Last night at the 2011 Golden Globes, there were fashions and fancy pants galore. You know how we do at LoveBrownSugar – we have our faves and we have our SHAKING MY HEAD-worthy fashion fails. Below, find my Top 10 picks for the best and worst of the 2011 Golden Globes Red Carpet. Let me know if you agree…
10. BEST: Emma Stone
Calvin Klein was a recurring theme last night. I absolutely loved the minimalist, super sexy and sophisticated look that she rocked on the red carpet. The color looks amazing on her and her hair is simple yet chic.
9. WORST: Leighton Meester
Normally, you can’t go wrong with Burberry Prorsum, but in my eyes, Leighton just looks like she’s trying way too hard. The color washes her out and the shoulders are a bit overpowering. I wasn’t a fan.
8. BEST: January Jones
I was speechless when I saw this one. Contrary to popular belief, red on the red carpet is not always a faux pas, especially if you’re rocking a fierce Versace piece like this one! One word – flawless. The understated rosy lip is the perfect touch, not too cherry red and matchy. I also appreciate the Old Hollywood hair.
7. WORST: Natalie Portman
Now, I’m usually a huge fan of Natalie’s and an even bigger fan of the bold and beautiful celebs that grace the red carpet with baby pouches. I mean, a pregnant woman’s glow is unmatched. But this Viktor & Rolf dress definitely didn’t bring out the best in Natalie Portman’s look. I thought the red flower applique was way too distracting.
6. BEST: Angelina Jolie
Does she ever miss the cut for Best Dressed? This woman is divine in a perfectly fitted green Versace gown. I absolutely adored the shoulder detailing, the length, the fit and the fact that her amazing body shines through without her having to bare tons of skin. Flawless.
5. WORST: Michelle Williams
I adore Michelle’s blond pixie cut but the color and the pattern of this dress were a major fail for me. I’m all for a good floral print, but this one gives me frumpy over sophisticated. On top of that, the muted color in absence of color anywhere else (no bronzer, no bold lip?!) is a no-go.
4. BEST: Scarlett Johansson
ScarJo was an instant stunner in Elie Saab. Now this is the way to do a muted color but still have pop! She went with a gown that had detailing like tiered chiffon and sequins to balance out the lack of color. And that hair? Gorge! (Sidenote: I wish her makeup artist had slapped some concealer on that rainbow tattoo… )
3. WORST: Julianne Moore
I was sorely disappointed to see Julianne Moore in this Lanvin collection look. Don’t get me wrong, I love an exaggerated shoulder, but something just seems off about this silhouette on her. I also don’t think the color meshes well with her skin tone or hair.
2. BEST: Anne Hathaway
We don’t have to guess who put THIS look together. Giorgio Armani Prive has Rachel Zoe written all over it! I absolutely love the sequins, I love the shoulders, I love the unexpected bronze color and how everything works together so perfectly on Anne. Just stunning! The epitome of an awards show look.
1. WORST: Tilda Swinton
Stop the presses. When did it become ok to show up on the red carpet of the Golden Globes wearing a plain white oxford and a skirt? It looks like Jil Sander was constructing the dress from the ground up and once they hit the hips they said “Welp, we’re done!” so Tilda just popped on a white button-up for good measure. No bueno. If you’re going minimalist, throw on an earring, a bracelet, something!
What do you guys think? Which ones were your faves? Did I miss anyone? Sound off below!

