With lyrics like:
I didn’t mean to end his life
I know it wasn’t right
and
And I took his heart when
I pulled up that gun
we shouldn’t be too surprised the video for Rihanna‘s latest single “Man Down,” isn’t filled with puppies, unicorns and rainbows.
The Huffington Post posted the video earlier this afternoon, saying: “Years after her disgusting beating at the hands of ex-boyfriend Chris Brown, the Barbadian popstar released her newest music video on Tuesday, for the violent single “Man Down.” The video gives quite a literal interpretation of the lyrics, featuring her, while living on a Caribbean island, getting abused by a boyfriend — and then taking the ultimate revenge.”
Check it out:
What do you think about the video? Is it too violent? Is it her artistic response to how she saw her relationship with Brown ending?

I don’t think its too violent.
guest
i love it.

it’s not new artistic area, especially in music: bob marley, rancid, aerosmith, Dixie Chicks just off the top of my head have songs with similar narratives and I am sure there are millions more. There is nothing too violent especially once you consider the violence not shown in the music video. I hope this isn’t one of those non issue issues, and I’m not sure how she could of conveyed this content with out depicting some violence… for some truly unsettling material look up a british PSA featuring Kiera Knightley against domestic abuse. It’s a vile, violent and disgusting thing, really not sure how someone honestly depicts that with out honestly depicting vile, and violent behavior

What’s wrong with killing the bastard? This is no different than the controversy about Lady Gaga’s Paparazzi. Get over itttt.
guest
It might be in response to Brown’s beating, then again, it might not. I think it would be reasonable to kill someone who was raping you, or who was beating you into a pulp, if it’s a self-defense thing and not revenge.

wow…

i love that you can really hear her accent in this song i absolutely adore it :]
guest
@WHOAlizz@xanga - Agreed.
guest
I get how this is may* be an artistic response to Brown’s beating
But havent she wrote enough songs about it already? (not trying to be insensitive)
I feel like the viewers (esp younger audience) could interpret the msg of the video in the wrong way
that violence is the way to seek revenge.
Although I do like the music video ( some people may take the video too literal )
@WaitingToShrug@xanga - agree with you

I think is one of the better songs/videos she’s put out lately.

@phuck_diz_shiz@xanga - Or that revenge should be done at all.

i totally love the reggae feel this song has. and her accent is cute- i really like it. i don’t think this is very violent.

Finally the REAL reggae comes out of Rihanna! I <3 this video & song!

when i first watched the beginning of this, like when the music actually starts, it kind of reminded me of the old rihanna. i think it could be the long hair thats throwing me off.
guest
I like the video and her voice, but she needs to get over the Chris Brown incident because now she’s just trying to make money off of it.
sunflower / 255 posts
it’s not her boyfriend in the video.. it’s some guy who she seemed happy to flirt with in the club.. and then it turned voilent.. and that justifies her shooting him?
anyway.. it’s a bit meh. I like what she does normally, even the OTT weird clips, but this kinda just annoys me.. the clip is too twisted and literal.
orchid / 211 posts
I like some of her songs, but I don’t much care for her. I heard she did a duet with Eminem, and she sings, “I like the way it hurts.” Really? You didn’t seem to like the way it hurt when Chris Brown smacked you around. Hypocrite.
guest
I like it. and I like how its kind of speaking out against rape. A lot of people have it happen to them. and it makes us feel better/stronger.
guest
@theflowerstem@xanga - I don’t think she can “get over it” Its hard. Its not something you can wake up one morning and be like “meh that happened… moving on”

Btw am I the only one that thinks she looks a bit like Calypso from POTC? o.O :b

Personally, I love the song and the video. I especially love the reggae feel to it.
Instead of just thinking “OmG RiHaNnA wAnTs Us AlL tO bEh MuRdErErZ!1!”, maybe just think of it in a way that she’s saying- take a stand against those who have viciously hurt you. Some of you might go “Yeah, take a stand, but murder?” Y’know what? Rapists/abusers, especially those who are serial and refuse to stop, just don’t really deserve to be on this Earth. But that’s just me.

I would have liked it more if she would have shown a little more reason as to why she did what she did. she only had one moment of voilence and it was over.
sunflower / 264 posts
@WaitingToShrug@xanga - Surely it’s only self-defence if she killed him in the act rather than shooting him the next day?
guest
I still love Chris Brown more than her.
guest
Momma… just killed a man. Put a gun against his head. Pulled my trigger now he’s dead. Momma.. life had just begun. Now I’ve gone and thrown it all away. Momma.. oooOOOoOoooohhhhh.
guest
it’s a song and a video…get over it whoever thinks it’s “too violent”
guest
I don’t like ideas like these… Lady Gaga’s paparazzi annoyed me too. :/
guest
@ncxcorexkid@xanga - Lol! XD

The song is pretty catchy though!

@Eyesbehindthesoul@xanga - I think the video clearly implies she was beaten and raped. That’s hardly “one moment” of violence.

It sucks to rape/beat a girl then she comes back and kills you.
I think the message is all rather sad. Men can beat/rape a woman but if she reacts to it by killing him then she’s the bad one. No, honestly I don’t think she is. I think it is empowering to women actually. I don’t care if a man who does that lives or not. He hunted her down after she left, so she returns the favor. I don’t think the video is particularly violent and men shouldn’t get away with rape as easily as they do.
I think she has a message to share whether that has to do with her beating or not, I don’t know. My guess is that yes it does… look at how Chris Brown still has his fame. With the beating she got, he should be in jail right now.

