Yep, that’s Beyonce. The singer took part in a photo shoot for the French magazine L’Officiel while wearing blackface makeup to darken her skin.
Blackface has been historically controversial because of its roots as a technique used to mock African-Americans in 19th-century stage shows. The magazine defends itself, saying Beyonce voluntarily wore the makeup:
Far from the glamorous Sasha Fierce, the beauty posed for the magazine with amazing fashion designers clothes, but also in a dress created by her mother. [It is] A return to her African roots, as you can see on the picture, on which her face was voluntarily darkened.”
Watch the video from the shoot below. Do you think Beyonce’s makeup is offensive?

First off i dont consider this black face. Black face back in the day was not the same color as actual african americans. It was literally black i believe which we are not. I dont find it offensive one bit and i being black or the various shades of brown that we actually are, i like it. It reminds me of people who are literally from Africa. The ones with the really dark satiny skin and beautiful smiles.

if they same people who aren’t offended by this were offended by a white woman wearing it, i’ma be pissed. lol. i think it’s silly, but i think a lot of fashion crap is silly.

This is old news. I guess she got bashed before because she had a dark face but her body was light.

If she’s not offended by wearing it, why should I be?
guest
Wow I’m so offended, how dare she!
guest
Well I think it looks silly because it doesn’t match the rest of her skin. I don’t think it’s offensive though because she’s already dark just not that dark. xD

This article summed it up best.
@mashroob@xanga - I agree.

The difference between what she is wearing and “black face” is that her make-up looks natural, as if she actually were that dark skinned. “Black face” was a term used to describe when a white person would imitate black stereotypes which were not true by covering their face with lamp black, or the soot which gathered on a lamp globe after burning it. The black face they used was actually black, not a dark brown skin tone. Another part of “black face” is that it insinuates that a performance is being presented with that as the costume. “Black face” was more of a performance style than anything. I wouldn’t consider what she is wearing to be “Black face”, first of all because she is actually black, and second of all because it is more likely to be an artistic choice for a photo shoot. Artistically, I think the contrast between her lighter body and darker face is beautiful. It seems to send the message that she is proud of her African heritage, not that she wishes to make fun of it.

Why not get a person that’s actually that dark?
guest
At least she’s proud of her heritage and where her family came from. I think she is embracing her roots and wants the world to embrace and appreciate this part of her as well. We should all embrace who we are!

I agree with the others that said there is a difference between using a realistic skin tone and black face. Also, black face was intended to make fun of black people. I don’t think Beyonce’s shoot, nor any of the other shoots where a model is made to look like a different race is meant to make fun of the race the model is depicting.

I think it’s stupid that she felt that she had to darken her complexion in order to get in touch with her African roots. Dumbest thing I’ve heard in awhile, actually. Stupid girl lol

@pianomusicchick@xanga - thank you! worded perfectly

not offensive.

No its not. I like it it looks pretty cool on her.

Beyonce isa beautiful black woman …she should have maybe dona a all over body tanner.
than itwouldn’t have been such a big fuss.

@MissLady2012 - I agree. She wasn’t thinking when she made this photo shoot, because Africa is a CONTINENT not a country and, there are many different countries and races of people on that continent. Many different skin types and colors.
Maybe Beyonce was just being conceded and trying to say that she looks good no matter if she looks as dark as possible or as white as possible.

I don’t think people should be any more offended by a change in skin color than they should be by a change in hair color.

No. She probably just wanted to experience having darker skin. It’s curiousity, and just whatever. Also it’s not quite the same as the black-face minstrels as she’s 1) already black, just not THAT black lol and 2) she isn’t mocking anyone, she’s just doing a beauty shoot with darker skin
Was that black/white show racist just because they used make up to switch roles and see life from the other side? No. No that’s the opposite of the creator’s intention so please, stop trying to generalize everything.

She looks better within the range of her natural complexion though… I mean, because it’s natural. I looove natural. Haha like, if you’re a blonde and go to dirty blonde, that’s cool, it’s within that natural range, but if you’re black haired and go blonde instead of like dark brown, it’ll take some getting used to because it’s out of your natural range. That isn’t to say you can’t play with your looks, there is NOTHING wrong with playing with your looks.

Did you know that the people behind the scenes are darker skinned? She did not choose to do her makeup that way, they did. While she agreed to let herself be made up that way, it was not her idea. Her makeup was not that way for the whole shoot, either.
