I have always been smaller than most. I’m barely 5’2″, and I’ve been very thin for most of my life. I never really tried or anything, I’m just a very petite person, you know? I have a very small frame. That sounds like it would be something great, but there’s a catch: My “very small frame” can hardly handle any extra weight before I start to look like I’m overweight.
Currently I weigh about 125, which I know doesn’t sound like a lot in the long run. But I’m used to being around 108-112. And my question is, which one is right? How do you know what weight you’re supposed to be at? BMI charts confuse the heck out of me, and all of my friends say that I look fine.
I really just want to be healthy. I want to find a size that I’m comfortable at. I want to have energy and be happy without having to worry about what I’m putting in my mouth all the time.
What do you think, Lovelies? Do any of you have this problem?
guest
I just checked a BMI chart online and you can actually weigh between 110-130 lbs and be healthy.
guest
First ask yourself this: do you feel your healthiest at this weight? I don’t encourage stressing over fixing the “flaws” you may or may not see in the mirror-but if you’re genuinely pleased with yourself and feel as though you treat your body right, then I see no reason for you to push your body to lose weight. 125 is perfectly healthy for your height! If you’re happy and are filled with energy and feel that you are eating right and are at your healthiest, then you’re absolutely golden

I am 5’6 and am 103lbs…too thin right? But in all honesty, like you I have a small frame. I am perfectly healthy, I dont diet and I feel fine. When I gain 5 lbs (which is very difficult to do) it looks more like 10. I totally get what your talking about. I say just do you. If you are fine thinner, then be thinner, if you feel like you should gain, then gain a little. The goo thing about those of us will small frames, we never look as big as we think we do, our bones wont allow it.

Consult your doctor.

I’m also 5’2 but I’ve realized that with my body type anywhere below 135 pounds makes me look positively scrawny. BMI lies. If I were to reach the 95-105 pounds it claims i should be I would look like skeletor lmao

Why does this seem like there was a post on this already. . . hmmm. . .

I’m 5’2″ and 108 pounds, and I’m on the lower end of “Normal” on the BMI scale. I don’t look scrawny at all though, just petite.
guest
Yea girl. I’m 5′ sooo anything shows. When I’m at college I work out more, and don’t have anything extra, but at home I get a little cushion around my hips. I can’t decide which version of myself I like better. As long as I eat healthy and exercise, I’m happy with who I am. I’m afraid of what will happen to us small framers when we get middle-aged! Oh well.

BMI scale when it comes down to it is pretty useless. It’s only useful when you’re trying to generalize and put people in boxes, but when it comes to figuring out your own personalized weight you need to take many more numbers into consideration. Frame size (indicated by wrist), body fat to muscle, waist-to-hips, and on and on and on.
I’m 5’3″, but not ‘traditionally’ petite because I have a large frame. My legs are actually the only petite part about me and for the most part I don’t need petite tops.
According to my BMI, people would think I might be pretty big, but when people guess my weight they usually guess about 40lbs less than I am.
In other words, I don’t look my BMI.

