“Use American manners”… Asian culture as a whole is generally IMMENSELY more respectful and polite than almost any culture in the world, especially in comparison to American culture and this brilliant student we have here.

There needs to be an IQ test that people like this need to pass before their granted access to the internet. Then again…she has the makings of a porn star so maybe she belongs on the internet. I know a bit of a classless blow but that TSUNAMI crack was way off the charts on the ignorance spectrum.

“I’ve never seen this happen before.” Really? Because, at least in my college/high school/public library I’ve seen all sorts of people on their cell phones. I’d almost bank on the fact that she texts on her phone while she’s sitting there in the library “studying.”

Not that I agree with her because I deal with this sort of annoyance at my school but it’s not just limited to Asians, please. Everyone does it. They’re either yapping away on their cell phones or shouting to another person in the room, even though we have rules about keeping the library a quiet place and if they can’t help but talk about who they saw at the club that weekend, then they should retreat to the student lounge where you can talk as loud as you want.

Most Asians do tend to raise their kids with a village, hence why many are so family oriented. She made it seem WRONG for family to visit their college kids. Like what is wrong seeing Asian parents walking around the apartment complex? Is it so wrong? Are they disturbing her with their laundry? If they’re not hurting you or bothering you, let them be. The fact that she just mentioned there are too many Asians in her apartment place is a result of her feeling like a minority, but by no means should she bash on them just because she “always sees Asians around her apartment”.

i think you need to calm down.  bringing up the tsunami thing was unacceptable, but the rest of the video was really not that big of a deal.  i imagine it was right after an asian person had done something to upset her, and when you’re upset your mind goes off on tangents.  it happens to all of us.  the only difference is that she put hers up on youtube.  not the smartest move, but she’s light years from being the worst person in the world.

Is there some trend going around to make racist videos? Since the new year I’ve seen about 4 videos [that have become "famous"] that do the same thing as this video, except towards black people! What’s wrong with everyone? This is 2011, it’s not cool or funny to be racist. If you think this way in the comfort of your home, whatever, what can anyone do? But why make it so public. That being said, this is the mildest form of racism out there – this is just an ignorant girl who defines asian people as “those weird people in the library I don’t know” and is basically xenophobic about everything that is different from her and how she was raised. Obviously, her racist bias makes her only see the Asian people who talk on their cell phones, when in reality EVERYONE is on their cells phones, talking or texting in the library. And I honestly don’t get why she’s mad about their parents baby-ing them – it’s not your life, get over it.

I’m asian and I’ve noticed asian fobs in the library talking loudly and laughing. it isn’t just an asian thing but I can’t stand people regardless of race, who don’t have common courtesy, whether it be at the library or movie theater, etc and don’t even attempt to whisper or tone down their noise level when other people give them that look I can relate to her being annoyed of people, but zeroing in on a race while mocking the asian language is crossing the line.

Yeah this video was annoying.. sadly this happens way too often even to my own face that I don’t get frustrated over things in this little scale anymore.  On one side I think that people shouldn’t waste they’re time getting so frustrated over something like this and shouldn’t hate on her this much but on the other side, I feel like it might do some good for America to see how much this kind of behavior is disliked so people will use a little more sense before they speak so ignorantly from now on.

I feel like ignorance will always be around but hopefully the world is working towards being a little less ignorant.  Sometimes, though, I think that’s the most far-fetched dream I have for the world along with ending war.

Yet further proof that being in college is not the same thing as being wise or even being a clever person. Someone very close to me was not able to graduate high school. She always regretted that and she feels inferior to anyone who has a high school diploma or higher…I insist that a diploma or a degree in no way makes someone smart, and I am constantly finding excellent examples of this. You can achieve a lot and still be incredibly thick. “All-American” Barbie here is just sharpening my point all over the place.

i am an asian-american student at ucla, and yes, i was appalled that this girl tarnished the reputation of my people and my university in just three minutes. i have to agree with some of the comments stated here about people talking in the library, but the fact of the matter is that no matter how much people say that we should expel her, we cannot do anything more than educate her about her actions. she has already apologized in the daily bruin, and honestly, the death threats are more horrible than her ignorance. she has the right to free speech, and she most definitely has the right to life. people need to stop insulting her; you are judging her just as much as she is judging the asians in the library, and the cycle of hatred needs to stop.

you know what, while this chick is extremely wrong and bitchy, i kinda agree with her about foreigners having bad manners. it’s not that theyre inherently rude, it’s just that manners vary from country to country. at my school, the education building is in the same building at all the study abroad students classes. and in that library, no matter asian/african/middle eastern/ english, theyre always all being loud either on the phone or in direct conversation.

it kills me so much. so now i trek across campus to the geology building, and study in the tiny library the size of my parents living room lol.

