Gisele Bundchen is angering doctors and cancer experts with her latest statement that sunscreen is poison.
Says US Weekly:
“I cannot put this poison on my skin,” Bundchen — who has appeared in ad campaigns for Nivea Sun products — said at the launch of her own organic skin care range, according to the UK’s Daily Mail. “I do not use anything synthetic.”
Gisele says that instead of wearing sunscreen, she only tans before 8 a.m. in order to avoid sun exposure. Uh, so like, before the sun actually rises?
While chemicals aren’t the best choice for your beauty products, we’d argue that sunscreen is one of the most necessary! What do you think about Gisele’s argument?

maybe she needs to use organic sunscreen?

So just use organic sunscreen…

There are natural sunscreens out there. I haven’t tried one yet and even though I love natural foods and products I’m not going to idiotic enough to throw my porcelain skin outside without sunblock. It only takes a couple sunburns on a complexion like mine before all sorts of potentially dangerous growths start popping up.
guest
She means use organic sunscreen…way to twist her words.
guest
She is very right. Use natural SPFs. Chemical sunscreens can be very bad for your health.
guest
there are plenty of natural sunscreens out there. i don’t think tanning before 8 am is really tanning at all…

someone’s a bit snobby.

I need to look for natural sunscreen..not so bad for my skin. I can’t be out in the sun in the summer for too long myself.
guest
@ShimmerBodyCream@xanga - yeppers, I’d heard a lot of some of the biggest name brand sunscreens can actually be pretty bad for you.
The problem is, I’m just not sure what’s conspiracy theorist stuff going around the internet and what’s true. But until I’m more sure one way or the other, I don’t wear any sunblock.

smart lady.

I’m sure she’s right that organic sunscreen is far better, but that is a luxury that not all of us can afford. I hate it when celebrities say things like “Oh, this and this and this is bad for you, so I only use the organic kind grown in the sub-tropical deciduous forests of central Mexico harvested by the full moon and bottled in Sweden by people wearing white lint-free gloves.” Good for you, you can afford fancy organic specially-made shit. Not all of us can.
guest
hmm i wonder if it is written out of context lol
guest
nahh somehow it feels like she meant she wouldn’t wear sunscreen that wasn’t organic rather than none at all.
guest
I’m allergic to most sunscreens, they cause me to break out in rashes and hives
However, what she’s talking about is her organic sunscreen. This quote was taken so far out of context it’s insane…I wish people wouldn’t just focus on the negative but oh well. *shrug*
daisy / 501 posts
Uhh, I’m not even sure how to answer that one.
guest
Yeah, I’ve heard that sunscreen can actually be bad for you. I don’t wear it but I don’t go out in the sun either.
And she probably means that she gets her necessary sun exposure before 8 AM, when UV rays are weak and won’t damage your skin.
guest
@ShimmerBodyCream@xanga - Which ones are good for you? I’m gonna need to buy some when summer rolls along
sunflower / 370 posts
I would take what she says with a grain of salt. The article did say that she avoids exposure to UV rays after 8 am, not that she tans then, so I think that means that she gets her outdoors stuff done in the morning. Possibly the other things are taken out of context as well. Anyway, she doesn’t have the credentials for me to take her advice seriously (except for, maybe, beauty tips), but I’m not going to crucify her because she believes that sunscreen is bad for you. She’s a beautiful model, no more, no less.
guest
I think it’s stupid of her to say tan before 8am. wtf? it’s still the same sun.
The intensity of the sun rays may be different, but the effects are still the same.
I do agree with using organic sunscreen though. I suppose it’s better, but I just dont care about this organic shit at all. haha