i feel like i know what you mean. these days, i don’t know whether i should be considered fat or thin. it depends who i’m being compared to, and there’s quite a range.
rose / 847 posts
I’m actually the same height and weight right now. I’m looking to lose some weight this summer, but it wouldn’t be life or death if I didn’t. I agree that BMI isn’t as reliable as people once thought it was; keep in mind that BMI does a pretty lame job of accounting for muscle mass, which varies from person to person and weighs more than fat. Something found to be more reliable right now is waist to hip ratio though.
Based on that, I have a bit of weight to lose (and what’s worse is that I tend to balloon at different points in the day, so even that can be mildly unreliable depending on what I’ve eaten or done throughout the day) to put me in a “safer” zone. It’s not an urgent need, but it’d make me feel better about myself too.
guest
BMI charts are useless. It doesn’t tell you how healthy a person is only whether you are “normal” or underweight/overweight/obese. So don’t even worry about that.
The thing about being at a healthy weight is that you need to eat right and be active. Very few people are bless with lifelong genetics that keep them as thin as they were when they were younger. This doesn’t mean you have to always watch what you eat, 24-7 and get obsessive over it. If you do everything in MODERATION you will be fine. If you get enough veggies/fruit/water a day and are at least moderately active (walk, use stairs, whatever) your body will find its healthy weight naturally.
To be honest, I don’t think it takes more than that. It’s easy to think it’s so complicated to get your body to a healthy weight but, when it comes down to it, weight isn’t even a true indicator of health. After all, muscle does weigh more than fat (something I think everyone ought to keep in mind).
guest
I’m the exact same size – and 125 is a little heavy for my height/bone structure. Maybe you could do light workouts, just to tone up? Toning makes a world of a difference.
guest
i have just about the same height/weight stats as you, and wrestle with the same question. what i read on a medical chart though was that you can determine if you have a small frame/large frame by measuring the circumference of your wrist. if it’s more than 6 inches, you have a larger frame and can add about 10% of your weight within that BMI range. if it’s less than 6 inches, you have a smaller frame and can subtract about 10%. my wrist is under 6″, plus i’ve long known that i could lose some, so i want to drop about 10-15 by this fall.
guest
no i dont have this problem, i stopped caring about my weight after the doctor told me that i was creeping into over weightness, well long story short i havent stepped on a scale in two years
at 125 you have nothing to worry about even at 5’2″ if you want to stay small just exercise and getting bigger as you age is natural
guest
i guess everyone is different… i’m 5ft 2.5 and i weigh 106 lbs… i need to be more toned though, so i definitely feel like i can be healthier. if you are 125 and have a lot of lean muscle mass, then that might be fine. but if you’re 125 and have a high % body fat, then you may have a problem. it all depends on the weight distribution. you should ask your doctor if you’re unsure about your body weight.
guest
If you know that you’re eating sensibly, getting some good exercise and that you have a happy social life, then chances are you may be healthy.
guest
i know how you feel to most im tiny but to me i just wanna lose 5 lbs :p
guest
i’m sure you’re healthy
it’s just that when you’re small, a little weight gain can appear a lot on your body
i totally have the same problem as you
guest
Same yo.I’m 5’2 and a half maybe, and I weigh around 90 lbs but I seriously look about 15 lbs heavier. My mom and I both have a really small frame and EVERY lb shows man
guest
same with me! whenever i gain weight its always my stomach and face first so its super noticable. my weight fluctuates a lot depending on if i’m living at home or school so i try not to care so much until i actually notice a difference in how my body functions. i think you know what weight is best for you when you don’t stress about your body that much.
guest
your overweight your suppose to be 109-120. something like that i remember.
because i am 5’2 so right now im underweight because im 105.but i have alot of fat in me but then yeah lool i dont know.i just know your suppose to be 109 and 120. i think or was it 115. i forgot.but yeahs. hope you find out soon.(:

BMI doesn’t count for anything
try hip waist ratio, it usually works better. I know what you mean. My BMI is healthy but BMI doesn’t take bone frame into account so I’m pretty much not as healthy. There are more elaborate charts out there that take bone frame and weight and tallness into account. I have one sitting around somewhere

@AnOldCliche_xo@xanga - BMI doesn’t count for much if you have a smaller frame or larger frame than normal

I have a friend that’s 4’11 and has this problem (although I don’t think she realizes it yet). She even still wears a size THREE in shorts (pretty tiny I think) but she’s gained away over the last couple years and she looks very strange. Almost like she SHOULDN’T be wearing a size three.

I’m 5’8″ with a small/medium frame and weigh 130 so I don’t see how you can be 5’2″ with a small frame and weigh 125 o.O

You sound *exactly* like me
I’m also barely 5’2″Last year, I weighed 125 lbs and I felt really uncomfortable at that weight. For some reason, last summer I dropped back to 110 (I only exercised a bit more, and wasn’t expecting to lose weight at all. I also had my first job, so the added stress probably aided in my weight loss), which is the weight I feel fits me best. I know how you feel, because being petite and having some extra pounds just doesn’t work. But the good news is our bodies tend to lose weight quickly by just exercising and eating right. And just find where you’re happy, because there is a wide range of weight you can be and still be considered “healthy”
guest
I eat anything i want, and exercise once a week.(if i;m in the mood lol) and i stay at 140-145. (i’m 5’9”) Maybe i’m just lucky, but i think the less you stress about your weight the easier it is for you to stay the way you want to.
Anyway, cupcakes anyone? ;D