I actually think she is kinda funny and valid in her rant. Its the American political correctness that makes this a “horrible” video. I think a large part of why her rant was directed towards Asians is because UCLA has an impossibly HUGE Asian population. And guess what? While Asians tend to be respectful to others of their own ethnicity, especially elders, they ARE NOT respectful to those outside their ethnicity. They 1) dont care and 2) think they are superior. I make an emphasis on ethnicity because Chinese people feel they can be rude to Vietnamese, Japanese, etc but tend not to be rude to fellow Chinese speakers… except those who are direct immigrants, who (I have seen it!) discriminate against others not of their dialect/ province.

A lot of this applies to Americans as well, not denying that. She should have tried to provide equal ethnic representation so that it wouldnt be racist? Then it would be universally racist in most people’s eyes. This might be something you say to friends, but she should have been more careful where she published this online. Whomever her friends/subscribers are, they arent friendly to her. Poor girl.

Ah… I don’t see what was SO bad about it… it wasn’t outright racist… she did repeatedly say that she knows it sounds bad… BUT… and really, seriously…it does get frustrating that people get into these little racial cliques.

All of the Arabs hang out with other Arabs. All of the Polish people hang out with other Polish people and naturally, all of the Asians have their clique as well.

Granted, without race, we would develop cliques based on other things but me being one of the kids who was made fun of a lot in grammar school… trust me, it is a lot worse when you don’t even know what they’re saying because they’re making fun of you in a different language.

You know what they say about united we stand… if we’re all divided up by “Asian American,” “Irish American,” “Polish American,” etc, we are… divided.

I consider myself 100% American. I have no connection to a heritage that I know nothing about… and I think that we have grown, as a country, to be too edited. We are so terrified of offending someone that THIS is seen as a tirade and a hate rant… when it’s really not.

There’s no way to say this without sounding racist, but she’s kind of right. I don’t agree with the way she said what she did. I go to a university 45 minutes away from UCLA and this isn’t the first time I’ve heard comments like this, even including from my own school. I don’t have any personal issues against Asians and I lived with an Asian girl for two years, but I can just see what she means. She said it way too harshly and included things she probably didn’t actually mean. This would probably be better suited for an angry rant to a friend face to face rather than a youtube video where everyone blows it out of proportion. She was obviously angry. If someone was doing that while I was studying for finals I’d be pretty damn angry, too.

This is only offending you because it’s video evidence. A lot of people say this stuff every day at colleges across the nation. The asians at Temple were really quiet though in the library.. they were there to study just like anyone else. It’s mostly just common areas where everyone hangs out that I noticed any type of cell use or loud talking…from anyone. If I had to pick a louder race/nationality at TU, I’d have to say black men and women were louder in the library than anyone else. I’m guilty of being an asshole in study areas though too, so I’m not singling out one race as the sole cause of any noise disruption.  I think this would be a really interesting study to do, though, across college campuses.

i know its terrible to generalize… but this is also very true in my school.

I think people are taking this video too seriously.
Although I agree that it was insensitive of her to bring up the natural disasters that has happened in Japan.  She could at least have a little more sympathy and understanding for those people.  However, there’s no need for billions of people on the internet to keep reposting this video everywhere and calling her names.  None of us are perfect. We all have at least once said something racist or stereotypical without even thinking twice about it, whether you admit it or not.
It’s really sad that most of this world has nothing better to do than become outraged by one girl’s thoughts.  She probably already learned her lesson, just let it go.

     I’m racist towards everyone equally and I’ve had and have friends from different cultures and colors of the rainbow and we talk a lot of shit.  That’s with friends.  She did it to pretty much millions of people she didn’t know.  “This is for the people I don’t know”.  I would never go up to a random Black or African American guy and ask him, “Does massah let you eat watermelon?”  That’s just asking to get shot in my face.  The point is she pretty much did that.  In the form of posting it up on a video and putting it on Youtube.  She pretty much said that to everyone who’s ever gone on Youtube.  If you want to argue that they’re thoughts, then keep them as thoughts, not a video that’s posted up for literally the world to see.

Watching it and posting it increases the hits, which, for all we know, may be this womans goal all along. Now adays, it’s pretty hard for negative press to be negative, considering what common cultural pursuits are(ie. fame, money-fame). So i would say that if it repulses you, the best thing to do would be to give it the silent treatment. There’s 7 billion people out there, plenty(unfortunately) have things to say that are unkind. We can focus on them, or put the spotlight on people who are doing the positive things ; )

UGGHHH, I saw this video just after the tsunami happened when someone posted a link to a website called Ignorant and Online, which documents awful things people have said on social networking sites.  It STILL drives me crazy watching it again.  This girl is seriously studying political science???  I desperately hope this idiot NEVER makes it into the political sphere.  Maybe if that tiny brain can handle paying attention in some classes, she will learn to stop being such a self-centered bigot.
