Chinese street vendors are reportedly selling live baby turtles and fish in tiny baggies to be used as keychains.
According to Helablog:
Filled with colored water, each 7-centimeter long key ring encapsulated either one Brazil turtle or two small kingfish, and is filled with “nutrient rich” water, by which vendors claim allow the animals to live for several months. Unfortunately, after your few months are up, you have a carcass key chain.
Experts say the animals will likely run out of oxygen and suffocate before they would die from any sort of nutrient deprivation.
<sadface> I grew up with pet turtles, and this makes me so, so sad! And on a visceral level, who wants a dead animal swinging from your keychain?
orchid / 237 posts
That is so sad, and strange. I love big keychains, but I wouldn’t want one that big. I drop my keys and keeping a live pet on my keychain isn’t very appealling…
guest
Oh, that just threw a wrench in my mood. Poor babies. =[
daisy / 727 posts
Aww that’s so sad. I’d start crying if I ever saw it just floating there dead.
guest
God this is absolutely terrible =(
If I ever came across this I would probably buy a bunch just to get them out of there and into a proper habitat.
guest
@justXforXyou_beautiful@xanga - agreed.
guest
What the fucking hell. Where are the PETA people?!?!
guest
I wish I could buy them all up so I could cut them open and let them go free. ;_;
rose / 812 posts
@justXforXyou_beautiful@xanga - Me too!
What. The. Fuck?! This is animal cruelty! Where are the cops?!