If you feel healthy and eat a sensible diet and are active, then I’d say that’s more important than the numbers. Just find out where you’re comfortable. BMI charts are extremely overrated in my opinion; they are just one small piece of a very large puzzle.
guest
You’re just like me, I’m half an inch below 5’2″ and I’m right at 108, rather that’s what I’m used to being. Even if my weight goes up to 115, it’s hugely noticeable and I panic. The BMI chart says that 115 is perfectly normal for that height, but on me it’s really just not okay.
But you know what, don’t listen to the charts or anyone else other than your body and yourself. If you feel happy and that you have energy, then stay at your current weight. If that’s not making you happy, then maybe start running or something. The BMI charts really don’t account for a lot of variables so it’s not the end-all-be-all measurement of health. Just remember that
guest
I would most definitely measure your level of health by Body Fat Percentage.
For women, I think anything greater than 12% and less than 25% is healthy.
BMI charts are useless.
guest
kinda. i always look like i’m skinny even if i’m overweight. i’m 5’8″ and have a medium frame, so i guess it just doesn’t show as much when i gain weight.
guest
125 for your height is overweight!
guest
You’re overweight if you’re verging on 300 lbs. seriously?
guest
ugh! I know exxactly how you feel, I’m 4’10″ at 115lbs…my doctor says im still underweight for my height but that doesnt make any sense to me, I swear I look like a fatty
guest
125 is fine four your height. So is 112 and 108. If you wanted to stay at 125, you’d be fine. If you wanted to lose back to 108-112 you’d be fine as well.
I understand being uncomfortable with gaining weight. I’m 5’5″. My normal weight is around 150 but I feel most comfortable comfortable in the mid 130′s. I have a medium frame, so people tell me that my weight gain is noticeable, but it’s not that bad. But obviously I perceive the weight gain differently. When I gain weight I know it’s time to start exercising again, because that’s usually the reason why I’ve gained. I do that before thinking about changing my diet.
So I’d suggest starting to exercise if you don’t already. You can very easily shed some unwanted pounds but just moving around a little. Especially in the summer.
guest
I went with my mother to the doctor the other day, and there happened to be a BMI chart on the wall. I’m 5’3, 108 pounds and was suprised to see that I could reach up to 130 and still be considered a normal weight. If I get over 112, I feel uncomfortable. Looking through all of these comments, it seems to be the general consensus that as long as you are comfortable and feel good in your skin, you’re fine. Go you!
guest
lol yeah I’m 5’2″ and I go from looking skinny to chubby in less than ten pounds’ space. It’s especially funny now that I’m pregnant. For months all I heard was, “Are you eating? You’re so little!” and then within a week’s time (not exaggerating!) that changed to, “Are you delivering tomorrow? You’re huge!”
guest
i think 108 is plenty for your height. i weigh around 101 (46kg) and i’m 5ft 6.
just go with whichever weight you feel most comfortable at.
guest
I’m really petite, so I can relate to this. I think the most I’ve ever weighed is about 111, and that sounds like too little, but at 4’11″, it looked like a bit more on me. Actually, it was probably result of my horrible diet, so once I gave up drinking a two-liter bottle of soda every day, and eating better (not living off of popcorn and ramen), I lost about 15 pounds and I like how I look better now. My boobs are no longer gigantic-looking 34Ds, and my thighs don’t touch anymore at all. I definitely agree, even a small weight gain looks a lot more obvious when you’re on the petite side.

hey, it is hard, I understand. I’m just under five feet tall. If I gain two pounds, it shows. It’s a struggle!
There’s nowhere for it to go.
guest
I’m almost 5’4″ but I weight between 103 – 107 lbs. When I gain a bit, I feel like it all goes to my stomach and arms and legs. I still eat the same things and exercise fairly often though; I’ve just always been underweight according to the BMI charts so I sort of stopped looking at it lol.
guest
@karen_01@xanga - me tooo -_-

