After the success of Teen Mom and 16 and Pregnant, it only makes sense that MTV would chronicle the lives of teenagers who opt for another route: abortion.
Entertainment Weekly reports that MTV will air a stand-alone abortion special, titled No Easy Decision, on December 28. The documentary will feature 16 and Pregnant‘s Markai, who contemplates abortion during her second pregnancy, and Dr. Drew, who will interview other young girls struggling to make a decision.
According to MTV, the special will present an informative, well-rounded take on the issue by covering everything from contraception to the emotional fallout from an abortion.
Does this special sound like a good idea? Will you be tuning in on December 28?

The concept would be sound if it were being done by anyone other than MTV.

@mademoiselle_rachelxx@xanga - I agree
For all MTV’s parading of teens with zero self-control, showing abortion as an acceptable way to escape personal responsibility is revolting.

@kinamorata@xanga - Me too. Atleast this will show all sides of abortion, so says the description. I know they’ll get their asses rided though. I still dont think it was smart to give 15 minutes of fame to teen pregnancy though. It floods my stream on FB & they think the show is so funny & cute when it’s not. People are trying to get pregnant to be on there. Sheesh…when I was 16, I was watching cartoons & hanging out like a kid because I WAS a kid!

I might watch it.

I’m over those shows. They’re all the same: Billy joe and me started datin 2 months ago. He moved in with my ma and pa and me and now i’m pregnant. We’re gonna get married and live in the shed out back. Oh dont leave me billy joe. You got to be a man and take care of that baby son. Blah blah blah. Shut the fuck up. Oh look. You let a guy fill your cunt with jizz and what do ya know. There’s a baby in that place where all your food gos. Die. Plus i dont see the point in marrying someone just because you made a baby… You still fucked up the first comes love, then comes marriage, then comes baby in the baby carriage sooo just skip it cause you dont actually love that person and you’ll be divorced in a year or 2 which costs more than your court house wedding. Idk. I hate teens and teens who dont wear condoms. Disgusting. Kids..Stick to oral.

@Shinbi_Belldandy@xanga - Knock on wood, my friend and i were like when we were 15-16, the biggest issue of our life was how were we gonna get our hands on the next edition of Lisa Frank binders. Childhood has a lifespan of 10 years this century.

either damn way it ain’t gonna change the fact that teen or adult nobody in this world takes responsibility of their sex life.. with all the information and dangers of having a sex life nobody gives a fuck.. they only care about feeling good and shit like that.. it won’t make a difference whether dateline did the special or mtv when pigs fly that’s when EVERYONE OF ALL AGES will begin to take responsibility of their sex lives!

ummmmm hmm. interesting… i’m really not sure how i feel about this. but it does seem that it would only be fair to show the other side… they already have shows with keeping the baby and adoption, but there isn’t any mention of abortion… i hope they go about it in the right way

People here think MTV = crap. MTV actually does a few good series, Teen Mom/16 & pregnant being one of them, but I think their best is the docu-series True Life.
I’ll watch this episode… girls need to know they can make whatever choice they feel is best for them and the child. Teen pregnancy is one of those things you don’t really know until you’ve been there.
Plus, if I was Markai… no one in their right mind would want a second child with her cretin boyfriend.
guest
I am interested to see it, but I fear for the girls on it. I can’t imagine the backlash they’ll face; I can only hope it is not violent.
Also, I really wish they had…an OB/GYN, or any other person that wasn’t Dr. Drew. He’s such a pretentious, paternalistic ass.
(Also, I really have to ask, wtf is up with that picture? It appears to be a pregnancy test, except the chick is holding it by the stick part you pee on. That’s just gross.)

