Like they say, there are dangers with tampons, but they should be safe to wear any time when you have your period, depending on how many hours you use it. Tampons have been one of the greatest discoveries for me! I always use them now. They make my period days (and nights) a lot better. So yes, I use them at night and during the day.
guest
i would think if you keep track of your hours and make sure to take it out AND NOT SLEEP IN! I would double pack it(tampon but wear a pad) so at 6 in the morning(just about 6 hours of sleep) i’d wake up and quickly take it out in the bathroom and not have to worry about unraveling a stupid pad, and i’d go back to sleep for a little bit. It helps A LOT! because not everyone can sleep standing up haha.
guest
I do on nights when I’m really heavy (like night 1 and 2) and every night after that I don’t need any protection so I just use a liner in case.
daffodil / 1615 posts
@wildchildofthebluemoon@xanga - Yeah same here. I’m not really worried about anything bad happening. I’ve been doing it for years
guest
Yes, but I have only done it a few times. I felt so queasy and I was in some kinda pain where I cold sweatet a lot. Oh and I got gassy,
guest
Hell yeah. Put a fresh one in before bed, take it out when you wake up. As long as you don’t sleep for fifteen hours you’re fine.
daisy / 727 posts
I have a friend who got TSS from leaving one in overnight. Definitely not something I’m going to do anymore. I don’t know how long overnight it was, but regardless I’m really not down for getting out of bed early just to change it anyway haha.
daisy / 597 posts
Don’t use them at all. nope nope nope
guest
rose / 853 posts
Um yeah. Every time. Pads don’t provide much protection when you’re lying down. Plus I hate the feeling of pads anyway. Like I’m sitting in a puddle of blood. Sorry, gross…
guest
No. I wouldn’t. I mean, I’ll deal with pads at night. You sleeping isn’t sexy. :/ its not like i’m going to be wearing some sexy ass panties to bed while i’m feeling gross. (Sorry thats the truth) Half of my reason is because of TSS, scares me. although its rare I still wouldn’t wear a tampon to bed. Plus I tend to sleep longer then I should. x___X;
guest
I leave mine in all night ALL the time. I only sleep ten hours maximum, so it’s never a problem for me. I cannot sleep in pads, so.
lily / 5148 posts
You can but I don’t. I always switch to pads before going to bed.
@MyFaire@xanga - Don’t worry.. TSS scares me too. I think I waste more tampons than I should because of that fear.
guest
NO!!!!!! What a silly thing to do.
guest
If you use the lowest absorbency possible and don’t sleep more than 6 hours or so, there’s no harm in it. I can’t sleep with just a pad and not wake up feeling like I’m on the set of a crime scene on CSI.
guest
@MyFaire@xanga - I was thinking about the oversleeping thing too, since I tend to. Probably better to be safe than sorry.
guest
i’ve left a tampon in over night, twice; and got extremely sick each time. talking vomiting, insane body aches, cold sweats, etc. i definitely would not recommend it (they were regular flow)
guest
I do. I’m not afraid of TSS. My periods feel like death anyways, lol.
magnolia / 1369 posts
I’m worried about oversleeping the maximum six hours so no. The only times I’ve ever done it was when I was stranded and had to sleep over a friends house.
guest
Supposedly the duration a tampon is left in isn’t as important for your risk of TMI but the absorbency of it.
That being said: yes I do leave it in overnight. New one right before sleep and out when I first wake up.
guest
gross. i regret subscribing to you, lovelyish. haha just kidding
rose / 802 posts
I use them overnight. No one gets TSS anymore.
guest
I’ve left one in for 8 hours before and nothing happened to me.
sunflower / 290 posts
no no no! TSS can and does happen, but you can also get yeast infections and other infections of the vagina from it because bacteria breed in that closed off environment
rose / 980 posts
I never wear pads anymore… haven’t in years. So, yes I leave a tampon in over night and sometimes longer than 6 hours. Cars are way more dangerous than tampons!
guest
I’m not a fan of it. I usually switch to pads overnight.
guest
No, I’m too afraid of getting TSS, so I sleep with a pad at night.
