Lee KiKwang, member of K-Pop group Beast, appeared on the Korean TV show ‘Hot Brothers’ last week, where he was given a makeover with an Afro wig and black facepaint and forced to eat watermelon in a “keep cool under pressure”-type stunt.
Apparently Lee was at the mercy of the show’s producers (and also, K-Pop stars are tightly controlled by their management, so he might not have had much say in whether he wanted to participate), but whoever is responsible for this should have known better. Issues of racism and xenophobia are complex in Asian countries, but there’s never any excuse for promoting this kind of stunt on TV.
I don’t want to post the actual photos of the watermelon part, because they’re kind of making me uncomfortable, but you can see them here if you wish.
Do you think the show was wrong to put this on the air, Lovelies?

I had to LOL.

I don’t believe they meant any harm by it.
It’s just a TV show, no one cares.
People these days look into things way too much.

OMG B2ST<3
Anyways, people in America are so uptight about these things.
THIS IS WHY WE CAN’T HAVE NICE THINGS.
Because someone will sue.

it figures the people saying “LOL THATS SO LIKE..FUNNY…i think??
OMG NO BIG DEAL El-OH-EL” ”People these days look into things way too much”

it doesn’t surprise me because people are idiots….but it’s so ridiculous that i actually just laugh at people that do things like that and the people who commented above me; cause, they’re ignorant. shows like this stay on because they entertain ignorant people…sighhh. What a shame.
You can’t expect people to understand something they refuse to understand. mmm.
daisy / 557 posts
@SUPletstake___surveys@xanga - I know you’re not but one reason that is is because white people would just let it go and laugh it off. things like this aren’t funny to black people…most of the time.
guest
@SUPletstake___surveys@xanga - You hit the nail on the head.
@Kestryl@xanga - Tell that to the rap industry.
guest
The T.V. producer knew about the racial implications and still went through with the show–that shows that he DID mean to insult certain people. He could’ve stopped it, but he didn’t. And Asian countries shouldn’t be given a free-pass for this stuff just because “it’s in their culture to be xenophobic.” That’s bullshit.
guest
No one gets upset until it effects them. It is what it is, so accept it or correct
it, either way move on.

This is kinda offensive :/

@kuroshitsuji@xanga - Nice things?
Did I just read that wrong? Since when does racism equal ‘nice things?’
guest
@burgerking781@xanga - My thoughts exactly.
guest
I can’t believe it … I never liked Korean pop stars, or their music … so excuse my bias.
Seriously? What if some non-Asian person in a tv show did a stunt like this, depicting the Asian stereotype. My goodness … So yes, this is not justified.
guest
@kuroshitsuji@xanga - No, because racist things are racist. Blackface was used in the past to prevent black people from being able to be in shows; why hire a black person when you can just put a white person in blackface? Same with how back in Shakespeare’s time, in plays, men would play both men and women to keep women from being in plays. If someone did that today, it would be wrong.
And considering that Beast plays music started by black as well as are being produced with black people (they work with American companies that are mostly black owned), it’s disrespectful. But then again, why am I surprised. The leader of a group in Korea that is suppose to represent the Girl’s Generation said that Alicia Keys was pretty “for a black person.” Why expect Koreans to adhere to the same racial standards that we expect most people in the world to?
guest
@SUPletstake___surveys@xanga - I agree.

@Momo_Wakahisa@xanga - yeahhh! tell it!

@aWishfulCynic@xanga - What sucks is that we have asians depicting the asian stereotype anyway. I immediately thought of the asian man on MadTV who does that “UH OH HOT DOG!” joke thing. I don’t think any of it is right…
orchid / 205 posts
@SUPletstake___surveys@xanga - ”i bet if they, or anyone else, were portraying a ‘white’ person, they would have no issues presented to them.”
Because koreans glorify whites. You know whats the “ideal image” for a korean girl? Its a white girl.
So of course no one would have a problem.
What I do like about most asians, is their ability to copy black culture (hip hop, rap, DJing) and then turn around and be racist towards the people that created the style and music that they admire and try so hard to duplicate.

this is not him, but the producers. it’s true, Asians shouldn’t get an exception just bc their culture is very xenophobic, but it’s like what can we do… it’s just sad and unfortunate how ignorant Asians can be. I only say this because I am Asian-American myself and sometimes I get embarrassed for our race…especially Koreans. I apologize on behalf of my motherland… -_-

I’m always middle ground about black face. I know the historic past of it and everything but I still had a chuckle when it said “forced to eat watermelon in a “keep cool under pressure”-type stunt.”.

sunflower / 353 posts
They’re just ignorant. The reason they can do stuff like this in S.K. is because their population doesn’t contain enough of a Black community to create any kind of backlash. It may be just fun and games to some people, but others use this kind of ‘entertainment’ to justify their own prejudice. They don’t understand U.S. History and why blackface is especially offensive to Black people, and some of them don’t care if it is offensive.
But to this day I don’t understand where the watermelon thing came from. I’m half-Black and none of my dad’s family has this obsession with it. Is it a Southern thing? I even have Black friends that don’t like watermelon. I don’t know why but something about the watermelon makes me feel more uncomfortable. I guess it seems to say, “This is what Black people do. They sit and eat watermelon.” Seriously…maybe in a circle of friends but not on TV. That’s just lame.