This reminds me of those crazy shoes that had a goldfish in the heel. It’s kind of interesting until the animal dies and then it’s just cruel and, let’s be honest, not very pleasant.
guest
This is one of the stupidest things that I’ve ever seen.
daisy / 669 posts
o no.. that’s so sad >_<
guest
I love turtles
so sad.
guest
This is so cruel. These poor animals, like ANY other animal in the WORLD, deserve to live in a natural environment. People should stop using them for fashion, fun, and food. I really despise human beings sometimes =[
guest
Animals mean nothing to those people.
guest
Why would you want a live creature on your keys? I abuse my keys so much. Fuck lack of oxygen — it would probably die after I forget I have a live animal on them and just chuck them on the ground or in my purse. Not that I’d ever get one of these. -.-
guest
This is horrible!!! My soul hurts
guest
wow my turtle was that big when i first got him in chinatown. If I ever saw that on the street I would buy all of them and put them in my tank. Thats animal cruelty dude.
guest
@bittersweetromantic@xanga - yea i remember those shoes but atleast those you could open it up to feed them. but this… this is just wrong!
sunflower / 334 posts
…for them its dinner on key chain. Fast Food, marinated to your liking.
guest
And yet we’re so quick to admire the Chinese and feel culturally inferior to them…
@Starry_eyed_gypsy@xanga - I don’t think Communist governments allow lobbyist groups.
guest
@Thumper49047@xanga - Errr, what? XD
I don’t think you’d want to eat something that died like that anyway. Not very fresh, right?
guest
That is so cruel. It’s funny how they think these inventions are cool and inspiring when they’re really stupid and pointless.
guest
That’s stupid. It doesn’t even look cool. Why don’t you just got buy a pet turtle? It’ll last longer.
hydrangea / 89 posts
How cruel! Why would anyone want one of those “keychains”?
guest
………what a bad idea!
guest
ok…Stupidest Idea ever..
Hmm maybe they should still the the plastic animals that poop…I had a pig on my key chain in high school.
guest
Typical China…
guest
this reminds me of the planet of the apes movie, where I want to do the same thing to these humans, such as put them in captivity as pets, so they see what it is like to be treated like freaks.
guest
DUDE. WHAT THE FUCK. is anyone doing anything to stop them? sometimes i think people are born without a brain for coming up with sickening shit like this
guest
Weird. o.O
guest
@Starry_eyed_gypsy@xanga - They’re getting famous people to pose naked to protest this. Or something along those lines.
guest
I guess I’m the only one that thinks this is kinda neat. haha. Until the fish/turtle dies, of course.
guest
thats horrible !!! If i ever find them im buying the bin and freeing them
guest
@Youthful_Ignorance@xanga - Yeah it’s pretty cool being able to only live in a baggy that’s only about 3 inches long your whole life.
guest
@WannaBeFit73@xanga - its a fish.
guest
@Youthful_Ignorance@xanga - And a turtle…
guest
Either way, its not that big of a deal.
guest
@Youthful_Ignorance@xanga - Animal cruelty isn’t a big deal? Wow you really live up to your username, don’t you?
guest
Once again, its a fish. You can call it ignorant; I think everyone is being overly sensitive. Difference of opinion, I suppose. Ever catch lightning bugs as a child? Same thing. The lightning bugs were nice for a few days, but eventually died in that little jar. It isn’t cruel. Survival of the fittest, eh?
guest
@Youthful_Ignorance@xanga - Why do you keep saying “It’s just a fish” when they include turtles too! Do you have some sort of short memory problem? And turtles aren’t fish, if that’s what you are trying to say.
guest
Yeah i was wondering how they would really be able to breathe for long in a sealed baggie… anyway, that’s really sad. Poor creatures.
Why does it have to be that? If people like sea life keychains, why not make like a Lucite or acrylic block (like the “water”) with a rubber or plastic turtle or fish inside? >_> Or like a plastic encasement with water or gel to be the bubbles and a figure inside. It would be cute and not harm anything. =/
Also, we let our fireflies go after a few hours >_<
guest
i’m normally not the type to jump on the “save the animals” bandwagon but this is terrible….
that poor lil baby turtle
magnolia / 1055 posts
I would take it out of the keychain and keep it for myself
guest
@WannaBeFit73@xanga - ok. Its just a fish. And Its just a turtle. Does that make you happy?
guest
@Youthful_Ignorance@xanga - No because you’re still being an heartless loser. Oh well, that’s your problem, anyways…but people like you really irritate me lol
guest
This is just awful and should be stopped NOW.
What is wrong with these people?!
guest
that’s just creepy and animal cruelty.
guest
ok that’s so messed.
guest
How cruel! That should be illegal.
guest
that’s just wrong… hopefully whoever buys them will put them in a tank of some sort
guest
If anyone read the article….according to their* law its not considered animal abuse
& let me get this straight its not “cruel” to eat fish / turtles… ?
Is it not animal abuse if there’s overcrowding in fish tank at supermarket that some fishes are dead and flipped over
I dont get why everybody all upset over it.
Yes, its cruel that the poor turtle / fish are stuck inside the keychain but honestly people are still buying it
guest
Is there any way to stop this?
guest
@phuck_diz_shiz@xanga - And their law is bullshit. And who said anything about it not being cruel to eat them or keep them in an overcrowded tank? Why do you people always jump to stupid conclusions?
guest
@WannaBeFit73@xanga - so what if their law is bullshit* its their* law
It’s cruel* but what can you* do about it ?
Saying its cruel to eat *animals* then dam all of us are cruel for enjoying hamburgers and fat slabs of steak and carrying leather handbags
tulip / 5 posts
Animal cruelty is really getting worse isn’t it?
Poor turtles! I promise I’ll buy you all and set you free
guest
That is terrible. I’d buy one just to leave the poor things out of the plastic baggie
orchid / 209 posts
O no! This is so cruel.
But we do have to remember what culture is selling them. The same culture that’s animal control is allowed to kill stray dogs right on spot in inhumane ways. They don’t value animals like we do. And PETA does not exist in china, trust me. It would be a civil war.
guest
If I’m given one or bought one I think I’d just cut it open and let the turtles and fish out and put them in a proper tank or something. Screw the key chain!
guest
@phuck_diz_shiz@xanga - Look, their law is stupid, this is cruel…and saying “It’s their law” is completely irrelevant. Just because it’s law doesn’t make it right. I guess according to your logic we shouldn’t give a fuck about what’s going in Egypt right now, right?
guest
I need a new key chain but nothing like this.
daisy / 597 posts
I’d be buying all of them to cut them out and free them. haha
guest
This makes me want to cry… )’:
guest
The thing that gets them killed will probably be when people toss their keys somewhere. This is horrible! People are so cruel.
guest
i’d totally just buy all of those, break them open and set them free T^T
guest
@phuck_diz_shiz@xanga - I think the difference is that the ones who are eaten often get to life a more comfortable life first (like many fish may be caught straight from the sea before they are sold, or even swim around in captivity), and even then they only die to keep us alive. Not just to entertain us.
I mean, that’s how I see it, at least. :\
guest
That’s all kinds of horrible!
guest
Oh no!!!!!!!! I hope this isn’t true!!!!!!!
guest
@Sirius_Fan_Girl@xanga - you made a good point and thanks for not being catty
but some parts I kinda* disagree. Not all animals live comfortable life before they die — did you see the youtube video on KFC and how the chicken get slaughtered ? / video of slaughterhouse of pigs — its pretty disturbing
guest
@WannaBeFit73@xanga - lmao just thought I’ll correct you its the crisis in “Libya” not “Egypt” you’re close though
It clearly showed you paid a lot of attention to the news
guest
WTF?! This is downright plain awful. I hate these people. Poor baby turtles. I grew up with turtles too, I have some as pets, and my great grandmother had a pond in her backyard full of them.
Awful awful people! what is wrong with them?!
guest
@phuck_diz_shiz@xanga - Either way, my point still stands and great job for ignoring it!
guest
i would buy it then rescue the turtle
guest
@thepsychoticraccoon@xanga - i was thinking the same thing. mine’d die from internal bleeding and a concussion lol.
guest
Ehhhhhhh. T_____T
guest
Well… it’s different.
guest
That is just sick… Reminds me of the folks who put cats in jars and literally feed them through the opening of the jar for their entire lives
It is beyond sick and twisted.
guest
@Youthful_Ignorance@xanga - don’t worry. I thought it was funny, too. And kind of cool.
They probably don’t stay in the bags long enough to suffer. They’re probably eaten on the go… like a zip-loc of cheerios.
orchid / 105 posts
@UnconventionalButterfly@xanga - Unfortunately, China does not have animal rights laws

this is so sad.and kind of sick. they shouldent be allowed to do this.
guest
INHUMAN
guest
@lonelystrangergirl@xanga - Thank you lol. People get crazy over dumb things.
guest
I’d buy one, to say open it and be like ‘BE FREE’ .
its so sad really.
There animals keep them as pets but they aren’t fucking keychains

People, when you buy something like that to “save” the animal, you just create a bigger market for it! The only way to truly stop the sale is to stop the purchase – educate, educate, educate, so there’s no incentive for purchasing something like that. And that’s a hatchling red-eared slider in the bag – they’re considered an invasive species in much of the world (even though they’re native to the Mississippi River system, not Brazil), so releasing them “to the wild” could be an ecological disaster for native species of plants and animals. Sliders grow to be 6-11″ long with proper care – and there are thousands for adoption in the US from rescues, shelters, and humane societies (but beware of websites selling baby sliders and calling it “adoption” – a real rescue will ask you to fill out an application).
