Last week we asked you for your thoughts on Rihanna’s new “Man Down” video where she kills her rapist.
A fan of Gabrielle Union’s also asked her the same question. The answer wasn’t what you’d expect.
Raped when she was 19, Union Tweeted that her attacker was a “stranger who robbed the store I worked at. He put his gun dwn durin the rape &asked me 2 [hand] it 2 him.”
I can only assume that if this were to happen to me, I would want the worst for this person, maybe even an ending like in Rihanna’s video.
But not Union. Here’s her responses to the video, via Twitter:
Saw ‘Man Down’ by @rihanna. Every victim/survivor of rape is unique, including how they THINK they’d like justice 2 be handed out
During my rape I tried 2 shoot my rapist, bt I missed. Over the yrs I realized tht killin my rapist would’ve added insult 2 injury. The DESIRE 2 kill someone whose abused/raped u is understandable, bt unless its self defense n the moment 2 save ur life, just ADDS 2 ur troubles #mandown.
#Mandown video did a GREAT job of getting the ENTIRE world TALKING abt RAPE. I hope tht it leads 2 HEALING &PREVENTS RAPE
While not everyone agrees that Rihanna’s video is appropriate, I think Union’s response is extremely mature and honest, something we need when talking about a topic like rape.
What do you think about Union’s response to “Man Down”?

I was a victim of rape and I’ll have to agree with Union. Although I’d
love nothing more than to murder the man who raped me in the most
horrendous way imaginable, that would make me the same as him. I, as a
human being, don’t have the right to take something that solely belongs
to an individual away.

It’s a terrible thing…but killing someone for what they’ve done is not right. Soon the law will catch up to them, Of not, it is their soul to pay when they face the Lord. No evil deed goes unpunished.

I wouldn’t kill the man who raped me. There have been times that I was so angry that I would have. But now that I’ve, in a sense, finished mourning and my head is less clouded with hurt, guilt and anger, if given the opportunity I wouldn’t do anything. Maybe I’m just weak and I’d rather let him get away with it than try to achieve justice. But in the end, I’ve learned to be happy again and to live again and most days now I don’t even think about it. I refuse to give him the power to be in my thoughts and dreams anymore. Killing him wouldn’t right a wrong, it wouldn’t undo anything. It would just be another trauma to plague my mind and it’d be another reason to remember him. Fuck that.

I think Gabrielle Union’s response is very profound and mature. 2 wrongs certainly don’t make a right.

@quasarglow@xanga - All of the comments to this post are great, yours included. I don’t know how you could consider yourself weak…I think you’re the complete opposite of weak!! By learning to be happy and live again, I think you’re probably stronger than you’ll ever know. And, that was probably the best revenge to the person who did a horrific thing to you.

I cant handle people who type in ‘text’ talk

@itwaswritteninblood@xanga - doesn’t skipping a comma count as text talk?
I kid, sort of. I don’t see what the big deal is though- twitter has character limits as everyone knows, so if you have a longer message like this that you want to put out, spelling it the right way would take 3x as long and would be harder for other people to pick up on (because of how re-tweets work)

@itwaswritteninblood@xanga - me too! is it really that much harder to write or type “yo” in front of a “u”? or “too” instead of “2″…but, since she was on twitter, i guess she was trying to condense her thoughts into 160 characters or less!

@saraspeaks@xanga - Don’t use twitter then.
I really hate twitter actually. I don’t understand this 160 characters or less.
@ScarletMoth@xanga - I hate twitter and its character limit, it just seems rediculous to me, and skipping a comma is not like ‘text’ talk, its just bad grammar.

Blech. I can’t even read that. English, girl, English.
@ScarletMoth@xanga - By the way, a comma is not the same thing as an apostrophe. :p
On subject, I can totally understand how a victim would feel. When my house was robbed, I had the desire to kill whoever stole all my stuff, but I would never actually do it.

@KickDrumHeart@datingish - ha! wow. I don’t know why I did that.

@ohveryoung@xanga - Same. .___.;

Why does everyone keep saying/acting as though Rihanna is saying “murder everyone that has ever hurt you” ? She obviously doesn’t believe that, first of all, because CB is still alive lol But I think she is just showing how SOME ppl react to being attacked/abused; not that it is necessarily right. I like the video.

i would agree with both gabrielle and rihanna… sure two wrongs don’t make it right but if i killed the rapist i’m saving how many lives from getting ruined by killing the rapist.. that’s how i look at it… you can’t really reform a rapist… they cannot be rehabilitated for shit..

I’m just trying to figure out why she types like that…

@MissLady2012 - LOL at the Chris Brown reference. Totally agree.

@WithLoveFromD@xanga - Very true

It was a mature response. But I would have no problem killing someone who was raping me. I doubt I would even feel guilty about it afterwards. Not only would I be protecting myself, I would be preventing the future rapes of other women.

I wouldn’t kill anyone who was trying to rape me unless they were trying to kill me. I don’t think anyone realises how final murder is. Who are you to take away someone’s family member, friend and what not?
guest
People say they would or wouldn’t kill if someone rape them but in all honesty, I wouldn’t really know what to do if I was in that predicument. I say I wouldn’t kill someone but, when if I did? You can’t fool yourself and people are capable of doing anything when they are under such horrible situations such as this I just pray I am never in that predicument.

Gabrielle Union has terrible grammar. That’s really all I got from this post.

This subject of this post could open up a lot of great discussion and people just seem to be commenting on the grammar. *don’t want to be a part of society anymore*
