Check out my new TOMS! (above) I’ve been so excited to try them, especially because they’re for a good cause (for every pair you buy, TOMS donates a pair to a child in need). So I finally broke down and ordered this pair online. They’re a new version of the Classic TOMS that’s made with “perforated nylon,” so your feet can breathe.
This is how the shoe looked on the website. I chose red because I wanted a splash of color, and because it’s a color that’s versatile; I wear a lot of black and neutrals, so red can complement most of my wardrobe.
They shipped promptly from California, and it took about a week for them to make it to New York. TOMS uses UPS shipping, so if you’re like me, you can obsessively e-stalk your package as it’s shuttled from warehouse to warehouse.
The shoes are pretty true to size; I usually wear a 7, so I ordered a 7, and while they were tight at first, they start stretching out right away. I’d advise you to order your normal size!
First impressions: the shoe comes up pretty high on the top part of your foot, which looks a little odd, and it took me some getting used to. But comfort-wise, these shoes are in-freaking-credible! As you can see in the pics, they have a foamy white sole, and it makes a really comfortable cushion for your foot. I wore them as I schlepped through the subway system to work today, and I felt like I was walking on a cloud instead the grungy L train.
As far as what to wear them with, I’m sporting skinny jeans today, but I think I’ll also try them with black shorts and maybe a miniskirt. You probably wouldn’t want to wear them with anything too boot-cut or pajama-y, because a relaxed-style shoe like this might look like a slipper with a billowy skirt or pant.
Overall, I’d encourage you to check out TOMS for yourself; they come in a variety of colors and styles, so even if you’re not into the look of regular TOMS, you can get something that laces up, glitters, or even a wedge.
Have you tried TOMS, Lovelies?

Those are cute! They look so comfy too. Are they pricey?

Mehh, I know they’re for a good cause and all, and I think that’s great, but I don’t like them. The toe part looks off to me (how it looks folded). I dunno. Just not a big fan. I’m sure they’re comfortable though.

Yay Toms

@mis23marie - these were about $50! Some of them, like the boots or the sparkly ones, are more.

i hear they’re pretty pricey…

I am Birkenstock girl but they do look comfy!

@Jessica - That’s reasonable for me. I really like the red with white stripes, or the yellow and white striped ones! When I start my job, those will definitely be on my wishlist!

I think they’re kind of ugly and expensive, but they are for a good cause.

They look terrible. It looks like someone took a white shoe, hastily wrapped it in orange nylon fabric and hot-glue-gunned the material together to form the shoe.
If it’s for a good cause, I’d rather just donate money to the cause. They can keep the shoes.
guest
Ugly. I’d rather buy a new pair of shoes for a child in need than to buy those things, but I suppose I could donate the TOMS as well. It would be two donations at once.

They are ugly…

i think they’re cute! i’m not so sure i could pull them off, but on the right person – definitely cute

dont like them AT ALL.

Question: What are your feet like? I know that’s an odd question, but I’ve always been wary of trying out TOMS–they looked kind of wide to me, and I have narrow feet.
orchid / 180 posts
@aznbunny604@xanga - It’s very difficult to get people to donate money just for a good cause–they like to see something tangible in return.

they look like nurse shoes. ugly to me. sanuks for the win

They look the shoes that old ladies wear in China.
With $40, I’m sure you can get yourself 3 or 4 pairs of canvas shoes from Wal-Mart. At least I got mine for, like, $7 there…
guest
I would’ve bought them just to support their humanitarian cause. Great to hear that they’re a comfy shoe as well, now I’m definitely getting a pair.

I want a pair soo bad. (:

LOVE them. you will grow to love them too, but at a cost, an ugly foot tan LOL. T__T i got an ugly foot tan, but i don’t care. i’m still wearing my tomss all the time.

They’re okay, but they’re too expensive for a pair of hipster shoes.
guest
I hate those shoes. They’re popping up everywhere, and people are making themselves feel good because it’s “for a good cause.” Do you know how much further $50 can go than a pair of poorly made shoes? It can keep five people that are HIV positive healthy for a month- and that’s only one example.
Another thing I despise about the entire corporation is the whole marketing scheme behind it. Do you actually think those shoes were $25 to produce? Not even close. Toms is selling shoes and making tons of money, and everyone thinks they’re this charitable organization.
Did you know that if you buy Toms in a store (like Mountain High Outfitters, for example) you have to specifically request that Toms donate a pair of shoes and sign a form? They don’t exactly publicize that. Also, their “One Day Without Shoes” was an absolute joke. People went without shoes to “raise awareness”, but did Toms give people any information on how to further help underpriveleged people in third world countries? Nope. The only way was to buy their shoes.
Aaaand the shoes are absolutely hideous.

I’ve actually never heard of them. If they’re comfy and not too expensive, I’ll consider them.

Yay! Thanks Jessica
I’ve been contemplating getting a pair for a few months now!

I don’t really like them, but the wedges look pretty nice.