@Momo_Wakahisa@xanga - That we expect most people in the world to? I’m pretty sure Americans are the only country who act like they have a stick up their asses all the time. How come you guys can have shows with people saying “ching chong poak frai raice” and we can’t do anything?
They preach about “freedom” as much as they can. Freedom of speech, freedom of press, etc…but when someone says something taboo or as you say, disrespectful, everyone jumps down your throat. OHH YOU CAN’T SAY/DO THAT. What happened to all those rights, huh?
Learn to be made fun of, because everyone does. No matter what your race, religion, sex, orientation. Especially if it’s comedic. If you can’t get through being made fun of lightly, I’m not sure how you can handle being made fun of threateningly. Besides, being so serious just gives you nasty wrinkles.

Koreans idolize white people? Korean girls want to be white?

If you want to stop racism then DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT. Most white people don’t know that things like this aren’t funny because they aren’t told so– Which sounds ridiculous, and IT IS. But it’s true. We’re different countries. I think people don’t realize that because we all sound like “ching chang chong” or some other shit they come up with. I agree that the producers shouldn’t have made him done it, but it’s not his fault, is it? Like others said some find it funny. As a joke. Whites get made fun of, Asians get made fun of, gingers, Mexicans, black people, everyone do.

@MyLife2Live@xanga - I kind of agree with you on that one. I wasn’t too

@Jessica - I was talking more about the watermelon part. Then again we have to remember this isn’t in the U.S. so we don’t know how much exactly they know about blackface or consider the black community in their county (and how it would effect something like this). I honestly don’t think it was their pure intention was to be racist. Some people find it funny and in Korean it might just be funny to them. A comedian did it a while ago on TV in the U.S. For her it was more of a shock value though.
guest
some people just need to calm down.
you don’t see me screaming RACIST whenever someone makes a joke about all asians being same eating rice and bowing, and looking like -_- . it’s called a stereotype, and believe it or not, they emerge when enough people are associated with it.

@Momo_Wakahisa@xanga - SNSD’s members have been…They’re obsessively loved by a lot of people and hated by an equal amount. I don’t really think you can judge kpop and its culture by them.
In regards to this whole thing…I don’t listen to B2ST’s music, but I do know how tightly controlled kpop stars are, so I feel like the fault is definitely not on him but on the producers of the show.
guest
@sincerelySUNKiSSED@xanga - Oh, I don’t blame him. I’m just saying that it IS racist. The company should apologize, as well as the show for putting him up to it. And just don’t do it again. That’s all I’m asking for.
And I’m actually well aware of the Stand and Sones situation. It’s actually quite scary to me. I couldn’t hate or love a group THAT much to be willing to hurt or be hurt by people for it. And the point that I was making by mentioning SNSD is that they ARE suppose to “represent” the girls of Korea. That’s one reasons their antis hate them so much; they feel as though they don’t properly represent what their name says. So I know that I can’t judge an entire culture based on it. But because they are the FACES of Korea’s Girl’s Generation, they should be careful about what they say and how they present themselves.
It’s kinda like how Bush made Americans look like idiots because he was the FACE of our country. Should people look at him and say that our entire country is like that? No, but because he was the FACE of our country, he needed to represent our country in a intelligent and mature way (which he failed to do). It’s kinda like that.

I support free speech, but not when it harms groups of people.
I’m Korean and live in Seoul; many of my friend’s mothers dislike black people, thinking that the media portrayal of them is accurate (ie, either really fucking dumb and ape-like, or violent misogynistic gangsters/sailor-mouthed hoes). One of my friend’s mothers is completely fine with people who are gay, yet does not wish for her children to interact with black people (keep in mind: South Korea’s extremely conservative, so this speaks volumes). It sounds far-fetched, but native Koreans don’t have much, if any, contact with black people. So for many, what they see in the media is the only aspect they ever get to see.
However, keep in mind, xenophobia and racism aren’t genetic; they’re products of nurture, which includes not only the parents but also surrounding peers as well as the environment. Just because someone looks East Asian does not mean they’ll be xenophobic and/or racist.
tulip / 8 posts
@xxyurikim@xanga - Koreans have no right to judge. They believe black people are violent, lazy, and so forth, but I watch a lot of korean films and they just as violent if no more so than black people . Especially when they treat the women. They beat them up, kick stomp them etc. I heard domestic violence is a big issue there so who the hell do they think they are? There gangstar films are very violent they fight with knives, yell, curse, etc. especially when dealing with youth violence. They always depict the youth as lazy dropouts who want to join a gang . The people your mom hangs out with have no right to criticize. They are just to lazy to want to really understand black people or any people. or anything for that matter. They would rather watch it on t.v. Tell your moms friend that next time.