It’s not the most comfortable when I first put it on, but it quickly goes away & I definitely don’t notice it when I’m falling asleep/asleep.
guest
Honestly, there’s the fear of TSS, you’re not supposed to leave it in over night. That being said, I have done it, only if I plan on getting up early-ish. I’ll double up with a pad. I absolutely cannot stand any leaks, whatsoever, it bothers the hell out of me and I feel so gross…. so yeah.
guest
I try not to wear tampons when I’m sleeping even though pad are worst. Nowadays I try to use a moon cup or a diva cup. I feel safer than using tampons.
guest
I wear them to bed and I sleep a long time! I’m fine. TSS has only been from super tampons so if you’re regular then you’ll be fine. Just put a new one in before bed and take it out as soon as ya get up. Or if you get up in the night to use the bathroom change it then.
guest
On the heavy days, I use the lowest absorbency that would be reasonable and then use a liner as a backup. If I didn’t, I’d be getting up every few hours. Pads just don’t offer enough protection to make me feel safe lying down for seven hours.
orchid / 149 posts
Yes. Aren’t they approved for 8 hours? I’ve even left them in longer. TSS is incredibly rare.
guest
Depends…I hate wearing pads sometimes because they feel like diapers so I might wear a tampon in with a light liner. But some nights my damn vagina is just tired of tampons going in and out so I just wear a fat ass pad.
guest
i do every night and have for years. Pads disgust me.
and nothing has ever happened to me. I sleep a long time too.
guest
I’m okay with leaving one in overnight when for the third or fourth day, but I tend to switch to a pad when my flow is heaviest. I don’t pay much attention to how long I leave them in during the day, though.
guest
I’ve left one in for 15 hours… nothing happened to me. It’s a problem when you don’t use the right size. Use the right size, no TSS.
sunflower / 432 posts
I only use tampons overnight. I’ve used the diva cup sometimes during the day, but not at night because it leaks. Pads leak all the time.
guest
Often. many times though, i would use it after my nightly shower, then go to sleep, and remove it so that’s not that many hours… i prefer at night because that’s when its harder to keep the mess under control… lol just saying.
guest
I do it. TTS is extremely rare and usually comes when you leave tampons in for DAYS not just sleeping with them in. As long as you put one in right before bed and take it out right when you wake up, you’re good to go!
sunflower / 370 posts
Love my cup.
guest
Yes. Much more comfortable than a pad.
guest
most TP are 8hrs. so you can leave them in over night as long as you change it in the morning. I usually do.
guest
Yes. I am a tampon-only type of woman.
To be quite honest, I’m surprised that more of you do not. I think pads are a giant pain in the arse.
guest
@sassypenguin@xanga - Ditto!
Sorry, but I’ve never put in a tampon and set a timer to make sure I didn’t leave it in more than 6 hours.
I leave them in until they need changed. When your periods are as long as mine you stop treating it like a princess. I try not to leave them in for more than 12 hours , but I have left one in 24 hours once. And I didn’t die (gasp!)
guest
I’ve left them in for a long long time and I’ve been fine. I never use pads anymore. tampons ftw!! lol!!
guest
i have this uneasy feeling of using tampons. i REALLY want to since im going off to college soon
guest
Ehhhh, I do. I know you can get TSS but I don’t sleep for longer than 8 hours anyway. Hell, I’d be lucky if I got that much sleep in one night!
sunflower / 447 posts
It’s just not a good idea, so no I never would. TSS sounds scary, and really, I’m sleeping for fuck’s sake who cares if I look good or not? Also, I’m a sleepaholic so 10-12 hours is normal for me to be zonked out drooling on the pillow not caring if I need to swap things out or not lol.
daisy / 727 posts
I’m surprised at the amount of people saying they think TSS is rare or only happens due to the absorbency rates. I’ve known a few girls who have gotten TSS and they all told me they were using regulars. I had TSS once and I was using a regular and I hadn’t been using it very long. Anyway, I guess it has to happen to you in order for it to hit home for some people haha.
guest
As long as you don’t leave it in there for longer than the recommended time for tampons (I think It’s 8 hours?) then you’re fine. Just be careful, TSS CAN happen.
guest
I switch to pads at night, unless I forget. I prefer pads to tampons though, so I wear pads more often anyways.
guest
I honestly use them overnight. Otherwise, I can’t sleep because I’m too worried about…well, you know. It helps.
guest
HELL no. If I don’t want to wear a pad, I’ll use an Instead cup; otherwise, I just use an overnight maxi with wings and wear granny panties I don’t care about.
guest
Well, the Tampax package says its fine as long as you don’t sleep more than 8 hours (the same tampon should never be in for more than 8 hours, no matter what time of day). I usually sleep about 7-ish hours and I use a fresh one right before bed and change it as soon as I wake up. As long as you’re following the directions properly it should be fine. Ever since I got used to using them overnight, I just can’t use pads anymore. Feels like I’m sleeping in a puddle of blood. Ick.