Gotta agree with you on pretty much all of these. Emma and Anne especially look fantastic.
guest
I loved Anne Hathaway’s, but I can’t say I really liked ScarJo’s. Tilda Swinton has always been rather eccentric on the red carpet. But you forgot Olivia Wilde! She was my favorite last night, with that huge gown and killer Louboutin heels. And she didn’t go over the top with it, she kept her hair simple and didn’t do accessories. Ahhh I just can’t get over how perfect she looked.
guest
i actually kind of dig tilda’s look. so she went against the grain a little bit…
@colorMEpurple2@xanga - yesss olivia wilde’s dress was aaaaaawesome.
guest
LOVE emma stone’s. But I think natalie portman’s is adorable.
guest
Uhm, I have to disagree with you on most of your “Best” choices. Those dresses are not attractive, no matter how beautiful the women in them are.
And Tilda Swinton always seems to do that. She rarely follows the trend of the evening gowns, but I feel like she usually doesn’t wear things that flatter her figure at all.
I have to say I don’t like any of the above sleeved dresses, only because I don’t really like how the shoulders look in any of them. ><
guest
whats with all the sleeves?? it was hot in LA yesterday
i ended up falling in love with eva longorias hers was actually really nice (not pictured). && that pic doesnt show emma stone’s dress justice!

Tilda Swinton scares the shit out of me.

Anne and Scarlett were my favorites. I do like Natalie’s dress, because the rose bud is like a metaphor for the baby she’s carrying… =) Oh, and Helena Bonham Carter’s dress. Awesome.
guest
I dunno, January Jones isn’t really doing it for me. Her dress makes me think of a stripper or bellydancer or something who’s trying to find an outfit she can wear outside of work too…

I’m surprised Helena Bonham Carter wasnt on the worst list. She always makes me go “WTF?!” but I DO have to give her props for doing her own thing. Even if it’s weird to others. She’s a pretty & wonderful actress, which is more than I can say for alot of people…

I don’t understand all the hate I’ve been reading about Natalie’s look. I thought she looked incredible, my breath even caught when I saw her on the carpet!

Disagree with all your ‘bests’ . I think they all look terrible, especially January Jones’ red dress!
sunflower / 355 posts
I loved Natalie Portman’s dress! Olivia Wilde (not pictured) looked beautiful also, and I liked how her dress was not flowing.
guest
WHERE’S OLIVIA WILDE? I ADORE HER ENTIRE LOOK: DRESS, SHOES AND HAIR!
guest
@colorMEpurple2@xanga - Yeah, I was expecting to see those amazing shoes in this post.
guest
I agree with most of them, but I LOVED Natalie Portman’s dress! And she’s pregnant! The shape of her dress would be something I would’ve worn If I was pregnant too
guest
Anne Hathaway, Emma Stone, Leighton Meester, and Olivia Wilde were my favorites of the night. I don’t see how Leighton is trying too hard, it looks effortless to me. Now I know not everyone loves what Tilda is wearing, but I think only she could put that off. I love Natalie Portman’s dress too, she looks so cute!
guest
Olivia Wilde’s dress would be number one in my book.

My god these were all mediocre or just hideous.
guest
Leighton’s dress is awesome…what are you talking about??!!!
guest
I disagree with pretty much all your picks :/

@bAbiiExxPiNay@xanga - OhmyGod I was just going to say that! It’s beautiful. But maybe I’m just biased. I love Leighton hehe ^^

Angelina Jolie really did look stunning. And Eli Saab’s collection in general was amazing so you couldn’t go wrong wearing his stuff!
guest
Hm, I liked Natalie Portman’s dress.
guest
I liked Leighton’s dress a lot!

No Mila Kunis?
guest
I thought Tilda Swinton was a guy.
guest
I loved January Jones’ dress. Angelina Jolie’s was alright, the color and texture saved her imo, if that style of dress had been anything else it would’ve looked hideous.
Natalie Portman on the other hand, I mean what’s with all the hating? Awkward acceptance speech aside, her dress was beautiful, and so was she. Did you see the massive distraction that was front and center on Amy Adams’ dress? Why hasn’t that been on any worst dressed lists?
Tilda Swinton is always weird, its just part of the whole package.
guest
I agree with all except #8 and #9. I think Leighton looked great in that dress, and I hated January’s dress.