As someone who has been raped by two different people on separate occasions during my lifetime, I can say that there’s definitely a part of the grieving process in which I totally imagined killing those people. And it wasn’t benign shooting them in the head from far away, I imagined viciously torturing them to death.
That said – this entire song is about how she didn’t mean to kill him and it seems like she’s full of remorse. Why is everyone flipping out about a music video where a woman takes revenge on her rapist and then regrets it? There are so many songs about men killing other men and not having any regrets whatsoever. Also – this is art. Art doesn’t have to be taken literally all the time.
I also have no idea if this has anything to do with Chris Brown and I wouldn’t read that much into it.
guest
Well, I support the killing of a rapist, BUT she wouldn’t get away with this in court. “/
guest
@theflowerstem@xanga - yes because you know FOR A FACT that this video is about him beating the shit out of her right?
guest
@Asinine_Dreams@xanga - Good for you! Maybe you can be his next beat down. Or the next person he calls a faggot publicly, or maybe you can invite him over to dinner where he throws a temper tantrum and curses your parents out. I’m sure he’ll be willing to show you how much he loves you too.
guest
@At_Sixes_And_Sevens@xanga - It’s pretty kewl of you to not understand the song in any fucking way whatsoever. Hey dumbass, she understands she made an impulsive decision and that she regrets it. And please refrain from overgeneralizing about “the black community” based on some fucking show you watched on television. Fucking tool
guest
@pika_whoosh@xanga - Yes, that’s exactly what I said. And I think it’s reasonable to do so. I am learning how to shoot so that I can carry a firearm for exactly that purpose- self-defense.
guest
Def not too violent. Could have been worse! I love her and I love the song! great video. Good job on shooting him down!! “D
Bastard!
guest
@sinnerd1@xanga - as a survivor of repugnant horrific domestic violence that literally nearly killed me I just so appreciated your comment that I had to say thanks. Sometimes it feels like no one understands.
Gracias,
Zoe

Like her hair long.
If movies can have all sorts of revenge themes accompanied with violence, why is it suddenly an issue for a music video? I’m not saying it’s right, I just don’t like that Rihanna is making headlines about it when almost every year, a revenge themed movie is a blockbuster hit.
guest
@thisisjustatest123456@xanga - I don’t know it for a fact, but she was a victim of domestic violence because of him so I assumed this video was refrencing that.
guest
@thisisjustatest123456@xanga - His music is better than hers. Period.
He needs to get rid of his Sisqo-like hair though, whereas Rihanna’s hair looks beautiful long and red.
guest
i think it is artistic. by the way her hair looks amazing in this video.
guest
It wasn’t the best video I’ve ever seen… It wasn’t too violent, either, nor do I think it was her artistic response to how she saw her relationship with Brown ending… Honestly, I think all rapists should die. Although her approach was really sloppy. It wasn’t close-range and her target was in an area full of people. Good thing she was such a good shot, otherwise, there would have been an innocent death toll.
guest
I think it shows that she’s fighting back. I love it
guest
It’s barely violent compared to other videos out there. The video implies that he raped her, not that he’s her bf who is beating her. Rape is too common, even in America. Violence against women is something that isn’t taken serious enough. I love her song, and how she did the video.
guest
@soulstar76@xanga - I also was the victim of such violence. It’s sad how many take this kind of thing in a light manner, not a serious manner.
guest
I have no opinion of Rihanna or her music, because I don’t listen to it, and I’m not going to start now because of this. So, yeah, no opinion.
@six6vi@xanga - Paparazzi was much worse, based solely on the fact that Gaga went and killed Alexander Skarsgard.
guest
@Grtt@xanga - True. I love that man.

i’m sorry to hear that an agree with you fully; hope you have an awsome day 2day

@Eyesbehindthesoul@xanga - exactly.

I don’t remember where I read this but I do believe that Rihanna stated that the song wasn’t really about Chris Brown is more about trying to raise awareness about rape or abuse and how it is not okay but that no one really talks about it.
guest
Good song, powerful video. This song and video have nothing to do with Chris Brown, it’s about a girl who takes revenge on her rapist.
*Xanga’s Batman Out*

It’s nice that she’s getting her issues out or whatever… but hold fuck this bitch is so crazy.

After what she went through…. she can do whatever she wants with it for however long she wants.
If this is her way of dealing with it…. then good for her.
But I love the song…. and holy hell I didn’t realize her chest was so big!

@WaitingToShrug@xanga - Agreed

@AngelAsh_86@xanga - First of all the song is Love the Way You Lie. Second, I’m not sure if you’re trolling or just an idiot. It’s not a BDSM anthem about loving to get beat up. It’s a song about being in an abusive relationship and giving up and accepting the abuse.
Anyway, I don’t like Rihanna but I do like this video and song. I don’t think she’s trying to promote violence or killing your assailant. It’s a manifestation of the feelings and thoughts that may go through a victim’s head after something so traumatic happens to him or her.

I loved it.
And man, is she ever beautiful. Her long red hair is so gorgeous!

I know it was a horrible thing for CB to beat her (not to be insensitive but a black eye, not really a beating) but it seems to me that she’s milking it for all the publicity and sales she can get. I mean, I think I was in like 10th grade when it happened. By singing songs about revenge she’s kinda playing down the fact that this happens to women everyday. Women that aren’t lucky enough to just walk away from it. Women that it emotionally and physically scars for life.
If it really was that big of a deal to her, how about she does something to change the situation and sing songs empowering women and promoting rehabilitation to these battered girls. But no, she has to make money and look sexy while singing about rape.
