I’m a tampon girl, but I usually try not to wear them throughout my whole period; I try to also use pads. BUT, every time I do use a pad, I remember, “oh right, PADS SUCK.”
Here are 5 reasons why:
1. They’re bulky. Who wants to feel like they’re strapped into a diaper all day?
2. You have to wear normal underwear with them, instead of thongs. Hello, VPL!
3. The, uh, smells. YOU KNOW WHAT I’M TALKING ABOUT, LADIES.
4. How even if the pad is like 12 inches long, it still leaks in the back while you’re sleeping.
5. All that environmental waste! The wrappers, the adhesive strips, the pads themselves….not great.
What do you like or dislike about pads, Lovelies?
guest
I like pads because they make me feel secure.
The bulkiness is kind of offsetting, though.
And really, you shouldn’t leak in the back if you’re wearing them properly.
Maybe you should move them more to the back?
guest
lmao, all the above reasons and i just hate how i can feel myself bleeding out, esp when you stand up from sitting for awhile and its like a fucking bomb just went off in your vagina.
rose / 834 posts
1. Why do you wear them during the day?
2. What are you wearing during your period that you can see your underwear through? I typically wear jeans with normal underwear, and you can’t see underwear through them.
4. That sucks. I don’t bleed at night.
5. If you actually care about this, why not just switch to one of those period cups? Tampons cause a lot of waste too.
hydrangea / 78 posts
I’m used to wearing bulky pads and I like them whether or not they leak. I don’t really like the idea of wearing tampons because you have to change them frequently and you can’t sleep with them on for too long.
guest
lol pads are still more comfortable to me, but i def wear tampons in situations i’d wanna feel cleaner or have “VPLs”

1. They’re bulky. — You can get ones that arne’t so bulky
2. You have to wear normal underwear with them, instead of thongs. –So you complain about bulkyness yet you’re comfy with a piece of fabric riding up your ass?3. The, uh, smells.- You can get ones that don’t
4. How even if the pad is like 12 inches long, it still leaks in the back while you’re sleeping.—Only of you have a really really heavy period. Tampons do leak too, you know.5. All that environmental waste!–….and yet you’re still using tampons, that are still a waist?

all problems solved. i know it sounds gross at first, but it is SO wonderful. seriously. i’ll never go back to disposable products, ever. no more itchy allergic reactions… no more risk of TSS… no more painful insertion/removal… no more environmental waste… no more nighttime leaks… yeah. it rocks.
guest
These are kind of stupid reasons. If you’re wearing them right, they shouldn’t bleed through, and why would you wear a thong on your period? Thongs are uncomfortable to say the least.
orchid / 105 posts
If your pad smells, that sounds like a personal cleanliness issue. I have pretty much almost always worn pads and they never smell. I don’t like tampons. I don’t buy the pads that are bulky, and I even managed to figure out a way to wear a thong with my pads AND not have them leak. As for the leaking in the back thing, I just sleep on my side.
guest
@marine_g1rlfriend@xanga - hahahaha a bomb….so true!
guest
I always wear two pads in my sleep, so it doesn’t leak in the back. D:
Pads don’t bother me as much as they used to, though. They don’t seem bulky to me.
guest
number four. enough said. although i have made a diy cloth pad, and at my worst crafting, it even worked wonders. it was way more hygenic, felt dry most of time, easy to make and make various pantyliners/ interchangable pads, and cut down on smells 85-90%/. if i wasnt so lazy, had a steady place to live with more privacy, id be using them again. i used to think they were nasty but im a fan for life
guest
I hate hate hate pads. I wore them for my first ever period, and HATED it. I switched to tampons afterwards, and I could never go back. They’re so uncomfortable, and I hate being able to…feel myself bleed, haha.
guest
@kaplowboom@xanga - theyre more comfy for me, and saves time on picking granny panties/bikinis out of your crack.. but id never wear a thong on period lol
guest
i agree!
pads just make me feel heavy. and it SMELLS.
tampons are so much easier.
makes me sometimes even forget that i am having my period.
it doesn’t have that awful smell.
guest
Ehhh I don’t like the idea of tampons right now. I’m pretty happy with using pads.
guest
BAHAHAHAHAH. TRUEEEEEE
guest
The people who say it doesn’t bleed through clearly don’t have really heavy periods. Most of the time it won’t leak, but sometimes it gets really bad. One time in high school I went on a trip to a middle school with my choir and I changed my pad like an hour before the performance. I ended up bleeding onto the seat I was sitting in. It was the grossest thing.
guest
there are pros and cons to pads and tampons. they have thinner pads now. if you wear a tight fitting pair of shorts when you sleep, it won’t leak. one can also say that tampons feel like you’re constantly reminded that you’ve got a wad of cotton jammed up there, but similar to pads, the user eventually gets used to it and doesn’t notice it that much later. or when you yank out the tampon, there might be slight blood clots that accumulated, so it drips everywhere like melted cheese tainted with red chili cheese fries color
guest
i’ll stick to my pad dont like the idea of sticking a piece of cotton stick up my vaj

