Today is Ash Wednesday, the start of the Christian liturgical observance of Lent. I’ve always kind of enjoyed going to church on Ash Wednesday; something about the morbidity of getting that swipe of ashes on my forehead and being solemnly reminded of my own mortality always resonated with me. Wow, I would have made a great Goth kid.
If you observe Lent, what are you giving up this year? I’m personally not doing Lent this year, but apparently tons of my friends are giving up Facebook and alcohol.

I havent observed it in a while either. I should give up pizza because I’m trying to lose weight but it’s hard because I study alot & I started working again so you want to eat something that doesnt take long to get/make. and as I type this there’s a side ad for Domino’s. SO CRUEL!!!

haha, giving up facebook? We’ll see how long that lasts

I haven’t participated in Lent since I was 11.
If I were to do it now, it would be for some self-serving purpose, rather than what is actually intended by the ‘season’.

For trivial things, I’m giving up cheeseburgers and Hot Fries, but in terms of something more serious, I’m going to do my best to give up selfishness.

I’m giving up excuses for not working out. Time to suck it up. I’ve never really done the “give something up for Lent” thing though. I just like Lent because I’m a church organist and I enjoy playing the more somber, dark music in minor keys, and Lent gives me a free ticket to play all of that kind of stuff because it’s appropriate rather than “depressing.”

Pretty much. Though I’m looking forward to Easter more then anything.

may i give up religion? lol, i am not religious and thus not giving anything up for lent.

People who use Lent as a way to “lose weight” or “slim down” don’t even know the true meaning behind the season.
I suggest going to a priest and asking him the true way to celebrate it. It’s not about giving up food; it’s about understand the suffering Jesus went through.

Soda. Quite frankly, I drink too much of it, and yet I can never seem to get enough of it. Therefore, I will not drink any until Easter.
This will also be more healthy for me, as I will be relying more on water and fruit juices to quench my thirst.

@irene0914 - Hey, you don’t have to be religious to celebrate Lent. That’s a little snotty.
I’m not religious, but I did celebrate Mardi Gras. Played some New Orleans jazz and wore my beads at the retirement home.

@bAbiiExxPiNay@xanga - No you don’t, but you’re not truly celebrating it if you’re only doing it to lose weight.
guest
I’m not participating, but a friend of mine is giving up pants.

I am not Christian so I do not celebrate Lent. If I want to give up something I do it for my own well being and when I am truly ready to do so. If you give something up only to go back to it I just find that to be a huge waste of time. But I do know the reason behind it and although giving up Facebook is nothing compared to the suffering Jesus may have went through I suppose I can respect the fact that at least some people may completely give up their vices for good as a result. Though I’m really not banking on it.

I don’t know if I’m going to give up anything. its annoying how lent has just become a “second new years resolution.”

I’m giving up Facebook too!
And to that snarky comment someone gave, I’m sure it is possible
The firefox add-on BlockSite should be helpful, too.

I’m giving up coffee and cutting down on my online time.
That was the end of that!
I was going to give up swearing but then my hard drive died on my computer earlier today so I swore just a couple times.

I’m giving up skipping class, as well as giving up different food items/dietary things one week each. One week no fried food, one week no dairy, one week little-to-no carbs (they’re nearly impossible to avoid with my diet), one week no sodas, and so on.
guest
i’m not Christian. so instead of giving something up, i’m going to try to incorporate something new into my life every week of Lent.

@irene0914 - I agree. I don’t celebrate lent, but I feel like it’s pathetic when people use it as an excuse to give up something bad in their life… junk food, alcohol… why can’t they just do that on their own and actually understand the meaning behind the holiday?
guest
Helllllllll no, probably couldn’t even if I tried. Religion is so pointless.

I love all the religion haters here:)

Orthodox don’t choose to give up whatever they choose. Well they could on top of fasting ( no dairy no meat- think there are few days that fish is allowed). I can’t realistically do this on campus food– I try to limit myself.

This article could have at least explained the purpose of Lent, and what it is connected to. It’s 40 days (minus 6 Sundays) before Easter. Easter is the POINT, PURPOSE and center of the Christian faith/or your belief in God, because He ROSE from the dead, He conquered death, and that gave us life, that we don’t deserve!
So with that in mind, it’s not a simple, “I’m going to give this up”, it’s a minute version of the huge sacrifice Christ made on the cross including the reference to His 40 days of fasting and temptation by Satan. Also, if you choose to, for ex. give up smoking, you need to replace it with something so another bad vice doesn’t fill that spot. If you’re giving up fast food, you need to fill yourself up on the REAL LIVING food that Christ provides through his “bread” + “living water”, AKA the bible..
I’m giving up my laziness, I know it’s prevented me from strengthening my faith with Christ, and growing progressively in Him, so I am waking up every day at 6AM, whether I sleep at 3am or midnight. It’s been hard so far, but ‘His strength is made perfect in my weakness”.

I’m giving up porn.
Ah, who am I kidding? Life’s too short. I’m gonna enjoy it.
No guilt. No shame. No remorse.

I’m giving up giving up.

I’m giving up lottery scratch off tickets. Silly, I know, but my boyfriend works at a gas station and sometimes I go up to visit him and use scratch off tickets as an excuse for spending time there… Having an extra couple dollars in my pocket every week will be nice.
