And no, I’m not talking about their dimpled chins.
The two are connected by their outstanding donations to the tsunami relief effort in Japan. Both Bullock and Lovato donated $1 million of her own money to the cause. While this puts Lovato on the map as far as philanthropy goes, Bullock has long been known for her generosity (she donated $1 million after Haiti as well).
I commend these two for their donations, but am wondering why more celebs haven’t jumped on the donation bandwagon. Philanthropic superstars like Brangelina and Oprah are yet to pledge/fund raise any money.
For the record, there are still plenty of other celebs (Lady Gaga, Kim Kardashian, Jack Johnson…) that have done their philanthropic duty, but the support for Japan is coming in much slower than it did for previous natural disasters (Haiti, Indonesia, Katrina).
What do you think of the celebrity response to the tsunami? Do celebs have a “duty” to donate during major crises?

Considering everything that’s gone on there, from the earthquake to the tsunami and now the impending nuclear radiation scare, I am really surprised that people haven’t donated more. Hell, if I had a helicopter, I’d be over there pouring water on the cores as we speak. As it is, I simply gave money to the Red Cross.
I pray for Japan.

I think celebs do have a “duty” to respond to these crises as it’s for both public image and the fact that they are role models for most people out here.

both pics are from demi you idiot

@miyabyss_9106@xanga - I know, right? It’s like a part of their job description..lol. I love Demi and Sandra, and those are some generous donations, but I would feel like they are actually understanding the cause and doing what they can to help them if they actually go to the site, and volunteer some of their time to help clean up or what have you. But who am I to judge? lol

I wonder the same thing as well.
I’ve heard stories about this being “karma” for Japan because of Pearl Harbor but seriously, can we just put that in the past and focus on what’s happening now? No country or human being deserves to be killed or have their lives and homes destroyed because of a natural disaster.

@kate90b@xanga - LOL yea.
I think thats sweet. They didnt have to donate anything.

ROFL the same pic… hahahahahahahahaha

yeah they are the same picture but damn it may have not been her fault it could have been Xanga’s . we’ve got some mean ass people on here, geez! but yeah I do think that it’s their responsibility to act as such when something like this happens. as much money as they have giving away a million is like nothing – if all you can afford is $10 i feel like that means more because that’s your last but at the same time every bit counts!

I guess they don’t really have a “duty” cuz it’s their money, but I think it says a lot about them if they sit there and do nothing.

@babixk1umzy@xanga - Karma for Pearl Harbor…I can’t believe someone would even have the nerve to think that. I think if I personally witnessed anyone even imply that this was “karma for Pearl Harbor” I would slap them in the face. What an awful thing to say!!

@needmoreink@xanga - I know! I was speechless myself. There’s a lot I can say to retaliate about Pearl Harbor but I’m not that type of person and I don’t think it’s logical to equate a war with a natural disaster because clearly the two are different situations.

I don’t think it’s a duty necessarily, but it provides a really good example to everyone else. But I think a lot of people kind of depend on celebrities to donate massive amounts of money so a lot of people have an excuse not to. We can say, “Oh, the celebrities are donating enough.” I think it’s great though that so many famous people want to help. And it’s especially great that Demi in her young age is being so generous. A million bucks to her is a lot more than it is to Sandra Bullock or Oprah so I think Demi’s donation is setting a good example for the younger audiences.

Have you considered that famous people you have mentioned who have “yet to donate” have actually done it privately so as to not do it just for being in the limelight? I think that’s how you distinguish between those who donate wholeheartedly, and those who do it for publicity. But then again, whatever their reasons are, at least money has been donated in the end =)

I’m kind of caught in between here …

No! Nobody has a duty to give anyone else any money that they have earned. And no one has the right to demand it from them.

@babixk1umzy@xanga - I’ve heard that as well … I was appalled … Especially because (correct me if I’m wrong, I’m rusty in my U.S. History) around 2,000 people were killed at Pearl Harbor, and over 50,000 people were killed at Hiroshima/Nagasaki.
That karma thing is plain bullshit. I cannot believe people would think something like that after a disaster of this magnitude has happened. Besides, if it was karma, what is in store for the U.S.??
guest
@babixk1umzy@xanga - Yeah that’s ridiculous. I think people who are ridiculous enough to say that obviously forgot the part of US history called the atomic bomb. And still, I wouldn’t argue anything as “karma.”

I can’t say it’s their “duty” exactly but when you look at it logically-who has the ability to raise millions of dollars in a matter of minutes and all from one person? The rich, the celebrities etc. I’m unemployed and I still donated. But without the ridiculous amounts of money that these people have and considering how much money Japan is going to need in order to just barely recover, I don’t think it’s a problem to expect at least something from most of them.

I respect them a lot more for it, that’s for sure. I think it’s better than celebrities like, for example, Lady Gaga making a bracelet to sell to people and forwarding the donations. Yeah, she’s garnering money from the everyday person to send to Japan, but how much of it is she going to send (that’s her own)?

It is no obligation of any celeb to donate money to a cause.
But some people give anonymously, so we’d never know whether they have helped out or not. If I were a billionaire, I would donate without anyone’s knowledge.

Recognize those who do good. No matter how little or how large (:

No one has a duty to do anything. If you want to donate to someone or some cause, you should. It’s shouldn’t be something you have to do just because you’re in the public eye.
However, I do feel like a lot of celebrities and people alike are not showing enough support due to racism more than anything.
People will probably jump down my throat on this, but it’s not going to stop all the racist remarks coming from celebrities like 50 Cent, who tweeted that he flew out all of his hoes out of Japan when he found out the tsunami hit. It won’t stop people for saying “this is for pearl harbor,” nor is it going to stop the fact that people are saying that Japan is “well off and doesn’t need as much help.”
I’ve noticed this attitude all over, not just in the media. For Haiti, the fundraisers at my school happened almost immediately; there were 9 announced within the week of the news. For Japan, I heard of ONE fundraiser, and I am involved enough on campus to not just be ignorant of other event happening.
To be truly honest, the lack of aid coming from outside has been really bothering me. For crying out loud, THE YAKUZA, Japan’s biggest crime force, has donated more supplies and food to Japan than any outside country has.
The home is where the heart is, and being born in japan, I honestly wish there was more going on around me to help them over the one organization that is helping on my campus.
I’m not being naive about the current financial state of the world either, but at the same time, the financial problems we had during past natural disasters never stopped anyone.

@babixk1umzy@xanga - the argument also makes no sense because we “got them back” with the atomic bomb dropping. I think that balanced things out. O_O
guest
Of course they DONT have to, but they are plenty rich anyways… it can up their image!!
Anyways, I already donated. My heart goes out to Japan
guest
I think celebrities do it more often than is publicized. It sounds horrible, but a lot of them do it for tax reasons… So, if all celebrities weren’t pushed to donate money by their financial advisers, that would just be silly if they didn’t.
guest
I don’t think it’s their duty to donate anything at all.. It’s a privillige to be wealthy enough to be able to donate 1 million dollars, but I don’t think you have to, just because you can afford it..
But I think it’s amazing when people donate out of their own pocket, be it 5 dollars or 1 million