Leakage is an issue with pads. I get the absolute biggest ones, Always Extra Heavy Overnight Maxi With Flexi Wings, to sleep in. I’ve only had leakage with those a couple of times with really heavy flow or if I don’t put them far back enough. As for odors, I like to use Stayfree Pads which have the odor neutralizers and in my opinion work fairly well. I also get Summers Eve wipes or baby wipes in order to keep myself as clean as possible during that time in between regular and thorough showers. I don’t like to use tampons because of the risk of TSS, so I use them only when the flow is so intense I run through pads in a very short time. I’m also always on the look out for exercises and supplements that reduce menstrual pain or make the experience more manageable. Oona herbal supplements have been helpful in that regard, as well as yoga (throughout the month) and T-Tapp exercises.

haha i agree. but i hate tampons. they scare me. i haven’t worn one in years. i only do when i am swimming.
guest
I prefer tampons when I sleep. Just so I dont have to get blood all over my sheets. My periods only last like 4-5 days so its not as bad as a full week. Plus Im so irregular that I usually get my period every other month or so.
guest
I donno how these girls all disagree? You can’t smell the blood when its sitting in your underwear for a few hours? Seriously? Do you bleed perfume?
I agree with everything here lol. Except I actually have to wear tampons and pads because I tend to bleed through super tampons in about 2 hours but they can last up to 4-5 for me too. So I wear pads as a backup.
I hate periods so much that I just got Seasonique so I would only have 4 a year.
guest
@porcelain_alice@xanga - That thing is so gross. You pour the blood in the toilet and you reuse the cup? So nasty. And doesn’t the cup fill up with blood and spill over all over the place? Especially if you leave it in for 12 hours.
guest
@omgroxie@xanga - you rinse it out well before you reuse it… and you don’t leave it in for 12 hours if your flow is heavy enough to fill it before that. i would think that would be obvious.
if you find it gross, you certainly are not obligated to use one. i find it no more gross than shoving cotton in myself, and less gross than having a bloody pad in my underwear.
guest
@porcelain_alice@xanga - but how do you know when it’s filled? I don’t fully understand it.

My pads are NOT bulky…
I have NO idea why you’d want to wear ASS FLOSS instead of a thin pad
I have no idea why you’d want to wear ASS FLOSS THAT STINKS instead of a pad.
I have NO IDEA why you’d want to wear ASS FLOSS THAT STINKS AND MIGHT STILL LEAK instead of a pad.
I have ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA why you’d want to wear ASS FLOSS THAT STINKS AND MIGHT STILL LEAK AND CREATES SERIOUS ENVIRONMENTAL HAZZARDS DUE TO SMELL…
Did I mention that I’m not sure why you would want to wear ass floss?
Just trying to be clear.

lol i used pads for a while because i was terrified of a tampon but finally tried it one day and it wasn’t as uncomfortable as the past times i tried and i never looked back. i agree with all of these. i just can’t stand pads at all, it’s so damn uncomfortable, the feeling of that wad in between you and the blood just soaked in there. i can’t stand that feeling of standing up and it flooding out lol. there are always going to be two schools of thought; either you love tampons and hate pads or vice versa. i personally can never go back to pads, i’ll use panty liners once in while but that’s it.
guest
@omgroxie@xanga - i wear it with a pantyliner. the first couple times you use it, you’ll know it’s full because you’ll get a little bit of leaking, just like with a tampon. now i know my flow pattern, so i know how long it normally takes before i need to remove it, and i rarely have any leaking. just like how you know what size pad or tampon you usually need. i find it easier than a tampon, because if i wanted to take it out for any reason, it doesn’t hurt to remove even if it’s not full, whereas (for me at least) removing a non-soaked tampon is super painful…
guest
I get thin pads. I double up in case I can’t change my tampon when it’s done — it’s a habit that carried over from high school when I would often have to keep the same tampon in from that morning because I had no time to use the bathroom to change. And there’s such a difference between the second and third day (like, Niagara-Falls-esque flow) to the three days after (like my uterus is suddenly a dripping faucet) it’s easier just to leave a pad on all day than to keep a tampon in for the light days. Pros and cons to both but I definitely prefer tampons.