sunflower / 368 posts
@blackgold - I’m a girl, idiot. And oh you are so sweet.
guest
@Momo_Wakahisa@xanga - I’m not defending racism in Asia or anything, but as for the chick from “Girl’s Generation”–Koreans have a very specific set of beauty standards, including pale skin, and a black girl wouldn’t really fit into them. Times are changing and Korea’s becoming more Westernized (in good ways and in bad), but it’ll be a while before standards of beauty expand–after all, as far as I know, people are more attracted to features that they are used to (which is why people looking for partners tend to go for people that resemble them), and while Korea does have black people living here, it’s still not a very large percentage.
That said, the Girl’s Generation girl could and should have done much better in phrasing what she said and put more thought into how she might be offending people. There’s no way what she said could be construed in any way other than racist and inconsiderate. :/ It’s really too bad that people in Korea don’t speak up about racism, but I’m not sure how someone would get attention if they tried to unless they were really famous already–and as we can see, it’s the famous people that are making the racist comments.
aaaaand i pretty much just wrote a novel. >.< I hope that wasn’t too much trouble to readdd.

I don’t find this particularly funny, but as a fellow Korean I mean it when I say they really didn’t mean any harm. Think about it– how would the Western culture try to portray a “typical” Asian person? By wearing a kimono or doing that bowing pose with your hands in front of you (which, by the way, only CERTAIN Asian countries actually practice). If we’re gonna start war about this show, let’s go all the way and make controversy out of every little shit out there.

@xxyurikim@xanga - I refuse to accept that all Koreans are so antagonistic towards black people as you seem to believe. It’s true that most native Koreans don’t get much opportunity to become familiar with foreigners. But things are changing, in case you didn’t notice. There are TV shows dedicated to letting foreigners living in Korea speak their minds, and there are Korean celebrities who are married to foreigners trying to promote the idea of acceptance and open-mindedness. South Korea USED to be a very conservative country indeed, but just because a few of your acquaintances happen to be painfully racist, that doesn’t mean every other South Korean thinks the same way about the black people. There’s something called LITERATURE, which educated Koreans will be exposed to. You don’t have to go to Africa to rid yourself of racism. It’s called common sense.

There is a lack of black people in Korea. And because of this, they don’t have to worry about a Korean black rebellion of the things they put in their media. Korea has also never enslaved black people like America has. They clearly don’t understand how offensive stuff like that could be. They probably saw it on some American form of media and thought to copy it because “America is powerful and cool.”
America also does a good job in distributing media all around the world. Honestly, any place that isn’t used to having a shit ton of races all living together will not understand how certain things can tick people off in a society. Other countries will simply think “Hey, this is pretty funny. I don’t really get it and I don’t know any black people but let’s do it too.”

i never said racism only came in one form or whatever you’re trying to say? you’re putting words in my mouth in order to make some type of point. my point was: black people have always been discriminated against, and that’s life..whatever..but because of that, we don’t think it’s funny or cute or “adorable” like some other people think it is. White people, in my experiences [which is a lot because my family is white, lived in majority white place] , when they are being treated wrong because of their race they think it’s funny–because it doesn’t happen often .

I am really surprised at the magnitude and passion of all these comments. It’s really pretty overwhelming, because many people do bring up some valid points.
I dont think what Kikwang did was something of his choosing and he probably did not mean to offend anyone. I am sure that the producers and other band members also did not mean to offend anybody, but it is unfortunate that they have. I think what we have to understand here is that these people are entertainers, so they try to do things that people will find humorous or interesting.
Playing on a stereotype wasnt the best idea, but I dont think we should be accusing the race/culture as dumb or ignorant or anything like that. The endorsement of stereotypes happens everywhere. In America, you can find plenty of examples of this. For example, Anjelah Johnson’s impersonations of nail salon workers, which really offended a large Vietnamese community but did not receive this kind of attention, because it was “funny” and “sooooo right”.
Many people in many different countries have slightly racist tendencies, but that does not mean the people or their cultures are stupid.
It is nice to see that so many people have opinions and can express them here on Lovelyish though.
