I thought this would be one of those inspiring posts that talks about how the most beautiful woman is the one with confidence and every single one of us are beautiful.

Guess not. I’ve seen this post before but I see beautiful in a bunch of people so I don’t need a chart to see what IS beautiful.

…there is a significant lack of diversity in these women. As in, there are no other races. I wonder how different the final picture would look if someone compiled average-looking women from several races.

Every person has a different idea of what beauty is, I don’t see why they even bothered to do this. All of the girls individually are more attractive than the final result.

Not even, as someone else mentioned, Hispanics, Asians, biracial women, Middle Eastern women, or any other ethnicity. And considering that there are more people of other ethnicities than white on this planet, yes, it will be hard for the majority of us to accept THIS as “the ultimate beauty.”

I think Angelina Jolie and Kristin Kreuk are gorgeous, but I don’t feel the same about Charlize Theron or Jessica Biel.

Someone else could think the exact opposite of my opinion.

Instead of conducting useless, flawed experiments, these researchers need to do something significant with their time.

The world does not equal just people who are “white”. The only other race represented here is Jessica Alba who I think is Mexican? and Kristin Kreuk who is half Chinese. It started with scientists trying to take the average of serial rapist faces to try to see what the average one looked like, and it proved a failure, but they did find that the composite images were are very handsome men

also, you don’t have to take the average of beautiful faces to get a beautiful average face, you can do any face

Aside from people getting pissed off about race, I though it was a neat composite coming from a mathematician’s point-of-view.  It was just something fun…people need to calm down.

I’ve seen a photo very similar to that last one, actually…in my psychology book.

Just because this particular study used the 16 “most beautiful faces” that someone else had decided on, the study in my book used 40 something women, of all races, and created a composite, which as I mentioned, looked similar to the one above.
The primary point of this article is that scientifically speaking, “most beautiful” is “most average.”  It’s all about symmetry and such.  Anyone heard of Marquadt’s symmetry mask?  It’s essentially a mask he designed with everything in perfect symmetrical proportion.  If you think about it, this makes sense, as average the faces of the entire world should lead to symmetry, right?  His studies have found that the world’s “most attractive people,” as judged from the celebrity pool of ANY culture (meaning, all races) have been known to be a much closer fit to the mask than most “normal” people would be.

So yes, this particular article is biased, and the setup was not adequately explained.  But the result is still valid.  The science behind it still stands, and I find it fascinating.

Not in the world.. Maybe the most beautiful Caucasian. I’ve seen the Korean version- and it was also gorgeous.

This was just a study done with celebrities, I’m not sure where it comes from or if it really meets appropriate research criteria. If it is a valid study, the 16 “most beautiful” faces were most likely chosen based on surveys or ratings from the general public. Oddly enough, the “averaged” attractive female faces end up looking quite similar no matter who is used. Of course, all of the research I have looked at in this area is of white women, but there might be a study using African American women or other races out there.

i do think she is very beautiful – or perhaps pretty is a better word?  for me, beauty, even physical beauty, comes also from the personality and life inside, which of course a composite image doesn’t have.

What I’m most confused about is the correlation between the two halves of this article. While the composite is comprised of mostly Caucasians (movie stars who have been hand-picked for their beauty and sometimes their talent), the most beautiful woman in the world is actually Indian (which no one seems to realize because that photograph is neither very telling nor is her name given): Aishwarya Rai.

I’m really surprised no one else realizes that last fact; she’s been the most beautiful woman in the world for something like 4 years minimum. And she is gorgeous. Abso-freakin’-lutely gorgeous. You have to be blind not to see it.

As for the race card, it is a valid point, @shake_things_up@xanga, especially in “white-washed” Hollywood. I mean, you can take it for what it is–yes, those women are beautiful for some reason or another–but then what’s the point of being able to comment on these posts?

Anyone who believes this lacks a part of their brain. Not all of the women used here are gorgeous (Jennifer Love Hewitt and buck-tooth Hillary Duff? Really? And IMO the only thing pretty about ScarJo is her lips and her tits…), and it’s purposely excluding anyone who isn’t white…. with perhaps the exception of Jessica Alba who would rather be anything than Hispanic.

Where’s women like, say, Tyra Banks and that Indian actress… her last name was Rai….?

I think the “finished” woman needs a nose job. Then again I’m real picky about noses. This just proves the thing to be highly subjective…

Which brings me to my last point. I’ll bet anything most of these actresses have had at least one plastic surgery. So they’re not as genetically blessed as we all think they are.

Going off on a tangent….Perfectly proportioned doesn’t always equal beauty in my book. Truly beautiful people radiate beauty from within so much so that you FORGET their proportions. Now, that’s REAL beauty.

Cliche much? But it’s true. I’ve experience it countless times in my life and I think it’s so amazing that while strangers may be remembered for their looks, friends are remembered for their beautiful personality. Seriously, think about it. If I you say Charlie, I remember his tone of voice. If I say Min, I remember her voice and laughter. If I say Jerica, I remember her being so active it killed her to have to sit in class for 6 hours a day.

No, I think the separate faces are prettier than the composite. I think women are beautiful in different ways. For example, Anne Hathaway is extremely beautiful, but so is Megan Fox, but in a different way.The composite looks very plain. What about different skin tones?