i wouldnt watch it . it’s ridiculous that they’re even making a show about pregnant teenagers . for what ? fame ? i mean , i’ve ran into maci from 16&pregnant ‘& teen mom a few times (we both lived in chattanooga) , an i saw people freak out over seeing her . juss because someone is on t.v. doesnt mean they’re super stars . so making a show about teenagers getting abortions is juss as ridiculous . some people will pity the hell out of them , but others , like myself , will think they’re absolutely ridiculous because they could’ve prevented the pregnancy in the first place . an plus , MTV only selects a few teenagers …. do you know how many more teenagers go through stuff like this EVERY day ? think about it ……

@mashroob@xanga - I used to love Lisa Frank!!! I wonder if they still make that stuff lol. It’s really sad that kids miss half of their childhood nowadays. Ten years ago I was 15 and wasn’t exactly playing with Barbies anymore but I certainly wasn’t worried about getting abortions or whether or not I was going to give up on high school to raise a baby.

I will be watching this. I think it’s important to educate teens on all of the options.

I don’t know if I would watch it. It’s hard enough to get an abortion, I don’t know how making that decision in the direct eye of the public would be. I think it would be more interesting if they did a show on adoption. I was so impressed with the way Catelynn and her boyfriend handled their situation. I’m not sure if I agree with them getting engaged (I’m not sure if they got married. I didn’t watch the whole series), but I think it would be better to have a show on adoption since abortion seems kind of like the ‘easy’ way out at 16. These kids don’t realize the repercussions of their actions. I think abortion is okay in certain circumstances, but not these one. These kids are not rape victims who have a child based on something that wasn’t due to their own accord. They should man up and make mature decisions since they think they’re mature enough to be having sex. I do think MTV is actually doing a good job of sex ed since a lot of schools are not meeting up to the new generation’s requirements.

I won’t be watching it, but not because it is so morally reprehensible or because kids these days lack morals. I get the feeling there will be more interesting things on.
Teenagers (and gasp pre-teens) have been having sex since forever. They just didn’t have Facebook or MTV to publicize it on. They had diaries. There have always been teenagers getting pregnant, they just got sent to homes for teenage girls (in the days of yore when my mom and grandma were young) or they had to go to the alternative highschool (way back before mainstreaming). Just because you and your friends weren’t sexually active doesn’t mean others weren’t. I grew up in the 80s/90s and kids were just as sexually active (and definitely more into drugs) compared to kids these days.
Personally, I think that MTV did a good job at showing how crappy being a teen mom is. I doubt this show will make abortion the next great thing. As far as MTV making teen girls want to be stupid and get pregnant just to get on TV, it really isn’t MTV”s problem. Anyone who would get pregnant to be on a show would do just about anything short of murder (I hope to be on a show).
guest
I think i’ll watch it. Despite the overwhelming amount of shit that comes from MTV, this might actually be something worth watching. Hopefully it’s a little tactfully done.
guest
I worry about how it will affect the lives of the girls who go on the show. The others are so popular but I dont think it will work out that way for those that chose abortion. There are so many people that are openly against it and can be very rude about it. I hope for the sake of these teen girls that people arent too vicious about it

I have my doubts since it’s MTV doing it, but who knows, it could actually be objectively done and informative. There will probably be a lot of people who will just assume it’s advocating abortion as an easy way out without watching to see if that’s really the case…I only hope that they cover all the points that need to be covered and that the girls on the show don’t become hated public figures for considering it as a choice.