What I wonder is if most women keep them in while showering. I’ve heard of some doing that, but why wouldn’t you take it out and properly clean yourself? Not doing so just seems SO very unhygienic.
guest
@beautiful___nightmare@xanga - PSH My periods are so horrible they barely last 2-3 hours during the day so at night I’m honestly not that worried about it. I actually use a tampon and a pad to stop from having accidents. Do you think I really care that I’m leaving it in a couple extra hours? Hell no.
guest
I wear tampons more often at night then I do during the day. Sorry bitches, but I am not gonna have my asscrack fillin’ up with blood all night, half of which has caked by the time I wake up. Been there, done that. Many times. Each time was excruciatingly painful. Besides, I have shit to do in the morn’, thus would rather shower at night.
guest
i wear them overnight. usually i use supers during the nighttime, that allows me to sleep in. i put one in right before i sleep and i change it when i wake up. i’ve never had an issue and i’ve done it for years. do you take naps while wearing a tampon? go on long car rides or sit through hours of class? it’s the same thing give or take a couple hours.
however if you’re worried about it, don’t do it just because of whatever reasons you might read on here or hear about elsewhere. if you’re uncomfortable to do so, you won’t get the sleep you’re wanting until you feel like you don’t have to be concerned about TSS for a nights worth of sleep.
if you do, do it just make sure you don’t forget about it in the morning, and go by how your flow is & use the right size tampon.
guest
i leave them in overnight when im on my rags, never had TSS. pads are dirty, they’re just like a nappy, ick. tampons all the way!
orchid / 209 posts
I can’t sleep with out tampons. If I wear pads I’m restless and toss and turn all night because I worry that I’ll leak. So I don’t get a good night’s rest without a tampon while on my period.
guest
@SuburbanSweetheart - That is so not true, I know someone who has to go for dialysis twice a week because TSS destroyed her kidney
orchid / 110 posts
i’ve left them in for 12 hours plus…….probably not the best habit to be in…..
hydrangea / 89 posts
The only time I do so is if I run out of pads or my flow is so heavy that a pad would cause me to wake up with blood everywhere. I have thought about buying Depends for overnight protection because it is no fun when I turn onto my back and then have a mess everywhere (those overnight pads don’t always do the job). Anyway, I usually only get 7 hours of sleep, so I’m not afraid of TSS.
guest
The instructions that come with tampons usually say you can leave tampons in for about 4-8 hours. I used to keep them in overnight, but now I just wake up once in the middle of the night to change it out – just feel safer that way. I wear regular absorbency. It’s annoying, but I only have to do it about two nights per cycle. Until I can get the hang of the DivaCup, this is how it’s going to be.
guest
i always wear tampons. i mean i have pads just in case, but they’ve been in my cabinet for like a year now lol. i sleep in tampons too. i used to use pads when i slept, but it doesn’t give good protection at all so i decided to just wear tampons while i slept for like 2 years now, and nothing has happened. i sleep for about 8-10 hours a night. just put a new tampon in before you go to sleep.
guest
i usually wear them overnight. i feel like if i wear a pad ill leak and not land on the pad eek! so far i’m still okay.
guest
I keep mine in. If you do, just make sure it’s a fresh one before you go to bed.
guest
I do, I always do.
People say it is dangerous, but from what I’ve been told from my mom (she is a nurse), it is actually fine to wear tampons at night because your metabolism is slower at night, hence less blood and what not so wearing a tampon at night is actually fine as long as you take it out at night.
guest
No, but I don’t use tampons.
guest
I’ve never NOT worn tampons overnight. In fact, I started wearing them cuz I was so sick of pads while I was trying to sleep.
guest
@juicyy_loove@xanga - Is THAT why? I’ve noticed over the years that at night my flow is much, much lighter, while “feminine care products” marketed as “overnights” were supposed to absorb more. I thought it was just something my period in particular did.
sunflower / 447 posts
I don’t use them. Health class and possible infections have scared me off.