I like pads like 10x better than tampons. I even have those little tampons, I only wear tampons if I need to for an extended period of time.
The main reason i can’t wear tampons is the size of them when they come out. They expand a whole lot, and my flow is EXTREMELY heavy, so they’re fucking huge. and I have to end up crying like a little bitch when I take them out ’cause if feel like someone ripped my vagina. (TMI? oh well.)

1. there are pads that aren’t bulky and are very discreet.
4. damn your flow must be really heavy or you’re sleeping weirdly.
3 & 5. tampons are just as environmentally unfriendly and smelly.

Pads rock. Though I hate them simply because it means I am on my period. LOL. But I prefer them to tampons.
guest
I like wearing pads. They aren’t that bad and they don’t smell if you just change them on a regular basis. I change mine during periods in school which is about every 45 minutes. I hate tampons, I could never insert them right so I just got comfortable with pads. I reallly have no problem with it
guest
i hate the lot of it: pads, tampons, everything (who doesn’t?) i actually hate wearing tampons tho and prefer pads (except the panty lines part. who wants to be stuck in jeans the whole week?). i hate tampons cuz i always have to wear liners with them because they ALWAYS leak no matter what brand or what absorbency i use. and i have to wear them at work because my work pants are khaki (the uniforms were obviously chosen by a male). at least you can buy pads that won’t be leaking all over the goddam place, like always infinity.

@ThaPlatinumOne@xanga - i definitely didn’t think it was possible to wear a thong and a pad at the same time. what’s the secret?
i agree! well i rarely wear thongs (only when i run out of normal underwear) so that isn’t a problem w/ me.. but if u wear tampons all day, you wouldn’t have any period blood flow at night, so you should be able to sleep w/ just a pantiliner.

I use both even though I prefer tampon over pad…I just can’t use tampons near the end because the flow is really light and even the small tampons are too drying. If you change them frequently, the smell shouldn’t be an issue. I wouldn’t even try to wear thongs during that time of the month as some commenters mentioned.
guest
who would want to wear a thong when on their period?!
and can’t tampons still leak?
what is VPL?
guest
@porcelain_alice@xanga - Yes! I love my Diva Cup.
http://www.divacup.com/ <— For anyone interested in no environmental waste, no “smells”, no bulkiness, no VPLs, and no drying/discomfort from tampons.
guest
Even if a pad is properly on right doesn’t guarantee it won’t leak. And you don’t know it’s time to change pads when you’re deep in sleep. Sometimes, I wake up like I have just given birth.
guest
And a thong is great to wear with pads because there is no worry about that pad moving and you getting blood on your underwear.
guest
@WaitingToShrug@xanga - thank you. i was sure there had to be at least one other cup convert on lovelyish =)
guest
Wait, so your not worried about leaking through what is basically a cylindrical and thinner version of the pad (same type of absorbing tissue used), which most definitley gets more blood and other disposed fluids and such(pardon me, I’m trying to be the least descriptive as possible), than a regular pad does, which most likely has to be changed out more than a pad does, but your worried about leaking from a 2 inch, double layered, thick pad? I mean I know it happens, which is why you should dispose and change out your pad, just as often as a tampon should be changed out.
Don’t get me wrong. I’m a tampon person too, the only time I won’t be caught wearing tampons is if I’m at home, and when I’m sleeping, but your reasons are a bit silly. You make those who only resort to pads due to whatever reasons they may have, feel sort of embarrassed since they apparently “smell” and can’t wear thongs.
Everyone has their preferences and their reasons.
guest
BTW, I’m really liking this cup idea that’s being pitched out. I’m definitley looking to try one of those. I’ve been wanting to, but have been sort of hesitant since I don’t know any personally who uses one who can provide me with a testimonial. Hehe. You can’t find it in stores…right?