Do what you feel you look best in and are healthy at the same time.
guest
I’m with you! Every time I eat a full meal it seems like I gain a little bit of weight. Yeah, I’m 5’2 and weigh about 115, but I feel like I look like I weigh about 10-20 pounds more than that. Very frustrating. But you should be at a healthy weight, I guess it all depends on your individual body, though.
guest
as long as you feel healthy and happy, then you are the right weight.
when I read the title, I thought to myself how I am very skinny but I feel like I have a “fat face” meaning I have a babyface, chubby cheeks and stuff.
guest
The correct amount is whatever makes you feel comfortable while still being healthy. If you felt better about yourself at 112, then try to get back to that number, if you’re fine at 125, then stick with that. The only opinion that should matter is your own.
guest
I’m 5’2, and I look best around 95 from my experience, which seems very thin. But in honestly, on my body structure, it’s the right way to go.
I think I weigh around 105-107 right now, and I look big. It’s so weird, because I should weigh 110 and be average right? Nope, I just every pound show. It sucks being petite sometimes!
guest
As long as your comfortable with yourself, in my opinion. If you’re happy with how you feel, then you’re good. If not, do something about it
Numbers don’t mean everything; keep in mind the standard charts are very generalized, and every person is very specific.
guest
well…all health practitioners / doctorswould say you are just fine..As u know from xanga..many women are never satisfied with their body or weight. We can even be totally eating disordered, but doctors nor anyone would ever notice because we are not technically underweight yet…not skinny enough. So.. whatever weight you feel better at is all up to you. FOR me, 5’5″ tall, I hate being over 130.. I feel like a blimp if I gain 5 lbs.. I have been 122 to 139 over the past 3 years..up and down.. I am under 130 now.. and my dream goal is 112 lbs!! I liked when I was 118 lbs….10 yrs ago. lots of running got me there.
Good nutrition, antioxidants, real food, and daily exercise are what matters most anyhow..in the long run.
Weigh what you want to weigh.
oh and.. 5 or 8 lbs up or down makes all the difference in the world in how you favorite clothes fit.. I just fit into all my Size 4 skirts again! wootwoot.
guest
Don’t worry about your weight unless you start packing on the pounds.
What matters is that you’re healthy, getting regular exercise, and eating a well balanced diet.
guest
“My “very small frame” can hardly handle any extra weight before I
start to look like I’m overweight. “
that sounds just like me! i love food, but i have to eat MUCH smaller portions than everyone else if i want to maintain my weight. if i eat a normal-sized portion i start to gain weight. it’s crazy. D:
guest
I’m pretty much your same height and 125 is my goal weight bc it’s smack in the middle of the healthy range for our BMI. You’re fine. Your waist should be no more than half your height, but I’m assuming you’re fine. As long as you feel healthy, don’t worry about your size being that weight, I have no idea what you look like, but I’m sure you look great. : ) @lilmysslaura@xanga - What BMI calculator are you using?! She is *not* overweight in any way shape or form.
guest
i’m the same height as you and i’m 108lbs.
not that you should hate yours, just try and eat less snacks or be a little bit more active if you feel you’re gaining, if you’re usually comfortable then full on dieting wouldn’t be appropriate, and it seems like you don’t want to, either – which is sensible
guest
BMI charts usually run way high for slim individuals.. But for the average person they can be beneficial.
(I personally think that BMI is a pretty useless, the only reason I use it is to compare a models/celebrities with my own (you can figure out how much “Kate Moss” would weight at 5’2 by finding the weight that corresponds to her current BMR)).
At 5’2 and 125 lb your BMI is 22.9 (which is with in normal range (normal as defined: 18.5 – 24.9).
In medicine, Standard Body Weight is calculated as follows: (for women), 5′ (five foot tall) corresponds to 100 pounds and for every inch after that they add five pounds. However, Standard does not mean “ideal”. The Ideal Body Weight, which corresponds to a persons ‘set point’ (where they naturally fall), is a number unique to your individual. (IBW can be 98% to 110% of the Standard body weight)
At 5’2 your standard weight would be 110 pounds, and your IBW could be like 107.8 or like 120. (I think I calculated that right)
Personally I think that there are large errors in the entire ‘BMI’/SBW/IBW thing.. Ones weight is influenced by so many factors (lean body mass, water retention, metabolism, genes, stress, bone frame, food intake, supplement intake, ect); that it should only be put to a ‘range’ or ‘number’ by a very experienced clinician operating on a case by case basis.
If you would like to play with the BMI/ Check the calculations for yourself here is a nice link: http://www.nhlbisupport.com/bmi/