Overnight pads + good fitting panties work really well. And you don’t have to worry about sleeping in
guest
I’ve been using tampons for under a year I sleep with them in its fine as long as you change it as soon as you wake up!! xx
guest
UM HELLO? Has anyone heard of TSS (Toxic Shock Syndrome?) Theres a hugeass warning label on the box that says DO NOT WEAR FOR MORE THAN 8 HOURS. Unless you have an alarm set to wake up in exactly 8 hours from when you went to sleep don’t do it.
And how bad is TSS?
Um let’s just say you’d have an easier time surving breast cancer than surviving TSS. TSS is deadly in nearly 50% of cases, and is often reoccuring.
Please stop burying your heads in the sand! The number one cause of TSS is keeping in tampons too long!
guest
Yep, I do. My body wakes me up when it gets so full it leaks. Every single time. So I’m not worried. I put a fresh one in before bed, if I’m really heavy I wake up in the middle of the night to change it, and change it again in the morning.
It’s not a big deal, you just can’t be stupid about it. I personally can’t wear pads anymore, they’re like diapers and I can’t stand the feeling of blood flowing out of me like niagara falls, and I sleep SO much better with a tampon in than my sleepless nights with a pad worrying if it was going to be so much to go through my panties and wreck them and my bed.
guest
@SuburbanSweetheart - people seem to be ignorant to the fact that it is rare. It’s not going to happen 100% if you leave a tampon in overnight or over 8 hours. It’s a rare complication that CAN happen but is not very likely to happen, especially if you use regular absorbency and change often.
You CAN sleep 8 hours a night with a regular in and change it in the morning (and put in a fresh one before bed) and be absolutely fine. Many females do it, and touting “TSS” without the facts is just ignorant and fear-mongering.
TSS will happen more often (as rare as it is) in higher absorbencies than regular and for those people leaving it in for like, 12 hours.
guest
I usually do, but I’ll change it, no matter how long it’s been in, right before bed, and right when I wake up. I never sleep more than eight hours, and tampons have been proven safe for eight hours, so as long as you put a fresh one in and change it right when you wake up, it should be fine.
I mean, I’ve been doing this for almost six years, and I’ve never had any issues with it.
guest
All the time.. nothing bad happens. I think TSS is rare, I’ve never met anyone who had it happen to them.
guest
I use a diva cup so I don’t have to worry about TSS and I can leave it in all night.
guest
I do, usually only on heavy days. You probably shouldn’t for an extended period of time but during school I rarely sleep for longer than 5 hours at a time so it’s not too bad. As long as you aren’t sleeping for 10 hours there shouldn’t be an issue, lol.
I think that for people who have reactions from tampons have them regardless, and they’re all individual to the person, so if you try it once and you’re fine, there’s probably no need to worry.
peony / 1 posts
I would rather risk TSS than wear a pad. Gross. Who wants to walk around all day with all of that mess up against your body? It’s unhygienic, and frankly, sweaty and disgusting, unless you carry moist wipes around with you all of the time. Not only that, pads are highly uncomfortable, it’s like wearing a diaper. I’ve been using tampons for 10 years, during the day I change them every few hours, but at night, I’m not going to set my alarm just to make sure I change it every 6-8 hours. If I sleep 10-12 hours on a weekend, so what. I’ve never had a problem, and honestly, TSS is so not as common as it once was.
guest
the thing is though, the dangers of wearing a tampon for too long is that the risk of TSS is increased.
yeah, that never happens.
like never.
i sleep with a tampon, well i did before i got a hormone iud and now i dont get my period at all.
guest
girl, i wear tampons over night. every night that i have my period. everyone reacts differently to tampons, whether they leave it in for 6 or more hours. you gotta think… try it a few times. or maybe even once. and if you like it… do it again… everyone is scared of tss but dont let that scare you out of trying it atleat once hun.
guest
I always sleep in tampons and I’ve never had a problem. I never really sleep for more than eight hours though.