Why is everyone hating on Toms?
Who cares…

I love Toms:D

they look like they’ll go out of style soon, so iuno if i want to chip out that money

@PlainXJane@xanga - I have narrow feet, too, and my TOMS fit perfectly. I would think a wider foot would have a harder time. I don’t think you have anything to worry about.

I’ve wanted a pair for the longest time!

I love my TOMS
They’re really comfortable.

as soon as I’m working again, I plan to finally get myself a pair.

I’ve wanted a pair for a long time. My younger sister bought a pair and she loves them. She even worn them all in the house. Haha. They’re just way to expensive. But hopefully, when I can get a job I’ll most likely break down and get a pair. Hehe. Glad to know they’re comfy. Except my sister told me they were tight and I should buy a size up and you said they fit true to size. Kinda torn. Hopefully, I’ll figure shit out when I finally decide to order a pair.

I can’t help but hate the hipsterness of Toms. Plus they are fucking stupid looking. Sorry.

It’s good that they’re comfy. My college’s campus is huge and it’s always hard to find cute, but comfortable, shoes that won’t kill my feet while I walk across campus.
guest
Oh lordy, I hope Toms don’t turn into the new Uggs.
Can you imagine?
guest
I just got my first pair of TOMS and I LOVE them!!! They’re super comfortable and I think they’re cute!
guest
@dieindiet@xanga - THANK YOU!
i don’t understand the obsession with them, i think they’re fugly and low quality. of course everyone backs their argument with “well they donate shoes to people in need!”
let’s see, third world countries are crippled with disease, poverty, malnutrition, in some cases genocide, and you’re worrying about SHOES? nice going, genius. give your money to kiva, don’t waste it on this bogus, backwards, fake-philanthropic company.
guest
I love my Toms. They’re very comfortable, and if you’re in the market for a new pair of shoes, why not also get a pair for someone in need? They’re much better for your feet than, say, Converse because they have really good arch support. The only downside is that they do get a wee bit smelly, but nothing that setting them in the sun and adding a little baking soda can’t fix.

Those are actually kinda cute(:

@dieindiet@xanga - yup

@dieindiet@xanga - You said it best.
Not to mention those are ugly shoes.
cherry blossom / 30 posts
@dieindiet@xanga - I remember reading an article about TOMS’ business model and how they are only making enough money to slowly expand their donation locations and such (If I find it online, I’ll post it in another comment). They don’t have a fancy office–they work out of a warehouse with no air-conditioning, they nearly insist their employees walk or bike to work, and they are huge on recycling. They aren’t by any means millionaires, and while their shoes are expensive, keep in mind that you are covering the cost of producing two pairs of shoes, one of which you keep. You are buying a product AND donating, not just donating. If you don’t like the shoes or you’re offended by the hipster aspect of them then yes, you can donate elsewhere, but eventually, you’ll probably be buying shoes for yourself too, from someone else who probably makes use of sweatshops in one of those countries. That’s just the way it is. The world will never be perfect, and people sometimes need an incentive to give, but I don’t think we should be hating on a company that is trying very hard to have a positive impact on both people and the environment.
cherry blossom / 30 posts
@shesakillerqueeen@xanga - In those countries, without shoes, the people often develop diseases of the feet that prevent them from supporting their families through farming or walking to gain access to clean wells and medical treatment miles away, or even running from said genocide. So yes, I’d say shoes are very important.

I like my TOMS. The first time I saw them, I thought they were ugly, but then, they kind of grew on me. Also, I don’t own the typical pairs. I own a few pairs of boots, including a really cute wrap boot that can be worn over skinny jeans or with skirts (HOWEVER, I have flat feet, and there is zero support in this shoe. I would recommend the newer styles, because they are starting to include better insoles in those). They’re unique and for a good cause, so I wear them with pride. Sometimes I lament that they are becoming a “hipster trend…” but I think I’m a lot more annoyed by the people who are annoyed. If you don’t like them, don’t wear them, simple as that.

I hate the idea of TOMS. If you want to help a child, buy a better quality pair of shoes and send them through a program yourself.
guest
@dieindiet@xanga - Word. Exactly how I feel about TOMS and American Apparel’s “no child labor/all in America” thing. Just trendy/rich hipsters using charity as an excuse to be selfish.
guest
I’d honestly rather just donate my own shoes. I hear they’re pricey and honestly not very cute. I know it’s for a good cause and that’s awesome, but the people getting the shoes could also use the money going into them…
guest
Wow those are pretty ugly.

@PlainXJane@xanga - i have narrow feet too, actually! and the TOMS fit great.

@dieindiet@xanga - This. Totally agree.

I just ordered my first pair online 2 days ago! Anxiously awaiting their arrival!

I have never heard of Tom’s. I have a shoe business, and this might work for me. I have been interested in a lew line for 8 years. Actually a few new lines. This would fit with my demographic. If you have any more thought please let me know.