wait, how can you air something about abortion? i mean we’ll know the end decision, so the whole show will be anitclimactic.
guest
@SuburbanSweetheart - The problem of teens lacking personal responsibility isn’t just shown on Teen Mom. Almost every ‘reality’ show on MTV shows teens putting themselves in situations where pregnancy is possible, and this is endorsed as normal behavior. If MTV really cared about preventing teen pregnancy, maybe they should have shows that demonstrate a little more self-control, and a little more consideration about how the choices we make as teens affect us as adults. Doing whatever the heck you want simply because it feels good at the time isn’t a smart way to live, but that seems to be MTV’s biggest motto.
rose / 802 posts
@sarahzthoughts@xanga - I definitely won’t argue with you that MTV’s shows are terribly irresponsible across the board, & the network’s entire philosophy is at odds with the idea of personal responsibility. But I think what you & I are disagreeing about, at the core, is whether abortion is a valid means of handling a pregnancy – & that’s not something we’re going to suddenly agree upon.
guest
@SuburbanSweetheart - I’m not against a show that talks about abortions among teenagers. What I’m concerned about is how MTV is going to handle it. I could be wrong, but somehow I don’t trust them to be objective about it. If they’re going to show a girl who had an abortion and doesn’t regret it, then they should also show a girl who had an abortion and DID regret it.
ranunculus / 3457 posts
@sarahzthoughts@xanga - Considering they showed two moms who went through adoption (one who regretted and the other didn’t regret adoption), they’ll probably do the same with abortion.
guest
I don’t watch any of these shows – I don’t have MTV, but I do think it’s perfectly acceptable for teenagers to be aware of abortion.
Those who make this decision for 15 minutes of fame weren’t up to being parents, in my opinion.
guest
I’m scared it’s not going to be as informative and professional as they make it sound. I mean, isn’t that other teen mom show or whatever just for entertainment? I’ve never watched those shows because I don’t see myself getting anything valuble from it.
guest
@sarahzthoughts@xanga - THANK YOU. Took the words right out of my mouth. MTV’s attempts at being socially conscious are laughably absurd when there’s contemptible and loathsome garbage like “Jersey Shore” and “My Super Sweet 16″ brainwashing teenagers who’ve been raised by the media instead of actual parents.
guest
They’re just trying to make more money. They got so many views from Teen Mom and 16 & Pregnant they’re just trying to push the envelope and present it as something informative.
guest
@sarahzthoughts@xanga - dont be ignorant, they havent even aired the special so you dont know how they are showing it. unacceptable or acceptable. and do you really think that all people seeking abortions are young and have no self control?
guest
omfg that’s awesome! I hope she gets it!!
guest
@diannisforever@xanga - Based on MTV’s history I can definitely make an educated guess on how this new special will be portrayed, and if you didn’t see my response above, I said I hope I’m wrong about how they show it. I’m not the only one who doubts MTV’s ability to cover a subject like this with the justice it deserves. And while not everyone seeking an abortion lacks self-control, come on, it’s not like MTV has shown us a great number of teens who understand what that actually means.
guest
wait that markai girl is pregnant again? where have i been? hah.
guest
It isn’t necessarily the greatest idea that it is on MTV because I don’t know how truly educational it will be but a lot of people in my generation watch that channel & the shows that go along with it, so if you want to reach them, put it on MTV I guess. I like that they’re doing a special on this subject. It shows there is more then just 2 choices, which they have shown are to parent the child or have it adopted. Abortion is a choice that 1 in 5 women make, & while I don’t believe it should be used as a form of birth control, I do believe when a mistake has been made, it can be necessary. Girls I know in my generation have done it around the age of 16 so I definitely think it could be helpful to chronicle the process. I just hope they don’t over play the emotional side of it, it’s different for everyone & not everyone reacts to it the same way so I don’t want them to depict it as a procedure that will bring on nothing but depression & a regretful life, that doesn’t always happen.
guest
@stonewhite@xanga - Seriously she is?

guest
@Erika_Steele@xanga - THANK YOU.
guest
@stonewhite@xanga - Abortion is not a form of birth control, & she would be using it as such because this is her second unplanned pregnancy due to lack of contraceptives which is something she should have used, considering she has already had an unplanned pregnancy & birth.
guest
it sounds interesting, but I don’t think that they should air it. I know that abortion is an option for a pregnant girl, but everyone already knows that. unless they show how painful abortion can be, it won’t necessarily deter girls away from the idea but rather remind them that if they’re not safe with sex, they can always just get an abortion. instead, they should stick to showing girls who go through with their pregnancies.
and they should know that this is WAY too controversial and sensitive a thing to show on TV, especially having to do with a teenager who made a dumbass mistake. after all, this is her second pregnancy.

