Do you ever find yourself running late to class because you can’t find your favorite pair of jeans? Or your lucky football jersey to show pride for your favorite team?

Here are a few tips to keep for an organized closet to make sure your favorite pair of jeans never goes missing again.

First, the most important aspect of any closet is having light to see what is in there. I have a closet with sliding doors so lighting has always been an issue. I bought a couple of those “touch lights.” You put a couple batteries inside and when you push on the dome, they light up. I hung these on nails throughout my closet so that I could see inside.

Next is keeping your closet organized to suit your own needs. A main factor in never finding pieces to wear is because of the placement of clothes in your closet. In order to fix placement of clothing is by grouping like items together. Group tops together, bottoms together, and then dresses in a separate category. These are three general categories to group all of your clothing. Of course, depending on your style you may have more or less categories. But these are the categories I use to start sorting my clothes.

Once you separate your clothing into those three categories then you can get into the particulars. I personally divide clothes into what occasion they are for. I keep all my gym clothes together, all my work clothes together, my going out clothes together, clothes to wear around the house, and then my clothes to wear to class. This way, then I know when I have somewhere to go where exactly to go to in my closet.

Being from the east coast where the weather has been crazy lately, I have an area devoted to scarves, hats, and gloves. Just so that once again I always know where to go when I need that baseball cap or wool scarf.

As far as scarves go, I always used to fold them. Then, they would be sliding around and could never keep in the pile I folded. I tried rolling them and hanging them on hooks. But hanging them on hooks they would get that annoying bump in the lighter weight ones.

To solve the problem, I took a hanger and folded the scarves over the bar in the hanger. This way I don’t get the bump from forcing it on a hook and they don’t slide off so that they are messy.

A major tip I’m working on personally in order to always know where my clothes are is folding laundry after I wash it. I tend to wash it and then anything that isn’t going to wrinkle immediately I leave in the hamper. This always adds to the stress of trying to find that certain shirt.

Depending on how your closet is laid out, you can arrange your tops. I keep tops towards the top of the closet, and then all my skirts and pants towards the bottom. This makes it easier to see what goes with what.

Lastly, my shoes are on the bottom and once again organized by the type of shoe. Therefore, the closet is organized from head-to-toe, literally, and everything can always be found at a moments notice.
