As we all know, the economy sucks. My wife and I are fortunate to have enough money to be making ends meet, so I often feel kinda bad to complain about money. But at the same time it does quite suck.
Seeing as how I have only been out of the closet for 2 years or so, and I am only starting to build up my wardrobe as a female, it sucks to be short on money. I would “dress female” more often if I actually had some variety in my clothes. I wish I could afford Xanga Premium too…. So yeah, in other words it sucks to be stuck on a fairly limited budget, but we will survive until better job situations open up. Then I can splurge on girlyness.
My current debate, and one I would like feedback on- Halloween. I feel that I cannot particularly justify spending like $60-70 bucks on Halloween. Which is what I was estimating my Audrey Hepburn costume to cost.
Should I go for something cheaper and simpler? Any non-audrey hepburn ideas? I want fun, cheap, and girly ideas! Help me out readers!

What does your costume look like? Try to go to some thrift stores and find something. If you or your wife know how to sew, trying making your own costume. Or even try to find something cheap on ebay :] I’m gonna be looking on ebay for my costume.

Borrow friends! My friends and I have swapped tons of costumes, I mean hell, you only wear them once for a few hours. Ask around if anyone you know has what youre looking for since chances are, they’re not wearing the same thing this year as last!

I always make my Halloween costumes, or at least buy clothing that matches the costume. I dressed up as Link two Halloween ago and I bought this really cute green tunic for the top. Then I cut up a green t-shirt that I don’t wear anymore for a cap. Improvise!

get a cigarette holder, plain black dress, and pair of cheap pearls, then put your hair in a bun. That can cost way less than 60 bucks.

You can do amazing period costumes (80′s prom? hippie?) from goodwill stores. Vintage clothing places and consignment shops often have used halloween costumes available cheaper. How about borrow a costume from an out of town friend (so no one would be familiar with it?) A nice red or black formal dress from your closet or a friends + $20 nice fangs from a costume shop = vampire. And those fangs are reuseable to boot..and are great with regualr work clothes the week of Halloween to freak coworkers! A red dress + a cheap horns/tail set from costume shop = nice devil. I saw a “roll of TP” costume once made from a sheet of craft foam and a sharpie and glue.

I make my costume every year! I think it is a lot more exciting than just picking one up from the store, and you can also get something a lot more figure-flattering and tailored to your body. My biggest complaint with store-bought costumes is they never fit right. Find a dress you love and you can seriously make it into anything, with minimal sewing. This year, I’m being a native american. I bought a cheap(ish) brown dress, and am planning on just sewing some fringe to the bottom and collar and probably adding some beading. One year, I was a flapper and I did a similar thing, but just added some fringe to the whole dress. You could probably even hot glue gun it if you can’t sew. Long gloves and a cigarette holder and it’s really cute.
I think Aubrey Hepburn could definitely be done on a budget though. Places like Forever21 have really cheap black dresses and pearls.

try a haberdashery for some fake pearls and string them yourself on a bit of wire (bought there or from a craft shop/online) soooo much cheaper than buying the jewelery.

Same position, but somehow I’ll pull it off. Thrift stores and creativity are a must on tight budgets!
