Amidst all the tragedy today, we can take one small point of comfort that YouTube star Maru the cat is safe in Japan, as posted on Maru’s website. Stay strong, Maru!

Who gives a fuck about an individual cat when hundreds of people are dead.
Even when I think my faith in humanity cannot possibly get lower, someone manages to make it vanish further.

@MoonFaeEyryan@xanga - Agreed

@MoonFaeEyryan@xanga - It’s unfortunate that hundreds of people are dead but when people put their lives at risk to save other animals too [whether it's just one or a hundred], my faith in humanity actually increases. It’s not just our Earth but it’s their Earth too and we typically fend for ourselves a lot better than most animals so when the human race helps out other animals, even if it’s just one, it still means something. At least for me it does. I’d be saving my animals before thinking about myself. It might sound stupid but I believe their lives matter just as much as mine does. But that’s just me. Obviously this cat is like a member of their family if they posted their gratitude.

I think it’s possible to care not only about the people that were hurt during the earthquake, but the animals as well. I’ve had both in my thoughts today…

@MoonFaeEyryan@xanga - I definitely see your point, but at the same time, one could take that further and say, “Who gives a fuck about this one particular tragedy when tons and tons of people die every single day, all over the world? Roughly 155,000 people, or one every five seconds, die every day, and we are all concerned just because the strongest earthquake to hit Japan in over 100 years happened this morning?”
But then, that’s not really how I feel, or maybe I’m conflicted because I cared enough about Maru to click to this post. It’s great that Maru is safe. I just hope that many other people are able to say the same for their beloved pets as well.

never heard of this cat until this blog. I looked it up on youtube and maru is famous for hiding in boxes and other containers
maru probably used his 6th sense powers to feel the waves of the quake before it hit, then hid safely inside of a disaster-proof bunker that he secretly built while the humans were busy checking their facebook.

@blackspiders@xanga - that’s a good point there…

Oh, good, at least with hundreds of people dead, this famous cat still made it out OK. That makes everything better.

@how_x_loverly@xanga - How do you know this cat was even at risk?! The majority of the country was just fine; the tsunami was confined to Northern Japan. As far as I can tell, this is just an update: “Thanks for your concern, our cat is fine.” No heroics notes.

who gives a damn about a cat when there are hundreds of people who are hurt or dying?

@SuburbanSweetheart - There was no way of really knowing. The caption just said, “Maru is safe. Thank you for worrying and praying.” So of course I assumed that they were affected somehow too. I was just making a point that Earth is just as much a home to them as it is to ours and that we should show some compassion for them like we do with each other. Many families probably have pets that they consider to be family members too. Forgive me if I show concern for animals too and not just the human race. I just believe in making sure animals are safe as well because their lives are just as big as ours. Just because we can do more doesn’t make them any less significant.

@how_x_loverly@xanga - I certainly have compassion for animals, but in cases like this, well, I always, always, ALWAYS care about humans more.

@SuburbanSweetheart - It’s understandable and that’s where we’ll kind of differ. I mean, I’m all for helping other humans in a time of need but I’m also for helping animals too just because we have the intelligence and ability to do more for them than they can for themselves sometimes. That’s just the way I am personally. I think all lives matter and the more we can save, the better.