@UnconventionalButterfly@xanga - agreed. Ive never worn a tampon (mainly because I’m Indian and it would break the hymen thereby having my future husband wonder if I’m really a virgin….or it could just be a cultural thing, idk) but now that I’m w/ my bf, I have no excuse (yes, I lost my v-card to him, no he’s not Indian–nothing against Indian guys, I’m just not attracted to them and I can’t see myself getting married to one (I have my reasons, and its not superficial, and no, I’m not being racist–I am Indian myself you know)) but getting back to the point, even though my v-card isn’t an issue, I still wouldn’t only because it probably would feel weird to me.

Having something shoved up my crotch all day is way more uncomfortable than wearing a pad, in my opinion. And if you stink down there, it’s more than likely because of your personal hygiene. I’ve never experienced any bad odors. Nasty.
Also, thongs are disgusting and trashy to begin with, but if you absolutely have to wear them, ever heard of panty liners? Just double them up, genius.
daisy / 639 posts
People are giving a lot of hate on this, wow.
I agree, I hate pads and I was forced to use them for the first year and a half of my period because my mom didn’t feel safe with me using tampons. I’d suffer from leaks every single time, every, single, time. When I’d try a different length of size or whatever, I’d still leak because they would bunch up (I always figured that had to do with the fact that my thighs used to touch).
I used a tampon wrong for the first few months (I didn’t push it in far enough so I wasn’t even able to sit properly) but because I didn’t leak, I kept using it and eventually learned to push it in more. I don’t see the problem with them but that’s just me personally.
I just don’t see why people are hating so much on this post and the OP! They’re acting like they know everything – everyone’s different so whatever?
guest
I’ve used pads most of my life since it is what my mother always had in the house. I’ve been using tampons for about a year now and I use both tampons and pads through my periods. Both are fine for me. During sleep I tend to use tampons since I like sleeping on my side and also your fourth issue about leakage is a problem.
Pads don’t really seem bulky to me, probably being use to them and I normally use the smaller ones, tampons are more convenient to carry around. As for smell, it does sometimes on heavier days especially when there is a lot of old blood, but a good wipe and shower fix it. They do stink up bathrooms when they pile up though.
Tampons I don’t like in the aspect of cotton bits being left behind or possible string snapage. Also sometimes I leak even on the heavy ones.
guest
I never understood the claim that pads feel like diapers. I used to have to wear the largest ones Always made and even then they didn’t feel like that. Sometimes it was uncomfortable with certain pairs of underwear but normally that stopped after 30 minutes of wearing it (maybe it helped that at the time I had to change it every 1.5 hours). And the smell…if you don’t let the blood dry on it that smell isn’t present I’ve found. Tampons I find are pickier when it comes to putting them in comfortably. It took me forever to be able to put one in the first time at the right angle, even though I was so careful about following those directions they have. I’ve only started using them over pads now that my periods are lighter because they allow you to do more things (like swim, go to a water park, they don’t move out of place when you run, etc). But I actually still prefer pads for when I’m not being active.

I was SO skeptical before I tried it. I had all the same sentiments that you probably do. I didn’t want to get all up in there, I was afraid of leaking, etc., etc.. But seriously. I haven’t bought pads for myself in over 8 years. They are only good for after you give birth IMO. My daughter even uses tampons, I don’t want her to have silly issues about her body or catching her flow. It is her choice to use whichever. I only use tampons and I haven’t died yet of TSS… much more likely to die in a car accident anyway.

@haley1262@xanga - If they hurt when you remove them, you might be using ones that are too thick like super or something?. They shouldn’t hurt coming out unless they are very dry. There aren’t many nerves in that part of the vagina.

I didn’t know this post was asking for anyone’s opinion on your underwear choice :p and it’s a valid one… I don’t like seeing other people’s underwear through their clothes and wouldn’t want to inflict that uncomfortable feeling on anyone else.
guest
I prefer tampons for several reasons, but the main reason is that when I’m wearing pads, I can feel it everytime I stand up, change how I’m sitting, etc. With tampons, once I get used to the feeling (which only takes a few minutes), I usually forget it’s there. I’ve noticed I have a lot happier of a period when I wear tampons, because as I said, I forget I’m wearing one, so I forget I’m even on my period to begin with =P
The only reason I would consider switching from tampons to that cup thingy is because tampons produce so much waste! Whenever I get my own place, I plan on trying out the cup thingy, but right now I live with my dad, and I know most of those cups, you have to boil them to sterilize them after you’re done using it… and it would just be beyond awkward for my dad to walk into the kitchen while I’m boiling my feminine products o.0
daisy / 502 posts
@PseudoEuphoric@xanga - In that case, pads can be just as harmful to the urethra since movement causes pads to shift. But, this makes sense- especially the analogy of penetration during sex.

