When it comes to midnight snacking, I always get cravings for something sweet. Most of the time I resist it because I need to wake up early anyway, so going to sleep is the better option.
However, during late night study sessions or other reasons for insomina, I like to think of healthy alternatives for dessert rather than just a pint of Ben and Jerry’s.
First I’ll mention some healthy replacements, where instead of:
Ice cream – frozen yogurt
Milk Chocolate – dark chocolate
White Flour – wheat flour for baking cookies (and cut the sugar amount in half!)
White Eggs- Use half the amount, and use whole eggs
Now for some snack ideas:
1. My go-to late night healthy dessert is yogurt (or Greek yogurt, it is sweeter) with strawberries and blueberries (or whatever your favorite fruits are.)
2. Frozen yogurt, fat-free jello or pudding with fruit too!
3. Home-made frozen yogurt sandwhiches. Plop some frozen yogurt between two gram crackers and wrap it up in plastic wrap. Then throw them in the freezer until solid.
4. Mix fat-free yogurt (I always use vanilla), peanut butter, and brown sugar together. Use it as dipping sauce for cut up apples.
5. Skim milk with fat-free chocolate/strawberry syrup

milk/yogurt/refined sugar/peanut butter isn’t really that healthy. I think a better option for dessert snack ideas would be fruit based. And a healthier alternative to brown sugar would be agave syrup, brown rice syrup, maple syrup, etc.
A great desert is to freeze a banana and then put it in a blender for “ice cream.”

@ShimmerBodyCream@xanga - An even better dessert though is to have real ice cream. With melted chocolate on top. And maybe a cherry, if you’re into fruit.

@ShimmerBodyCream@xanga - I love agave syrup.. it’s so versatile. @NikBv@xanga - lol

Thanks for the ideas!

@NikBv@xanga - I don’t need a cherry, I already know a fruit.

@ShimmerBodyCream@xanga - Agave nectar is actually rather bad for you, because it’s basically another version of high fructose corn syrup — minus the corn, of course. While fructose isn’t bad for you in the small quantities, in the high concentrations that these syrups contain, they overwhelm the body’s ability to process it. Fructose is processed in the liver, and so when there is too much of it, the liver just directly makes fats from the excess and sends it them off into the bloodstream as triglycerides. You’re better off with regular ol’ glucose (honey, and the brown rice and maple syrups you mentioned), though it’s important to restrict your intake regardless.

@soulfuric - I agree with you, those sweeteners aren’t really healthy. I don’t really think any sweetner is generally healthy. But I think they are a lot healthier than Brown Sugar. The main reason I would say natural Agave syrup is a lot healthier than HFCS is because it has a low Gl and it won’t spike your blood sugar.

@ShimmerBodyCream@xanga - That’s true, but I still shy away from anything with that much concentrated fructose. Really, the only way to be healthyhealthy is to lose the sweet tooth, but since that’s nearly impossible for your average breathing human, might as well just stick to fruit like you suggested.