guest
@beauty_bar@xanga - 100% agree.
guest
@ivarahBharavi@xanga - It’s an option that isn’t really openly discussed so it’s hard to say how many girls REALLY know about it. I think that if it’s a legal option, you should be able to be educated about it. & Abortion isn’t a decision taken lightly, so it’s not like a girl will get pregnant & say, “Oh well, I’ll just go get an abortion real quick.” Not to mention, it costs a lot of money – most insurances don’t pay for that procedure, so it’s not something someone will fork out money for frequently. I don’t think they should stick to showing only girls who go through with their pregnancies just because in some minds that’s the “only way”. It’s not the only way & everyone should be educated about every option available. It’s just about information & education, not to get people to think that way or do it.
That girl is very stupid for getting pregnant a second time but for everyone who has gotten “accidentally” pregnant the first time, we’re all human & we ALL make mistakes. Some are bigger then others. It doesn’t make you stupid, it makes you human. Unless you don’t learn the first time, then yes, I agree.
guest
@Shl3333@xanga - True that. It’s pretty much this way, if you’re not prepared enough to have a child, think twice about having sex. It’s not THAT amazing.
guest
I am so watching!
guest
@beauty_bar@xanga - well, you’re right, a lot of girls don’t know as much about abortion as they should. I guess it would be good to educate girls on safe abortions as opposed to risky black market ones if they’re going to get them anyway. sure abortion isn’t an easy decision and it’s costly, but if it’s really that difficult to have the process done, why do statistics show that a huge percent of women have abortions? there are unintelligent girls that I know in high school who somehow find a way to get abortions without telling their parents. at a young age it really is just a quick fix.
as for the showing it on TV thing, even though sometimes the intent for something is solely to educate, you have to be conscious of what other messages it could send. there were girls getting pregnant on purpose to get on 16 and Pregnant/Teen Mom. I’m sure that the intention for the producers was not to have girls try to get pregnant, but it happened anyway.
guest
It’s hardly a quick fix. Everyone has their own individual reason for getting one. Some reasons may be more solid then others but it’s still their right to do what they want with their body. I don’t know how girls at your high school are getting these abortions without telling their parents, but I have to ask, how do YOU know they are? Everyone that I know of has told a parent & gotten consent. & Also, if these girls are so unintelligent, I don’t really think they have any business raising a child then & therefore their decision was a good one.
At some point we have to be responsible for our own actions. The girls who are purposely getting pregant to be on “16 & Pregnant” clearly don’t have any guidance, morals or values. It’s sad, actually. The lack of those morals & values have nothing to do with tv. It starts at home. People have to be their own persons & decide right from wrong & then accept their consequences as they come.
I see this as a vicious cycle. I don’t want to constantly see generation after generation having teen pregnancies. So if they’re going to have an abortion, more power to them. But then be smarter the next time around, it’s only a mistake once. If you can’t learn the first time around then you need help, seriously.
guest
@sarahzthoughts@xanga - oh please
it is acceptable.
If you’re in a situation where it is needed it is acceptable.
ffs
guest
Why wouldn’t MTV do it? That’s what teenagers watch. They’re reaching out to our demographic. Put this on dateline and I doubt any of us teens would be watching it. We’d probably be watching 16&pregnant. The show is horrifying to the highest degree. Almost every single one of the girls drops out of high school and ends up a single mother fighting with her baby daddy. I don’t watch that show and go, “Wow. I hope that I get pregnant by a dead beat so I can be on MTV,” and I am sure most of the population doesn’t either. For fact I can tell you that you don’t see things like that at school. I had half a year of “health” as a freshmen and then I was scooted into Comp. Apps. We learned about how to eat properly, exercise, and for the last two weeks we learned about the different methods of birth control. I have talked to so many girls in my school who had sex before they got their period. Girls who have told me that even if they don’t want to have sex they do or their boyfriends will be “pissed.” There are real problems in our health education system. MTV just created a scape goat that ignorant adults can blame teenage idiocy on.
guest
@petiteme_x@xanga - Define “when it is needed.” If it’s “needed” just so a woman can continue living recklessly because a baby would cramp her style, then abortion is not a necessity, it’s selfish. Be a grown up and take responsibility for your actions, instead of disposing the child like garbage.