@NikBv@xanga - You could go to the Cosmetic Safety Database and look up chemicals in sunscreens. They’re pretty legitimate.
sunflower / 403 posts
that’s crazy talk…i’ll take the synthetic stuff over the harmful UV rays of the sun
magnolia / 1042 posts
it’s not like i wear it often at all so i’m really not worried about it. what isn’t bad for you these days? smh.
guest
sunscreen is not bad for you.
maybe shes concerned because shes heard of titanium dioxide forming radicals on your skin after absorbing UV light and emitting it as heat (its what photocatalysts do) but, people who make the stuff are pretty smart, thy coat it with silica/alumina which react w/the free radicals and prevent anything harmful form happening to you (such as cancer)there are also tons of organic cyclic compounds in sunscreen that prevent skin damage from UV light so yes…there are some sythetic materials in there….but theyre good synthetic materials. i hope everyone doesnt jump on this and stop wearing sunscreen..
guest
She just wants us to look old quicker.
guest
so how does she protect her skin?
sunflower / 255 posts
I have read recently of studies into the titanium oxide or something in sunscreen being a carcinogen! but I don’t know… am I more like to get cancer from sun exposure or the ingredients in the bottle? I would like to try an organic sunscreen if I could get my hands on one!
guest
If sunscreen is poison, what is tanning?
.
guest
@individually_surveys@xanga - Right! This was annoying to read.
guest
I feel her statement has been taken WAY out of context. What she was more than likely referring too was using natural or organic sunscreens as opposed to our chemical ridden sorts.
guest
A great example of how beautiful people can be brain dead. Quite undesirable.
guest
Sunscreen was created by the government to make money. It causes cancer. I do not use it.
daisy / 658 posts
all things that are not organic, or even those that claimed to be organic but still have that 3% synthetics are “poison” by that logic. nothings really natural these days.
guest
Bet organic sunscreen is so expensive… but I would like to try some (it does exist right?!)
sunflower / 290 posts
yes, because when i want scientific information i turn to… models….
guest
Well all the other times that she goes out .. she’s exposed to radiation from the sun too even if it’s raining/snowing.. etc.
And she won’t be saying that when she gets skin cancer.
guest
She’s not saying that sunscreen is poison, but the chemicals in sunscreen are…and she’s almost right. They increase your chances of getting cancer. But those are the same chemicals in lotions, makeup and most beauty products.
sunflower / 432 posts
Wow, where do you live? Do you ever wake up before 8 am? The sun is definitely up hours before 8 am.
guest
i think she’s on crack .
period .
guest
mehh.. i don’t use sunscreen, either.
guest
I hate sunscreen, and I refuse to use it.
everyone has their own opinion about it
guest
damn girl u look like a man u need to grow some titters
but anyway the sun sucks, i like bein white, sun-screen 4 life nigga

Oxybenzone is bad for you, but it’s in most sunscreens. However, it’s not as bad as UV radiation. It’s the lesser of the two evils (much less evil, btw). I personally spend a lot of money on sunscreens without that particular ingredient, since it’s the most dangerous one. Titanium dioxide and avobenzone are the safest commercial sunscreen ingredients. Unfortunately, avobenzone degrades quicker than oxybenzone so you have to reapply it more often.
Oxybenzone is just highly reactive, and so it will absorb into your skin & cause some damage, BUT MUCH LESS THAN THE SUN’S RADIATION!
When I absolutely have to wear oxybenzone, I just make sure to wash it off after I’m out of the sun to assure it’s not on my skin longer than it needs to be.
guest
titanium oxide is a carcinogen… IF YOU INHALE IT OR EAT IT’S PURE FORM! haha. Just like pure oxygen will explode if exposed to air. Titanium oxides molecules are too big to go inside our skin, and so there is no danger from it unless you eat your sunscreen… & if you do, we have bigger problems. @sassij

LOL

Why doesn’t she mention natural sunscreen? They’re great! I use Caribbean Solutions SPF 25 and it’s biodegradable.

She’ll be all wrinkly and shizzle. Unless she has really good genetics.
I’m not risking it.

Poison>skin cancer
guest
it’s kind of uncommon to see people back home putting on sunscreen(unless you are uber white) but i have yet to hear of anyone getting skin cancer…strange being that it is a town of 9,000 people, we hear about EVERYTHING
and we are always exposed to the sun anyways.
i like spray sunscreen. dries fast, easy to put on, and doesn’t leave that gross oily crap in the water.
guest
She is a dumb model, Sunscreen = No Skin Cancer… even before the sun in up you should use sunscreen.
guest
I think it is good just to get a moderate amount of sunlight… and not bake in the sun to try to change your skin tone. If you have to be out in direct sunlight for hours, then yeah, use sunscreen.
guest
What’s her evidence that it’s poison? It irks me when people say stuff like “chemicals are bad for you” because basically everything is a chemical -_-’ I don’t use sunscreen, but I’d be hard-pressed to believe that they are bad for you. Most chemicals in sunscreen are inert (don’t react). As far as I know, sunscreens work because the active compounds in them are able to absorb electromagnetic energy of certain wavelengths, and those wavelengths correspond to UVA and UVB rays.
There’s nothing inherently better about “natural” chemicals compared to similar chemicals that are manufactured.

Dear Gisele, You can refuse to use whatever your little heart desires as long as you keep looking the way you do.

i looove her body.
