Denise’s post on 11 fashion accessories that make any guy hotter got me thinking about how I’d want the ideal man to dress. Which is not to say that clothes are super duper important when it comes to dating, or that I would bludgeon any guy I date into wearing what I want him to wear, but in the spirit of fantasy, this is how I’d like my dream dude to dress.
I’m trying to think of a term for it: Vintage with a twang? Retro rockabilly? Modern day speakeasy? Well-dressed hipster? Prepster?
The style includes things like tailored vests, ties, button-downs with rolled up sleeves, skinny pants with oxfords or boots, open cardigans, suspenders, fedoras. Hair is usually short, with a little bit of scruff, or sideburns. They don’t have to be ultra skinny, but I think it looks best on guys who are on the leaner side.
It just so happens that most guys who can pull off this look are musicians, like Mumford and Sons (above). In case you can’t tell, I also have a major thing for musicians.
Jack White in his hot, short-hair, retro-wardrobe phase, not his creepy facial hair mid-career White Stripes phase.
The Avett Brothers rock their vests.
John Paul White (also, a Johnny Depp lookalike) from The Civil Wars.
Does anyone else love it when guys dress like this, or am I an anomaly? Also, if you are a dude who’s reading this and you dress like this, you know how to find me…

@Jessica - Wow, I’m so jealous! I have seen them live 4 times (first in 2007!)…a 5th coming up in April. If you haven’t seen their live show, you really need to. Anyways, I agree with you, the look is totally hot

I love that plaid cardigan in the first picture!
Ezra Koenig is one of my favorite dressers, and I don’t know what to call his style….boyish hipster? College prepster? gahhh. I don’t know what to call styles either, so I usually just refer to the person and hope that whoever I’m talking to gets the reference. “JGL in (500) Days of Summer,” for instance.

LOVE! I’m so excited that you put The Avett Brothers on here…I adore them so much! I think this style is amazing, but I know my man would never try that, but it’s okay. Great post!

I like it in period movies, but I’m not sure how I’d feel about it in daily life. It’s definitely a performer’s look.

@MrsJenBean@xanga - Agreed

@MrsJenBean@xanga - yeah, I think if a guy were to put all of the elements together for an everyday look, like the hat, the suspenders, the old-timey pants and a bow tie, it would look costume-y. For daily life, I would hope they wouldn’t wear it all together. It looks good on stage though!

So, in short, in order for a man to be more attractive to you, he has to be a hipster?
High standards you’ve got there.
But to each their own.

Omg, I have SUCH a crush on Marcus Mumford. A big part plays into the way he dresses, and you know he’s a musician and has that british manly voice…sigh Waist coats are adorable! And while it is hipster-y, I think it has a bit of class in it because they dress well, it’s not like the hipster where they pretend to look like homeless people but spend $$$ on their clothes.

I WAS THINKING ABOUT THIS THE OTHER DAY. You and I are on the same page, same line, same letter. Jack White is so darn pretttttttty.

I love guys who dress like that. Love ‘em. There is a guy in the band Stephen Kellogg and the Sixers, the drummer, Boots Factor (Real name Brian Factor…) anywho. He use to dress in dress like shirts, vests and a nice fedora like hat. Reminded me of an Amish guy. Very hot, especially with the beard he had then.

maybe you should hang out at bluegrass festivals populated by younger people. best bet. It’s a little dangerously close to hipster for me, but i have to hand it to you- those guys look good.