@xxxLiveLaughLove@xanga - dude that’s the worst for me. at least with tampons there’s less clean-up. the thought of all the blood and tissue of just chilling down there when wearing a pad freaks me out.
guest
I cant use pads or tampons. After I had my daughter and stopped breastfeeding I got horrible allergic reactions to both. So now that I know that there are all kinds of chemicals in pads and tampons I wouldnt want to use them anyways. Putting chemicals in and around your vagina is just a bad idea.
guest
a) I only used pads for my whole teenagehood because my mom would never buy tampons due to the possibility of TSS. I absolutely LOATHED pads though. My flows were SO heavy, that I had to use the really long, super absorbent overnight ones during the day. Even though they had giant wings, I would sometimes still leak over them. One time I even had to call my parents to pick me up from school because over the course of my first period class I had leaked right through my pad and through my jeans (I know, thats an unusually heavy flow and I probably should have been on the pill or something, but my mom was against that too and never took me to the doctor because that’s almost certainly what he would have prescribed). Even when my flow wasn’t quite that heavy, I could still always feel myself bleed and it literally made me gag. I felt so disgusting and uncomfortable sitting in my flow, and no matter how often I changed there was always flow to be sat in. And it was even worse when I woke up in the mornings. After I moved out and started buying my own products, I switched to tampons and never looked back. I haven’t leaked even a fraction of the amount of times I did with pads. In fact, other than the cramps, I normally don’t even feel like I’m on my period when I use tampons.
b) To those who say there is no smell, blood itself, no matter where it comes from, has a certain scent. When mixed with naturally occurring vaginal bacteria, it makes a very noticeable odour. Now some people might have a different PH down there or different amounts of bacteria that might make a difference in the strength of the odour, and for some it may be less noticeable, but it’s definitely there. It’s impossible not to have any odour at all. And even if you don’t have a noticeable odour, your bathroom trash can definitely will when blood soaked pads have been sitting in it all day. Thats another thing I hate about them.
c) Regarding the menstrual cup, I’ve always wondered what you would do if it got full while out in public. I mean, you can’t exactly go into a stall to empty it, then get out of the stall to rinse at the sink, then go back in the stall again to insert. That would be gross and messy, and I wouldn’t want other people watching me rinse out my cup, nor would I want to see anyone else doing that. And reinserting without rinsing would be rather unhygienic.
guest
i have to agree, pads are GROSS.
i feel like im sitting in a diaper. then i can feel when i start to bleed. and then the blood just SITS there. its like wetting your pants and sitting in it until you can get to the bathroom. then you have to clean yourself cause it gets on your vag lips. gross just gross. they make me feel totally insecure. at least with tampons i stick them in and dont worry or feel them for hours. take them out, put a new one in, its quick easy and simple. pads are just so gross.

@sassypenguin@xanga - no i didn’t have any spotting. It just legit made me have my period for like a month straight. I didn’t enjoy it plus i don’t think it’s very healthy and it didn’t do shit for my pmdd

@hunger_isbeautifulxx@xanga - yeah, I’ve found that some of the symptoms of PMDD that I had were better treated by my anti-depressants. I was on Yaz at one point and it literally made me crazy. I attacked my brother with a fork and threatened to kill him. I would snap at anything. It was really scary. However, being on Seasonique and Prozac I gained 40lbs in one year without a change in eating habits. So I still don’t think I’ve found the right method yet. I just know I don’t want to go back to a period every month.

I absoutely hate pads. I haven’t used one for at least 6 years. I just really hate being able to feel myself bleed out, bleck. Talk about uncomfortable.

Smells? I mean I guess if you’re on the can and wafting the blood smell to your nose, yeah. But just chilling with your pants on you shouldn’t be able to smell anything.. unless you’re not hygenic?
As for bleeding at night, sleep on your side, and run for your life to the bathroom when you wake up. ‘Cause we all know what it’s like standing up straight after sitting/lying down for a few hours while wearing a pad. Bleugh. Worst feeling ever. Niagara Falls, anyone?
Pads are gross though, I never wear them out, just when I’m at home. Dislike being able to feel myself bleed. Not cool.