Don’t listen to BMI! Especially if you’re short.
I’d say the weight you feel best at. The weight at which you’re doing physical activities you enjoy and eating foods you love- some healthy, some not.
guest
Probably if u just learn how to read a BMI chart you’re problem will be solved. Either that, or stop obsessing over body image like its the be all and end all…cuz its not.
guest
I think you should be in the 108-112 range, because I’m 5′ 7 1/2″ and 122lb! But I dunno, because everyone says I’m ‘damn skinny.’ Maybe a nutritionist’s help should be enlisted?
guest
I sound like you! But you know what sucks – my ‘small frame’ makes me disproportionate because I have big boobs
guest
@lilmysslaura@xanga - umm yeah, that’s not right.
you are most likely in high school still because if you are 5’2″, your healthy weight can be anything from 100 – 130. your BMI chart claims sounds like something for a teenager. BMI charts are different when you have boobs and childbearing hips.
guest
While your opinion is important, the opinion that matters most is that of your doctor. If he tells you that you are healthy at 125lbs, then you can be happy at that weight. As for knowing what weight you should be at, I don’t know how to answer that. That said, if you’re exercising for at least 30 mins a day 5 or 6 times a week and eating a fairly balanced diet, then you probably don’t have too much to worry about.
guest
I think you should go on how you feel. What do you feel best at energy wise? If you feel sluggish and get easily out of breath, you might need to lose some weight. But if you have energy and feel good, you are fine. If you are still worried about it, perhaps you should see a dietician.
guest
@aj_1013@xanga - i only said i was in high school did you not read it or did you skip some parts. -_-;
guest
I’m the same, 5 feet and a very small frame. Even my internal organs are smaller, I had a radiologist tell me. Any extra weight sticks out, and shows. Everyone is different and hold weight differently.
guest
I have a very similar problem; technically, I’m underweight, but my body is flabby and and fat-looking. I get told a lot that I’m way too skinny, but I disagree. I want to lose weight and make my body look better. I know what you’re going through. It may not be right, but I wouldn’t try and follow a BMI chart; my philosophy is go with a weight that you’re comfortable with, even if it’s a pound or two over or underweight. I’m sure you’ll get to a weight that you’re happy with, just keep at it.
guest
I’m not fat, I am also not thin. I like that inbetween.
At least, to people I don’t look my actual weight. hahah.
guest
I think you should not concentrate on the weight.
Totally understand that mostly girls wanna be as light as they can be. But it doesn’t matter at all.
The main thing is your body should be firm. And make sure your body fat is not too much above average.
guest
Not what I really expected.
Weight really depends on the person to decide whether they’re healthy or not. Not some chart.
guest
The BMI chart isn’t something you should look at. Why should there even be a chart to tell you what you should weigh at your certain height?

I’m 5’1″ and 103lbs. However, every time I gain a couple of pounds, I look like I’ve put on 10lbs [due to the small frame and probably lack of muscle, too]! It’s very annoying….

@lilmysslaura@xanga - you said
“your overweight your suppose to be
109-120.
something like that i remember.because i am 5’2 so right
now im underweight because im 105.but i have alot of fat in me but then
yeah lool i dont know.i just know your suppose to be 109 and 120. i
think or was it 115. i forgot.but yeahs. hope you find out soon.(:”
and i said you are not right with that because you are most likely talking about the BMI of a high schooler, which you never mentioned in your post. you’re saying the original poster is overweight when she is not. the BMI of an adult woman is different from a teenage girl in high school, so i am just setting it straight.
i can read, dear. you seem to be the one giving out false info
guest
We’re about the same height. IMO – 125 looks a bit pudgy.
It sucks because 5 pounds at this height looks like 15-20 would on a taller person.

i know what your saying. my friend has a super
NATURALLY
skinny frame and when she went on birth control she gained 10 lbs and she looked pregnant. the weight just didnt fit her tiny frame
guest
i’m barely 5’3 and i weigh about 100 lbs. which is only slightly underweight according to BMI’s. but i know what you mean, if i lose 5 lbs, i look unhealthy skinny, and if i gain 5 lbs, i look like i have some chub.(just because of my frame) when it comes to being a petite female, a couple pounds really alters how you look and feel. but just find a weight that you feel healthy and comcortable at.
guest
I’m 5’3 and 92 pounds. Everyone always says that I’m really small and petite, but to me I feel huge.
guest
I have the same problem; I am also 5’2. When I was 125 pounds, I felt huge because ever pound shows. Now I’m gaining weight back and even though it’s only a couple pounds, it’s very noticeable.