People seem to be forgetting that Kristin Kreuk is half Asian.

She’s pleasant-looking, but a bit boring. Her face may have perfect symmetry, but in addition to lacking the idiosyncrasies that make the knockout, it lacks certain qualities indicative of health and fertility.

She looks pretty average to me.

Beauty is still subjective. Even if 99.9% of the world chose one person as the most beautiful, there is still one-tenth of a percentage who would disagree.

And the girl in the first picture is odd-looking. Her mouth doesn’t look like it belongs on her face. And her nose frightens me.

wow, people are really sensitive about race. this is a godamn experiment about beauty, not a time to express discontent about being a colored person.

symmetry is the key here. personally, i think the composite from the second batch is prettier than the final product.

Question: why are they all white? I mean, some of them are darker, but really, they’re white.  Aren’t black women beautiful too?  I always thought black women in general were prettier than white women (but that’s just a personal opinion)

My first reaction was that these faces can’t possibly represent all the most beautiful women in the world when they are a poor representation of the beautiful women of all races..but then again what the heck do I know???

Even though the final image is beautiful I can say that it is only a fignment of imagination because that face doesnt exist. I will also say that I have seen much more beautiful faces in my life right here where I live and on internet. Therefore my conclusion is this. The final image is not the most beautiful one in the world.

Great post! Phi is my favorite number! 1.61 something, I forget but doing it by memory hah. They also say the phi number applies to everything from  logarithmic spirals, sea shells and even “hot” bodies to things that we will find beautiful in nature.

This is a great post. I’m huge on my math facts on these things hah my only qualm is that this ration also applies to guys and I’m farrrrrrrrrrrr from having it apply to my face Oh well, can’t argue with numbers!

According to one I read, female nurses (of any race, and even when black or white) who approach babies only a few days old will have the babies stare more often at the nurses who’s faces fit that reported ratio.

I guess photoshop and and some of the best makeup artists creates beauty.  The angles at which these pictures are taken creates that ‘symmetry’ Have many of you seen these actresses in movies or in paparazzi shots. There’s your beauty.

adjectives are purely opinions. there will never be one woman that is the most beautiful that every single person on the earth can agree on.

It looks mostly like Charlize Theron to me. I think the most beautiful of this little experiment is Scarlett and Natalie’s mix. But beauty is completely abstract and subjective…so a “most beautiful” anything is impossible for all to agree.

Not all of the celebrities pictured in the experiment are 100% “white.” Like someone previously mentioned, Kristin Kreuk is mixed Chinese and I’m sure some of the others might also have biracial heritage. The final pic is pretty but can’t say the beautifulest. I actually think the first pic posted above of Aishwarya Rai, former Miss World, (also dubbed “the most beautiful woman in the world”) looks better than the end result pic. She just exuberates confidence, sultriness, and exotic beauty.

what i really want to see is a truly randomized sample, not just american/european celebrities (most of these women are of mixed ethnicities with predominant caucasian features, not really representative of other races)

Very interesting. The end result is very ideal. I noticed that the faces were white with few exceptions. I call bullshit.

I think all the women’s faces included are beautiful, but the result seems almost… too neutral, if that makes sense. =/

Having people in this study who look representative of their race is a different issue.

I just did a Google search for “the most beautiful woman in the world” and the majority of images that come up are of Aishwarya Rai.

Still, we have to keep in mind that this is, perhaps, the most beautiful AMERICAN face and what AMERICANS find aesthetically pleasing. If we did this with British/french/indian/etc. celebrities, the results would of course be different. I don’t think so much that all this is an attempt to define universal beauty but to show a composite of what one culture in a certain country finds attractive in a very general sense.

Aishwarya on the first photo has beautiful eyes. Without those eyes, she wouldn’t get that much of attention.

I didn’t know where this post was going to be about… all I know is that now I know why people are so attracted to my sister she looks so close to that final picture.

Also there is a very uniform idea of beauty among these women. They all have similar features and they are all light skinned women. I guess anything else isn’t beautiful at all. For example, I wanted to fixed my nose cuz i think it’s too big, but wen i went to the doc, he told me that according to my face, my nose is actually not too big. It only looks bigger because my bone between my eyes is not high enough. ( & well, I don’t hv any $ save up for this ne way so wen I heard I don’t really need it for the way I thought I need it, I kinda just put that idea away).

@BayCat - I went on that website and definitely reaffirmed that I personally find biracial individuals more attractive. I combined an Asian female and a black female, both who, in my opinion, were kinda “meh” and got what I perceive as an attractive person. So…that was cool. I guess I like my skin tones averaged out too! (must be why I think Indian and Middle Eastern women (and men!) are generally more attractive)

I’m starting to become “OK” with my nose, since I figured it fits my eyes and lips.
I like the ulzzang look with big eyes, small nose and thin lips, but I can’t fit that look perfectly because I don’t have a small nose or thin lips.
I’m gradually starting to accept this. I’ve seen cute/pretty girls with the smaller faces, but there are many Asian celebrities that have different kinds of faces (ie. Song Hye Kyo, Honey Lee, etc.), and they are still beautiful.
So you don’t need to have those specific features to be beautiful.