I think this is a great idea. For all of you that have such a negative view on these girls , you should just be put in there shoes. Not everyone gets an abortion because THEY want to. Some times it’s not there choice. And I know In my case it wasn’t. I’d give anything in the world to care for my child and dealing with the mistake I had made but I was forced to take a different route. I cry everyday about this and seeing an episode on something like this makes me realize that I’m not the only one going through the same pain. You never think things like this will ever happen to you .. But they do and I’d give anything to take it back. So rest in peace my little angel, I will be watching this.

@sarahzthoughts@xanga - not all people who have abortions are “living recklessly”. Are you aware that birth control and condoms are not 100% effective? Did you know that condoms break, people forget to take their pills at certain times and so on and so forth. Perhaps you’re 16 and you had sex for the first time with your boyfriend and end up pregnant. What if your parents refuse to support you, or want to kick you out.
Right. These are all great reasons why abortion should be available for women. Oh and what if I’m just not ready to have a kid. I won’t sacrifice sex because my condom could break anytime… and is that my fault? No. I’ll be a responsible adult and deal with the problem I’ve gotten MYSELF into. NOT YOU. NOT THE MEDIA. NOT my next door neighbour. Me. The problem I got into. I have every right to live my life the way I choose, yes even if that means killing a kid that could cause me years of depression and heart ache.
If you chose to keep the baby you are living your own life and handling the situation you put yourself into. I would simply choose to do like yourself and handle the situation in a way that wouldn’t fuck up my life seeing as I actually am 16 and would not be able to have a child right now.
And you know it’s not just black and white cut and dry when it comes to having a child. You have an instant connection with the child(most cases) where it breaks your heart to give the child up for adoption when you see it after he/she is delivered. You have to experience 9 months of waiting and possibly attaching yourself to the child just to what, give it up because you cannot finish growing up and raise the kid? I actually knew a woman who gave her child up about 20 years ago and still regrets it! Another I know was admitted into a mental ward 5 months after the adoption for an attempt at suicide.
I see taking initiative to handle your problem a responsible action regardless of whether you decide to abort the child or keep it. After all it’s not like I’m relying on others to handle it for me and put the consequences of my actions upon others(and I’m talking about living breathing walking around human beings, so don’t twist it).
Now you may argue that not having sex in the first place is the best thing to do and blah blah, but really, if it weren’t for sex the human race would not exist. Sex is natural. It’s just conservative America that drills it into your(and many others heads)head that it’s evil. Or if that doesn’t stump you perhaps thinking about a married couple having sex and the woman gets pregnant. What if she simply isn’t ready to have a child? Why can’t she make love to her husband and share the most precious thing with him and not worry about having a child when she is just not ready to have one?
Trying to stop people from making choices is as silly as trying to control what people wear. We all are capable of making decisions and getting ourselves out of problems we get ourselves into. Why can’t abortion just be another option? It really doesn’t concern anyone besides the mother, the father and the doctor.
I think this would be a good thing for you to watch. Perhaps experience what it feels like in these girl’s shoes for two seconds. It might not be too bad to gain a new perspective.
Edit: had to space it out