Angelina Jolie has never looked bad nor ugly (:
guest
I thought angelina looked like a damn christmas tree.
guest
All these nude, neutrals, and oranges just look monotonous to me, yuck.
@MoonFaeEyryan@xanga - Seriously.
@diannisforever@xanga - Agreed. The sleeves are throwing me way off!
hydrangea / 99 posts
I agree with all of these. BUT you left out J-Lo for worst dressed.
guest
I don’t like any of them….
guest
I love Angelina’s dress as well as Anne’s. I thought the long sleeves and open back dresses brought a new kind of sexiness to the red carpet.
guest
can we please assess how great this post is?
halfway through, i thought to myself “there is no way this isn’t a guest post.” intelligent comments about the clothing, styling, and designers, not a single spelling or grammatical error, none of jessica’s tired “i-wish-i-was-diablo-cody” vocab, an all-around really well written piece. refreshing!
guest
Um actually Leighton Meester looks great in that dress, I think it’s pretty.
guest
Meester needs to start borrowing her on screen characters clothes. For someone who plays Blair Waldorf, she should really update her closet, that or talk to the tv shows clothes manager…
I also didn’t think Portmans dress was THAT bad but she probably should have done something a tad form fitting and have straps. That way the bump was showing and it didn’t look so baggy :/
guest
I agree with mostly all of this, except I would switch Best and Worst with January Jones and Leighton Meester. I think January Jones looks cheap and over-exposed, while Leighton looks classy, flawless, and well put-together. Just my opinion – the rest is right on point!
guest
All comes down to opinion, but January Jones’s dress is horrible. I mean really fucking horrible.

i think january jone’s dress belongs on a trashy adolescent girl going to prom.
guest
scar jo’s dress was great…
the hair? awful. like bride-o-frankenstein.
did you see any shots of it from the side?
guest
Are you kididng me abuot January Jones????
Natalie Portman looks fantastic…..
I disagree about many of these….
guest
leighton meester could pull a helena bonham carter and still look fabulous.
…side note, helena looked awesome, i dont care what other people say!
guest
i actually really liked natalie portman’s dress. i thought it looked really good on her, and i really liked the rose, in my opinion it was a nice touch.
also, olivia wilde looked AMAZING. her dress was so awesome and beautiful!!!!!!!
guest
Angelina looks like a grandmother whose grandchild was given access to glue and sequins and told to decorate granny’s dress for her.
January looks like she’s wearing a hula skirt and not enough clothing on top.
On the other hand, I think Natalie Portman looked great. And Olivia Wilde is definitely missing from the post!
guest
I didn’t like Emma Stone’s look. Her whole look makes her appear twenty years older than she is. I also think that Natalie Portman looks nice in that dress. She has a sweet glow to her.
guest
I didn’t really like any of them except Natalie’s.
The dress would’ve looked a lot better without the stem and leaves, though.
guest
TILDA SWILTON’S was baaaaaaaaaad, seriously, I would have actually just worn white shirt and pulled a “risky business” look and try to look like a comedian.
Honestly she forgot her skirt, ran over to closest restaurant and either a)borrowed table cloth OR b) they curtains. Disappointed I really like her as a professional.

Re: #3 – red hair + pink dress = no bueno.
guest
Dude, really? Natalie Portman is pregnant and one of the most authentic/gorgeous women in the acting business. Has she even had plastic surgery? I doubt it. She’s GORGEOUS. That dress makes her look SO adorable. Seriously.
& Scarlett looks like she’s about to kill the camera man. hah
guest
Everybody’s so well covered up. It’s strange!
guest
I like Scar-Jo’s dress, but what was up with that hair? January Jones as one of your “best” picks? Really? She looks like a pole dancer. My cousin wore a dress almost identical to Angelina Jolie’s to her junior prom in 1985 and, in keeping with the 1985 prom theme, Anne Hathaway looks like a walking disco ball.
In sum, I’m not really I sure I agree with your “best” choices.
orchid / 118 posts
I think I agree on only ONE best. Most of those dresses are so gross.
guest
What the heck is Tilda wearing?!? lol
