LOL: Quite possibly the mother of all virtual acronyms. It accompanies almost every phrase even if it’s unnecessary, irrelevant or inappropriate.
BRB: Essential. I remember an instance where I was instant-messaging a cute boy until he sent me a ‘brb.’ However, I was unaware of the ‘be right back’ message and continued to rant for about half an hour. Until he returned and I had to endure the uncomfortable explanation of ‘he was going to be right back.’
TTYL: Ouch. Almost the equivalent of ‘Yeah, I’ll call you tomorrow.’
: ) : Even Microsoft automatically recognizes the symbol. Apparently, now you’ll need this to operate computer software and be on the look-out because it might be your next resume accessory.
HMU: Can’t forget ‘hit me up.’ Since you can’t follow each text or FB status with ‘I’ll patiently be awaiting your reply,’ HMU will have to suffice in a friendly and playful manner.
GTG: Read it. Understand it. Leave it. This acronym can only be followed by a reply from the sender unless after a couple cocktails you waive this rule then you’re on your own, girlfriend.
-_- : Maybe one of the newer emoticons. If you haven’t caught on: picture the underscore as a pair of lips and the dashes as disappointed eyes. Interpretations may vary.
OMG: NOSHEDI-ENT! C’MON. If you don’t know this one, invest in a cell phone already.
FML: This one spices up any expression with a hint of naughtiness. It is also adds a pinch of hilarity to a screwed up situation.
<3: You may have a date with this one so pay close attention. If this right-shifted heart follows any flirty text feel free to reply with HMU, or immediately. However, if it follows any acquaintance’s Facebook status it may just be decoration and feel free to disregard (with this emoticon: -_-).
Now that you’ve downloaded the essentials, let your thumbs tap wild! Cheers!

I honestly didn’t know “HMU.” I’d rather type out words anyway
Love emoticons, acronyms not so much.
guest
“ttyl” isn’t really a blow-off, at least when I use it. My friends and I will use it when we’re going to class or have to leave for whatever reason and “brb” isn’t really appropriate. “hmu” is new to me though.
guest
I’ve never heard of “HMU”
&& GTG
.-.
guest
What? You left out the most common acronym of all: PW (which stands for PoosyWhistle, obv).
sunflower / 294 posts
i hadn’t seen HMU until now…
guest
@thepsychoticraccoon@xanga - I got a “ttyl” blow-off last night, actually. Someone asked if I was a cokehead, and I replied no, I’d never done anything beyond weed. Her next reply:
“ok. you’re boring me. ttyl.” (and she goes offline)
If only I were a cokehead, I would be more interesting…?

Dude, the underscore smilies ( -_- , e_e , ._. ) have been around since my days on neopets seven years ago. If it’s new, texts have just been slow to catch on to the internet’s wells of geekery.
Other than that, I feel like “smh” has had a rapid rise in popularity, if only among my facebook friends. Never heard of “hmu,” though.
guest
@poosywhistle@xanga - NICE. I guess it depends on how you use it. I’ve just never personally seen it as a blow-off thing, lol.
guest
People still use things like gtg, hmu, ttyl and fml? We’re not 12, ladies. Things like brb are okay when you’re in a hurry, but I’d still rather type out the three short words.
lily / 5148 posts
@TequilaKisses@xanga - Agreed. I’m not a big fan of acronyms…>.> I still type out my words instead of using acronyms most of the time.
sunflower / 339 posts
Use all of them a lllllooooottt.

fml this was a waste of time.

that dog looks like he has human eyes while wearing glasses…so creepy that it is adorable
I never heard of hmu either.
and this emotion face…(-_-)<^> means f*** off. the <^> represents the middle finger.
guest
Never heard of HMU. I used to type g2g instead of gtg. Now I just say “gotta _________ bye!” I only use 4 acronyms: LOL, LMAO, OMG, WTF. (:
guest
I like this one ¬¬ haha, love it
guest
hmu and smh are so fucking annoying. nearly EVERYONE on fb uses them now =_= it was fine before, but now it’s just overkill.
anyways, i just type out my words, unless im running out of characters in a text message (which rarely happens) or i have to type in a rush
sunflower / 302 posts
@stephx4@xanga - Preach it! That site used to be my life. I cannot believe that it was nearly a decade ago that I was bilge dicin’ fool.
guest
Never heard of HMU. You forgot SMH, though. Love that one.
hydrangea / 54 posts
@soulfuric - Its so crazy. I actually just went on the website…just to see if it was even still a website…and everything is changed! The neopets don’t even look like how I remember them! WTF is it just me or did they actually really change in appearance ?! *sigh*
guest
@ask_ashleyyy@xanga - You know, people mistake me for Charlie Sheen all the time… in all seriousness, did I miss something? Did he die or why is he suddenly on every magazine cover?
guest
Don’t forget “ho,” which is short for “hold on.” i got pretty mad at my friend, who i thought was calling me a “ho,” then ditching me.
Oops.

