A university team uncovered details behind the perception of beauty, saying that “physical vanity is a universal construct that applies across all cultures.” Essentially, the notion that western culture is the only culture obsessed with beauty and physical appearance is a fallacy.
There are, however, many differences between what American culture believes to be beautiful and what those belonging to other cultures believes to be beautiful. This culturally variant idea of beauty is key to understanding which beauty products, and which types of fashion sell the best, and why – according to region and beauty beliefs.
Ultimately, beauty truly is in the eye of the beholder…or culture.
What do you believe to be truly beautiful?

Honestly, for the most part I think American beauty is rather average. I think it’s stupid that we compare beauty to what is considered “our” beauty. To me the most beautiful person is asian, indian, middle eastern, african american, native american. Maybe it’s because they’re exotic and we always want what we don’t have (or something) but really, I think our standards of beauty in america are very american.

I believe that everybody is beautiful. Every single person has some quality about them that just strikes me as beautiful.

To answer the title, America does. Look at the East Asians getting double eyelid surgery or the actors in Bollywood many of them have ‘white’ features or South Asians whitening their skin. So America definetly has a large influence to many.
I admit I will drool over Marilyn Monroe and Angelina Jolie, but it’s also how a person acts that matters. If you act like a jerk, it doesn’t matter to me what you look like, you’re a jerk the end.

@dianchik_icons@xanga - i just want to clarify that the “skin whitening” thing is a sign of beauty in asian culture all throughout history. being fair meant not working out in the sun. it was a sign of good upbringing and wealth.

personally I think big lemur eyes that only show the black iris and no white areas, a cute cat nose with no bone arch that humans have, and an adorable little modest smile:) or a blythe doll
to each their own.

ahh reminds me of me just complaining how the UK has bbq rib flavored doritos and we only have cheesburger (special flavors) i was disappointed but it is according to region. im not mad tho.
and of course i had to relate this to food and not beauty but i understand the beauty part of it.

@suuperstar@xanga - Oh yea, sorry. It’s still sad anyways. Most of those creams just end up ruining the skin.

There are ideals of beauty that appear all over the world despite culture, which suggests that it originates in our nature (rather than our nurture), like the waist-hip ratio of women, and symmetry of bodily features. As far as nurtured ideals of beauty are concerned though, it might be fair to say that the USA has a strong influence in other cultures, in not just beauty, but things like popular culture as well. This is merely a result of its powerful circle of influence. However, to say that it actually defines what beauty is around the world is quite an unjustified stretch. I’m sure most people outside the USA would laugh at the concept. I think the image used in this article even proves my point. As for what I believe is beautiful, well, coincidentally waist-hip ratio, symmetry of bodily features, youthful appearance, healthy-looking body, good personality, not much else.

for America yes and Hollywood still sets trends for fashion world wide.

Yes. America does define what is beautiful. Why do you think so many people (mostly women) drive themselves crazy trying to achieve that ‘typical’ American look. “Slim down your waist because it looks sexy” “Kim Kardashians sexy. How to get her hair”. Its everywhere. I cant get away from it.
guest
Well, I am considered fairly normal in American, but I’m considered really beautiful in Korea, so yes, the definition of ideal beauty is different between cultures. I think, honestly, it comes down to YOU being confident and happy with how you look. Screw cultural definitions of beauty.

@haltija@xanga - Lol…a gross but interesting question.
To me, a beautiful person is someone who embraces what makes them look unique compared to other people. Every single person on earth is different, and “standards” of beauty completely negate that by making us think we should all look a certain way. A beautiful person knows who they are and isn’t afraid to show it, even if that means going against mainstream beauty ideals. And I also think that personality plays a part. If someone is drop-dead gorgeous but a total bitch, then that negates physical beauty. But that is just my opinion and not how the world works most of the time.

@haltija@xanga - haha, thanks for making me regurgitate my food

I sound like a grump but I find it arrogant you’re counting western beauty ideals at “american”
I mean, “bumpits” are pretty laughable over here in Europe.Try “do the major American cities and Western Europe set the beauty standards…”then Ill agree
guest
I’m just curious as to how the person can speak properly with that in their lip? :-/
guest
I think it’s actually the European look people follow the most. Trends come to America from Europe, which most people don’t realize. Where I’m from (Vancouver, BC) people my age (not me) generally tend to think the typical American is stupid, obese, and white trash, which is pretty bad. But I suppose many Americans think Canadians are parka-wearing igloo dwellers.
Anyways, it’s pretty obvious that everyone as their own unique perception of beauty, which is influenced by the way they were raised, their culture, etc
guest
This is obviously true. All cultures define what is beautiful but it does vary substantially. In many places in Africa, where people are very poor and unable to afford food, the ideal is plump (even obese). In others breasts aren’t sexual or beautiful at all. Even in Western cultures the beauty ideal varies by ethnicity (which are part of the larger culture but can maintain their own).
This isn’t news. It’s pretty much common sense when you realize other cultures don’t care about the same things we do. I wish more people in the “western” (read U.S.) world would realize that other cultures don’t give a damn about much of what we tote as “right.”
guest
@dianchik_icons@xanga - Too bad most of America isn’t white or “Euro”. At least anymore.
When I saw this title it made me laugh. America does NOT define what is beautiful, and if Americans think that then we are proving what assholes/bigheads we really are.

LOVE.
Love is truly beautiful.–
