar@xanga - I wish I could wear sports bras. But my boobs are too big and it forms that dreaded uniboob =|
guest
Okay, okay… ONLY $42!? For a BRA? ARE YOU KIDDING ME?
I NEVER pay more than $7 for a bra, ever. I buy my bras at freaking Conway. That is the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard. Victoria’s Secret is overrated and overpriced. I will only splurge on their CLEARANCE or EXTREMELY GOOD SALE underwear, if I happen to be in need and find something in my size. But NEVER a freaking BRA for $42. Wtf. Really. THAT COULD BUY ME LUNCH FOR A WEEK.
All of this is ridiculous. Who cares if your bra straps show? Just tuck them in. Or buy a bra with detachable straps. Half of the ones I own are convertible strapless bras, and they fit me well and last me YEARS. You really, REALLY do not need any of that fancy shit. You can find something much cheaper if you take the time to look.

I hate nude bras, I don’t care how practical they are, I want a bra I actually like.

@omgroxie@xanga - I don’t know what you mean. I work out a lot, and I was having to wear 2 sports bras and it still wasn’t doing it for me. That bra has really good support for when you’re working out without smashing your boobs down.
guest
@Btrfly_Wngs@xanga - Generally sport bras don’t support as well as regular bras, so I didn’t think I could even wear them because of how big my boobs are.
guest
@raspbxrrryjam@xanga - YUP. I am a 30E and it really sucks. Even a 32DD is pretty impossible to find, and I don’t want to spend money on a bra that isn’t really the right size. Contrary to what the sales people at some chain stores say, the sizes are NOT interchangeable — I agree with you. I really do need the 30 band size to keep from spilling out over the sides. I always end up having to buy european bras from small boutiques. So expensive!
I would be really interested in a similar post for ladies with larger chests, especially those with small band sizes. Any good websites or brands? Are there really any bra options that work well for backless/strapless outfits for the larger chests?

Hi! I read through the replies and I am already working on a follow up piece for girls with a little more up top!
Stay tuned. @mylittleunderground@xanga -

@omgroxie@xanga - Ah ha. Usually, I’d agree. That bra is freaking amazing though. It supports really well. I used to hate sports bras because they’re either smash everything and hurt, or I’d still be bouncing around, and it still hurt. That one was like Heaven when I was an E cup.
Plus it’s breathable.

@omgroxie@xanga - Try http://www.bravissimo.com/ It’s a UK-based website, but they ship worldwide (I’m in Canada). They ONLY carry bras that are D or bigger. I find I have to adjust the band size up one (I’m a 34 in Canada/US sizes, but 36 from this website), and keep the cup size the same and everything fits SO well, including a few sports bras that actually have enough support!! Also lasenza.co.uk. I find this site cheaper than lasenza.com (even with the shipping and exchange rate) and they actually carry my size in a lot of styles, which La Senza here stopped doing a while ago. Totally worth the cost of shipping back and forth the first time I did it, because now I know what size to buy from there, and the bras are great!
And it finally solved the problem of not having ANY stores to buy bras from that weren’t $100+ each!