What’s SMH? That’s the one I see all the time that I don’t know.
guest
I think she was trying to put HMU out to a wide audience so she could take credit for coming up with it. ‘Cause yeah, I’m an internet fiend and I’ve never heard of that one.
guest
i never did HMU i always just said LMK for “let me know”
daisy / 603 posts
these are so played out. lol is used when people don’t know what else to say & they’re not even laughing. brb maybee, but the rest of them.. no way.
my dad created his own acronym—> FAF funny as fuck. we use it constantly & it’s hilarious!
guest
That dog is so goddamn cute with it’s itty bitty t-rex arms. I’m gonna go cuddle my corgi-mix now… and maybe make her act like a t-rex. RAWRRRR.
guest
Lol, I’m a big fan of lol and omg
guest
i usually type things out. although, i do use “lol” but not as much as i used to. i’ve managed to type “haha” much more often. for some reason i say “brb” quite frequently and i say “omg” every once in a while when i’m teasing someone for being overly appalled about something. i definitely use plenty of emoticons.
they help convey emotion. i must say i like using the broken heart [ </3 ] almost as much as using the regular heart. but some people don’t get it and just say i’m doing the heart wrong. haha
guest
ahhh the picture of that dog is so cute!
guest
Why is this on Lovelyish?…
guest
Parents must also know that “WTF” does not stand for “Welcome to Facebook”.
guest
i still don’t know the meaning of FML!!!
will somebody tell me already!!!!

@interludeB@xanga - people put it on facebook all the time. I’m like ‘idk wat that means’.. Than it hit me one day & I felt dumb =/

HMU is new to me…

1999 called. They want their online revelations back.
daffodil / 1615 posts
@poosywhistle@xanga - Hahaha no he didn’t die, he just went on a huge coke binge with porn stars and then just kinda spiraled out of control. All of this “WINNING” and “tiger blood” stuff is from when he called into a radio station earlier last week and went on an eighteen-minute rant saying a bunch of random shit. But he passed his drug tests, so now we all know that he is legitimately insane.
Anyway, WhatWouldTylerDurdenDo has a few good posts about Mr. Sheen which are pretty funny. Unfortunately they took down the post with the 18-minute rant, but the other ones are pretty good.
guest
HMU is new to me
guest
Yeah… never used HMU. I’d just say “call me” lol.
What’s SMH? I keep seeing that everywhere
guest
@merquryd@xanga - this is definitely a new trend indeed…
guest
@cryholy@xanga - SMH stands for “shaking my head”. It’s actually pretty old. I started using it at around 16 and I’m 24 in June. I guess it’s just now becoming widespread, though.
guest
@AznFier@xanga - yea that HMU thing, I don’t think I would ever use it. It sounds like a university acronym. Like “Hi, I went to Harry Miller University. Go HMU!”
guest
I haven’t used most of these since I was 13 with my first computer (Windows 97, bby).
HMU was news to me. I’m all for some cutesy emoticons, but the abbreviations… they make my skin crawl.
dahlia / 2103 posts
Ok, I was hoping this one would be on here but it wasn’t, so I’ll make an ass of myself and ask: what in the hell does “FTW” stand for? I have heard varying definitions and just wondered what is actually correct.
I try not to use any of them except for
and FML because FML applies to me a lot of the time, unfortunately. Like yesterday: I locked my keys in my car at a funeral where I was supposed to play and my piano music was in the car too. While I was waiting for the locksmith, an old man backed into my car with his Buick. Then it started raining. FML!!!!!
guest
I despise acronyms and abbreviations. I see no point. The only one I use is the heart to really close friends if I’m really thankful for something.
guest
Don’t have a cell phone, really don’t need one. My landline is more than sufficient for my phone needs.
guest
you forgot smh (shaking my head). its very similar to -_- and I use it all the time!
guest
@janusfiles@xanga - What?! I never heard of that before. Is that possible? & what the hecks a landline?
guest
@BeautifulB_227@xanga - Landline = non-cellular phone. And I don’t talk on the phone all that much (at least partially because I have a stuttering problem), so a cellphone for me would be an unneeded expense. Believe it or not, you can actually get along quite well without a cellphone.
guest
‘-_-’ is new?
I hate it when people use “smh”, it annoys me so much.
guest
no lmao/lmfao…? lol my mom even knows lol/omg.. those were kinda unnecessary.
guest
@janusfiles@xanga - maybe she was being sarcastic.
guest

i’ve never heard of HMU….everything else i have
guest
i sort of stopped using acronyms after aim fizzled out (does anyone still use THAT?) except for ‘lol’ and ‘omg.’ i’m much more of an emoticon user, especially the japanese ones: -_- ^_^ ^_~ o_O O_O >_> T_T those are all my faves lol.