the thing with MTV is that it turns everything into a joke, and abortions…aren’t funny? It’s a touchy topic.
guest
@sarahzthoughts@xanga - when you have a show based on pregnant teens thats the whole point to showcase pregnant teens, not to show us those that have practiced safe sex. && seriously just watch the show, people have been saying that MTV has been corrupting teens and not credible or w/e since its start yet even now its still running and due to contrary belief the rate of teen pregnancy has gone down to record lows
guest
@diannisforever@xanga - I have watched the show. I could respect it more if said teens actually grew up after they had their babies. With the exception of Maci (and I guess Caitlyn as well), the show went from being informative and realistic to overly dramatic and ridiculous. As I’ve said before, I think it could go a lot better if some network other than MTV was producing it. And has it been proven that MTV is responsible for the lowered rate of teen pregnancy?
guest
@sarahzthoughts@xanga - i have no clue but people can now step off their soap boxes and stop blaming a TV network for increased teen pregnancy when thats not even true. But there are many options to handling pregnancy weather people like it or not.&& abortion is one of those options. i still cant wait to see this since you dont see anything on TV from girls actually going through or attempting to go through with it.

I don’t think that this should be aired. Shows about teen pregnancy are bad enough. Granted, it’s a reality in this country, but it’s showing that it’s ok to get pregnant b/c you can become famous for it. Abortion is a very sensitive issue for any women, especially teenage girls. I couldn’t imagine the emotions running through these teenagers when contemplating abortion. Also, ome religions are against it, and it could cause a lot of controversy if aired. In addition, some teens may view abortion as the cool thing to do b/c they can get on MTV for doing it. I don’t think that’s the best message to send to teenage girls.
guest
@diannisforever@xanga - Well of course it’s ridiculous to blame a TV show for teen pregnancy, even if it is a factor. Morality and decision-making skills and all that should be taught at home. I won’t be able to see the show on abortion since I’ll be in England, but I’m sure Lovelyish will fill me in on everything I missed.
guest
oh, the controversy awaits.
guest
I personally am pro-choice, but don’t know how I feel about this special. I think that teenager’s might assume that it means that getting pregnant is no big deal because you can just go get an abortion a week later or something. I think it will be good though if they actually show both sides of the issue and show that even teenage girls that are pro-choice find the decision hard, both before and after making it.
guest
@PseudoEuphoric@xanga - So are you saying that if a woman is raped, she has no right to even want to get an abortion?
orchid / 114 posts
Interesting. Yea, I would watch an episode and see if I like it. I guess it’ll give teens a view on another option and such
guest
@radicalsounds@xanga - Yeah, I agree with your worries. Some anti-abortion rights groups can use very violent terrorist tactics against doctors, counselors and even the girls who seek abortions. There are websites that chronicle the names and addresses of people who provide abortion services and ask that these people be assassinated. There are blogs that claim they are waging a holy war against medical practitioners. I dearly hope that the producers of this show gave the featured girls protection against some of the more violent elements of the anti-abortion rights crowd.
I’m also a little worried about the “emotional fallout” mentioned on the show from abortions. Most surveys show that regret over an abortion usually occurs in American women. Women who obtain abortions in Sweden, Britain or Singapore very rarely- if ever- experience any depression after the operation. Post-abortion depression is an artificial condition brought about by bullying elements in the anti-abortion rights media in the US. I hope MTV mentions this and doesn’t just implicitely pressure their teenage girl viewers (who will be making up the majority of this show’s audience) to assume that abortion will never be an option for them.
guest
oh..that’s today. no i have work.

Welp, “Teen Mom” encouraging teen pregnancy now an abortion show to encourage that.

I think if it were on a True Life it would actually mean more and be taken more seriously than being another part of the 16&preg/teen mom set.
I might watch it though, just because. The shows are informative to a point and I’m just curious on how they pull it off. Will it make girls second think about their decisions or not..

i think abortion is definitely a difficult choice for many girls and women, and i don’t think we need to see it. obviously, i don’t know the details of how they will be portraying the entire process, but it seems a bit extreme. is television the only way to get the attention of youth nowadays?? it is still possible to educate children at home and at school! when did TV take on the sole responsibility of raising children?!
