LOL: Quite possibly the mother of all virtual acronyms. It accompanies almost every phrase even if it’s unnecessary, irrelevant or inappropriate.

BRB: Essential. I remember an instance where I was instant-messaging a cute boy until he sent me a ‘brb.’ However, I was unaware of the ‘be right back’ message and continued to rant for about half an hour. Until he returned and I had to endure the uncomfortable explanation of ‘he was going to be right back.’

TTYL: Ouch. Almost the equivalent of ‘Yeah, I’ll call you tomorrow.’

: ) : Even Microsoft automatically recognizes the symbol. Apparently, now you’ll need this to operate computer software and be on the look-out because it might be your next resume accessory.

HMU: Can’t forget ‘hit me up.’ Since you can’t follow each text or FB status with ‘I’ll patiently be awaiting your reply,’ HMU will have to suffice in a friendly and playful manner.

GTG: Read it. Understand it. Leave it. This acronym can only be followed by a reply from the sender unless after a couple cocktails you waive this rule then you’re on your own, girlfriend.

-_- : Maybe one of the newer emoticons. If you haven’t caught on: picture the underscore as a pair of lips and the dashes as disappointed eyes. Interpretations may vary.

OMG: NOSHEDI-ENT! C’MON. If you don’t know this one, invest in a cell phone already.

FML: This one spices up any expression with a hint of naughtiness. It is also adds a pinch of hilarity to a screwed up situation.

<3: You may have a date with this one so pay close attention. If this right-shifted heart follows any flirty text feel free to reply with HMU, or :) immediately. However, if it follows any acquaintance’s Facebook status it may just be decoration and feel free to disregard (with this emoticon: -_-).

Now that you’ve downloaded the essentials, let your thumbs tap wild! Cheers!
